This review will compare the Eagle Creek (EC) 30” Expanse Wheeled Duffel with a 2012 High Sierra (HS) 30” Wheeled Duffel Bag ($74.36). The Eagle Creek product was purchased recently from Amazon and has not been on a trip yet.Pros- Shipment from Amazon was prompt. The suitcase was in its own box, and then the suitcase box was in a larger Amazon shipping box. I had ordered two items and the smaller item was free floating in the huge Amazon box. Because the Eagle Creek box was inside another box, it didn’t have any shipping damage. Although, I imagine a couple trees contributed their life to the additional cardboard.- Eagle Creek had the suitcase for the same cost as the lowest priced Amazon color.Shipping was free from both. I went with Amazon due to ease of returning something.- It is NOT a drop bottom model. I like that it opens on the top, and everything is accessible through the top. When in a cramped room or hostel, it is nice not having to flip the thing open like a book.- When full, the EC suitcase will stand on the wheeled end. It has a hard bottom and stiff end with wheels. The wheeled end does not hinge and has a grab bar that extends out as far as the wheels.- The EC fabric is multilayered with a little padding on the inside. Hopefully it will be more puncture resistant.- There is a side handle, whereas the HS model has looped straps on both sides like a traditional gym bag. They both have a handle on the opposite end from the wheels. Carrying the HS by the straps has the grab point about 21” off the pavement, and the EC side handle about 20”. So, I believe the EC will be marginally easier for a short person to carry the suitcase up steps.- There is an end handle –opposite the wheeled end. The EC handle is slightly closer to the extending pull bar. This seems to give the suitcase a better balance than the HS model when using that handle to pick it up.- The wheels seem to be set deeper in the suitcase than the HS model. I hope they don’t fail after being drug around on the cobblestones of Europe.- The EC extendable handle is about 14.5” while the HS is about 11”. The finish is nice and the action smooth. Both latch and unlatch about equally.Cons- The suitcase was produced in Viet Nam. I try to purchase American-made products.- Because the wheeled-end does not hinge with the suitcase bottom, the suitcase takes up a lot more storage room. The ends on my old HS suitcase folded in, and the entire suitcase took up about 3” of vertical shelf space.- There are no exterior pockets. It would be nice to have a small pocket near the handle to stuff a candy bar or boarding pass. A larger separate compartment for muddy sandals would also be nice.- The HS molded plastic bottom measures 30.75”, while the EC measures 28.75”. The EC model measures about 29” if you include the wheels. Both the EC and current HS model are rated at about 6100 cu in, although the old HS model seems larger. Note: see pictures for size comparison.- The rear of the HS has two parallel skid strips for sliding the suitcase up/down steps. The EC model has two small bumpers mounted near the handle end. The rest of the bottom is unprotected from steps and escalators. I fear the bumpers will catch on things.- Because the wheels are set deeper in the body of the suitcase, they take up more interior space.- The MSRP is $199. That seems a little steep for the somewhat mediocre feel.- There are two compression straps which seem like they will catch on baggage handling equipment. The buckle seemed to get in the way as I opened and closed the suitcase a couple times. I’ll probably just cut these off.SummaryBest - decent materials, good finish, stands uprightWorst – doesn’t fold flat for storage

I bought this duffle as I really like Eagle Creek products. They have stood up to rigorous adventure for many years without complaint and this bag follows suit. I needed a smaller bag to travel to Holland and Africa. After many thousands of miles, upon return home, the bag is unscathed and looks like it has only traveled from my closet. A feature that I like, that maybe some don't, is that there are no separate compartments - it is one large open space, which to me, allows for more available packing space. I often use large ziplock bags to secure and identify certain items so that they are readily visible and accessible. This method works well for me and the bag served it's intended purpose. With 30 liters of storage, I had ample space without fear of checking in overweight.

I have been buying Eagle Creek gear for many years. It is always a great design and well made. This Wheeled Duffel is just the right size for a checked bag on a airline. It is a little smaller that the current airline size limits which I like. It lacks any little zippered compartments but the packing cubes I also bought are even better.

Very roomie, but not so big that it ends up being overweight. Note that this only has two wheels and not the rolling 4-wheels. That's fine- just know what to expect. Also there are no extra pockets to slide small things in, but if you use packing cubes this really isn't an issue. Great bag.

Taking it for its first trip tomorrow! Easy to pack, love that it stands up on end (so many rolling duffels fall over). Nice size. Will update my review if needed after my adventure!

Great bag. Forces me to pack lighter than usual. It is smaller than I'm used to so I need to bring a second bag at times. Well made though and can't beat the warranty.
