Moleskine Hard Red for Art would be a decent sketchbook for those who want something that could easily fit into a satchel and has surface that is smoother and more rigid than stereotypical sketchbook paper. It is also pretty cute. If you are looking for something larger than pocket-sized but not as large as a letter-sized notebook, and willing to pay some extra bucks for quality, try this one. Some notes:1. Paper thickness: Somewhere in between that of stereotypical sketchbook and Bristol board.\2. Paper texture: Pretty smooth.3. Color of the surface: Although not well shown in photos, it is actually faint green tea. If you want a surface that is white, then this may not be it.4.Using fountain pen: The photo that I have uploaded contains two pages using fountain pen. Because of the paper's thickness, doodles and writings from the previous page does not bleed through. Also, because the surface is pretty smooth, it provides an excellent surface for fountain pen.5. Other instruments/media I plan on testing in the future: Dipping pen and brushes with India ink, colored markers and pencils, watercolor and acrylic paints.******Update: 04/18/20121. The faint green tea color of the sketchbook surface ... watch out: Be very careful with eraser. Rubbing the surface will fade out the color and reveal a white surface. So, if you expect to use eraser on a regular basis, look for a different sketchbook.2. Applying acrylic ink and painting: The sketchbook page being worked on will warp, if acrylic ink and painting are used liberally. (Extrapolation based on my experience with acrylics: The same problem will be encountered by applying watercolor.) This is not a big deal, if you are using this sketchbook to experiment and to play around. However, if you want to do polished works using acrylics, look for something heavier.

OK once you get over the sticker shock, it's uphill from there. Yes, $17 for a bundle of paper with a hard cover. Most NY Times best sellers (hard bound bundles of paper with words on them) cost less. That's just me being real. There are so many people who can't spend $17 on a wordless notebook, I have to state the obvious. And Moleskines are not alone in the price target, so it's nothing against them, I'm just stating the factsOnce you get beyond the price, Moleskines will prove themselves to you as some of the best made and useful notebooks around. And they are made for "you", not you having to remake your approach for them. Do you draw, they have one with blank pages. Do you write, they have them with ruled pages, do you like flip pads, they flip, do you like pocket sizes, they have those, and if you like them bigger or even bigger, they have those two. If you like orange, purple, or lavender color wise, I haven't seen those, but then again...you might just want to ask.OK, this is a lot for just a wordless hard bound (and yes, they come in soft bound as well) notebook, but I love the old fashion mechanical pencils and paper to go along with my multitude of digital gadgets. That's just how I roll and Moleskins help make that possible. And if you don't do pen, pencil and paper and are totally digital, then they even have Moleskine covers for iPhones and other devices.Happy writing!

While I have largely left behind the world of paper documents, preferring to read online and use my electronic devices (Galaxy Note II cell phone, MacBook Air and a Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera) for almost anything else, I still find value in imprinting ink on paper on this permanent, no-batteries-required data storage device. With no start up lag and its instant placeholder ribbon marking my last page, I can resume writing almost immediately. While there are different versions of these Moleskine 3.5 x 5.5 notebooks, this one, called a "Sketch Book", has some advantages. Namely, it offers blank pages that are much thicker and heavier making it easier to write on than the thin paper used in itslined notebooks. While this thicker paper comes at the expense of cutting the page count down to 80 pages, it is still worth it. In the thin paged versions, my pen would often break through the paper and its ink would show through to the other side, making both writing and reading more difficult - and even frustrating. Neither are a problem with this blank page heavy weight paper version.Whether you are sketching or writing, I highly recommend this version, both for its thicker paper and for its small size, a size that enables it to fit into my coat's breast pocket or into any cell phone sized pocket space.Sincerely,David Elliott Lewis, San Francisco

