What I needed was a good tool to break a bunch of chains down into dozens of little chain bits for a robotics project. After working with one of the cheap $5 big box store tools for about 15 minutes, I realized that there HAD to be something better out there. This was it. Sturdy construction, good leverage, and a push pin that actually stays inline with the chain pin while you're turning the handle. I've lost count of how many links I've separated at this point (I can't WAIT to start reassembling them! *sigh*) and the tool has put up with every second of use. It's probably got nearly a lifetime's worth of "normal" use on it already, and if I do happen to break it or wear it out,I will happily buy another one and carry on. Definitely pleased with the quality!(4/10/2014, edited to add) - I've now used this tool to separate nearly 1000 individual links, which is a lot less fun than it may sound. :) It's starting to exhibit a little bit of wear but is still working very well. For something that was most likely *not* designed with this amount of constant (ab)use in mind, I'd say it's absolutely tough enough to hold up to anything a more normal person could throw at it. I'm hereby awarding this tool an honorary 6th star for thriving in some terrible working conditions.

I have struggled for YEARS popping chain links. I always though I was doing something wrong, watching countless YouTube videos to see what magic others were doing that I seemed to fail at. However, after using this I can safely say all of my old cheap chain breakers were not equipped for the challenge. In that process I discovered that the pin opening on some chain breakers are smaller than others. So if you chain has larger pins that your tool allows, you could be the strongest man alive and still not break the chain cleanly. Using this on a 9-speed chain (KMC brand andShimano CN-HG53) pushed those pins like a warm knife through butter. And with the sliding lever, you can get more than adequate leverage. For my old breakers, I was sometimes able to get them to work by taking a monkey wrench to grip the lever to be able to exert a lot of force. The only thing about this tool that I would improve is how the chain holder piece (that thing on the handle) is attached. While its really awesome that it includes one of these at all, it can fall out pretty easy so be careful not to lose it.

Adjusted the chain on my son's bicycle like its meant to do. Made a potentially tedious job very quick and easy. If you're thinking about adjusting a bicycle chain with a nail and hammer, don't!. Go ahead and get this, it'll save you time, frustration, a busted thumb, and some hurt feelings from the kids. One tool tip I'll give you, don't push the link pin out all the way on the chain. Go slow with the tool when you get to that point and make sure the pin doesn't fall out. If the pin falls out its a booger to get it back in.Another reviewer mentioned the push pin in the tool breaking after three uses. I used this tool to remove and install multiple pins and links (more than 5)the first day I got it and the tool worked flawlessly. For the occasional bicycle repair this tool is perfect and one to definitely keep in the tool box.

I wasn't having luck knocking out chain link pin with a hammer/nailset, so I ordered this tool. From reading online how-to guides, I knew I should carefully center the pin, and not push the pin all the way out of the chain. I wasn't sure how far was far enough, but I went carefully and pulled the chain out for inspection a couple of times. Chains fit firmly in the groove of the tool, takes only slight pressure to keep it there. It wasn't clear which groove to lay the chain into at first, but I tried all the possible grooves, and only one setting fit snugly, so I used that. I've only taken apart one chain with this, but anticipate lots of use since I maintain my family's 6 bikes.

Must have tool for any garage bike mechanic. This tool makes chain breaking easy! Instructions are simple enough, measure out your chain (do it twice before breaking) and insert the necessary link into the one of the two slots on the tool. I prefer the one that is closest to the end of the tool since it's stronger and provides more leverage. Line up the pin with the rivet and start cranking the tool until the rivet pops out. Simple! This tool also has a little storage space for chain pins (not included) and comes with a handy little steel link that temporarily holds the chain together. VERY Handy!I've only used it on one or two chains thus far and it's been solid!

Chain, chain and, yet more chain........that's right, a recumbent, such as my Terra Trike has roughly three times the chain length of a regular bike. This handy tool tames that chain beast very well, as long as you take care of this tool by lubricating it and paying attention as you use it.I've used this tool to break the end lengths of standard chain, and then to assemble the sections into one long chain that I need.And.......I've used this tool to free a binding chain link that prevents smooth functioning.Just don't force it, and don't fall to keep the threads lubricated, and you'll get a great deal of utility in your toolbox.Highly recommended.

