Since I was initially skeptical of relying on such water disinfection, I validated the Steripen in our lab: 500mL of peptone water and a single sampler to wipe out the utility toilet. the peptone water is contaminated and incubated one day for germ multiplication. Then split into two parts. The one part treated with the Steripen, the other part not. Then spread on agar slices. The result is amazing: While the plate was completely overgrown with untreated peptone water, the plate with the treated approach was not free! it actually works.

It works exactly as it says it does, although I have no more than tested it at present, but saying that I haven't died and I haven't had the trots.
