Very light, compact and well built, comparing to similar, but cheaper products you can buy from Home Depot. I barely can feel "it is there", when I put it on. This headlamp turned out to be surprisingly useful, perhaps, one of the most useful things I got in this price range this year! I bought it mostly to use as 1) a night red light to avoid blinding myself; 2) a reading light; 3) jogging when it is dark. It is really great for all of these. For 1), an added bonus was this light is useful when putting on contact lenses in the dark (those who use them know the eyes can be very sensitive to this procedure when you are sleep deprived). The direction of the light is fully adjustable (the lowest down is achieved with one of 2 possibe orienations). The band around the head is comfortable after I took time to adjust it. The battery compartment is easy to open with a tool included on the band buckle (someone complained it is hard to open - apparently without reading the manual). You can also use a screwdriver or coin to prop open the cover. The red light (2 settings) and white light (2 settings) are dim or bright enough for most tasks. It takes a little practice to learn how to choose a specific setting (red/white/dim/bright), but it is really easy to turn on red dim or white dim and power off with one push. The absolute longest time you can use this headlight continuosly (on red dim setting) with one battery set is rated for about 8 days (hopefully you won't find youreself in the situation for such a need). The light is rated as waterproof. I do not know for how long the head band will last upon aging, that was my only concern. No problem after 6 months. I compared this headlamp to one of those that are only sold at Home Depot: those could be brighter, but usually heavier. I found that for any of my purposes, a brighter light is not necessary (sometimes could be too bright), and less weight and compact size is actually preferred, even though costs more.I agree with one reviewer, that "black" headlight was not correctly pictured. I got black, it looks like as others pictured, and it is slightly cheaper than others (combine price+shipping).UPDATE (1.5 years later). My family is still enjoying this headlight. The head band is just fine, no signs of deterioration. The batteries last for almost a year with average use. I loved this headlamp so muach that I bought 2 more as gifts!

I really like this headlamp. The first one I received was defective, it would not turn off, and I had the option of a refund or a replacement. I choose to replace it and I am very glad I did. It is light weight, comfortable, and gives me plenty of light. I like very much that it turns on in red mode and will turn off without cycling through all the light modes (low red, high red, low white, high white). I have been using it everyday since I got it about a month ago and the batteries are still strong and haven't dimmed at all, that I can tell. And I've used it at least 20 minutes, sometimes more, a day. The only thing that has taken getting used to, is the on/off switch. It is definitely not a one finger switch like my old, cheap energizer headlamp. It requires at least two fingers and a good bit of pressure to turn it on and off. In reading other reviews I realized that this is a design feature to prevent it accidentally turning on and draining the batteries. So I'm ok with that, it just took some getting used to.I use this headlamp mainly for walking my dogs at night in the woods and I'm very happy with the illumination. The high red is usually bright enough to see by and the tilt adjustment is in small enough increments that I can adjust it precisely, unlike my previous lamp. It did not cost much more than that one, but to me it's worth a lot more and I think it's a terrific value for the money.

Great headlamp. Purchased this to replace a lost lamp of the same model/color. I have logged many hours of running, biking, and fishing, between the two. Very comfortable to wear. Lightweight, quality headband, small attaching point. Does not dig in while wearing. Size is unobtrusive, battery life is great, and lighting is ample. The red light is good in extreme dark, otherwise not very useful. Both white-light settings provide good lighting in most conditions. Beam is a bit focused, but I'd rather have focused and well lit than a wider angle and weak lighting. Very happy I was able to find this lamp to replace my old one. Look forward to many hours of use in the years to come.

This headlamp is perfect for astronomy enthusiasts. Starts as low red light when turned on. No need to cycle through varying brightness of white light when switching on or off. The low intensity of the red light is just right for managing equipment and reading charts. There is a high intensity red if you need it. The headlamp can produce plenty of white light for setup and take down. It is small and light weight so it is comfortable to wear.I've read reviews that complain about a broken battery compartment clasp after years of use. I've only had my headlamp for approximately a month. I'll have to see what happens and try to be gentle with that part.

