On the face of it, the SC2008 is exactly the same as the earlier model SC2006 except for the addition of a bikini line attachment and some minor cosmetic changes. Potential lifespan of the product (number of flashes) and all other specifications are the same; once the battery or lamp dies, that’s the end of the product life as only the removable attachments can be replaced. Philips estimate the product should last for 140,000 flashes, or around 5 years when used by one person. It has a two year guarantee. The cosmetic differences between the SC2006 and the SC2008 are that the silver/white colouring on the devices have been swapped around and the soft storage bag is white rather than silver.A new model in the range usually means that previous models tend to be on special offer so it is worth checking the SC2006 vs the SC2008 for the best deals. At this stage the SC2008 hasn’t made it onto the Philips website and it doesn’t look as though the bikini attachment is available to purchase separately (yet) but the SC2006 produces good results in this area, it just may take a little longer than you may achieve using the new attachment.I have used the SC2006 for some time and it does work as long as you fall into one of the suitable user-categories and follow the instructions. It will take a few weeks before you see results if you are a first time user but after a few months of use hair growth does become sparser, finer and much less noticeable. It isn’t a permanent means of hair removal and if you stop using the IPL hair will eventually grow back.• So, who is it suitable for?The IPL hair removal system is not suitable for use by everyone and it would be advisable to consult the manual (available at the Philips’ website) for the full and extensive list of do’s and don’ts before proceeding. Broadly the darker your skin tone and the lighter your hair, the less likely this will be suitable for you – it just won’t be effective on white, grey, light blond or red hair and if your skin tone is too dark you might suffer adverse reactions such as burning. There is a chart that provides an ‘at a glance’ for skin and hair colour and clearly identifies those for whom the Lumea will not be effective as well as the suggested intensity levels in use if the system is suitable for you. There are also a list of medical conditions that render it unsuitable, such as diabetes, lupus or varicose veins. You need to avoid tanning for 24 hours after use as well as for two days before and a skin test is also recommended in all cases to check you don’t have an adverse reaction. Again I would suggest referral to the manual for full details of all conditions that render the unit unsuitable as the list is quite extensive.Basically if you have no medical conditions that preclude use, the lighter your skin tone and the darker your hair, the more likely the Lumea will produce pleasing results.• Getting startedThe Lumea arrives boxed with a charging cable, three different attachments (one for body is attached already and there is a separate one for the face and bikini line with additional filters) and a storage pouch. It also comes with a detailed instruction manual, which you can read whilst waiting for the unit to charge for first use (which takes about 90/100 minutes) and a quick start guide. The treatment area needs to be shaved first (specifically do not use depilatory cream or epilate as the Lumea targets the hair follicle) and you are guided to do a skin test 24 hours in advance of a main treatment to check to any adverse reactions. My skin is pale and I have dark hair, so I can use the unit at the highest light intensity level of 5 but I started out by testing at the lowest level 1 and increased gradually to 5 so I could timidly make sure there would be no pain. I experienced no skin reactions and absolutely no discomfort - all I could feel was some occasional mild warmth on my skin immediately after the flash even at the highest setting.• In useThe unit is a good size; not so large that it gets in the way but big enough that you can see what you are doing when trying to get to harder to reach areas such as the back of your legs. It is cordless so needs to be charged before use but if you get in the habit of charging after every use, it’ll be ready when you next want to use it.• Treatment TimesThe revelation for me was the speed of use; one flash and you move onto the next area; whilst the treatment area is fairly small (even with the larger body application attachment), this means you do not have to dedicate hours to the task at hand.New users are guided to start off using the unit every two weeks for the first 4 to 5 treatments (after shaving so you avoid the smell of scorched hair as well as the potential to contaminate the treatment window). You may not notice any difference at all for the first handful of uses but eventually you should find hair regrowth slows although you do need to maintain top ups from time to time as removal is not permanent. After a few years of using an IPL system, I repeat the process probably every 7 to 8 weeks for maintenance. Any regrowth is patchy and soft, much less noticeable than I associate with other methods of hair removal.Pros:• Preparation is the key and, other than slight warmth from time to time, I did not feel anything.• Easy to use.• Cordless, enabling treatment to be undertaken at a distance from a socket.• Fast and long-lasting results with increasingly long intervals between treatments with time.• Separate attachments for face and bikini line.• No ingrowing hairs.Cons:• Cordless use, so you need to wait for the unit to charge.• Small treatment area per flash.• No replaceable parts (except attachments).• Not suitable for use by everyone; it really is a good idea to check the Philips’ site to read through the manual to ensure it’s suitable for you.

