My wife has field tested these Binoculars since we received them yesterday morning. Her opinion is that they are indeed a 5 star pair of optics and she has loved using them!As far as she is concerned she found them heavier than she thought they would be, though they are among the lightest on the market and 2 oz lighter than her old Olympus 8X40's.She found them easy to set up and great for fast focussing as the focus wheel only rotates through three quarters of a turn making it pretty fast, they are comfortable to hold and very well balanced. The 8X magnification is ample enough for general birding and wildlife watching, though if you fancy a little stargazing you had better go for something stronger!one other thing that she noticed was the near focus facility which according to the technical stats is 9.2ft which she has never been able to do with her old bins, this is a very useful thing when you are looking at close distance objects....butterflies for example. The eyepieces are adjustable by turning them up or down to suit your specific eyesight (whether you wear specs or not)The bins also have a tripod adaptor screw point. These binoculars are 100% waterproof and are pretty rugged so should be fine in wet weather and possibly withstand the odd bump or two. They come with a really nice black padded bag and a very smart shoulder/neck strap, a good quality cleaning cloth both front and rear lens caps all four of which can be fixed to the bins or straps which should make them difficult to lose. And I almost forgot that they have a limited lifetime Warranty too!All in all my wife thought these binoculars were pretty damned good and possibly just worth the money!EDIT 21/11/2014After a holiday in Fuerteventura,we noticed that the optics had a halo around the outside of the image which no amount of cleaning could disperse, this always looked pretty bad particularly in bright sunshine, we tried shading the bins and that didn't work either.Eventually after putting up with this issue for a fair while, I found the contact details for the UK branch of Vanguard and via e mail chatted with a young man called Kris in their Customer Services Department. He was most helpful and agreed that if I returned the defective bins (which I did) he would replace them with new ones. The new bins arrived this morning and are perfect!I am a retired Manager of a Tourist Information Centre and I recognise outstanding customer service when I receive it, and am always happy to applaud such terrific service!Take a bow Kris for your excellent service, and thank you!

I have recently purchased a set of Vangaurd Spirit ED 10x42 Binoculars to replace my old set which I have had for many years and were not great quality but did not cost that much. I had purchased a set of Nikon Binoculars from Argos ( £99.00) and was very disapointed with them. I took them back to Argos and got a full refund with no problems. This made me think that I needed to pay more for a quality set and as I will probably have them for the rest of my life I decieded that I would do my deep research project and see what was available in the marketplace. So on to Google to do the research and see what was available.Found a very interesting website called Best Binoculars and Binoculars Reviewwebsite and they provide a very comprehensive review of all that is available and with quailty reviews of what is out there and believe me there is a lot and very difficult to make a choice. However I was drawn to the review on the website that the Vanguard Spirit ED 10x42 were the set that I should purchase. Recommended best buy for 2011. So sent away for them throught Amazon and alougth thy were out of stock I decieded to wait for them. A week later they arrived and WoW what a fantastic piece of engineering. Very high quality, easy to use and comes with flip down cups to protect the Hight Quality Optics. A Quality case and strap is included and they dont weigh much like some of the others available. So what is the quality like, Well I have to say that I was more than impressed with the quality of the optics. Looking through the lenses was like 3D and 10 Times better than the Nikon ones that I had tried. So much detail was available and I was taken aback with the overall quality and detail. In essesence I was very pleased with them and would highly recomend these to anyone who is thinking of buying new or replacing an old set that they have been using for years like I had been doing.Amazon was the cheapest place to buy them and also Vanguard were offering a £40.00 cashback after purching by sending the voucher that is available on their website. So A quailty set of Optics at £234.23 on Amazon and got a cheque for £40.00 back from Vanguard was simply the best buy that I have had for many years.

