I got this pad as an upgrade from a Thermarest self inflating trail pad to take with me to Isle Royale. Some of the tent sites were pretty rocky, and I only bothered to get the sharp rocks out from under the tent, leaving the more rounded ones. I did not feel them at all through the pad, simultaneously having some of the best nights of sleep I have had in the backcountry, despite being a side-sleeper.What was really impressive was that this pad took up the same, or less space than the thermarest, and I didn't have to fight it to get it nice and small in my pack. I usually kept my pad in the main compartment for this reason, but now I can easily fold this pad up and lay it in the back of my sleeping bag compartment, letting me arrange the weight better. The thermal quality of the pad I can't quite comment on, since I have yet to use it in a frigid night, but the nights I slept on it were comfortable. It is still impressive considering how little filling it has.The pump integrated into the pad is brilliant, and while it does take work to inflate (I average about 100 pumps for the long-wide) you don't have to wait for the pad to loft like I used to, or blow into the pad to make it remotely comfortable. Once you backfill it when you are done pumping, you can't really feel the pump while laying on it.Unfortunately, there is no long version, just the long wide. This means you have to do more pumps, and you lose some space in the tent, but at the same time, you have more real estate to move around through the night, and more finely adjust the firmness of the pad. (As an aside, I fit pretty well on the pad with just a little extra if I lay straight, and I am 6 foot 4 inches.)In short, this pad is very lofty, so you won't feel rough ground, easy to fold up and store, and well suited to taller side-sleepers. The pad is self-reliant in terms of pumping it up, and is very comfortable for the backcountry for its weight. As long as you take care of it, it is a very nice pad that I would recommend investing in.

We used to use an air mattress and felt very cold even in summer. So I decided to get insulated sleeping pads instead.Synmat 7 is comfortable, Light weight, compact, and insulates very well. Night time low drops to 34F on our recent camping trip and we didn't felt any cold from under. After trying 4 different sleeping pads, this is the one both me and my 10 yr old like best, I ended up getting Synmat 7 medium wide for both of us even though it's the most expensive ones we tried. We tried a total of 4.1. klymit insulated V: the V shape was super uncomfortable. We dislike this one the most.2. Therm-a-rest BaseCamp: too thin. I am slim (96 lbs). I tried it on carpet, and I felt the floor.3.REI camp Bed 2.5: enough cushion and great insulation. But somehow it felt "flat" and not breathable. Somehow Synmat's vertical air columns feel much more comfortable. Because it is self-inflating, pack size is more than twice of synmat. My only complain on synmat 7: it is noisy. I am sensitive to noise. One night my son toss and turn many times and the noise woke me up.update on 6/25/2017It was used only for 3 camping trips last year. Then on our first trip this year, one of them had a leak. When I work up in the morning, half the air was gone. Luckily it was purchased from REI and still within one year return time frame, so I was able to get a full refund.I am going to buy another one because it is the most comfortable I tried. My suggestion is buy it from REI and not from Amazon so you can have one year return window

Just returned from a 3 week camping trip using this every night. I bought the long wide version for car camping as I wanted more room to spread out on but the regular medium version is the standard Thermarest size. It was really comfortable to sleep on.We had 2 mats in our tent: this Exped and an Alpkit self inflating foam mat. When crawling around the tent, or when leaning on the Exped, you touch the floor as there isn't enough pressure there to stop this. Obviously when you spread out this doesn't happen: it's just a product of all air mats. The Thermarest type mats don't suffer from this. The Exped was also noisier than a self inflating mat when moving around, but nothing to put you off buying. The mat stayed really firm for every night used except one anomaly. One night I woke up half way through and the mat was about half deflated. I only noticed this as I sat up and felt the floor underneath me. I was fine whilst laying down. We were camping in hot, humid conditions which cooled during the night so input it down to changing air pressure or air cooling. I've had this occasionally before with air mats over the years.Am I happy with my purchase? Yes. My partner now wants one so my other self inflating mat has been binned and another Exped will be bought. This range of mats come with 5 year guarantees and are a thicker construction to their UL range. I wouldn't really want to carry this range of Synmats in a pack for days or weeks but for car, canoe, overnighter or even at home, they are good.

We purchased this 7M Synmat for my sons as they are light sleepers. Last night was its first outdoor use and my son slept the entire night! The temp was a beautiful 45 degrees and my cold blooded child had his sleeping bag open because the insulating fibres in this mat kept the ground chill from affecting him.I have the Exped Downmat 9LW for myself and cannot say enough at how much that mat has increased my love of camping. (Scout and Cub Scout Leader - I camp a lot). I was surprised that although this mat is the medium size, it is only an inch shorter than my big mat, 1/10 of an inch thinner, and only 3 inches narrower. The mat packs small (think a large Nalgene bottle) and is light. If you want something light that packs small with a comfortable sleep even on your side in cold weather the Synmat is awesome. If you want a warm sleep with roomy comfort, the Downmat is amazing. No other mat comes close to Exped mats and I have tried them all.