The Philips SC 2008-11 Lumea is an improvement on earlier cheaper similar models produced by Philips. The improvements include a bikini line attachment, a longer lasting renewable battery, and minor improvements in appearance. A white storage bag is provided.Using light-based hair removers is less painful and quicker than waxing, shaving, and epilation. Hair is not removed permanently and regular repeat treatments are necessary, otherwise hair is liable to regrow. Philips estimates that the product life is 140,000 light flashes, which is about 5 years of average use. The lamp is guaranteed for 2 years. Although this hair remover may seem expensive it is considerably cheaper and more intimately convenient that repeated visits to a beauty salon.Professional light-based hair remover models used in salons often cost several thousand pounds £, so Philips, by producing this range of models, can be said to be making the technique available for self-treatment at a relatively reasonable cost, although this model is definitely an expensive top of the range. It is wise to read the full manual at Philips website before buying, since there are several types of hair and skin colour, as well as certain medical conditions, which make this type of machine unsuitable. The non-use list is extensive, but here are the main ones: skin cancer, multiple non-typical moles in the areas you are thinking of treating, freckles, warts, any collagen disorder, keloid scar formation, slow healing of wounds, varicose veins, skin which is sensitive to light, rashes and allergic reactions, skin infections, eczemas, burns, inflammation of hair follicles, open wounds, lupus, herpes, haematomas, tattoos, epilepsy, diabetes, porphyria, heart disease, HIV infections, AIDS. Also, if you are taking certain medications treatment is not recommended, eg painkillers, anti-coagulations, immuno-suppressives, even large doses of aspirin. Best not use during pregnancy. (NB. It can still be used over moles, etc, if one protects them with a white reflective covering, eg use a cosmetic white pencil etc).In general, people with very pale blonde, red or white hair will find the treatment ineffective, and very dark coloured skin tones are susceptible to burning reactions. Philips recommends the selection of the correct intensity level of the Lumea light beams for different skin and hair pigmentations, although in personal practice this has been found not to be absolutely critical. You need to avoid both artificial and natural tanning for 24 hours after use as well as for two days before use. A preliminary skin test is also recommended in order to see if there are any negative reactions. If your skin is pale and you have dark hair, you can use the hair remover at the highest light intensity level of 5, but if your skin is dark, or your hair is very blonde, it is recommended to start the skin test by setting the lowest light level at 1, and then gradually increasing up to 5, to make sure there is no burning sensation experienced. Also one may prefer to use the top 5 setting on tougher areas of the body, eg legs, and a lower setting, eg 2 or 3, on sensitive areas, such as the armpits and face. A safety device prevents the light laser from firing unless it is pointed at, and sealed correctly and tightly, against the skin. This is to prevent the intense laser light from flashing into anyone’s eyes by mistake. A helpful safety feature. The Lumea comes with a charging cable and has three different attachments: one for the body, one for the face, and one for the sensitive bikini line which has extra filters. Each attachment has a different type of coloured filter. There is a quite detailed instruction manual. The machine is cordless and it takes about 1 ½ hours to fully charge up before it can be used. Recharge it immediately after use, otherwise the battery life will shorten. The area of the body you wish to treat has to be shaved before starting the light treatment, because the intense light flashes are aimed at the hair follicle roots and long hairs would inhibit a sufficient degree of penetration and even possibly singe.Treatment is very quick… select an area, trigger just one flash, and go on to the next area. There is an interval of about 2 to 3 seconds between flashes. Each treatment area is fairly small, but larger with the body attachment, and it takes about 8 minutes to complete one leg, about 4 minutes for the face, about 10 minutes for the armpits. Because the battery may run out and require recharging before completing both legs and armpits, it may be necessary to stagger treatment over a few hours. Begin by treating the body hair at 2 week intervals, then later reduce treatment to once every 6 weeks, then finally 8 week intervals are all that is necessary. It may take several weeks before results become noticeable. The machine works by producing intensive pulsed light beams, a type of ultra fine laser, which affect the melanin in the hair root-follicles, putting them into a dormant state. Consequently the hair falls out and does not grow again, provided the area is retreated from time to time. Being cordless the Lumea can be used in a bathroom etc, where there are no power sockets. It is a well designed tool, easy to use, very effective at hair removal, stylish, with low operating costs, and definitely 21st century. Questions could be asked about its initial high purchase cost, the relatively short expected product life, the necessity of repeat treatments. But overall… it is a brilliant and useful invention.

