SRAM makes a great chain. I've been using them for probably 15 years. Obviously a chain isn't a very glamorous item, but by creating their power link technology, they have really revolutionized putting on and taking off a chain. Works great. All you need to do is use the chain tool to adjust length, and then you're good to go.This chain was to replace another SRAM chain, same model. By the time I replaced it, it had been on my bike for close to three years. For most of that time I was commuting on my bike. Now I lived fairly close to work, so that was only maybe a mile or two per day in commuting, with maybe another 20 miles a week in longer distance rides when the weather was nice. But still, that's probably between 600 and 1000 miles per year, and in all weather. I would ride in rain, snow, etc.During that three years, I would regularly measure the chain for any wear or stretch. And even when I replaced the chain, there was still minimal stretch. Under 1/8", measured over 6 full links, or 6 inches. It also did great as far as performance: drivetrain was always smooth. Everything was SRAM X-7, with a Truvativ Firex crank, and it was always silky smooth to shift, and very smooth when pedaling. The only reason I needed to replace the chain was that I was overseas a lot last year, and it sat in a friend's garage for over 4 months, with absolutely no attention at all. So that old faithful chain finally succumbed to rust. I'm sure I could've brought it back if I had given it a good cleaning and lube, but I figured after 3 years, I would just treat my bike to a new chain.

I own a racing road bike with 8 speed cog cassette in the back and triple crank in the front. So, its a total of 24 speed. I have noticed that the original 8 speed chain by KMC always having hard time shifting up and down gears in the back cog cassette. So, I read about people changing their chain into more narrower type like the 9 speed or 10 speed chains because they are mainly use for more cog gears in the back. As soon as I changed my 8 speed chain into a more narrower 9 speed chain, I definitely can feel the BIG difference in shifting in the back cog cassette gears. It became more smooth and easier for sure. So, the thicker the chains are, the more noise you will hear when shifting on the cog gears, because it is rubbing between gears. The narrower your chain is, the smoother it shifts. Shifting in my triple crank in the front becomes a little bit smoother too, although I really have to hold the shifting lever to be able to shift from my 42 teeth gear to higher 52 teeth gear in the front so that the narrower chain will able to catch the higher and bigger gear. But for downshift, no problem. Just notice also that I deducted about 2 links of chains from the 9 speed so that it would be the same length of chain with my 8 speed. So the the rear derailleur in the back is not too far back or too loose with the longer 9 speed chain. You have to do this to have the right length of chain for the derailleurs.

No doubt this is a great choice in bike chains. Would not for a min. Hesitate in recommending as a great replacement chain . Just a quick note you may want to concider. Like most of you I try my best to get the most from my investment. Lots of expensive fancy lubes. Special chain cleaning machines and the end result is the chains seemed to wear out rather quickley. Here is what I discovered. Once you add oil to you chain problems begin. 2 seconds into your ride that fancy lube changes from a lube to a very efficient lapping compound. The dust and grit begin the fast process of grinding your new chain to a quick death. Even the so called dry lubes are not much better. What I now do is super simple, inexpensive and tripled the expected life of the chain. Plus no more oil on the pant legs all components stay clean and shifting is greatly improved. Couple of blocks of Parrifin canning wax melted in a pot. Soak the chain. Hang and let cool and install. Simple. Using a park chain gauge I can not believe how much longer these great chains last. Best of all no more mess. Check Youtube for videos on how to wax.

SRAM chains are the best--I always buy them to replace the shimano ones that come with the bike. Why? The power link lets you easily remove & install the chain without a tool. It's especially helpful when you're trail riding and you pop a link--just throw in a spare powerlink and you're good to roll (now that I mention it, go buy a spare right now). Moreover, they spin quietly and are bullet proof. I've only broken two in about 10 years, but considering i'm a 200lb rider and ride 1000s of miles a year, that's a pretty awesome track record. There's some question about what to do with the lube that ships with the chain. Sheldon says keep it, as it does work well. But it can be messy as hell. For me,I let it get messy for a few weeks and then strip it off to put on some white lightning. Some people strip it right away b/c they prefer a clean chain. You can't go wrong either way.

