135mm f/2L is incredibly sharp even wide open. The images come out very rich in colour and contrasty. Even L zooms have hard time matching the results, but some come very close. The lens is quite small compared to 70-200mm f/2.8, and is painted in black. Therefore it doesn't grab as much attention, and can be used in the darker settings. A closer minimal focus distance of just 0.9m is another advantage for portrait photography. Finally the lens can blur the background very easily wide open, and creates creamy 'bokeh'. These properties make 135mm f/2L perfect for most planned portrait shoots, and some journalism and sports applications.Unfortunately, finding a good copy can take some time. They seem to have inferior build quality when compared to the white ones. They are more likely develop focusing problems, centering issues, etc. They don't take rougher handling too well. Servicing can be expensive; Canon doesn't provide a great value fixed-cost service for this lens. It is best to buy new or still in warranty if in any doubt. If there is anything wrong with a copy of the lens, it will be clearly outperformed by 70-200mm f/4L USM at the same apertures. Finally, the lack of versatility and higher cost of ownership are the greates downsides of 135mm. There is no IS to rely on when the lights get dim. Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 has nearly as good IQ, a perfect focal range and adds the IS, particularly the mkII version. On the other hand bargain lenses like 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm f/1.8 also have very good IQ, but come at a fraction of the cost.135mm is a great portrait lens, but I have to recommend 70-200mm for general purpose insteadRead full review...

This is probably the sharpest Canon prime lens that I've ever own when shooting wide open. We are often conscious about the image quality when shooting wide-open. However, for this you can rest assure when shooting wide-open because it will be sharper than you could imagine. There are not much that I would dislike about this lens. Probably the filter size. Because several of my lenses are 77mm but this one is an odd ball of 72mm. There is also some CA when shooting wide open but I think I can live with that. This lens is perfect for portrait work (half body) or candid shots. I use them on my 5Dm2 and it was phenomenal. I think it is worth every penny. Buy it and you will not regret it.

i bought this as a walkabout lens because of its size and low light capabilities. in using it i discovered that all the reviews i had researched were spot on. Useful on both full frame (1Ds mkiii) and crop ( 7D) this lens is super sharp , has brilliant colour rendition and great as an unobtrusive portrait lens, these together with the build quality make this one of the best value canon lens there is and well worth a look from those who have not considered an L series before.

Bought this lens primarily for wedding photography as it's less intimidating than the white lenses. I've been using it for some street photography and it hasn't been off my camera for the last month, I love it! The bokeh it produces is dreamy and it becomes really sharp from F2.8 and is totally acceptable wide open. The colours are vivid and contrasty and this piece of glass lives up to all its hype. Just but one, you won't look back.

As long as you can use a 135mm prime lens, as long as you can afford to buy it, as long as you don't need image stabilisation? then this lens is capable of taking the best images you'll ever see. There, that's it, the whole review. The clue is... best images you'll ever seeEnjoy!

Fantastic on a full frame body for portraits or for more candid portraits on a cropped sensor. Indoor sports is where this glass excels. Also I've heard of people using it for concert and show photography as the wide aperture is second to none at this focal length.