I have used an IPL hair removal device in the past - this is significantly better than others on the market in my opinion, for its versatility, ease of use, compact size and long-term cost effectiveness. The device comes with three interchangeable attachments; one with a larger light treatment window covering 4 square centimetres for use on legs and body, two other attachments have smaller windows for use on the face and bikini area /underarms. They are clearly marked with graphics of the face and bikini area, so as not to confuse them. The user manual is extremely extensive, and I strongly recommend sitting down to read this, perhaps whilst this cordless device charges. It's smaller than all but the smallest of travel hairdryers in size, so won't take up much room in the bedroom. Before you buy - contra-indications:There is a lot of information on who should not use the device - like other IPL devices it cannot be used on white/grey, very light blonde or red hair. Other contra-indications are users of AHA and BHA skin treatments, topical isotretinoin and azelaic acid. Anyone who has used isotretinoin Accutane or Roaccutane in the last six months is advised that this treatment can make the skin more susceptible to tears, wounds and irritations. It is not recommended for use by pregnant and breast feeding women, nor by people with light sensitive skin, collagen disorders amongst others. It cannot be used on very deeply tanned skin - people of skin type VI - or people with skin colour of brown/black or darker. It IS suitable for skin tones from white through to dark brown, providing the hair is not white, light blond or red. This is a real selling point, and made possible by the fact that the IPL can be set at a range of intensities from 1-5. The lower settings of 1,23 are those suitable for medium brown and darker skins, 4 and 5 for white, beige and light brown skin. It can be used 48 hours after exposure to the sun, on tanned skinCharging is done via a standard three pin plug type adapter which is included - there is no need to use a shaver socket. Charging took an hour and a half. The device is very quick and easy to use on shaved areas once it is charged. It is switched on via an on/off button and the light intensity is selected. I have very light beige skin with dark body hair so chose setting 5. The head of the device has to placed at 90 degrees to the skin, an innovative safety ring means it cannot be used unless correctly placed. When this is done, a 'ready to flash' green light shows at the back of the device. For this reason, it's easiest to use the device on the face when looking in a mirror. The flash button on the handle is then pressed and the flash delivered to the skin. There is no need for goggles or to look away as with other devices, with the device having to be held flush to the skin to be used, the flash is not visible. It's possible to keep a finger on the flash trigger and slide the device to an adjacent area to deliver the flash as there is a gap of a few seconds between flashes.I used it on my bikini area and underarms after shaving and found it significantly less painful than a previous device, so much so that I actually wondered if it was working. Then the device flashed a short hair that I'd missed with the razor, there was a brief smell of burning and a definite sharp pain. Afterwards my skin wasn't tender or reddened other than where I'd missed that hair. So do shave carefully, is my adviceThe advice is also given that dark skin areas such as moles be protected by using a white eye pencil over them, along with the edge of the lips when the facial flash is used. A skin test 24 hours before use is also recommended for facial areas. The recommendation is that 4 or 5 treatments be given at two-weekly intervals, followed by maintenance treatments every 4-8 weeks as needed. Due to the way hair grows, some hairs will regrow after the first few uses and this process is carefully explained in the booklets with the device. There is no need to buy expensive gels to use this, and the life of the device is given as being at 5 years plus - refill cartridges are not needed. It also comes with an attractive white zipped lightly padded storage bag with an internal pocket to keep attachments safe.Summary: This is wonderfully easy to use and virtually discomfort free when used correctly, following the manufacturer advice given. Suitable for a much wider range of users than many other IPLs.

Posted by me, as tested by my daughter:There are plenty of really great, very in-depth reviews posted already, so I wanted to write something more succinct for people looking for an overview.Firstly it is important to emphasise that this is not a device that you just use a few times and expect to completely stop hair regrowth without continued usage. Regrowth will be “inhibited” (as it says in the Quick Start Guide) and the aim of the product is that you will, after four or five treatments every two weeks, be then only using the device every four to eight weeks. So yes it is a “hair regrowth prevention system” but not a permanent one. Don't expect the impossible!Secondly – this is not a device for everyone. It won't be fully effective for those of us with “white”, “grey”, “red” or “light blond” hair or people with “brownish black and darker” skin tone and may have little effect at all.My only issue with what it promises in terms of usability is that I found it took me an hour to do the whole of my two lower legs to above the knee which the Quick Start Guide claims will take eight minutes per leg. I'm sure I will get a bit faster but can't imagine getting to that speed.I am a tough customer so I acquired the device without the highest of hopes. I have very white skin and my hair is light to dark blonde. So on some areas it should just work but I am borderline. It is impossible to report back after a month with firm conclusions on whether the device works fully as described, so I will add to the post in a few months’ time to let you know how I've progressed. I do however see good potential with this device even for people with colouring such as myself. My leg hairs are going to be the trickiest as in some light, they are definitely light blonde. I do however see some slight initial regrowth prevention on my bikini line after 2 treatments but I will follow up on that to be certain. The bonus points of this device are• COST: It will save you a lot of money over undergoing treatment at a beautician's. The cheapest I could find treatments would be in London using a voucher site where I found a 20 minute appointment for £20 to £30. For this you could probably get down your bikini line and underarm or both your lower legs (quicker when someone else is doing it!). So you would still need to go every two to four weeks for the first four or five treatments and then every six to eight weeks after that, so considering that you could roughly be covering the device's cost after not too long – quicker if you share it with your mates.• CONVENIENCE: being able to have a home device and use the product as when you can, after your shower etc. is priceless.• PAIN: I do not have a high pain threshold - very sensitive skin that marks easily and have to have the device on its highest setting for my skin and hair type – but it is very manageable and I was very pleased. The plastic fitting of the filter attachment gets very hot with continued usage but only for a moment after you pulse the light. It does give you a quick hot sensation but does not burn. I did have some red marks after use but I am really very sensitive with that and they were only temporary and faded within 15 minutes. I found it less painful than having the treatment done to me by a beautician as I was expecting the pulse of light each time.• USABILITY: Philips make excellent electronic devices. They are always designed beautifully, with usability on upmost consideration. This device achieves exactly all that and is beautifully packaged. The Quick Start Guide is great and the whole experience seemed clear and easy. The device itself works very well. It's easy to hold, very ergonomic, like a very small hairdryer. In this way I found it a pleasant experience to use it. Some areas of the body are tricky to get a flat surface for the device to get full surface connection with but I found work-around techniques of moving some skin towards the shin bone for example so that full contact could be made. Overall it feels a very safe and easy device to use.

