I have had no problems with build quality, but I have also not put the headlight through anything more damaging than packing it tightly. The light is definitely bright without the red filter.As for the filter: it is very strong. You end up with a very pure, dim, red light. I was surprised to find that it is actually dim enough (red enough?) that it works -- unlike plenty of jokers I've seen with super bright lights and a token red gel, this really doesn't wreck my night vision. Assuming you have some moonlight it is really cool to just augment your own night vision as-needed with the red illumination.

Love this thing. 3 settings for varied brightness plus a flashing signal setting. The low setting supposedly last for long hours and is fine for basic functions. The colored inserts preserves nightvision and is low enough to not attract unwanted attention. You can still see and even read with the red light. They flip up and down so any setting can be colored, but you can only have 1 color in the unit at time...you have to open it up and swap on the plastic color filter for green or blue.

I bought this for when I'm going out flying at night and need a red light to help protect my night vision. Now I haven't been out to fly yet, but I just got this out of the box and I'm fairly certain this is going to rock. I forgot about the multiple levels of lights and tried it out at home - it works great. So far I'm thrilled.

I use this during night-time astronomy observations. It is well made, and with the lens cover in red, I don't have to keep clicking the switch to get to the red light. It has varying brightness settings, and when you need white light, simply raise the lens cover. Overall, this has been a great tool to have for my observing.

GREAT: This light will always come up in the lowest mode first! Simple but effective feature to prevent maloperation! Lowest level with red filter is optimal for cockpit use, highest even sufficient for preflighting.Bought this light about one year ago. Seems to be sturdy and long lasting.

I bought this for night flying and it is great. The slide up color lens is exactly what I need. It fits well and is lightweight.This is a must buy for flying.

Very bright. Red filter is great for astronomy or nighttime use. I use it all the time for chores where I need a light and dont want to hold a flashlight.

I have had this headlamp since 2009 I've used in Iraq and Afghanistan. It still works as good today as the day I bought it! Is a great headlamp the money.