After several thousand miles of use, I needed to replace my SRAM bicycle chain (on my Specialized Roubaix road bike). The chain worked very well, so I bought the same chain, SRAM PC 971, thru Amazon. The pricing was excellent, and I qualified for free shipping over $25 when I bought 2 chains (always good to have a spare around, I say). With its PowerLink connector, installing the new chain (and taking off my old chain) was super easy. The only tool I needed was my chain tool for removing excess links. Fellow bicyclists, if you have no time for any other maintenance, always try to be kind to your bike's chain! Keep it clean of dirt & grease and oil it periodically (no need to spray oil all over everything, only the rollers need one drop each).

Installed this in about 20-30 minutes. Never installed a chain before. Previous one had broken. 1/2 the time was cleaning and figuring out where the the chain tracked to. I don't have a bike stand so I just leaned the bike up against a wall. The link that you slide in was easy to understand and you could see where you slide the hinges into a bigger hole and then slight pull to snap the chain into place. The chain had oil on it so that was nice. But I did use gloves to minimize cleanup.I have a 9 speed bike and the ordering description showed this to be 9 speed. I didn't have to do any adjustments to the chain. Rode around on the bike for a bit (not too far from home) to test it out.Would buy again.

No regrets. Cheap and strong.I tried to go cheap with a PC-951 to save a buck and chewed it up (miss-shift chain suck) after only 2 rides. Bought another one of these, and I've gone months on it already. I don't like the goop they put on this chain from the factory, so I drop it in some solvent (like a WD-40 product) and brush/remove all that stuff clearly off right away. I'll clean and then bath the chain in Pedro's Ice wax afterwards. Regular maintenance after that, and you are good to go. If you are rich, spend $10 more for PC-991, but I'm not sure there is even a weight savings there.

This is a great middle of the road SRAM chain. and is part of the X.7 family. Had no issues installing on a 9 speed mountain bike. The power link technology is a nice time-saver. The chain came together with a simple click after shortened it to the correct length. I paired this with the 970 cassette and the bike is whisper quiet during pedaling and shifts flawlessly. Liked it so much that I purchased one for the my road bike that gets about 1000 miles per year of use.

Love this chain. It's similar to the old school Sedisport chains we used to use for 6 speed clusters back in the 1980's with the bowed outer-plates. I just restored a 1986 Casati Gold Line frameset and used this chain with a Regina America 7-speed freewheel and shifting improved immensely over the stock chain I was using. The bowed outer plates insure a quicker drop onto the cog when you shift and also results in overall less noisy gear changes.

This is a great chain for the price. I knocked it down a star because SRAM does not provide installation instructions, so I had to look them up on my phone with greasy fingers. Further, the instructions I did find were generic to several different chains, so kind of a hassle to figure out. I do appreciate the provided master link. That made installing the chain literally a snap (that's the sound the link made when it clicked into place).

Last longer than the 951.Worth maybe a 30% premium. Failure mode has not been stretching. On my mountain bike the front mech starts refusing to downshift long before stretch is a factor. On my road bike I broke it into two pieces on a hill at about 3000 miles (right after I announced that the chain had gone 3000 miles and was still in spec).I use Rock and Roll gold lube on this chain, and the Park chain cleaner.

This chain is of a high quality, and easy to disassemble so easy to clean!I have heard good things about SRAM/Sachs chains - better than Shimano in my experience.I have been using this on a retro MTB with 7 speed and 9 speed chains work well with 7/8 or 9 speed cassettes!FLAWLESS SHIFTING ON MY 7 SPEED GEARING and chain has been abused but hasn't broken! All in all, very happy!

I purchased this for my Santa Cruz Heckler as a replacement from 2004. I have put around 300 miles on it and have clean, crisp indexing throughout gear changes. I have Sram X-9 paddle shifters and an X0 derailleur paired with a PG 970 cassette. For the money you cannot beat it, for the weight I can stand to loose a few pounds before I spend more on less ounces!!

Replaced a Wipperman with this chain. It's way too early to rate this chain. My ratings go by quietness and chain life. So far it's quiet but I can't tell you about chain life. I was quite disappointed in the Wipperman, especially considering what I paid. If I can get 2/3 of the chain life out of the SRAM and it stays quiet, I will be way ahead dollar wise.

I had about 1500 miles on my Trek road bike.I just put this chain on and a basic Shimano cassette and it made a HUGE difference. Shifts like a dream now.I'm so glad I got the combo and did the swap before my triathlon tomorrow.Fairly easy to install. I actually prefer the kind where you just push the pin in instead of this extra link doohicky.