I spent hours researching sleeping pads trying to find one that balanced size and weight with comfort and warmth, ultimately I landed on this one and am extremely happy with it overall. Like others, I've found using an external pump (like their Schnozzel Pumpbag) to get the mattress mostly inflated then fine tuned with the integrated hand pump makes the process go quicker, but certainly not required. I purchased the Long Wide, it fits me perfectly lengthwise (I'm 6'1) and is a great width (it doesn't feel like I'll fall off when I roll over). I've had nights as cold as 27 degrees (F) and it's delivered on its warmth rating, it also has a supportive, yet soft feel which has made for many great night sleeps after long days out in the wild. There are options that pack smaller and lighter that might be better suited for backpacking, but for my use on long distance river trips and overlanding in my old truck, this sleeping pad is perfection.

I use to be able sleep on just about anything for a sleeping pad, but not that I'm in my 60's finding a comfortable air mattress is not easy. I used this for a week long backpacking trip in the Winds. It takes a while to pump up with the built in pump but it works well. It also usually took a couple of tries before I could get it to fit back into its stuff sack. However, it is the most comfortable air mattress I've slept on to date, even more comfortable than my big thick Thermarest deluxe camp that I (use to) use for car camping. It is also very warm. We woke one morning to 15°F, expecting lows of no more than 30°F, and I was very comfortable. It didn't suck the heat out of me like that one and only time when I slept on an uninsulated air mattress.

This is a fantastic item. Much more comfortable nights sleep now I'm using this and not a usual style self inflating mat. This synmat has helped me feel warmer too, which is great! I've even been able to open my sleeping bag up like a quilt and not feel cold due to the extra insulation from below. The mat packs quite neat, no bigger than my old old Vango self inflating mat packed and it wasn't even full length. The inflation takes a couple minutes. Only have the plug by the hand prints open and make sure you have your hands on the right position as guided on the mat or you'll take even longer.Deflating the mat is very quick, just pull both plugs and out all the air gushes.I will never have a different style mat again.Thumbs up exped!

Recently bought a couple of Exped inflatable pillows for our campervan, which we've been extremely pleased with, so went looking to see if they also made an Exped air mattress. Arrived very promptly - delighted with it. Packs small into a robust stuff sac. Easy to inflate using hand pressure, without having to blow into it. Deflates very quickly and completely via separate valve. Flock outer, so not too slippery or sweaty. Quite narrow (which we needed, given where it was to fit) but check dimensions before purchase in case you'd prefer the wider, slightly longer, one. The narrow is fine for an 11 stone adult.

It's not self inflating but has it's own hand pump and gives you any kind of firmest you would desire! At 77.5" L x 26" W x 2.8" tall and an R-Value of 4.9, your nights sleep should be just right. That of course depending on the rest of your gear and the weather of course.A good bivy bag over your sleeping bag helps keep cold and frost out. This pad deflates as fast as you pumped it up and rolls up to 6"round x 11" long. It's a 4 season pad so use accordingly,it might be a little too heavy for a minimalist on a warm spring/summer hike.

This item has met and surpassed my expectations. I wanted something that's relatively light weight, comfortable and not to expensive. This has met all of my needs. Like a lot of the other commentators have mentioned this feels like you're sleeping on real bed. While on a camping trip I forgot that I was on a camping trip because the mattress was so comfortable. I love it and would recommend it to others. Only con I can think of is that it's a bit difficult to deflate and stuff back into it's stuff sack.

I've had it two years and love it. I use it to camp out of my kayak. It's compact, easy to inflate, and very comfortable. Not sure how it compares for weight, so not sure if it's a good choice for backpackers, but it's an excellent choice when space and comfort are the criteria. Also seems durable, I use it a lot and it's held up well. One note on durability: I store it laid out flat, not rolled up so the folds don't continually stress the material.

13.7.2018

I found the built in pump quite annoying, it does not have a one way valve so you have to keep opening and closing the pump inlet while your pumping it. Only takes around a minute to inflate though so not too bad. Kept me warn at just above freezing and was fairly comfortable on soft ground. I found it more comfortable after letting some air out. I've heard of noisy airbeds but found this to be quiet.

I am fat; 5'9" and 255 pounds. I have never been able to sleep comfortably in a tent because of I always bottom out on the sleeping pad and feel the Earth on my hip and shoulder. I pumped this up, following instructions. I got on it and didn't feel the Earth at all! On my back or on my side, this pad held me off the Earth. I am using it in my AMOK D3.0 hammock. I would recommend and buy again.

Packs small and easy to inflate. Waiting for camping season to start, still snow on the ground here. Have slept on it a few times and it is comfortable and quiet. Bought it to motorcycle camp and like that it packs small. I will be using a different storage bag, as the provided bag is a little small after the pad has been set up and deflated.

This is the 3rd Exped pad I've ordered and used for my backpacking trips. It is a comfortable pad with almost 3 inches of height, easy to inflate, deflate and pack up. I've had and used my original pad for 2 years now without a problem. I take good care of it by unpacking it after each trip and hanging it up until my next adventure.