Philips SC2008/11 IPL Lumea Precision Plus Hair Regrowth Prevention System.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I handed this device over to my daughter who is ‘in’ to anything that will help here look better. She used to work in a salon as a part time job and is familiar with this technology. In the box.--------------He main unit, bikini head, face head, instructions and warrantee information. What is it?--------------This is a hair removal system that uses IPL (Intense pulsed light) technology. This is a safe non-invasive technology that has been around for quite a long time in the salon industry.Philips have made it available for home use and brought the price down significantly over the last ten years. When I was studying at Uni I used to work in a salon on the weekends and these guns then were thousands of pounds and treatments coast £80 per hour back then (about 10 years ago). How it works.------------------IPL started life in the medical profession to treat skin lesions and diseases. It was noticed that hair growth was reduced after these treatments and from the hair growth reduction treatment using IPL emerged. It works by rapidly pulsing light onto an area. The light retards the growth of hair at a follicle level. It does not stop it completely but slows it down significantly in the majority of cases. There have been no reported major problems except that you must not overdo it and some skin types are more sensitive than others to the light pulses. Read the enclosed instructions carefully before trying and test on an area that’s out of the way!Effectiveness.-------------------These Philips units are well researched and pulse light at around 140,000 pulses per second. I have dark black hair which is very visible if it grows where you don’t want it and shaving, waxing and epilation treatments are not very effective on me and sometimes quite painful (waxing!)Having used this treatment before I found it very effective and it is painless, you just get a warm feeling on the area being processed. I got it for little money when I used to work in a salon but never afford regular treatments. However, Philips have revolutionised this market with their home use guns. I have only used this gun a few times but it is easy to use with no side effects and it appears to be slowing hair growth.I have not used the facial attachment yet and will report back over the next few weeks to let you know how it is going.Overall.----------This is a well-made gun with useful attachments for those delicate areas. It is very well made and easy to use. It is effective for my hair and skin type and will reduce the need for the more painful treatments. There are various guns in the Philips range but they are all based on the same main system, only the attachments seem to very looking at the specifications. So far so good, I’ll give it 5 starts as the technology is good and Philips has made it somewhat affordable over the salon costs. I will add to this review over the weeks as I use the system more. So far very pleased with the technology and system.

I used this at the weekend on my upper lip. I shaved first as advised then used this laser. It was perfectly painless and left no redness or soreness.I used it with the face attachment, there are two, one for face and one for body. After shaving you place the gun on your face making sure that it is covering the whole area under the attachment you then get a green flashing light on the back saying ready, you then squeeze the gun. When you do this it gives off a quite a big red flash which made me jump so be forewarned, this is only the laser doing its job though, its just a bit of shock when it flashes.I found it best sitting in front of the mirror that way you see the green ready light in themirror so you know exactly when to squeeze. You are advised constantly not to go over skin already treated as this doesnt make the treament work any better or faster so patience is the word.It is a process that takes weeks to take effect, everyone is different so this can vary. After the first treatment you wait two weeks before repeating and this can take several sessions to see the results. Once the hair has virtually stopped growing you just need to repeat every month or so.The idea is to kill the hair off at the roots, hair colour, thickness and speed of regrowth can all affect the time scale on this. This is an entirely new concept for me so I`am looking forward to have a hair free top lip. I must say after my first attempt I was pleased. My next project is hubby`s back hair. This is a very expensive piece of kit but it is something that will be used over again for any unwanted facial or body hair. Once my excema has cleared up I will be doing my legs ready for the summer I cant wait to have whisker free legs.My daughter is keen to try it as well, she`s off on her hols so needs to do the bikini line.To conclude I`am very pleased with the result so far, no upper lip hair, smooth finish and lighter so all`s good .I will be updating each after each session over the next few months just to let you know how its going and a final note I do think its very important to thoroughly read the instruction book before you start.UPDATE: I have just given myself a second treatment on my facial hair, I turned it up a notch from last time and all I felt was a little heat. I was surprised about the little regrowth from my first time using this, there was hardly any.I think the only thing I would change is next time I think I will wax my top lip the day before I use this rather than shave. This seems to be working well Im just a bit worried that by shaving if it doesn't work completely I will end up with whiskers, but with saying that it has worked surprisingly well after just one go I'm just a bit of a worry pot.I also did my legs this time and started on number two after first using my lady shaver so I will let you know on this one two.Haven't got round to doing hubby's back yet he`s always working but I will! This time I also used the body fitting and did my legs as well starting on number two so I will let you know how I go next update.