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A GOOD SET OF BINOCULARS FOR A WHILE NOW AND HAVING TRIED MY FRIENDS CANON 10X30IS ONES I THOUGHT I HAD MADE MY SELECTION, MY MAIN USE IS HUNTING, / WILDLIFE OBSERVATION, AND GENERAL HOLIDAY USE, SO A LIGHT WEIGHT COMPACT SET WAS WHERE I WAS SETTING MY SELECTION, I WAS TAKEN BY THE IMAGE STABILISING FACILITY OF THE CANONS, AND THE VERY GOOD OPTICAL PICTURE THEY GAVE, BUT IN ALL OTHER RESPECTS THEY LACKED SOME ESSENTIAL FEATURES I WANTED, IE, FULLY WATERPROOF AND FOG PROOF. BECAUSE THE ENGLISH WEATHER CAN BE SO UNPREDICTABLE. IN MANY HOURS OF SEARCHING I KEPT COMING ACROSS THE VANGUARD 1040 ED ONES, MOSTLY AMERICAN REVIEWS, BUT SOME ENGLISH ONES AND I HAVE TO SAY THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED A BAD WORD YET,INDEED ONE BINOCULAR TESTING SITE HAS AWARDED THEM BEST VALUE BINOCULARS OF 2011, OUTSTRIPPING MANY MODELS THAT ARE THREE AND FOUR TIMES THEIR PRICE IN SEVERAL IMPORTANT FIELDS, I HAVE TO SAY A LITTLE ON THE AMAZON SITE, AS WELL,AND MY EXPERIENCE WHEN BUYING THESE.I NORMALLY TRY TO BUY ITEMS THAT ARE SOLD BY AMAZON OR BACKED MY THEM, THESE WHERE SOLD BY THEM. AND I NORMALLY GO FOR THE FREE SUPER SAVER DELIVERY OPTION AS I FIND ITEMS TURN UP QUICKLY BY THAT METHOD, AND ITS FREE. HOWEVER WITH THE BINOS COSTING £266-ODD I DINT WANT TO RISK IT AS NEAR AS IT IS TO CHRISTMAS SO I PAID FOR THE NEXT DAY BEFORE 1PM OPTION, WHICH COST NEARLY NINE POUNDS.ALL I CAN SAY IS, WOW. WITHIN AN HOUR I HAD AN EMAIL TELLING ME THEY HAD BEEN DISPATCHED, AND THEY HAD A TRACKING NUMBER FROM CITY LINK. THEY ARRIVED AT 8.30 NEXT MORNING. BRILLIANT SERVICE!GOING BACK TO THE VANGUARDS, THE IMAGE IS PHENOMENALLY CLEAR AND SEEMS ALMOST 3D CERTAINLY HD, CHECK OUT THE REVIEWS FOR YOURSELF BEFORE PAYING OUT ON A SET PLEASE DO, YOU COULD END UP LIKE ME SAVING SOME MONEY AND GETTING A BETTER SPECT MODEL INTO THE BARGAIN, OH AND BY THE WAY THEY HAVE A 30 YEAR OR LIFETIME WARRANTY TO THE ORIGINAL BUYER,I WONT ADD ANY MORE ON THE OPINION OF THEM FOR FEAR OF LOOKING LIKE I AM COPYING WHAT I HAVE READ ABOUT THEM, READ THEM FOR YOURSELVES,TOP BUY!!!!!

These binoculars are undoubtedly compact if compared with 8 x 32 designs from other manufacturers. They balanced well in my hands and felt solid and confident. The hinge of the binoculars was smooth and easy to adjust to the width of my eyes; not all binoculars are. Some have criticised the focusing wheel as aggressive; focusing from the closest range to infinity within three quarters of a turn, but I found the focusing wheel smooth, responsive and precise. So far no complaints. Under normal conditions the image is pleasingly sharp and bright, even after sunset in low light. However - and this will all depend on the use that you have in mind - I did experience a minor optical flaw.In certain conditions involving very high contrast objects, e.g, brightly lit grass against very dark trees, I experienced flare reflections which I found irritating. For general purpose use this wouldn't be noticed much, however I purchased these binoculars to use at work where these high contrast polarities are common. This was enough to make it a deal breaker and so I opted instead for the Hawke Endurance ED 8 x 32 binoculars, which I found slightly sharper. Nevertheless, with all optics there is always a trade off, since it has to be said that these Vanguard ED 8 x 36 binoculars are brighter than the Hawke Endurance ED 8 x 32 binoculars; which can be appreciated when comparing them side by side at sunset. The Vanguard comes with a well made carry case and the binocular strap looks very comfortable; better than some binoculars costing more. The rain guard to protect the eye cups is on the stiff side in terms of flex, but put in perspective this is only another minor criticism.Personally I wouldn't pay £173 for them in today's optics market, since I think they are now out-competed by more modern designs. However, if you are able to obtain them for around £100 and want them for general purpose use and don't mind the minor flaw dependant on certain lighting conditions that I have highlighted, then you have got yourself a bargain!

