These Chinese made Walimex filters seem well enough made - they're certainly being sold at a budget price, and for the money they're good value. The slim frame is good if the filter will be fitted on an ultra wide angle lens as it reduces the risk of vignetting. They're multi-coated too, which will reduce flare but the quality and depth of the multi coating cannot be compared to that of more expensive offerings. You get what you pay for after all. In testing I found them to be absolutely fine on a DSLR with a mid price zoom. They make no visual difference to the images, but they do provide valuable lens protection.UV, or ultra-violet light is above the visible spectrum for humans, but the silver based emulsion on the black and white film that used to be used in cameras was particularly susceptible to it. Thus, the UV filter became widely used. Since that time, UV filters have remained popular even though it's arguable that there's no need for them now with modern digital cameras. For one thing the sensors incorporate UV protection anyway, for another the multi-coating on a decent lens is UV absorbent, and lastly your white balance system will adjust colour temperature. It's a topic of debate on the photography forums, and most people I've encountered use them purely for protective purposes. It's worth mentioning though that I have seen it suggested there's some evidence that for certain lenses a UV filter can reduce the purple fringing caused by longitudinal chromatic aberration. The purple fringing of longitudinal chromatic aberration only occurs in particular circumstances and is not to be confused with the much more common coloured fringing caused by lateral chromatic aberration (most noticeable in the corners of the frame).I personally believe in keeping my precious lenses protected against accidental damage to the front element but there is an occasional negative side to that. Flare and ghosting can be increased and is most noticeable when you have bright highlights against a darker background, like a sunset, or street lights at night. What happens is that light bounces off the mirror-like surface of the sensor, and back again off the rear of the filter. So in that situation it might be better to remove your filter. So, overall I don't personally believe a UV filter is necessary unless you still shoot on film. But a protective front filter IS a good idea. I would not want to chip the front element of my Pentax FA77mm Limited for instance, and cost myself eight hundred quid. Up until now I've used Marumi DHG Super Lens Protect filters which are made in Japan, clear, and work very well. This Walimex filter is an acceptable alternative and I'd be happy using it on my cheaper zoom lenses. For my expensive primes I think I'll stick to the Marumi's. And for creative filters it has to be Lee every time.

The build quality of this filter is good. It fits my lenses well and is secure. The quality of the glass is good enough to not distort images at all.As a protector for my lenses it does a good job, it doesn't distort images and there was no vignetting that I could see, albeit I was only using it on lenses of 50mm and up.The filter comes with its own plastic case which does a good job of protecting it while it’s not on the camera.I've included 2 sets of images taken with the filter off (1st image) and with the filter on (2nd image). As you can see form both there is almost no difference between the 2. Perhaps with the image of the tree against the sky there is ever so slightly darker greens on the shadows of the leaves, but nothing you would notice without close inspection.Note - All images taken with a Canon 7D with Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM1st set of images (rhino and pond) were taken at 200mm with f/5.6, 1/800 sec exposure and ISO 2002nd set of images (tree and sky) were taken at 70mm with f/5.6, 1/800 sec exposure and ISO 125For the price I think you can take this as a well-built lens protector that will make little difference to the quality of your shots.

Once you have made your investment into a lens for your camera, you want to make sure you look after it and a UV filter permanently fixed to the front is a good first step. Not only does it help to prevent blue haze in pictures, the filter will also ensure that the front of the lens is protected from dirt and, more importantly, scratches. I have never scratched a camera lens but I have had to change a filter once or twice due to damage – which is a much less expensive process than buying a replacement lens. Combine with a polarising filter and you should see a real difference with your shots. The filter is perfectly adequate and comparable to more expensive options on the market. It is housed in a plastic case and arrives boxed but doesn’t come with any paperwork but, in my experience, this is a filter that will live permanently on your lens, so unobtrusive that you will forget it is there, so you can really dispose of the case.

This is a great little UV filter for your DSLR camera. It will block out a lot of the UV rays that would normally result in a too brighter image. Some camera's do have this built in as a feature so your mileage may vary with those but on a camera without this then this filter is a wonder. As you can see in the customer images it makes quite a difference, giving you more contrast, truer colours and less glare. It is easy to fit and thanks to the outer thread it can have further filters added on to it. If nothing else it will protect your expensive camera lens from scratches and dirt while not affecting your photos! I would recommend getting one of these and permanently fitting them to all of your lens for protection at the very least! The build quality appears excellent with a beautifully clear filter, plus it's very thin and light.Tested on a Canon 700D.

