I've been working with XP Home on a friend's PC and it is pretty impressive. Personally I quickly switched the Control Panel back to the classic view, but for the average home user I can see the new layout being useful. The bundled features are excellent, especially WMP8. The performance is also outstanding - bootup is unbelievably quick on a Celeron 800.For anyone using Win9x/ME this is an essential upgrade; anybody who prefers ME to an NT-based Windows must be completely demented. That said, my mate who bought the Home edition has just returned it and ordered XP Pro, as our local network is based on a W2K domain and XP Home cannot log on to domains.Microsoft told me that this is so home users can get XP without paying for expensive domain capabilities; however, most of the clients on my network are running W98 or W98SE, so if they have the facility to log on to a domain then I don't see why XP Home shouldn't.For those running W2K I'm not so sure that upgrading is worthwhile. Personally I find that all my relatively new games (i.e. just about any W95 games) run just fine on W2K Server, although I do have a W98SE machine for the DOS antiques I can't bear to part with. I'd have to think hard before upgrading a W2K Professional machine to XP, but if you have a lot of software that isn't W2K compatible it's probably worth it. Certainly it's better than anything that came before; I don't know if it's £164 better than W2K, but it beats 98SE and is streets ahead of the dreadful ME.I didn't see any compatibility problems during XP installation. If you really want to see some, try Linux.

I grabbed the upgrade version of this, which doesn't mean you have to install it over your old system, i formatted all my drives and started from blank. Soon into the installation it asks to see a previous version of Windows, so I popped Win98 into my drive, pressed ok, and it asks for the XP disk again. Great that was the first bit out of the way. The installation was no problem, however a little slow. Once in the desktop however, I noticed XPs new clean look. I installed motherboard and graphics card drivers without a hitch. Next, I attemped to connect to the internet, which it did first time (well second, i hadnt plugged in the cable!!!) It was using generic drivers for the modem, and is connecting at 45k, so when the WinXP drivers are released for my modem, I would like to see an increase. Much has been said about the software registration thingy, i cant actually remeber what its called! it took less than 2 minutes over the internet, which i was pleasantly surprised about!! I can play CM0102 (many people can't???), and my other apps work fine. Now to tell you about my problems. Well, as yet there aren't any, which is strange because with win98 i was restarting every 45 mins. I am so far absolutely delighted with this product, however, I did do my checking beforehand, and had XP drivers ready for all my hardware. So i image you must carefully check all your hardware for compatability to this system, mine is all new. Enuff sed, all in all thumbs up!!!

As far as the operating system itself goes, it is superb, I am giving it 4* rather than 5 for the simple reason that I felt a little bit conned by Windows ME which has lasted precisely a year and wasn't a huge difference to 98, so 3 operating systems in as many years is a bit too many.On to Windows XP, well it took a while for a driver for my Brother Laser printer to come out but now it has everything is working perfectly. XP boots up so quickly, and the easy way you can have different users with their own settings and easy switching between users is fantastic. If you have one PC and more than one user this is like having any number of PCs in one. I can be using Word or something, and my wife can come along, switch users and access her email and I can come back and everything on my desktop is just as I left it.Really this is a top product if all your hardware is compatible, which it should be by now, most companies will have pulled their finger out and released XP drivers. You have to remember that this is based on Windows NT and therefore there are going to be some compromises to be made by home users if they want the stability and increased functionality of this product. In short if you are sure all your hardware is compatible (check manuafacturers web sites first) then go for it!Incidentally if you have a digital camera then XP is a must!

Windows 95 was terrible, Windows 98 was just as bad and then Windows ME much the same as 95 and 98. Finally Microsoft has got it right. No more blue screens of death. Whenever an error occurs it logs the error and sends a copy to microsoft so they can sort out any recurring problems. And you can view these error logs and see what errors have been happening on your PC for the past few months. The system is much more stable, it does not crash or freeze as much. The boot sequence is much quicker and XP detects much more hardware than you would expect. I don't bother with a backup drive on my PC anymore because Windows XP comes with an excellent restore facility. Setting up a network it much easier,it is done with an easy network wizard which itself is sometimes not needed. And another awesome part of the XP Operating system is Remote Assistance which allows another XP user to provide remote assistance to you. So if you run into problems you can get your tech friend to access your PC and watch him while he fixes the problem for you. The only annoying thing I have encountered so far is when installing hardware I get a message saying "Microsoft has not passed this driver to work with Windows XP" useful point but annoying.