I bought these binoculars through Amazon.co.uk after reading great reviews on Binocular sites about them I was not dissapionted by their performance absolutely crystal clear views, pin sharp focus, vivid colurs really crisp almost 3D like, and SO BRIGHT.. all this with solid build quality. The binoculars are waterproof/fogproof they are phase corrected, have an emerald coating, a V-max silver coating, and an anti reflection coating, the prisms and optics use ED glass for extra low light dispersion.. all the features usually only seen in top class £600-£1000+ binoculars these Vanguard Spirit ED 10x42 binoculars are superb and can compete with Leica, Swarovski,Zeiss for a quarter of their prices. All this for way under £300, You just can't get a better pair of roof prism binoculars at this price well done Binoculars-UK. By the way did I mention how light they are 640g and that they come with a nice bag and excellent neck strap. These really are excellent binoculars with 16mm of eye relief and twist up eye cups all made with quality soft rubber, smooth precise focus and good field of view. In testing these along side my trusty Carl Zeiss 8x30 jenoptems the Vanguards blew them away for clarity, colour, brightness. They even out performed my Swift Audubons ED. 8.5x44..which are great.. I could see no colour fringing or other lens problems you get with all binoculars. To sum up if you want 10x magnification, light weight, top quality, all the coatings and ED glass get on to Amazon or if your near Blackpool go see Richard at Binoculars-UK now for a great deal. I am in no way affiliated or reviewing the above binoculars for any company or website this is my own honest/personal review of the Vanguard Binoculars. UPDATE... I HAVE HAD THESE BINOCULARS NOW FOR FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AND USED ALMOST EVERY DAY AND THEY ARE STILL AS NEW. NO WORN RUBBER EYECUPS OR LENS CAPS. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. THE VANGUARD ENDEAVOUR ED 10x 42 ARE EVEN BETTER BY 20%.

When you open the sturdy box and take the binos out, the first thing that strikes you is the amazing feel of quality. These are an amazing piece of well designed engineering. The feel of the product is just right, well balanced, nice ergonomics to fit the hands and the expandable eyepieces for non-spectacle wearers is just right, a first in binos for me. I used to wear glasses, so I retracted the eyepieces and tried a pair on and I could still use them with specs! That's a first.I tried them put on a handy Police helicopter hovering around the town, very easy to locate the moving chopper and the image was bright and super sharp. It was very easy to track the chopper as it moved, the binos are really easy to use quickly and efficiently.Adding the strap is a fun (not) exercise, so take your time planning it, it needs to go through the lens cap - so I had to do it twice!Cleverly the strap also converts to fix to the carry case instead of the binos, good for carriage. However - a tip for the case designer, a double zip would allow the case to be inserted over the binos whilst still attached to the binos for quick use, the instructions suggest cabling them both up on the same strap - but that wopuld be annoying as the case would just flap around permanently when in use.The website is slow and there are no UK dealers listed, hopefully that will improve in time. The binos are waterproof, excellent if caught in a rainstorm, but they do not float of course!I am not a twitcher, so no idea if they suit 'birders' as they like to be called now, but I have been spying on our local Red Kites - excellent and easy to find and track the birds as they hover above us.I love these binoculars and am very impressed as an example of very fine engineering, highly recommended. Conclusion: Should you buy them? YES.