This looks like something from Star Trek when you first get it. I have never used an IPL device before like this, so it was all very new to me and it does look like a lazer gun from sci fi shows. Anyway, this comes with a pouch to keep it in and a few attachments, for the different areas, like the face and the bikini line.Firstly and most important of all is that you check that you can use it, as there is an extensive list of do's, don'ts and precautions for use on the Philips website, that cover skin tone, hair colour and even illnesses and disorder's that make this unsuitable for use by some people. My main concern in this area, is that people do not always know if they may have some of these problems, especially if they have never been diagnosed? So that is a bit worrying when you see them all. It may even be worth consulting a doctor before you use it!So, I have dark brown hair and average to fair skin, so it is ok for me to use and as far as I am aware, I am not suffering from any of the listed ailments either!Firstly you need to charge up the unit which takes a few hours, then you can use it wherever you feel most comfortable using it, but it is advisable it is in a well lit room where you can see well and won't miss area's. It takes ages! Never having done it before, it really took time having to shave first and going quite slowly, so be sure to allow yourself a couple of hours if you are new to it like me, it is certainly not something you can do quickly before a night out! The face, legs and arm pits are the easiest areas to do, but I really did not enjoy trying the bikini attachment. I am a bigger girl so to speak and the unit is quite bulky, so there is not a great deal of room for manoeuvrings down there. I don't think I would try it again for that purpose.I have been quite happy with the results so far, although it is not a permanent solution and the hair does grow back, just at a slower rate and I think I will need to use it on a regular basis to get longer lasting results, so we'll see how it goes. I am most happy with the removal of hair from my face, as I have PCOS and this is the most embarrassing for me as a woman to have hair on my face. I may even get my mum to try it, as she also has the condition and suffers worse than I do.I think the only other concern I have is that once this stops working you cannot replace parts and you have to buy a new one. I was lucky enough to get one of these for free, but I'm not sure I could afford to replace it at it's current price, as it is so expensive. But maybe as this kind of thing becomes more popular and the technology improves, the price may come down. I believe that beautician sessions for this treatment are extremely expensive anyway, so I guess if you have that kind of money to spend and you want to save on shop prices and do it yourself, then it is probably a bargain, especially during regular use, as the cost would soon mount up.

The Philips SC2008/11 Lumea Precision Plus IPL is a hair regrowth prevention system for your face and body that uses Intense Pulsed Light (‘IPL’) to achieve its (usually) permanent results.WHAT YOU GET:The product arrives in a medium-sized box which opens out to reveal the device with its two interchangeable heads, a handy pouch, mains charger and a clear and easy-to-follow instruction manual. These are all packages behind a clear plastic covering which is sealed tight to show it is new, unused, and 100% clean.SET-UP:Using the Lumea is an absolute doddle. There’s pretty much no set-up required. However, you do need to read through the included instruction manual thoroughly, and ensure that you have suitable hair colouring and skin type for using the Lumea. Obviously you’ll want to do this BEFORE forking out a fair few hundred for the device, so it’s very highly recommended that you have a look over the Philips product page in detail. However, in a nutshell, if you’ve got light blond, red or white/grey hair then it’s a no, and if you’ve got very dark skin then it’s also a no.Once you’re happy that the Lumea is suitable for you, then you just need to fully charge up the device, freshly shave the chosen area, and you’re good to go.IN USE:Using the Lumea is really incredibly simple. First you set the strength of the device to the setting suitable for your skin type. Then position it at a 90 degree angle to your skin and hold down the trigger. You’ll see a small, quite intense flash from around the side of the Lumea’s head, and that’s it. No discomfort, no pain, no irritation (that we can report at least). The device won’t work unless the head is firmly pressed against your skin (a reassuring safety feature). It also takes a few seconds between flashes. So if you’re planning on doing your entire legs in one go, then you’ll be at them for a little while on each occasion.THE RESULTS:The results are far more impressive than both my wife and I thought they would be. After the first session, my wife reported re-growth took noticeably longer, and the hair seemed more wispy and fine. The same applied to my (ahem) sporadic back hair, which took around 3 weeks to raise its ugly head again. Session two seems to have had an even greater affect. The manual does state that you’ll need a number of sessions before hair regrowth is pretty much (if not entirely) dead.SUMMARY:I was sceptical. My wife was even more so. But even after just over a month of using the Lumea we’ve changed our position. The Lumea really seems to work. If it doesn’t 100% kill off the hair root, then at the very least it means a hell of a lot less shaving/waxing etc. And at the end of the day, that’s pretty much the only reason why people would think about purchasing one of these devices. It drastically reduces or even permanently removes the need for shaving or waxing. And for that it does the job really very, very well.

