You can treat this as a long-term review as mine are well out of guarantee by now, but I'll come to that later. These are compact roof prism binoculars - this is important because unlike the binoculars your dad had, these have a lot of optical power in a small package, this means a lot of good quality glass, which in turn means that they are not light, but don't panic. Heavy is good. Mine have been used by children, hamfisted teenagers and clumsy pre-teens, as well as tired, distracted adults. On many occasions they have hit the deck with the sort of expensive noise that means you are going shopping soon, so I am delighted to say that my 8x50 binos are still working. Are they waterproof? Yes.Very much so. As tested by my son.So I was teaching one rainy Saturday and my binos were being passed up and down the line to spot how well our archers were doing, when they met with an accident. Landing on the eyepiece on a concrete floor from about two feet up. I had become cocky at the ability of these glasses to soak up punishment, so was disappointed to find that it was the straw that broke this particular camel's back. Well maybe no back, maybe toe. They still worked optically, but the eyecu was not happy. I had sheared two of the screws that hold the adjustable eyecups on. So I halfheartedly asked Opticron if they'd sell me some replacement screws as the binocular's guarantee expiry was a distant memory. Without hesitation they sent me several replacements free of charge. My binos may yet enjoy a long and happy, if slightly dinged, existence going forward. So 10/10 for robustness (these aren't advertised as armoured remember), 10/10 for clarity, ease of use? 10/10. Customer service (in the UK) - Excellent.Try them; you may be impressed enough to buy a pair (I was).

Before starting, I should probably say that for a far more detailed and expert review than I could ever give, of both these and many other binoculars, you would do well to go to bestbinocularreviews.com ([...]). That is what led me to buy these in the first place (I have no connection to the site, by the way). I hope I'm allowed to put this link on an Amazon review - if not, I guess I'll soon find out.Anyway, for way of comparison, I purchased these together with the far more expensive Vanguard Endeavour 8x42 binoculars. And the image with the Endeavour was somewhat superior, or at least brighter, as would be expected at 8x42. However, to my surprise, in all other ways, the Discovery has them beat.Firstly, they are far lighter. Which might not make a difference for the first few minutes, but after half an hour or so using the Endeavour, my arms were aching, whereas I can use the Discovery for hours without noticing. Secondly - and I know this is always subjective - I find the Discovery to be far more comfortable. Somehow they just sit better on the eyes and in the hand.I was a little concerned that the diopter adjuster ring was not lockable. However, it does have a ratchet system, and so far it has not moved, or shown any inclination to do so.What else...Ah, the case is cheap and not that well padded, but does the job, and in fact the binoculars are so light that I tend to just carry them in my pocket. Finally, I should admit that I am no birdwatching expert. But for my strictly amateur birdwatching purposes - and indeed squirrel-watching, hare-watching and deer-watching - they are everything I hoped for.

My husband's review:I love these binoculars, purchased a year ago. The optical quality, andbrightness is excellent, and what I particularly wanted was a pair ofgeneral purpose binoculars, light and small enough to carry with me mostof the time, but that also gave me close focussing for the world ofinsects, birds, butterflies, damsels and dragons, and this they do verywell. I'm over 6 feet tall, and can focus on small objects, flora orfauna at my feet. The close focus capability greatly increases the usesfor these binoculars, opening up a whole new macro world. They lose a star though for a couple of faults that ought to beavoidable. Setting the distance between the eyepieces is easy andsmooth, but they are too loose and/or well lubricated to stay set, andwill flop under the weight of the optics necessitating constantreadjustment. No other pair I have owned has ever done this. The least forgiveable fault I found early on was the habit of the strapto slip undone and dump the binoculars on the ground. How many milleniaago did our species perfect the technology of the strap and buckleexactly? Fortunately this was easily remedied by sewing up the straps, but really should not have been necessary, quite literally letting thebinoculars down, potentially to their detriment.I hope Opticron will take the trouble to remedy these rather unnecessary, seemingly careless shortcomings which do not detract so much from myenjoyment of their use that I would fail to recommend them.

