You can treat this as a long-term review as mine are well out of guarantee by now, but I'll come to that later. These are compact roof prism binoculars - this is important because unlike the binoculars your dad had, these have a lot of optical power in a small package, this means a lot of good quality glass, which in turn means that they are not light, but don't panic. Heavy is good. Mine have been used by children, hamfisted teenagers and clumsy pre-teens, as well as tired, distracted adults. On many occasions they have hit the deck with the sort of expensive noise that means you are going shopping soon, so I am delighted to say that my 8x50 binos are still working. Are they waterproof? Yes.Very much so. As tested by my son.So I was teaching one rainy Saturday and my binos were being passed up and down the line to spot how well our archers were doing, when they met with an accident. Landing on the eyepiece on a concrete floor from about two feet up. I had become cocky at the ability of these glasses to soak up punishment, so was disappointed to find that it was the straw that broke this particular camel's back. Well maybe no back, maybe toe. They still worked optically, but the eyecu was not happy. I had sheared two of the screws that hold the adjustable eyecups on. So I halfheartedly asked Opticron if they'd sell me some replacement screws as the binocular's guarantee expiry was a distant memory. Without hesitation they sent me several replacements free of charge. My binos may yet enjoy a long and happy, if slightly dinged, existence going forward. So 10/10 for robustness (these aren't advertised as armoured remember), 10/10 for clarity, ease of use? 10/10. Customer service (in the UK) - Excellent.Try them; you may be impressed enough to buy a pair (I was).

Before starting, I should probably say that for a far more detailed and expert review than I could ever give, of both these and many other binoculars, you would do well to go to bestbinocularreviews.com ([...]). That is what led me to buy these in the first place (I have no connection to the site, by the way). I hope I'm allowed to put this link on an Amazon review - if not, I guess I'll soon find out.Anyway, for way of comparison, I purchased these together with the far more expensive Vanguard Endeavour 8x42 binoculars. And the image with the Endeavour was somewhat superior, or at least brighter, as would be expected at 8x42. However, to my surprise, in all other ways, the Discovery has them beat.Firstly, they are far lighter. Which might not make a difference for the first few minutes, but after half an hour or so using the Endeavour, my arms were aching, whereas I can use the Discovery for hours without noticing. Secondly - and I know this is always subjective - I find the Discovery to be far more comfortable. Somehow they just sit better on the eyes and in the hand.I was a little concerned that the diopter adjuster ring was not lockable. However, it does have a ratchet system, and so far it has not moved, or shown any inclination to do so.What else...Ah, the case is cheap and not that well padded, but does the job, and in fact the binoculars are so light that I tend to just carry them in my pocket. Finally, I should admit that I am no birdwatching expert. But for my strictly amateur birdwatching purposes - and indeed squirrel-watching, hare-watching and deer-watching - they are everything I hoped for.

I've had a pair for just over two years now. The optics are good but for me the size and weight are winners. They tuck away under my shoulder and I can forget I have them with me - these are the only 8x32 binoculars I've found small enough and light enough to do that with comfortably. I even wear them back-packing. They focus close for butterflies, which is another of my interests. The customer service is excellent. The warranty is two years spares and repairs, then three years repairs. Just before the two years were up one of the eye-pieces broke off (the plastic thread snapped through) in my hand - no rough treatment. You might take this as poor construction, but these things are really light,so the pay-off is plastic body and threads. I would have knocked a star off except for what happened next: I noticed on the warranty that accidental damage was labour-only. As the shop assistant clearly didn't believe they'd broken in my hand ("They must have had a hell of a bang, mate") I was expecting to be asked to pay for parts. Not a bit of it - they came straight back fixed - no haggling.

I bought these for my daughter as I already had a pair that I use daily. I did a reasonable amount of research as I was looking for a pair of small, light, high performance binoculars at a reasonable price - presently I don't think that there is a better model on the market that combines those criteria in a single package. They deliver a clear, crisp image, are relatively robust and fit into a coat pocket or the side pocket of a car so that you can always have them to hand. If you are travelling they take up very little space and are good enough to allow for serious bird or other wildlife watching. They are very light so there is very little 'shake' and the close focus (just over 1m)makes them ideal for identifying butterflies, dragonflies or other invertebrates if you can get that close to them (and saves you having to bend over too far if you have bad back!). Overall a terrific and highly affordable piece of kit.

Just got a pair of these delivered. Look good and sturdy and not too heavy. Compared them to a £600 pair of Leicas and to be honest these are just as good with lovely bright crisp optics and generally good build. If I was to moan about anything (which I don't want to) it is that the right hand twist out eyepiece is meant to stop at a half way out point (as well as fully out). This halfway point is not as positive a "click" as it is on the left side. Anyway this is very minor and slight. Perhaps the extra hundreds for leicas etc goes into build quality etc but optically these are just as good. They came with strap, case etc and will focus onto your foot so are good for insects etc as well as birding. All in all I would highly recommend them to anyone who has always dreamt of owning a pair of excellent bins but who could never quite bring themselves to shell out many hundreds of pounds!