This machine is virtually identical to the previous model, with the notable exception that it has an extra attachment for the bikini line. I have the previous model and as such, I can already tell you that it's a very good investment and it will lead to a massive reduction in body hair - provided that you're constant and use it regularly every two weeks for the first few months. Here are my FAQs:**Does it hurt?**Not particularly. Compared to professional clinic-level laser, I found using the Lumea less painful on my face (Level 4, facial attachment). The lamp does get hot with use (this is normal), so I would suggest using the Lumea on more sensitive areas first (face, armpits, bikini line)and then areas such as arms and legs. So far, the area in which I felt the most discomfort is the armpits.**Is it easy to use?*Yes. The machine is designed to be used at a certain angle so it won't fire unless you hold it down correctly, but the green light at the back will show you when it's ready. You can hold the Lumea facing forward or backwards, and you will be able to see the green light from both sides, but you will need a degree of contorsionism to reach places like the back of your legs. You could, of course, get a friend to help you. It can also get a little tricky on bony areas where the machine doesn't make good contact with the skin.I recommend investing in a white eye pencil will help you mark the areas you have covered.**Is it safe?**So far, I've experienced no adverse reactions, despite starting the treatment at a high setting. The area treated might look a little red afterwards but that doesn't last long. The bikini line area obviously is more sensitive - I put a thin layer of an antiseptic cream like Germolene a couple of hours after the treatment, just to prevent any possible reactions. It's important to wear sunscreen on any body part that is exposed to the sun for a couple of days after the treatment.**What else do I need to know?**You may need to charge the machine in between body areas - I can do lower arms, armpits, face and bikini line, and one lower leg before having to recharge it.You will need to keep a record of when you treated what areas and at what setting so that you can repeat the treatment every two weeks - this has to do with the hair growth cycle. The instruction booklets has a table you can fill in by hand, or you can make a note on a spreadsheet, like I do.**Why are you not giving this product five stars?*Because of the way it's activated, the machine only really works on fleshy tissue. So if you're trying to treat awkward areas like knees, toes, jawline etc - it will be tricky to get the Lumea to 'fire'. Maybe in the future the manufacturer could implement a special attachment for these areas.

The initial outlay for this gadget is quite daunting so it’s no surprise that with hardly any reviews Amazon would seek to obtain some reviews via the Vine program. Unfortunately Vine doesn’t really give you time to really try out the product over the many weeks required to see positive results before you have to write a review. So what follows is a bit of ‘meta’ review based on others I have read on various other trustworthy web sites.Suffice to say up front that this product does work - there are noticeable results after about 8 weeks - that’s four sessions with two weeks in between each one. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth the money compared to other methods of hair removal, but it seems to me that beyond salon treatments this is the only one that can effectively prevent hair regrowth through the appliance of science. The next disappointingly important thing to note is that the Philips Lumea is not designed for everyone. If any of the following is true for you, then this gadget is NOT suitable for you:• Your natural hair colour is light blonde, white, grey or red.• Your natural skin tone is dark brown or very dark brown.• You rarely or never get sunburnt.• You tan very darkly.Philips Lumea has been optimised for use by women but recent research showed that it can be used by men on most areas of the body, EXCEPT the beard and scrotum. Also, there are medications and health conditions that may lead to adverse reactions when you use Philips Lumea. So in a nutshell, to get the most out of the Lumea you need to be a woman with naturally fair skin and naturally dark hair. The machine is very simple to use, especially using the ‘hold down and glide’ method. Underarms and bikini line take minutes to zap and after just a few sessions (8 weeks) your bikini line will be virtually hairless and after 12 weeks you’ll reportedly have no hair growth. This timeline was a consistent feature of a lot of those (some initially sceptical people) who used the Lumea.A number of reviews I read favourably compared the results to expensive professional treatments received at salons and many bemoan the fact that they had not discovered this gadget sooner and saved themselves years of leg shaving or waxing.A reported disadvantage is that the Lumea cannot be used while it is being charged and sometimes you’re your trying to do your whole body (legs, underarm and bikini area) a fully charged battery needs recharging before you have finished.I hope this helps. If not Google the product like I did and find those other reviews!

