I had previously ordered a Sigma 86 mm UV filter for my Zeiss Otus lens but the metal rim was thicker than usual and it prevented the lens hood from fitting over it. Although it cost much more, the Zeiss filter not only fits perfectly but you can tell from the ease with which it screws on that the metal and threading are top quality.Mostly, people want a UV filter simply to protect the front element of their lens, and I have heard it said that blocking the ultraviolet light from the sensor in a digital camera serves no purpose, but I'm convinced that it does. After working with ultraviolet light I have concluded that sensors are not only sensitive to UV but the colours in the Bayer mask can actually fluoresce.I have a powerful UV torch and I tested all the UV filters I have. This torch emits light below 400 nm (which is the upper limit of ultraviolet light) and, if shone on regular white paper, the paper fluoresces very strongly due to artificial whiteners. I therefore interposed each filter in turn and found that the Sigma UV filter did not obstruct the UV in the least, the Hoya ones reduced it to over a half but the Zeiss filters (I now have two) completely blocked all trace of UV. The transmission curve from Zeiss shows that full transmission starts at 400 nm and below that there is almost none.If you are going to place a piece of plane glass in front of your lens it must be as optically perfect as possible. Not only that, but it must not be the cause of reflections back and forth between it and the front element. Zeiss T* multicoating is unsurpassed in its efficiency and, when applied to many surfaces within a lens, can seriously increase light transmission. My Zeiss Hasselblad lenses transmitted twice as much light as their aperture would indicate (when using a hand-held meter). Wedding and portrait photographers knew this and simply exposed at one stop slower. This difference was due to the T* coating.Yes, it's more expensive than others but it performs much better. Would you compromise the performance of your expensive optics by placing a piece of inferior glass in front of it?

When you buy an expensive lens you want to protect it and at the same time you don't want to affect the view/image seen through the lens. This zeiss uv filter proves that fine quality glass is worth the money! You should definitely stay away from those poor quality filters!!!

The UV is T* coated -same coating as the lens. This has made all the difference.