Having heard the many the rave reviews for Moleskine notebooks, I thought I would see what all the fuss was about. Initially I was shocked at the price ranges- fairly expensive for a notebook!? Yet, Amazon offers the best price, a BARGAIN compared with other stores/websites!The paper is sooo smooth! I have no qualms about using it with fineliner and brush pens, it's amazing.BUT, the paper has a sort of coating on that means it repels soluble media and if you go over it too many times it bobbles awfully! I've tried it with watercolours, inks, and even pencils don't have the same intensity, almost waxy :(Obviously I know this is a 'sketchbook' so I didn't expect it to be suitable for watercolours, but it would have been nice for multi-purpose use, especially pencils! Perhaps a sharper mechanical pencil would work better? However, it IS sleek, stylish and you do pay for the quality with details I love the little pocket in the back as well as the ribbon page marker.Nonetheless, it is a great little pocket 'sketchbook' that would be perfect for someone that works exclusively in pens and fineliner!

I LOVE THESE SKETCHBOOKS! its nice to have something this durable and high quality that will fit into a pocket or bag. just received my fourth today, I ordered it on the 6th with super saver delivery so not bad for free delivery. the paper in these sketchbooks is quite smooth and thick and slightly off white. the cover is hard and durable, and the elastic doesn't go long and stretchy like some might. these books are perfect for the little drawings, doodles and notes I take whenever inspiration strikes. they are a high enough quality to keep as something nice afterward as well. perfect for a travel journal if that's how you roll, but mine never seem to get left until the actual holiday..a word of advice, check whatever pens etc. you will be using in it on the back page first because some might go through the paper a little. but that happens with most sketchbooks anyway. well worth the extra cash for something so satisfying to use and high quality. the pocket in the back is useful to collect tickets, scraps etc.

I bought this product after I was pleased with the larger "Moleskine Sketchbook Large". It's size is perfect for keeping in your front or back pocket, while being big enough to allow for two or three small doodles per page.My favorite feature about this book is that every two pages are nearly seamlessly connected. This allows me to sketch full landscapes across two pages.I myself use this book to draw landscapes, and use the individual pages for single doodles or sketches. I also favor the strap, which just looks cool, and helps keep it closed. The yellow pages are also a joy, as they give the art it's own artsy flavor that white pages can'.A must buy for anyone who needs a good pocket sized note/sketch book.I also suggest that you get the "Moleskine Sketchbook Large" as a companion. As a final note, I use the product "Pilot VBall Liquid Ink Stick Roller Ball Pen, Micro Point, 0.50 mm, Black Barrel, Black Ink 12-Count (53206)" For my drawings, which works fluidly and never breaks or scratches.

I always expect top quality with Moleskine books, and this one does not disappoint! I normally use a larger book for my art journal, but I decided to get a smaller one going, mainly for portability. This book is the perfect size to fit in my purse or in my travel art supply kit. One thing I really like about this book is that it opens up flat, so you don't have that big gutter in the middle of your book. I like to create two page layouts in my art journal, and this book allows me to do that with much less of a headache. The thickness and texture of the pages is very nice. I did experience some very slight curling of the page when I got a good bit of paint on there, but I hit it up with my heat gun and it laid right back down. When I've needed a bit thicker of a page, I have used gel medium to glue two pages together, and that worked out very well. All in all, this is a great product. I would recommend it to anyone, and I would not hesitate to purchase it again and again.

I have gone through two full sized moleskines already and just adore them. Their smooth, creamy paper is marvellous for pens, pastels, graphite, charcoal, etc. and it lasts forever! They're also extremely hardy little books. I went camping with my field moleskine and sketched by the river. We went hiking, I left it by the river by mistake and ended up going to bed without thinking about it. In the morning, after a massive rainstorm, I became distraught and realised I'd forgotten it by the river. All was not lost, however! The thing was soaked, but the pages inside were still crispy and clean without a single drop on the most important bits. The edges were a bit soggy, but the whole thing came out with spine, binder, pages and most importantly, drawings intact. I highly suggest this if you're doing field studies, life studies, full-sized drawings, etc. as it's got some of the best quality paper ever and has the sturdiest binding I've ever experienced. Fantastic book!

