First i will admit i have never used a bicycle chain tool before but i have used a motorcycle one which is the same concept so im fairly mechanical. Never in my wildest dreams did i think it would be so easy. If anyone is afraid to do it fear not it is very very simple provided you still have your old chain to measure against your new one.I purchased this based on reviews to replace a 15yr old chain on a Jeep mountain bike i bought at sears (yes i know its not a real bike but considering 15yrs later the tubes still hold air after never been replaced im ok with that). This tool is incredibly tiny. My first reaction was wow this will never push a pin out of a chain it is that small.Weight comparison it weighs as much or little as a garmin 500 computer (very very light). Quality after breaking old chain and sizing new chain seems very well made. How to use:First thing to do is to break the old chain off the bicycle. This is where the chain hook comes in very handy. If you loose it fear not you can make the same out of metal clothes hangers. Hook the chain hook anywhere on the chain preferably on the bottom so its easier to work with more room. Put the chain tool on the link and turn into it contacts the pin. I prefer to have it dead center on the pin even though there very small its fairly easy to do. Next step is to push the pin out. A smooth continuous motion with the hex key is best as it will give you a nice smooth effortless push. For this step if you are not reusing the chain its fine to push the pin all the way out.Second step is to cut down your other chain. Same tool used for the process the exact same way. Measure the old chain vs the new one and de-link to size. If your chain is really worn then it will be slightly off, make sure you round off the new chain to the closest link SHORTEST to the end of the chain. Use the tool to push the pin out but this time be careful not to push the pin out all the way as its needed to put the chain back together. I pushed it thru until it started just getting difficult again then stopped and pulled the link apart. Although its not recommended you shouldn't reuse the pin you just pushed out slightly as it will have slightly deformed while pushing out. Best thing to do is to replace the pin. A drop of oil on it makes it much easier to go in. There fairly cheap to buy in a pack and are good to have. If you're using a masterlink make sure you have 2 INNER links so the masterlink fits, put it on the chain give it a quick yank will squeezing the link together and done. Don't forget to lube up the pins on the masterlink as well. The chain tool looks fairly quality, was able to break a 15yr old chain and de-link a brand new KMC 7speed chain without any bending or breaking of the pin or links. Tool gets a 5 out of 5 as an initial review.Another reason to buy this over cheaper single chain tools that only have one spot to break the chain is that you can also de-stress a link that has just been re-pinned if it feels very tight.Pros: Affordable.Quality.Size.Larger hex key can be used for leverage if needed. The pin is removable it comes as the whole screw mechanism. I wasn't able to find one online except for a store in the UK. There about 4euros each so cheap replacement pin.Cons: The chain hook is very sharp at the ends i would be careful keeping this in a multibag with a tube, do not keep this in your jersey pocket.I can easily see myself losing this if i keep it somewhere and forget where it is, its really that small not really a con just a heads up.Hope this review helps and if there's any question or comments feel free to ask.P.S. Don't think of this as a shop tool that can be used heavily and roughly. Its made to use in a pinch or for the home mechanic who replaces chains a couple times a yr.Update: After buying some new tubes with removable cores the end of the tool (once you unscrew the pin) can be used to tighten removable presta cores. 2 tools in one.

This tool arrived 2 days before the estimated delivery date & was very easy to figure out. I have never had to repair a chain before & hadnt used one of these tools. It came with no instructions for use but you dont need them if you have 1/2 a brain in your head. Removing links is very easy. Everything is stored neatly in one little tool & i love the chain hook to keep the chain together until you connect the links. The only problem i had (this had nothing to do with the tool itself), was how to reset the pin back in the link after turning the tool a bit too far & the pin came completely out of the link. Easy fix with some needle nose pliers to hold the pin & a couple of light taps with a hammer. All in all i would say this is a great purchase for the price. Since breaking a chain twice in a week, i am glad i made this purchase. It gives me peace of mind to know if i break a chain while riding i can fix it quickly & be back on the road in minutes. Its a great tool every rider should have on them at all times.

I picked one of these up speficially to help me break and fit a new chain on my ebike. Theres lots of competition out there but ive had top peak gear before and know the brand, i havent had anything duff from them so far so gave it a go based on this and the fact that a) it has a chain link brace with it b) its at least half the price of some of the other brands. No problem breaking a KMC chain, less than two minutes to mount onto the chain, set it and push the pin from the link by turning the handle. I really like the brace tool that comes with it, i know you can make one yourelf from a wire hanger or piece of sturdy fence wire etc but this coming with one attched is most helpful.Ive marked it down one star, and im being very picky, getting the brace tool clipped back onto the main tool after using was a bit tricky, not frustratingly so so its not a big issue.T

First off, I'm a newbie to the world of bike repair. Needed a new chain for my Next mountain bike because I put 1000 miles on the old chain and wore it out. I knew I'd need a chain break tool, and this one got good reviews and looked high quality. When it arrived and I opened the box I almost laughed out loud. The tool was so much smaller than I thought it would be. Online it looks like a hammer. In real life it's a little Elf's tool! LOL! But when I used it to install my new Shimano CN-HG50 6/7/8-Speed Chain, this thing worked like a shop quality tool. It's a real precision tool, yet very light. That makes it easy to feel when the chain pin snaps into place. And because it's so small and light weight,I'm gonna add it to my biking back pack just in case.I would definitely recommend this tool to a friend. It's well made and well worth the money.