This is a great choice for the price. The red light is perfect for walking around at night and not ruining your night vision, while the white light is plenty bright for any normal tasks around a campsite, etc. Great for regular use or for emergencies. The downside here is durability: with the low price comes relatively cheap plastic that will break if you drop the light. Once the battery cover is broken, the light is pretty useless unless you want to hold it shut with one hand (defeating the purpose of a headlamp). I still recommend this light, just be careful with it.

I've used this Fred Headlamp for a few weeks now and completely love it. I use it for outdoor chores in the evenings. It stays on over a heavy fur hat, I can easily adjust the tilt and cycle through the beam choices with gloves on. I've become addicted to a headlamp and even put one by the bed for the middle of the night trips to the loo or downstairs to add wood to the stove.I've had many other headlamps that were heavy, broke within a few days, or needed two hands to adjust--the Princeton Tec Fred is not one of them! This is an excellent, USA-made product!

I am using this headlamp for astronomy, and I like that with one click of the button, the single red LED turns on at the dim setting (double-click to turn the red LED on at bright setting). You won't accidentally turn on the 3 white LEDS because you have to hold down the button for two seconds to turn on the white LEDs (which also have a dim and bright setting). I have seen on other reviews that the battery door breaks easily, but if you use both your thumbs to support the entire door as you close it, this could help prevent it from breaking.

This is a great multi purpose head lamp. The different setting worked great as I used the headlamp to lead caving expeditions. I was able easily transition between the different lighting modes when finding myself in a tight spot in the cave. The light adjusted vertically fairly easy. I really enjoyed the red infrared light setting, allowed for effective maneuverability and sight lines. I also used this headlamp often when biking in the twilight at night. Give me a clear light, and the blinking light makes me noticeable to motorists.

Love my Fred. Watch the battery clip it can eventually crack and break. I either duck tape it or buy another because they are so cheap. Took mine two years of heavy use to crack. Great battery life especially if you don't need tons of light or don't mind red light. Perfect for light weight backpacking or to just throw in a go bag for extra hands free light. Pop in some lithium ion batteries in and you get great battery life, light weight, and and long storage time life for an emergency pack. I've always loved my Princetontec stuff

I was concerned that it only has a single on/off button, since I was concerned I might accidentally turn on the white light and piss off a lot of fellow astronomers. However a press toggles the red on and off, and you must hold the button down for several seconds to activate the white light. Almost no possibility of accidental discharge.Aimable frame, 2-setting red light, the white is very bright, lightweight.Add to it the very low price when compared to similar products and you have a winner.

So I just pulled some dryer out of the laundry and figured this, if anything, warranted a review. I found this little buddy in the bottom of the dryer. My first thought was "Oh...... [fudge]". Fudge... yeah... that was the first word that came to mind. Despite having gone through a wash and high-heat dry cycle, it still works as perfectly as when I got it. You wouldn't even know it had just been (unintentionally) abused. That's 5 stars in my book.

I'm using this in my camera bag for periodic night time work. I like that it comes on in "red" mode so I never have to worry about loosing my night vision. Seems to be of solid build and no issues for me with the battery compartment. Comfortable enough to use all evening. Wouldn't hesitate adding another to my camping supplies if I didn't have a couple other lights already. Will add a star later if it continues to work as well for a while.

I was looking specifically for a headlamp which first comes on with a low red beam to preserve my night vision. It works great for night time when I need to get up and don't want to wake up my wife and kids. Well built in the USA, good price and warrantee from Princeton Tec. The 45 lumens are deceiving since it definitely seems brighter than that and should meet the need for EDC lightning). I can highly recommend this headlamp.

I bought this to use in a field exercise. It works great in that environment as it clicks on in red light to preserve night vision. If you want white light just hold the button down and it will switch from red to white. My wife now uses it mostly for cleaning the dogs ears out, so it has a multitude of uses. The batteries are the original so they last for quite a long time. The quality of the construction is very good.

Very happy with the headlamp after about a month's use. I use it at night to read in bed. At first I thought I wouldn't like the fact that it always came on as red by default. However, after using it, I really like this feature. I makes it so you don't lose your night vision unless you really need the white light. The lamp is very comfortable. For the price this is a great lamp, I wouldn't change anything about it.
