First impression: it's large. It's a long as my hand.Second impression: it fits my hands wonderfully. It's size becomes an advantage, in actual use, as it's NOT tiny, and thus feels comfortable and easy to hold. PLUS -The optics and overall performance are better than I'd hoped for. BIG field of vision, yet excellent magnification. The lenses are clear and sharp - quite sufficient for the intended uses. The magnification is obviously a tradeoff: the more you have the harder the monocular is to hold steady. Solution: Get used to bracing yourself against something, or use a small tripod. If you really need to see something far away (several miles), say to make a decision about your route across or through a geographic obstacle, you WANT the magnification. I find that squatting, with my elbows on my knees, provides an always-available tripod of quite sufficient adequacy. Problem solved! The screw-in strap is just fine, and I LOVE that it's possible to mount it like a camera on a tripod, as I have several small, light-weight tripods I use when traveling light, and this idea just works. It is quite possible to get good performance without taking my glasses off, however, the stunning field of view one gets without glasses makes taking them off definitely the way to go, if there's time. This is clearly the monocular I've dreamed of. I don't mind the weight or size, because its performance "pays the freight" and then some. I'm totally pleased with this purchase, and delighted now to have this in my tool kit.

I bought a 170 dollar Minox 8x and sent it back. You can read my review of that monocular too. I bought this and find it vastly superior in terms of clarity, light capture, and image quality. It works very well in low light, has great eye relief, and although not a crystal clear image, it is very, very, good. The only thing is it is on the big side. It is really half of a comparable 10x binocular. It is about 2 inches longer, a bit fatter, and several ounces heavier than the Minox 8x that I got it to replace, but at less than half the price, I can live with it. I also have to keep in mind that it is 10x not 8x. Over all, for most purposes, this is a brilliant product.I recommend it to anyone who wants real magnification and clarity of image. I have only had it a day so can't speak to durability. My only complaint is the way the neck strap attaches. It screws into the tripod socket, which is stupid. Absent some unforeseen failure in the mechanism, I expect to be very happy with this product for some time. I will post updates after I use it for a while, but at this price, it is well worth it. I would recommend to a friend and I would buy it again.

I bought this because I have very low vision and I need a mono-scope to see everything from my toes, menus at fast food restaurants to street lights. What I really like abut the mono-scope is how easy it is to find things through the viewfinder. The image is also large and very clear with no obvious distortion around the edges. My biggest complaint is the size. It does not fit into most pockets of skirts or pants. It is quite large both in diameter and length. It does have a neck strap, but its size makes it uncomfortable to have it just hang on you neck if you are shopping or riding a bike. It takes up almost half my purse. It is taller than a plastic juice glass and wider than my wrist (and I am not skinny). Now to end on a positive note. You can focus it at a certain distance and it will stay focused at that distance. So if you are watching a play you only have to focus it once for the whole play. This helps if you want or need to look at something quickly.

I was in the market for an inexpensive monocular for animal behavior observations. Something that was portable, durable, waterproof, and uncomplicated. Having had a lot of experience with optics fron Orion, including owning a telescope of theirs that I just love (the XT12 Intelliscope Dobsonian, modded with Televue lenses, Starlight Instruments focuser, and ScopeBuggy). I saw the new 10x42 monocular and it seemed to be just what I was looking for. This little thing is just great. It comes with with a little neck cord that cleverly screws into the base where a tripod or monopod would go, and it has a carrying case. The optics are Orion-quality -- sharp and bright -- with magnification that provides resolution but not at the expense of clarity. For the price, the features of the Orion monocular far exceed what it costs. Orion, again, delivers on its promise. Thanks to them for producing such a fine product.