I haven't given them 5 for a few short comings. What you actually see through them is great, I love the 10 magnification and the general quality and solidity is great. What I don't like is the small name covering on the spindle fell off (just glued on) within a week of buying, and it fell off why I was outside so never seen again. I now have to look at the screws. No major just looks a bit cheap. Also very unhappy with the covers for front lenses. I'm not sure they could be any poorer. I did end up buying rubber stay on covers from Opticron soon I saw them. Just a bit cheap not including them really, these aren't bargain basement bins. Don't necessarily expect stay on covers, but what comes supplied are hard to describe. They are the sort of covers you'd expect on £30 bins. Just a bit of a shame down these little things take the shine off an otherwise great product.

Used for birdwatching. I wear spectacles. Have several other pairs of Opticron binos, with a higher magnification, but wanted a pair that was slightly lighter, and had better field of view, and better light gathering ability. These are excellent in that respect. They are better than my 12x50s for speed of being able to pick up a bird in flight, and finding birds in dense vegetation etc. The higher magnification ones are better for waders at a distance of course, but I would highly recommend these for 90% of birdwatching tasks. Usual high build quality. Eye adjuster a little stiff, but as rarely change it this is not a problem (and you don't want it too loose).

I spent many hours reading reviews and forums when getting some new bins as my existing ones 10x42 were too heavy for field work.I finally decided on the Opticron 8x42 Discovery, but due to sticky fingers and stupidity I ordered 8x32 by mistake.I realised this when I opened the box, but I gave them a try anyway and was I pleased!! they were brilliant, light, bright and sharp so much so that I decided to keep them. After a few trips out I am just as pleased. The 8x42 may have given a slightly wider field of view, but the 8x32 focused closer. At this price they are exceptional.

These are sturdy bins with excellent picture quality. They are the first pair I have purchased (in early 2017) since losing my trusty old pair of 8 x 30 traditional porro prisms made by a company called Hunter that I had owned since being a kid. Therefore, I am unaccustomed to using modern bins & their technicalities. I find it easy to adjust magnification & focus with them. Negatives (which would result in the subtraction of 1/2 a star if I knew how): they are slightly heavy & the case is a bit rubbish (thin rubberised PVC type material).

The binoculars arrived very promptly and were exactly what I wanted as I'd previously looked at several different types in local shops. This Opticron produces excellent image quality when compared to other models. Cheaper models were clearly inferior, particularly those at £60 or less. More expensive models may have been better but any differences in image quality were impossible for me to detect. Of course time will tell if the claims for water resistance and anti-fogging are true, but so far I'm very pleased with what I bought.

I bought these to replace my old pair of Nikkons which had succumbed to being repeatedly dropped in last winter's snow. I haven't regretted buying these - they're easy to carry around and have now survived their fair share of knocks, bumps and rain. They may not be optically the most high-tech, but they are perfectly adequate, making them the ideal bins to complement a scope, or take on a stroll. They also focus extremely close, so are ideal for butterflies and dragonflies. All in all a good binocular bargain.

12.9.2016

My previous binocs were 10 x42, and took the advice that 8x42 produce a steadier image with a wider more usable view, and a bit more brightness to the image is just noticable, and this is certainly the case, all round a much easier viewing experience. Also these are really well suited when used wearing my specs. This Opticron model has good reviews, is neat, solid, and looks well made, but can't comment on image quality as have nothing of same spec to compare them with, but look fine to me.

19.1.2014

I purchased these binoculars after reading a great number of reviews and they have proved to be a very good buy. They are very comfortable to use, adjustment is extremely smooth and they give a nice bright image which, together with the 8x42 size, makes them perfect for bird watching. They are waterproof, which I also feel is essential, and, as a bonus, they are also light enough to carry around all day. I am so pleased with mine that my husband has purchased another pair for himself.

First set of decent binoculars I've had so nothing really to compare to but very happy with the performance. I mainly use for butterfly and bird watching. They have a short focus distance which allows great viewing of butterflies without disturbing them. For watching birds the 8x mag is a good compromise. Personally I don't think I could hold a 10x mag steady enough. Also pleased I went for the 8x32 and not 8x42 from a weight/size point of view. The light levels/image are excellent.

I may have got a poor example, but the focusing wheel was a bit sticky, the left field was blurry and the near focus (within 3m) was not really binocular vision. Otherwise quite good for around a hundred. I paid £149 tho, which would have been worth it if it was the same binocular as reviewed by BBR. They are very compact and not too heavy at all for this type. I have a bit of a shake so I still had to steady myself tho.
