Ultrasport GPS Bike Computer NavBike 400Training is becoming more high tech and this little computer unit ( reversibly attachable to a cycle handlebars via cable ties) makes integrates GPS and health data recording of cycling performance ( heart rate detection belt available as a separate unit) possible for download and computer analysisOut of the box – a small (2 x 1.5”) stopclock like unit and a detachable USB cable to charge the unit / download data to a computer via a USB port. There is a mini CD disc with software for the computer to process the data and with quick and full product manuals in various languages. There are 2 cable ties to attach the unit to the bicycle handlebarsSet up – attach the unit via the USB link to a computer to charge up the unit – took ca 6hProceed to set up as per the quickstart or full manuals – I found the instructions well confusing and not in a very logical order – basically one need to turn on the GPS and get it to pick up the “home position” – outside – away from any line of sight obstructions to the GPS satellites such as trees. The set up then involves getting into various modes via the 4 buttons on the unit – logically labelled S1 , S5 , S7 and S11 ( Hmm!) and presetting various parameters .This was not very clear from the enclosed instructionsThe unit can also be linked to a heart rate monitor which Ultrasport sell ( not provided with this unit although it was clearly advertised as part of the package - supplied free under the VINE review programme)When the exercise is started the chrono is set going and relates time and GPS signal to location and speed during the activity. Currently working on various test runs to see just how useful the data is.Overall a nice idea , somewhat spoilt by confusing and over complicated instructions. Surprising since it comes from Germany – the translation must have gone via Korean. The mental activity in sorting these alone must burn off more than a few calories – rate the unit initially as 3 stars.NOTE - If I take into account the original Vine offer of inclusion of the Heart monitor strap – which did not materialise – I would knock the rating down to one star

Attempting to get back into cycling, a bike computer was always on the agenda to help me keep track of what I’ve done and how far I’ve been. This Ultrasport GPS bike computer provides GPS tracking as well as including a chest-strap for monitoring my heart rate. It also includes various other functions such as a compass and stopwatch. The GPS aspect is the bit that costs the money here. Overall, it should fit the bill nicely, provided it’s all ergonomic and super-easy to use...But herein lies the problem I have had with this device. It is fiendishly difficult to setup and operate. The instructions are written in such a way as to confound. Not even the buttons are labelled in a user-friendly manner.Getting past the first use section was a proper challenge, so-much-so that I had to re-read the instructions for that section about 10 times, and even then it wasn’t clear in my mind what I was doing. In this day and age, user-friendliness is a top selling point, so I hope Ultrasport are paying attention here and make some improvements. I don’t want to be too harsh on it for it’s instructions, just in case they get improved over time, but I suspect the Plain English Campaign would not be giving them any awards any time soon.I am also slightly frustrated by the fact that I can’t turn it off, it simply stays on permenantly until it runs out of charge. You then need to re-charge it using a USB lead - meaning if you haven’t been out on your bike for ages, you might need to plan ahead and make sure it’s charged up first.I will persist with this device however, as I am determined to get the most out of what I’m sure is a good product that seems decent quality. It’s chief rival is likely to be the Garmin Edge range of bike computers that also feature GPS. They come in a similar range of prices, and I would wager they might be easier to use, given their proven track record in in-car Satellite Navigation systems. If you are able to find a bike shop that features a selection of bike computers for you to try, or know some cycling enthusiasts who are more up on these things, they may provide a better recommendation.

I've had the same experience as other reviewers on this monitor which should hopefully highlight that there are several fundamental flaws to what is actually a well-built unit with real potential.I can only comment on the computer as the heart-rate monitor was not included. Having said that, I've always been a little sceptical about heart-rate monitors, unless you're medically advised to keep your heart-rate under a certain level then surely it has limited use as you know your own body better than anyone else. It becomes something of a distraction. The computer is limited to recording your speed , distance and lap-time which is limiting but functional non-the-less. The display reminds me a little of a 1980's Casio watch,in that it is blocky and retro. Having said that, the display is large enough to be read easily from the saddle.I'm fortunate enough to live and cycle in fairly open terrain and as such haven't experienced any loss of data accuracy due to breaks in GPS because of obstructions. The initial set-up was very fiddly and the instructions seemed translated from another language and didn't really make a whole lot of sense. Through trial and error I did succeed, but you shouldn't need to persevere to set-up what is in essence a pretty simple configuration. There is software (and a USB cable which doubles as a charger) supplied, but again, the unclear instructions frustrate. The software allows you to download and analyse your data is you so wish. Bluetooth connectivity would have possibly made this interface easier, but as this is absent as well as any other mobile/application support it would be wishful thinking.

This mini computer is basically a record of your performance and distance over time. The idea is to combine GPS/Lap information with your heart rate and respiration so that you can measure and improve your performance.Disclaimer: I can only review the computer and GPS bit as the heart rate/respiration monitor wasn't included in the package I received. The computer is a lightweight device which you can attach to your bike. It records lap time and GPS information to build a picture of your journey. it comes with a micro USB cable for charging and data download and a DVD of software for your PC to record and analyse data. The set up is complex and somewhat confusing and the instructions aren't particularly helpful (the button naming convention isn't very helpful at all). The GPS setup and calibration is very weak and requires a very clear outside space with few obstructions, city streets are probably totally out. The overall set up experience was problematic and in the context of the expectations of modern user experience, pretty dreadful. It's fairly complex to use as well and I can't seem to work out how to turn it off.The technical performance seems fine with good data collection and accuracy (away from tall buildings) but the whole experience is deeply unsatisfactory.Note there isn't any bluetooth or mobile/App support for this device.

I'm reviewing this partly on what it is doing but also on what it should be capable of once some issues are fixed.Like other reviewers my review sample didn't include the heart monitor that we believed was going to be included. However I did get a separate one to review so I was hoping the two would work together and that would solve the issue. Unfortunately partly due to poor instructions and partly probably my lack of technical prowess I can't get them to chat. I don't know if they will ever work together but as things stand I can't make it happen. So, poor instructions aside with a bit of persistence you can get it working and it does provide a potential wealth of helpful info for your bike training. The GPS tracks well and the computer software I set up with little issue. First time use was a bit tricky again thanks to the instructions, but once over that hurdle it is perfectly useable. It just isn't as intuitive or useable as one would like.Build is, like the heart monitor, solid and it feels of good quality. I fully expect this would take a few knocks and drops and not be bothered. Obviously I'm not keen to test it!Overall then, if Ultrasport can address the instructions and user friendliness then the rest of the package looks good. At present I can't give it higher than 3 stars whilst it feels restricted.

Although a potentially useful piece of kit, it's somewhat difficult to providea comprehensive view of its performance without the heart monitor whichthe Vine Programme indicated would be included as a part of the package. The unit comes with a USB charger and software to sync itwith your computer to store and evaluate performance data. The cable clips provided to fix the product to the handlebars do not makefor easy attachment and would be a major source of irritation to put on andtake off every time one might need to leave the bike chained up to a lamp post.A quick release mechanism of some kind would be far more useful. As another reviewer has correctly indicated the printed instructions requiremore than a little patience to navigate.I needed help from the cubs, Scattyand Gritz, to get the contraption set up and working properly. Although I cansee how such an artifact might be useful I'm afraid it was a bit too fiddly for me.(The heart monitor might have made it a more interesting prospect however).

This is a useful piece of kit that was fairly simple to use and performed consistently with the information produced by Garmin cycle computer used by another rider. Not too many additional features but a good entry level option.