Having never really bothered writing reviews (to lazy) I was compelled to write one for these binoculars. I spent a long time visiting web sites reading reviews (as I usually do before a considered purchase). Almost all reviews rated these binoculars very highly; I have rarely found reviews from different unconnected sites agreeing on the same product.I have to agree with all the reviews I have read and was not disappointed. You hardly notice you are using the binoculars as the light and image are so perfect. The construction and quality feel is very reassuring. It has a rubber like coating that feels good to hold and 'gives'ever so slightly. The case has a simple but clever design which allows you to have either the binoculars or carry case attached to the well made strap.I work in an office block and use the binoculars to view aircraft on approach to the airport (during lunch) which is approximately 10 miles away. When the weather is good the detail on the aircraft is very clear, the only drawback is viewing through the office windows as this spoils the image slightly. My work colleagues cannot believe how good they are!Overall I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend them to anybody considering a pair of entry to mid price binoculars as these really do preform well above their price point.

I absolutely regret not biting the bullet at an earlier time as these are so easy and accurate to use. I have only used them for three days but what a difference in viewing. They are going to be used in very demanding circumstances so I will update at some point, but already I can see that they are built to withstand the daily handling that outdoor activities demand. My only gripe is the carry case does not have enough thought, ie, no internal small pouch for the cleaning cloth and another zip pulley so it can be closed from both sides thus leaving the straps sticking out at the most central point, but this is superficial and we shall stitch the pocket in ourselves and the zip, if it goes,we will replace with a double pulley version.***UPDATE*** 18 sept 2014These have been used in all weathers, but some label and cover became detached from the item and lost. I contacted the manufacturer direct but was unable to get replacements so contacted amazon and they are sending a new pair. These are fine items but the finishing for this price should really be better. They have otherwise been faultless especially in the Pyrenees in mist and damp weather as the lens always stay perfectly clear, which in turn means you do not spend all your time clearing them to see which in turn can cause scratching on the lens

I have used these binoculars for at least 6 months now (primarily for bird watching) and have so far been very impressed. They have responded well in all weather conditions. They are also quite light weight in comparison to a friends pair of Opticron binoculars that retail at a higher price than these. There is also very little difference between the optics and my friend was surprised when I told him how much I paid for them. At this price point you cannot be disappointed with the performance! The fact that the lens covers stay on the binoculars is also very handy because you cannot lose them. It also means that you can just pop them on and off very easily without having to fumble in pockets. The focus wheel is very easy to use and feels of good quality. The focus adjustment is very fast and precise and might take some getting used to but after a few uses it becomes second nature. The eyecups adjust easily for glasses/non glasses users and still enable a good view. The bag and neck strap that come the binoculars is very high quality as well and is showing no signs of wear after 6 monthsI am very happy with my purchase! The binoculars themselves feel very good in hand with a good shape and with enough weight to not be regarded as a toy. Very high quality finish.

I recently bought through Amazon a pair of Vanguard Spirit 10x42 binoculars to replace a pair I have owned for some year. I thoroughly researched what was available in the market place and would have liked a pair of Swarovski 10x42 but for the use they would get I could not justify the price notwithstanding that they are well worth it. I then came across an excellent site www.bestbinocularsreviews.com which together with other reviews and after much study narrowed my search down to two products both by Vanguard being the Spirit and Endeavor series which for their price came close to the Swarovski specifications.I finally settled on the Spirit purely because I liked the design and discovered that the item available through Amazon for the Endeavour was now being marketed with uprated optics but at a higher price. The Spirit binoculars arrived and I was not disappointed, the optics being so clear with sharp focus and stunning colours. The rapid focus is a delight to use and the neck strap is as comfortable as the bought separately strap on my DSLR. Not only were these binoculars excellent value but I was able to obtain a £40 cash back from the importers Vanguard.