I bought my pair of 10 x 50 Opticrons when the price was £209 delivered. The price is currently £175. At this lower price you would be mad to miss buying them for the quality you get. I comparred them too my other bino's, a Celestron 8 x 42 Granite model, which has ED glass fitted. I cannot tell any difference in quality between them, even though the Celestron's are currently about £450 a pair.I also comparred them against a pair of Opticron 8 x 42 (same style) and the only difference between them is the width of viewing angle, which is slightly smaller on the 10 x 50 model. Indeed, if you were thinking of getting the Celestron ED glasses, I would seriously suggest you think of these Opticrons instead.Same quality overall, but much cheaper. Their also brilliant at bird spotting, as they are light enough to hold steady and focus down to the same distance as the 8 x 42 version. The viewing angle of the Opticron 10 x 50 is 6.5 degrees, with the Celestron Granite 8 x 42 being 8.1 degrees. I wouldn't go lower than 6.5 degrees viewing angle if at all possible, no matter the make, as below this angle you start to get a "looking down a smarty tube" effect. This is what you get with cheap bino's I found. The Opticon 8 x 42 model has an angle of 7.5 degrees, which is excellent viewing for the power.I very highly recommend these opticron 10 x 50 bino's if you want quality glasses at a good price.

I bought these binoculars for bird and wildlife watching. My first thought was to get higher spec 8x42 binoculars to produce high quality bright images and have a robust magnesium alloy body. However I realised that the weight and size of the higher spec binoculars would have meant that you would be less likely to take them out and use them. These binoculars have a ‘plastic’ casing making them about a half to one third lighter than my initial choices. Despite this the casing feels very robust - time will tell if I’m right. The smaller objective lenses allow a more a more compact binocular and these are one of the most compact 8x32 binoculars. In theory this allows less light in and so less bright image.I have been testing the binoculars today, on a dull late autumn day. I have to say I am very happy to say these binoculars, produce a nice bright clear image, with no discernible defects like fringing.Pros:Compact and light, very portable.Good bright high quality image.Feel like quality construction.Easy and firm focusing and diopter adjustment.Easy to adjust to use with glasses.Anti fog, with sealed in Nitrogen.Wide field of view.Good value.ConsNot really any.I would have liked higher spec optics, but for most uses I don’t think it will make a diffence. In summary I have very portable binoculars with little or no compromise in Image. I’m very pleased.

Bought the Opticron Discovery WP PC 8x32 for my girlfriend to enjoy wildlife watching with me. What a fantastic pair of binoculars. They are small and unobtrusive and sit very well in the hand. They are half the weight of your average binocular, so are very easy to hold steady when using and not weighty or prone to giving you neck ache when sat around your neck for long periods of time. The focus wheel is smooth and seemless and the eyecups are well designed, able to rotate in or out depending on whether you're a glasses wearer, and staying in position. Optically, they are excellent, unbeatable at the sub £150 price range, and I've used considerably more expensive pairs too that are no better optically than these.Overall then,at around £150, unbeatable value for money, super to use because small and lightweight, optically excellent. Why get sucked in, like so many people these days, of spending over £1500 pounds for the top makes (Swaro, Leica, Zeiss), just for trend and status? If you don't need these very top ranges, and there are many out there with them that don't!, then for a tenth of the cost, make this model top of your list for consideration, you won't be disappointed. I have long wanted to own a pair of Opticron binoculars ever since I used to work in photographic retail more than twelve years ago. I was fortunate at that time to be able to compare multiple brands and models of binoculars side by side. I have used Bushnell, Leica, Bausch & Lomb, Pentax, Olympus, Canon, and Opticron. All I can say was that I became a huge fan of Opticron binoculars and here's why: for their price point the optics are absolutely outstanding, a tenth the price of Leica but I would say 95% of the quality. None of the other brands offer the same value for money or come near to the sharpness and brightness of Opticron. The exit pupil size on Opticron binoculars are very large, this is often overlooked when people consider buying binos. However the larger the exit pupil diameter the more light that is entering your eyes and brighter the image. Also it makes for a more comfortable viewing experience. So long story short, I have finally bought this pair and as expected outstanding optics, nice size, fit well in the hands, rubberised, waterproof, large focus knob, and can be mounted (with the appropriate adapter) to a tripod.

I've had a pair for just over two years now. The optics are good but for me the size and weight are winners. They tuck away under my shoulder and I can forget I have them with me - these are the only 8x32 binoculars I've found small enough and light enough to do that with comfortably. I even wear them back-packing. They focus close for butterflies, which is another of my interests. The customer service is excellent. The warranty is two years spares and repairs, then three years repairs. Just before the two years were up one of the eye-pieces broke off (the plastic thread snapped through) in my hand - no rough treatment. You might take this as poor construction, but these things are really light,so the pay-off is plastic body and threads. I would have knocked a star off except for what happened next: I noticed on the warranty that accidental damage was labour-only. As the shop assistant clearly didn't believe they'd broken in my hand ("They must have had a hell of a bang, mate") I was expecting to be asked to pay for parts. Not a bit of it - they came straight back fixed - no haggling.