Seems fine. Could even be five starts .. or three. I was given this for free when I bought an relatively expensive lens. I tend to scratch filters so don't want to spend a fortune on something that's ultimately disposable, but then it seems daft to put a cheap filter on an expensive lens if it will compromise image quality. Another reviewer complained of poor optical performance. I'm not sure what they are referring to as there are a number of things that could mean. The filter I have seems free of optical distortion as you'd expect. What probably is an issue is the quality of the multi-coating, which would only become apparent in harsh lighting conditions: shooting direct into the sun,or where strong light is striking the lens from the side. We shall see ...

When buying a new camera or lens it's normally a priority for me to fit a UV or skylight filter as they are sometimes known. Having recently purchased a new lens for my Canon dslr I jumped at the chance of reviewing this 58mm dia filter from Walimex.I keep a filter permanently fitted to cut through atmospheric haze and also to provided protection to the optics it covers. Both viewing the filter on its own and via the camera viewfinder I could find no hint of optical distortion or colouring and this was borne out on several test photographs. This filter is excellent value for money and worth the price alone for its role as a lens protector.Well recommended.

I have always used a uv filter simply to protect expensive lens, so as such it is an essential part of my camera kit. I found this one to be ideal for my needs. At first it looks flimsy and delicate due to the thin thread..but then filters are meant to be unobtrusive, and once screwed onto the camera lens there is a further external thread to attach further special effects filters, etc.A UV filter is useful for cutting down glare and is therefore good for all types of photography without having any adverse affect on your pictures. This particular one seems of a reasonable quality and strength for a decent price, so no complaints here.Recommended !!

A good and affordable little UV filter that works well and fits securely. There were two issues that I have, the first is that there was a nasty smudge in the centre when I received it. I don't know what caused it, but it took a bit of work to get rid of it, and it was affecting the photos until I managed to get completely rid of it. The second is that the thread is a bit fine, it can take a couple of goes to get it on right and I worry that it might wedge on if I was to put it on without care. Having said this, it was very secure once on properly.Overall I'm happy. This has gone on my kit lens where it is doing an admirable job.

A perfectly acceptable UV filter despite my initial misgivings with the price point. That is to say, because it is cheap it might be 'cheap'. It wasn't and performs just as well as my other lens filters at far higher price points.I have only one lens with a 58mm thread and this filter suits it perfectly.I primarily use UV filters as protection rather than UV filter. For starters UV doesn't affect digital camera sensors the same way it affects film and secondly, I refuse to have my expensive lens glass exposed, even if used indoors on a tripod. This filter suits that purpose.

A perfectly decent multi-coated UV filter. It's slim, it works (protects your lens, increases contrast) at a mid-level price. If you're using a very expensive prime lens, you might want to get the best - I would recommend Hoya 52mm Pro-1 Digital UV Screw in Filter (at about twice the price) but if looking for something good quality but cheap, to protect your lens and throw away when scratched, this is ideal. It's threaded on both sides, so you can stack filters, use a lens hood etc.

This is a slim filter. 58mm fits on my 50mm lensed I've tested it on landscapes with several lighting conditions. I can't really say its especially great as a UV filter- they skies don't look any bluer. But if I wanted this effect I could adjust the image after uploading it to editing software. But the filter is perfect if you want some thing to protect your lens from dust and dirt. At less than ten pounds at the time of review its a good buy to protect expensive lenses

I bought this item to protect the lens on a high quality bird-watching telescope. The impact on image quality is nil and it is a very compact fit which still allows the built-in lens hood on the scope to slide forward. It was a little difficult to get the thread to fit correctly onto the scope which is why I have only given it four stars, but it does fit correctly after using a little patience to engage the threads properly.Overall a bargain and well worth buying.

Walimex is a good alternative brand in the photo world making good quality, middle-level products. This is a slim multicoated filter in a popular 58mm size. The optical flatness seems good and engineering tolerances look acceptable. The filter comes in a rigid plastic box with padding but interstingly, the filter was smeared and needed cleaning before I could even use it!Probably not up to Hoya Pro HMC quality but good enough if you want a simple protect filter.

I'm normally a Tiffen user, as an upgrade from the old Hama filters for SLR - big believer in not putting rubbish in front of the lens as it will affect image quality.Compared to these I like this filter a lot. I keep UV filters on all my lenses as an extra protector - this one is glass, unlike a lot of cheaper filters swimming around that are resin, and god forbid, acetate.I've got the 49mm one which fits OM lenses amongst others.Overall very pleased.

A must have for any SLR camera. I have used more expensive Hoya UV filters in the past and this walimex filter works just as well.It reduces the haze that often impairs shots in sunlight, improving the contrast between the sky and subject or landscape.I put one of these straight on a new lens and leave it on permanently - it offers good protection and I know I can replace it if it gets scratched or damaged, unlike a lens.