I own a couple bike chain tools but neither is as compact as this Topeak offering. I carry mine in the seat post bag. It is lighter and smaller than it looks. What attracted me to this tool was the detachable lever used to force out/in the chain pin AND the chain retaining spring which is seldom found in a chain tool. The chain retaining spring is a kind of '3rd hand' which prevents the chain ends from separating whilst the pin is driven out/in from the chain link. It maintains the required slack whilst the repairer, using both hands, effects repairs. Nothing can be worse than both ends of the chain suddenly parting and unravelling itself from the gear-changing mechanisms then having to feedit back through the gears: a dirty job. This chain tool is competitively priced too.

Much smaller than I expected, I struggled to grip it properly sometimes with my chunky fingers. But considering its small size, it's very sturdy and does the job. I've used many chain tools, cheap and not so cheap. Most have worked in that they take a chain link pin out, but only a couple have been up to the job of putting a pin back in straight and securely. This one does the job.I've also had chain tools where the pin push rod has deformed under pressure - never had this problem with the Topeak one. The only negative is the chain hook isn't all that good. I don't use one anyway, but tested it to see if it was any good. Several times,it just popped off the chain when the chain was moved to get to the pin.

I am a physics major in college, and we did a kinetic sculpture project that used a lot of bike chain. I was constantly changing the length of the chain all semester, fixing the chain when it broke, and I kept this thing in my pocket during the event. Never let me down. The pin didn't even break once, and I am pretty sure I broke and put chains back together at least 50 times over the course of the semester.getting rid of the junk master links helped a lot too. those things are worthless. look up how to properly use one of these tools, and never use a master link again. It is also very small. Look for the tiniest pouch you can buy to mount on your bike, and it will most likely fit.

I've not played with bikes for years but this COVID lockdown has meant I'm fixing my kids bikes .. a lot. My Children had thrown their bikes in and out of the garage with their usual speed and they'd damaged some of the derailers and these had to be replaced. To do that you needed to break and repair or replace the chain. I looked through all the different chain breakers on offer, well I tried a couple of others and this is the one I should have got in the first place. Its small (but not too small) strong but light, compact and has the chain stay all built in. Great tool, great brand, great value for what it - if you need a chain breaker, I would recommend this one.

I'm just getting back into cycling and need some tools that I've never had before. I've always been the hands-on type of person, but I never did a lot of riding. With free tune-ups to my bike from the bike shop, I've never really needed much.But...That all changed. I had some problems with my bikes and also plan on doing more riding. This little tool did the job and did it well. That being said, is it the best chain breaker out there? I have no idea. This is my first chain breaker. Did it work for me? Yes.This tool will be with me on my biking trips. I trust it and it's very small. I like that it is not only easy to use, but it seems very well built as well.

I found this to be a very good replacement to a chain tool that I had to replace (the slots that hold the chain in place bent due to a mistake on my part on a previous chain tool - but IMO, this shouldn't have allowed me to put a link in that awkward manner). The provided hex key falls out regularly on this piece but that doesn't get in the way. It's compact enough that you can use it on the road but sturdy enough that you don't feel like you're going to break it when you're using it at home. Also, you can easily feel the tool's pin pushing a link's pin through the faces of the link so it's hard to mess up).Recommended and very well priced.

Never had to work on a bike chain before until my 11 year old broke his on his brand new bike. Having ridden a bike my whole life, I have no idea how a kid could break a chain. But, mine did and I was stuck trying to figure out how to fix it without spending a ton of money at a bike shop. After some research, I bought a new chain and this tool for my son's bike. The chain was about 15 links too long. It only took a matter of seconds and I had the new chain at the right length for my son's bike. (We all learn something new everyday.)All is good . . . until he breaks the chain again. But, I now have the right tool for the job.

I ordered this chain tool and used it to remove my first bike chain. I almost damage my chain because the tool doesn't come with instructions, and the groves that hold the chain in place are a bit ambiguous as to where exactly to put the chain. A small little picture on the back of the packaging would have been great. Fortunately, no damage was done, and the tool did it's job. It feels strong enough to not break on me anytime soon, but isn't quite an everyday use tool for quality. It's good for me, since I don't plan on removing my chain any more than a few times a season (and that would be on the high side).

The only downside of this tool is that it could have come with a small protective pouch to store it in. The chain clip that holds the chain together while you use the chain tool has sharp ends that protrude out of the tool in the stored position and the sharp clip ends could puncture a spare tube if stored together in a pack. Other than that the tool is hefty yet remarkably small. I bought it as a precautionary measure but I'm sure it would easily get the job done when needed. Make your own carrying case out of some ballistic nylon from a fabric store and you will have nothing else to worry about.

I thought this is a very nice product, however no directions, and I didn't end up looking at any YouTube Videos before i used it, thus ended up pushing a rivet out of the chain, which I learned later meant that i could never get it back in. Was supposed to push it just to the end of the second chain link, but I still managed to recover the chain by removing two links. Also thought there would be a way to mount the tool to the bike, but didn't find one. Also not sure how to use one of the tools that came with it (Pin looking thing)

After destroying 2 Walmart aluminum(!!??) chain tools, I decided to step up and buy one made out of steel. I chose this Topeak tool because I know Topeak brand stuff is good quality and becasue of all the positive reviews for this particular tool. I have to say I was surprised at how small it is. That's a plus if you want to carry it with you, but I don't expect to need a chain breaker on my 10-20 mile street/bike path rides. Anyway, I have used it once and it worked like a charm. So far, I'm very happy with it.