I received these as a present and don't profess to be knowledgeable about binoculars. I own both pocket and regular binoculars but these Vanguard ones are a world apart from what I've used previously. I wanted something significant to use as a test and today visited Cumbria Wildlife Trust's reserve at Foulshaw Moss to view the Ospreys nesting there. The nest is a long way from the nearest viewing point but we were able to observe both the fledglings in the nest and the birds in flight. These binoculars were a joy to use, significantly easier to focus, with much clearer and brighter image. Even to my untrained eye I was impressed on the clarity of the birds'plumage in flight against a bright sky and now realise the chromatic aberration and rather dull images of my previous equipment compared with these new binoculars. I am also impressed with them because the rubberised finish makes them both pleasant and easy to use especially on the eye pieces. The versatile adapable strap with lens caps attached makes losing them impossible. Recommended, especially since price reduced since purchase :-0

These binoculars are beautifully made and look like military grade quality. With the attached lens cap protectors and the durable metal and rubberised finished they won't look too shabby after a few years of use. They come in a hard-wearing black nylon shoulder case which, although not cheap looking, belies the high-end nature of these binoculars. Probably a good thing because you don't want to draw too much attention to valuables.I remember that my father's binoculars used to be treated like a holy relic and, as a small boy, my use of them would have to be carefully monitored. I've got no such worries about these Vanguard binoculars because they are so rugged. As a family with two children aged 10 and 14,it has added a new dimension of enjoyment on walks to be able to observe birds at a distance without disturbing them. I should have bought a pair years ago but the good ones were always expensive. These were a gift from Amazon which I have been allowed to keep. Thank you - very kind.I'm no expert but as an 'ordinary' person I can't see how these binoculars could be better.

I had been looking for a good pair of "all-round" binoculars for nature watching/star-gazing for some time. When I saw the reviews for these on Amazon I also checked out a binocular review website, and they got top marks there too. It was slightly more than I had planned to pay, but I took the plunge and bought them anyway.I am very pleased I did. They are reasonably lightweight, robust, and just small enough to carry round on a hike (any larger and heavier and you might think twice more often than not about taking them). The case and strap is good, but I would expect something decent at this price. Best of all, though, is the image. It allows for plenty of light.I've already tried them in low-light conditions (when you tend to do more nature-watching anyway) and I am very impressed. Given the magnification and the dimensions, I think you would be hard-pushed to find a better image at this price. If you are in the hunt for a pair of decent binoculars for general use, and can stretch your budget this far, you don't need to look anywhere else.

At £186 plus a £40 off voucher from Vanguard this has to be the binocular deal of the decade! These binos are super, clarity is brilliant, crystal clear with great colour rendition. I actually own an old pair of Leica and a new pair of Hawke but these are far better. OK they probably don't quite match top end BIG 3 but for £146 or so what can you expect. Well what you can expect is a compact pair of top quality binos that to 99% of users will not differ one iota from the top 3 - and only the experts (whoever they may be) will notice any difference. I have been a keen birdwatcher for over 40 years and these are the best pair I have ever owned ( I bought my Leicas in my unmarried youth)but today I cannot see any reason other than pure bragging rights to buy any of the big 3 when Vanguard produce these at an effect price of £146!.. You can afford several pairs at different magnifications to meet all needs. Don't hesitate- buy now before the £40 deal disappears!! Even after the £40 discount they are still a top deal!!

Received this morning. Who could resist trying them out instantly? It also seemed a perfect day to test out how weatherproof they are considering that, because it's August and we're in the UK, it is naturally tipping down with rain outside.Minor criticism: didn't find them as lightweight as the box suggests. My first reaction on eagerly lifting them out of the box was 'geez, these are heavy'. They do however look durable enough (although I'm definitely not planning on chucking them to the ground anytime soon to test that theory). If you want high-quality binocs these are for you; the engineering is simply beautiful for the price you pay. Don't go for cheap, it's just not worth it.My mum reckons these are perfect for bird-watching; I on the other hand would love to use them when I go on holiday for taking in the sights up close and really appreciating beautiful views through the sharp, enhanced colour resolution. Very, very pleased with these!