You will struggle to find a more compact pair of 10x42 of roof prism binoculars than these. The have a crisp bright image and have a wide eye relief so are particularly suitable for people who want to use them when wearing eye glasses. The 8x magnification ones are even better for this. They are also waterproof hence the WP moniker. Its not widely appreciated that Opticron are a small UK company that get their binoculars made to a high standard overseas, but because they are UK based they have good customer service if you have a problem. Being an optics freak and a daily user I have about 10 pairs of binoculars right up to a pair that were a couple of thousand pounds, but all of my budget and mid range sets are Opticron. In the past few years I have damaged two pairs and they were both quickly and economically repaired at the Opticron service centre at Luton. I really recommend the Discovery in particular as they are my favourite 'grab and go' set as they do most things very well..

This purchase was inspired by both my love of birdwatching and the goid reviews of it on the Ray Mears website. These have surpassed my expectations for the price point. They cost just under 150 pounds which though not cheapest was at lower mid range price. They come with strap and case and cleaning cloth. They end caps at one end have a special wiggly bit of plastic to keep them together meaning you can replace them at any distance set on the binoculars and no need to readjust width in order to do so which saves a lot of time. The other ends caps are independent and remain attached so not lost. The weight is about half a kilo and they are light and small which means they are perfect for longexpeditions and for travel packing. The views are sharp and almost 3D the clarity is seen for not just the area of interest, and it surpassed my expectations and pleased me greatly as means these will be used extensively for all these reasons.

I bought these for my daughter as I already had a pair that I use daily. I did a reasonable amount of research as I was looking for a pair of small, light, high performance binoculars at a reasonable price - presently I don't think that there is a better model on the market that combines those criteria in a single package. They deliver a clear, crisp image, are relatively robust and fit into a coat pocket or the side pocket of a car so that you can always have them to hand. If you are travelling they take up very little space and are good enough to allow for serious bird or other wildlife watching. They are very light so there is very little 'shake' and the close focus (just over 1m)makes them ideal for identifying butterflies, dragonflies or other invertebrates if you can get that close to them (and saves you having to bend over too far if you have bad back!). Overall a terrific and highly affordable piece of kit.

Just got a pair of these delivered. Look good and sturdy and not too heavy. Compared them to a £600 pair of Leicas and to be honest these are just as good with lovely bright crisp optics and generally good build. If I was to moan about anything (which I don't want to) it is that the right hand twist out eyepiece is meant to stop at a half way out point (as well as fully out). This halfway point is not as positive a "click" as it is on the left side. Anyway this is very minor and slight. Perhaps the extra hundreds for leicas etc goes into build quality etc but optically these are just as good. They came with strap, case etc and will focus onto your foot so are good for insects etc as well as birding. All in all I would highly recommend them to anyone who has always dreamt of owning a pair of excellent bins but who could never quite bring themselves to shell out many hundreds of pounds!

I haven't given them 5 for a few short comings. What you actually see through them is great, I love the 10 magnification and the general quality and solidity is great. What I don't like is the small name covering on the spindle fell off (just glued on) within a week of buying, and it fell off why I was outside so never seen again. I now have to look at the screws. No major just looks a bit cheap. Also very unhappy with the covers for front lenses. I'm not sure they could be any poorer. I did end up buying rubber stay on covers from Opticron soon I saw them. Just a bit cheap not including them really, these aren't bargain basement bins. Don't necessarily expect stay on covers, but what comes supplied are hard to describe. They are the sort of covers you'd expect on £30 bins. Just a bit of a shame down these little things take the shine off an otherwise great product.

I wanted a decent lightweight pair of binoculars to take on longer walks, and these fit the bill perfectly. They really are light. You can hang them round your neck for hours without any discomfort.Despite their plastic build, they are waterproof and they feel solid in the hand. They have a bright image and the focus wheel is smooth. The twist-up eye-cups are, perhaps, a little loose with the result that they sometimes move from the chosen position, but that is easily remedied. I also ditched the rainguard as I found it rather a tight fight and of poor quality. But overall, I would thoroughly recommend these binoculars for anyone wanting a lightweight pair without going to the ultra-small compactsrange.

I bought these as both a back up to my main 'birding bins' (to keep in the glovebox of my car) and as a lightweight alternative when out photographing Butterflies. (The close focus abilities means they are perfect for this). In general use they stand up well to my larger, ED bins. Contrast is good, colour seems accurate and chromatic aberration, while present is at a minimum and only really noticeable in extreme contrast situations. If your hands are on the larger side you may have difficulty handling these bins as they are very small. But, their diminutive size is also a plus point in many situations. If you want a 'proper' pair of bins but don't want to be weighed down get these.