Out of the box the Lumie Precision Plus needs to be charged for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Next you need to refer to the manual to decide which skin type you are.The section in the manual for skin type is under recommended light intensity and you need to choose from six different skin type categories which relate to the 1 to 5 settings on the Philips Lumea device handle. My wife’s category was – Light brown (sometimes sunburn, good tanning) which recommends the device setting of 4/5.The manual does state the device should not be used if your body hair colour is white/grey/red/light brown or if you have the following skin colour and characteristics – Brownish black and darker (rarely to never sunburn, very dark tanning). There’s three heads in the box, one is already attached out of the box which is for body, the second is for your face and on the head attachment it has a little picture icon of a face on it. The third head attachment is for your bikini area and also has a little picture icon of a bikini on it.Next you have to shave the area you are planning to use the hair removal device on and make sure it’s completely free from hair and any oily substances like perfumes or deodorant. If the area is not properly shaved the attachments could become contaminated and effect the results.Once you are ready to go, you turn on the device via a button on the handle and choose the correct setting for your skin type. The device makes a very low whirring noise similar to a hairdryer but very, very quiet. You place the hair removal device at 90 degrees on the skin so the attachment is in contact with the skin. Then press the safety ring fully on to the skin and the light band on the back of the device will light up green when you have made full skin contact. You then press on the trigger which releases a red flash on to the screen similar to a camera flash and feels warm on that area, not hot, just a little warm. You then move on to the next area and repeat. The device is very easy to use and the instructions are very easy to follow. It’s too early to fully review the results yet but so far my wife is really impressed with the Philips hair removal device. You need to repeat the process every two weeks for the first two months.A skin test in a small area is recommended and you are advised to wait 24 hours in case of any reaction to the device. The Philips Lumea Precision Plus has great reviews and does seem an expensive purchase but my wife believes it is worth every penny.

Firstly, this review will form part one of two. The initial results are in, but as to the long-term effects on hair growth, etc., a further review will be necessary and I will submit this at a later date.Having worked with lasers and IPL systems myself, it is important to remember that the IPL is not a laser. It is a light delivery system of wavelengths 400-1200 nanometres, with different filters to target different components of the skin, i.e., melanin for hair and haemoglobin for red blood vessels, etc. This led me to be initially quite sceptical about the results as the IPL system cannot be as powerful as a laser at removing hair. However, it is worth noting that the safety profile will therefore be better, together with lower risks and costs. The system is quite sleek, complete with a little carrying case. There are different heads for different areas and these are clearly labelled and easy to detach and reattach. The starting instructions are very clear and include a detailed schematic about the different skin types and settings. It is essential that you read this carefully, because if you have a dark complexion, it may destroy the melanin in your skin rather than the hair! There is a useful treatment schedule leaflet for recording all your initial treatments and what settings you use. This helps to ensure that you undertake them at the right time and intensity.I found the system easy to use and have tried it out on my face, legs, underarms and bikini line. I have very pale skin and dark hair, so was able to use the maximum setting. I didn’t find this particularly uncomfortable - the sensation is a little like being pinged with a rubber band. It felt quite hot, but it wasn’t sore.I performed an initial skin test on each area, with no visible rashes or swelling and have since completed a full treatment. The manual states it will take approximately two weeks, or a couple of treatments, to see effects of hair falling out. I have already noticed that the finer facial hairs have visibly reduced after five days.My hopes are high for this system. I dread the inconvenience (and embarrassment) of having to grow the unwanted hair before it can be threaded or waxed. Considering the cost of the treatment, if this system continues to be effective it could pay for itself quite quickly!I am unable to give you a longer-term report, as I am required to submit a review within thirty days. However, I will keep you updated with further developments.