Ive had my Moleskine notebook for about seven months now. Ive used it for sketches, notes from work and the random story ideas that hit me every now and then. Considering I carry it with me in my scrubs (where it frequently bangs into shelves and corners) on a daily basis, its in remarkably good condition, hell it looks practically Iike new. The ink only really bled through the one time I made the serious mistake of coloring in a page wide drawing in black sharpie. Dont do that and you needn't worry about bleed through. It is a tough durable and most importantly, reliable companion. Also people dont have the same negative reaction to a guy pulling out a notebook to write down some notes as theydo to a guy pulling out a cellphone to take those same notes in an app.Which is a massive plus in my book.If you need tough, durable and reliable buy this notebook.

I find this sketchbook perfect. I like to carry around a small sketchbook with a pen to sketch new architectural ideas and concepts as I think of them or see them, as well as write different thoughts into it. This pocket sketchbook was smaller than I expected, but it turned out to be the perfect size for use. Some people say that the paper was too yellow and weren't warned about it. The other pictures I saw online clearly showed a yellow tint, and I personally love it. It gives a different character and feel for the book. It takes ink very well. I've done some calligraphic writing in it, so sometimes the ink needs a few seconds to dry, but it takes it well. The thick pages keep bleeding away,so you don't get annoying lines from ink on your new pages. I think this pocket sketchbook is perfect for anyone that wants to carry it around for everyday use.

Yes, the pages are an archival cream color. It's part of the moleskine charm. These are sturdy, they lay flat on any page (great for scanning and splash pages), have a pocket in the back for storing references or notes, and they have a built in bookmark threaded in the spine. Oh, and they smell like art. This is the best sketchbook I've ever had. I've got a few of them now and years from now I will have shelves of them.I draw every day, filling one or two pages per day. I have gone through 6 sketchbooks in the last year and these are my favorite.A note:Copic and Prismacolor markers will bleed thru. I thought they wouldn't because of how thick the pages are, but they do.A really good marker for moleskines are tombow dual brush pens. They build darkness well, are water based and don't bleed if you don't oversaturate the page.

It really is! If your like me and inspiration whacks you between the eyes at the most awkward times - like when your walking down the street or sitting on the train - then having this in your pocket is really handy. I really appreciate the quality moleskine have consistently applied to their whole range, and this pocket sketchbook in particular screams that. The pages are thick enough that marks don't show through on the other side, they can be opened flat which allows you to draw wider landscape style drawings and you never have the fear that the book will come apart for it, it's very 'solid'. Overall you pay a little extra for luxury, and this is exactly what it feels like when using one of these books. My only wish is that they made A4 size and above versions in their range of sketchbooks, but you can't have it all!

Acid free, heavy-enough paper. Robust binding. Perfection like any other Moleskine. So why not 5 stars???==>> I was hoping for a more pure, saturated red color. But alas, this is no lipstick or Ferrari red. The red in the photographs looks better.Having almost-red ones still make it easy to pick certain special books out of my shelf of black ones. They also make good Valentines, if you don't mind your red Valentine being a little off chromatically. That's why I bought these and others this February, and why I noticed the color. If this were the black version, it would receive 5 stars. I knocked off one star so prospects would know to expect slightly less than color perfection for a Valentine.I would have only removed 1/2 of a star, if it were possible.

Amazing little book. This is my first time owning a Moleskine and I have to say that I'm in love. The pages are thick and smooth, they hold up to ink very well, with no bleeding through to the other side. I haven't tried paint on the pages yet, but I've seen others do it and they were amazed as well at how well the pages held up. The little pop out pocket in the back is very useful for small pieces of paper and the paper ruler they give you actually comes in handy for a few things. The strap that keeps the book closed when not in use is also a very helpful addition. This is a durable little book. All in all this product is amazing and I'd recommend Moleskine notebooks to everyone, especially artists out there looking for a good companion <3