Since I do wildlife photography, I needed something that was sharp, easy to use and have decent magnification (10x) as well as good light-gathering power in shaded tree canopies (42mm objective vs 25mm for my binoculars). When out doing my photography, I often have the pair of binoculars around my neck as well as my camera case strap. Given time, that can get to you after awhile. This monocular is a good compromise in that its less weight and it has a larger objective than my other 10x binocular. Having it rubber armored is another plus making it more rugged than my binoculars. Binoculars can get their share of abuse and (depending on the quality of the prism mounting) can go out of alignment. With the Orion 10x42 monocular, I won't have to worry about that problem. It a good quality product for a pretty decent price. Since getting it, I've enjoyed using it whenever I'm out doing my passion/hobby.

I am reviewing a re-send. The first item did not focus properly (never could get an image), and eventually I could not turn the focus ring since it froze. I complained, and Amazon sent a replacement which matches perfectly what I wanted from a monocular. Nice clear distant images. With the weight restrictions on baggage I needed to change my practice of bringing two binoculars on our flights to distant places for my wife and me, and decided I could make do with a monocular since I wear glasses and trying to focus two lenses proved difficult. So a little less weight and the same 10x magnification and a less cumbersome carry-around.Am very satisfied with the product now and with Amazon's response to my complaint.

These work great for me. I keep these stuffed in my pack, but I don't use them enough to justify both halves of a set of binocs.Positive features that I like: Huge eye reliefWatch out for: the "case" that these come with is not worth keeping. You will want to replace it.These can be shaky one handed while standing. Getting a clear stable image (for me) requires sitting down, using both hands, or using a tree or post for support. The objective lens is pretty big, but these are still useless in the early morning or late evening.

Everything is as described in the product details. It was shipped promptly and everything was in perfect condition when it arrived. I took it along as spare field-glasses on our African Safari, and it worked very well. It's very convenient due to it's size and comes very handy for quick spotting and viewing. But personally, I think it cannot replace a binocular just because of field of vision is much greater in a binoculars than a monocular (obviously!). Otherwise, it's a great product!

Since I don't have binocular vision I didn't see any point in buying both halves of the binocular. Surprisingly it was very hard to find a monocular of this quality. It's light and easy to fit in my pocket or hang around my neck. My one complaint is that the eyeglasses compensation adjustment isn't quite strong enough for my very bad vision so I can only just barely get the birds in focus with glasses off and no way you can see anything with glasses on.

This is very nice, but, it is only 10x and I find I need variable power. It is clear all around, no blue fringe, lightweight, and handy for travel, good eye relief, but not right for me. The focus is easy and done in two stages: first twist the barrel, then the focus knob near the eyepiece. I do recommend this if you only desire a fixed power, as it is high quality. I would not buy again as it is not what I really want, and I hope this helps someone.

Being disabled, I enjoy watching birds. I have two feeders I can see through my window, and i enjoy watching them in our backyard. The monocular helps me to identify them. For example, we have a number of warblers that look similar. With my lens I can almost see bits of dust on one's back. These are serious lens! They are bigger than they look in the pics on Amazon, but were exactly what I was hoping for.

Very good optics. For it's size this scope is very heavy--a big negative to us L/W Hikers. Orion needs to consider another model to fill this niche.Suggestions:* 8x42 or 7x42 would be better (better night viewing and easier to hold)*Reduce the weight--the heavy W/P armor is not needed. This scope should weigh about 6 oz. not 11.Overall a pretty good scope but it's heavy weight will limit its use.

This is an excellent scope! The eyepeice rotates out so you can press your eye to it without hitting the lens, even eyelashes. This eliminates the "black half moon you cant see through" effect entirely. Super bright, excellent near and far focus. Pay attention to the 10x42 so you know what the rating means and you will be thrilled if this is what you need. Orion's customer service is also 5 stars.

Recently, I went Elk hunting and used the monocular many times. The viewing area is very wide and clear making it easy to locate game and other objects. It worked well in low light during my evening hunts. It is very comfortable and easy to use and carry. I do not know if it is truly waterproof as I have not used it in wet conditions. I am very satisfied with my purchase and recommend it highly.