Prior to using this at-home laser hair removal device I had went to a beauty salon to get IPL for my face and underarms. I had bought 10 sessions for both areas. Long story short it did reduce hairs but only ever so slightly -- not satisfactorily because I had spent a fortune on it to see very little results.I bought this in August 2015 (well over a year ago) and I have been so pleased with the results. At the beginning I used it more frequently because I felt my hairs were still thick and growing back quickly. Nowadays I pick it up once in a while just to "touch-up".The Good:- Noticeable results. I’ve used this on most of my body parts, not just my face and underarms and I have noticed such a difference and very satisfying results. At the beginning, some areas were more sensitive than others so I can’t handle the maximum level (5) as it was very painful but as my hairs got lighter over time, I gradually increased the settings. This was one of the indicators for me that I was seeing REAL RESULTS!- Surprisingly cost effective. I could have bought 3 of these for the price of my salon experience (10 sessions)! And this one I actually see a noticeable difference and I have had well over 10 sessions on different parts of my body. And now I do it myself in the comfort of my own home.- Comes in different size heads: a normal sized, smaller one for the face, and one for bikini area. The Bad:- I must have been unlucky and got a defective charger. When I first got it I noticed the charger wasn’t that great – only certain positions of the cord made it charge the device. So I end up having to fiddle with the cords before it actually charges. Didn’t think much of it at the time. Until it got worse to the point it wasn’t charging at all so I contacted Philips. They were very kind to send me a replacement charger for free (under warranty). The new one charges straight away. No longer have this issue.Overall, I highly recommend this product. I wish I had known about it before I went and spent a fortune at the salon to get disappointing results. I haven’t left a review since 2009 and with this product I really felt the need to share the impressive results with others.PS. I noticed some reviews saying the restriction of this particular product is that it's not suitable for people with darker skin tones and light-coloured hair -- but this actually applies to ALL laser/IPL hair removal and not only for this particular device!

Be sure to read the instructions; the quick start instructions are great and the fact that they are printed in colour really helps when determining your appropriate power setting based on skin and hair tone. They are very wordy though so allow yourself half an hour to read them. I would advise reading the instructions carefully - there are lots of safety warnings! The handset initially feels light in the hand with a good-sized handle which I found I was able to use comfortably in either hand and even upside down. After a while it can start to feel a little heavy, particularly when you’re holding unusual poses for those tricky to reach areas, but a quick adjustment of grip and change of arms fixes this. The system comes with interchangeable heads for different areas of the body which are easy to identify by the small symbols printed near the lens. They are easy to detach and replace; but not so easy that they fall off which robust handling.Controls are easy and intuitive. The large ‘ready’ indicator light makes pacing of treatments easy and provides a target to look at so you aren't looking towards the intensely bright flash. The size of the indicator also means you can see it clearly even when treating hard-to-reach areas. The process is quick, taking around 2 seconds between pulses, so that even the small treatment areas permit didn't prevent me from doing my lower leg in around 8 minutes. Overall both legs, including the required initial shave, took me little over 45 minutes - easy to fit into a fortnightly routine.Initial use took a few minutes of practice, particularly over bony areas like knees, but once you get the hang of it its quick and easy. The integrated fan for cooling the electronics and flash gun is quiet and discreet, but the intensity of the light pulses will make it difficult to do while your other half is sleeping. The retail box is great, but bulky, so I expect most people would opt for the small zip bag for keeping the IPL gun and accessories together. The bag has a neat pocket for the extra lenses and wall charger but you will struggle for space - and I’d prefer it if there was room to keep the quick start manual inside for reference. I imagine I’ll end up finding an alternative bag to keep it all together.Overall - love it, looks great, easy to use, great quality construction and well designed. Can’t speak for how effective it is after only one use, but I look forward to finding out!

This is an expensive item but it works well providing you meet the criteria for its use. So before you considering purchasing ensure you note that Philips Lumea only works effectively on dark blonde, brown and black hairs. As with other light-based treatments, it is not effective on red, dyed, light-blonde or white/grey hair or very dark skin. There is also a list of medical conditions and medications which render this unsuitable for use from page 11 onwards of the user manual, which can be found in PDF format link on the Amazon product page (and also of course on the Philips website). If you meet the criteria though this is an excellent, pain free system to remove and keep away body hair. The differences between this and the model below are small, and I'm not entirely convinced that this justifies the difference in prices between the two. The main difference (only difference in fact) is the inclusion of a bikini line attachment with this model. So it is up to you, the buyer, to decide whether this is worth the extra over the model below (the SC2006/00). In truth this is my only small gripe with this otherwise excellent device. The Lumea is sleek and easy to handle, especially because its wireless and providing you use the right setting (the device has several settings as well as attachments, for different areas of the body) you should start to see results, meaningful results anyway, straight away, with future hair growth becoming less apparent after a month to ten weeks or so. We've found that as you use it more, the need for such frequent re-treatments becomes less and less.To use you basically shave first, then dry your skin. You then mark out any moles, freckles etc with a white pencil to shield them from the device. Then you press the device onto your skin, wait until the light turns green and then press the flash button to start removing hair. We found the battery lasted easily enough for a few applications too, but charging is easy anyway. To do legs it takes about 8 minutes per leg, with the rest of the body taking significantly less time. The hair removal is obviously much less painful than strips or epilators but you do need to give the device time, and stick to the instructions, if you want to see a more permanent change. As I say, it can take up to 10 weeks, so bear with it, we've found that it's worth it if you can afford it.