Great little chain breaker! Bought it for an on the road kit as I am not really of fan of chain breakers on mulitools. When I need it I prefer it to be a little more specialized to the task. This one makes the cut and is light and small. Broke a few chains so far and old stuff I had laying around just to test it out. Works great. I do baby my stuff a little. The metal doesn't seem as hard as others. But if you pay attention and work incrementally, I think this one is going to last. I did add a dab of loc-tite (blue) to the handle threads because it came apart way too easy. After that, it's perfect. 100% suggest this chain breaker.

Amazing little tool. I used it to remove the pin from a really old chain, and it pushed it right out. I then used it to shorten the new chain. The reviews on the new chain stated the pins were really tight, and some reviewers had broken their chain tools (different models than this one) trying to remove them. It took some elbow grease, but it pushed the pin out without any damage at all. As an experiment, I pushed the pin back in to the links I removed, and it worked perfectly. The chain is solid, and the links move as they should. Highly recommend. It's small and light enough you could carry it while riding.

After reading reviews that said that "compact" chain breakers are notoriously difficult to use, I sought out this one thinking it would avoid that issue. But I realized that it is also a tiny one. Having so little leverage makes it very hard to push out the pin. It so difficult that I get concerned that when the pin moves I'm going to slam my hand and bust a finger nail. Aside from the annoying leverage issue, which can be solved safely by extra effort and focus, it is a great product. I don't think it will ever break and it holds the chain securely and has a logical design. And hey- I broke a chain with it!

WAY better than expected. I thought it was going to be the same quality as one of those piece of crap zinc tools you get at every department store. You know, the ones you turn once and they snap in half. This thing is solid and weighs 3 ounces. Solid quality metal. I even popped the link pin out all the way by accident and it was relatively easy to get back in with this. I didn't have the same problem with the handle some other reviewers have. The handle doesn't screw tight but it's not an issue whatsoever in my opinion. The tool doesn't move around because of it.

I was skeptical about buying this chain tool. There were others on here that were double the price if not more. I recently bought a chain and realized hammering the pins out of a new chain was just not working so I gave in and bought this tool based on the reviews and I have to say I had the pins out in less than a minute! This is great quality and has good weight to it. I just recently started riding and was my first chain that I have replaced and it worked fantastic and didn't cost me a lot to get it. Great tool!

This tool worked great with my new KMC bike chain. Be sure to youtube some videos on how to use it. Also I highly recommend leaving a little bit of the pin in the chain link instead of popping it all the way out. I saw only one video that recommended that tip, and after accidentally popping the pin all the way out, I quickly realized how insanely difficult it was to get the pin started in the chain link again. Took me 20 minutes opposed to 2 minutes on another chain link where I left just a little pin left.

I used this chain breaker to break a new mountain bike chain to the proper length. I've only used it once so far, but it performed well, and looks reasonably sturdy. It's definitely not a high-quality precision tool, but well-made for the hobby cyclist, or a bargain-oriented commuter cyclist such as myself. One thing that's not clearly shown in the photos is how small this thing is. The handle is big enough to give you sufficient grip, but the overall tool really is small enough for an underseat tool kit.

Neat little tool that has some good weight to it. I don’t think I would use it as a hammer as the documentation describes but I guess it is an option. The first one I received from Amazon did not have the tightening bar which was strange because it isn’t removable. Submitted a request online and a replacement was there in two days. I immediately used it to shorten a SRAM 9 speed chain for an older mountain bike. I didn’t have any issues and the chain retainer clip was helpful. Overall a great chain tool.

I am very impressed. I previously purchased a cheapo chain tool at a discount retail store. It broke trying to take out my first link. Then I purchased the Topeak. It has a great feel. So much so that it says you can use it as a mini hammer. The handles both unscrew for easy transit. Extra pins can be stored in the tail. You can easily put an extension on the handles.Anyway, this tool easily took out my chain link. It took less than 1 minute - my first time taking a link out.Great buy!!