Had a PC running Windows ME & after the constant blue screens & the usual barrage of Ctrl+Alt+Del, I decided enough was enough...I upgraded from ME to XP without a problem...it was so easy, helpful & didn't take that long at all...The aftermath, a fantastic pc, it starts so much quicker, software opens quicker, much quicker & it looks good, allowing you to change every icon & have a silver colour scheme (it will never be the fantastic Mac OS X 'Panther' but looks nearly as good). Some advice, allow yourself from half a day to a full day! Back up all your folders, files (work) & make sure you have all CDs to hand...un-install all software, drivers that XP advices might not work & download all XP drivers, updates into a folder! After upgrading to XP, install all the drivers & away you go...My sound card, scanner & printer did not want to work under XP, but I did what I was told & after installing the new drivers...everything worked well...better than before...WELL WORTH THE UPGRADE FEE ;0)

It has finally arrived but is it worth it? I had initially jumped on the band wagon and got it. It is, however, a slight let down compared with the installation process. Doing an upgrade from a windows XX is supposed to be doddle.I had encountered numerous errors along the way but in the end I had to make a complete 'clean' installation. That means I lost all of my email and other bits that I had previously downloaded. I had to do this coz it hung in the middle of installing XP and would not revert back to Windows XX.Since I have done the installation on a clean drive, it runs like a galloping Giselle through the african plains. It looks clean, neat and runs smooth and fast. However convincing this may sound I still need to wait for certain drivers to download to make hardware and software compatible with XP.It is worth it but be aware that the option of upgrading to XP is not recommended until all the bugs are eradicated and downloads are available.

Windows XP in my eyes has to be the most stable operating system I have ever worked with, however, I do agree that at times it can be slow, but if you want a fast operating system I suggest you devolve back to Windows 95.If you want a stable environment to work in then Windows XP should be your choice. There is practically no need for you to back up files because this OS just dosen't crash.I have been using Win XP for 6 months now and I have had no problems with it.Being a Webmaster I usually come across many problems while programming and web designing and ended up losing a lot of important work using ME and 98, but I cannot fault either the Professional XP edition or the home edition. So I would definately recommend you change from which ever OS you are using to XP.10 out of 10 in my point of view.

Having read previous reviews of using the XP upgrade CD we were a little nervous when inserting it into our PC running Windows ME. We already have a new PC (HP) which came with XP pre-installed so wanted both PC's with the same operating system. However, no nerves whatsoever after about 77 minutes (the time is displayed during the upgrade) when the installation was completed without any hitches. All we had to do was one driver update for the DVD drive. This too was easy, as the process even took us to the site needed for the download and all was completed without fuss. Went onto Windows Update and then downloaded the "Critical Updates" and "Service Packs", etc.As far as we are concerned the upgrade is highly recommended.Just get all the latest XP drivers for your hardware first.

Having had XP Home for roughly 12 months I have to say I will never go back to any of it's predecessors. In the time that I have had this Operating system (OS) the PC has only locked up once, and crashed maybe a few times. With Win 98 I was always having to press the reset button, but not with this. XP Home is perfect for the home user and well worth buying. I recommend buying the upgrade if you already own a previous Windows OS, such as 95/98/ME because you only need your old OS's disk to validate the install. The upgrade is cheaper too than the full version. On one final note I had to download quite a few drivers for my digital camera, graphics card etc in order for things to run smoothly,so it's worth downloading all the XP compatible drivers for your hardware.

A must buy. A small problem with RAM, this bugger uses loads of it, I suggest at least 256 Mb. Another small problem (which might be localised to me) is that I had to change my pixel rate to 1024x768, otherwise the screen overlaped the moniter.Really nice look, has loads of nice backgrounds, although finding them is a pain, if you buy this look in C:XP/Web/Wallpaper. Very easy to use and it has never crashed on me, a very stable system. Games seem to load quicker on this as well. Also this thing has a narrator which tells you everything you can see on the screen, a useful option for blind or partially sighted people. I can't think of anything else, but there's loads of useful things on XP.I'd say the price is very good,a must buy!

Well I've read all of the reviews and the greater amount of them pan XP. Why? It seems to me that Microsoft is getting a hard time just for being successful and presumably the reason that it's so pevalent is because the average Joe in the street actually likes the products. Yes, I know that there may be faster ways of doing things and yes I know that XP uses up a huge amount of disc space, but so what? Most newer computers have hard drives that two years ago would have been unknown to the home user, so why not use some of the space up? The XP interface is seriously nice to use - it reminds me of getting into a quality car and hearing the "thunk" of a well machined door closing. XP is luscious, big, bright and wastfull. Brilliant.

Windows XP is a good product - it's fast, easy to use and very stable. However, the upgrade isn't as simple as Microsoft would have you believe. After upgrading my Windows ME system, I found that the existing internet connection kept rejecting (because it was trying to include Domain info) the login, and after I fixed that, it would transmit but not receive. Eventually I re-created the connection with the XP Wizard which worked perfectly. Also, my SoundBlaster card vanished (it was just a case of adding it again with a Wizard)and the PIII processor was flagged yellow in device manager with "drivers not loaded". The fixes were easy but enough to turn a novice into a shivering wreck!

Brilliant reliablility have hardly ever had a crash and certainly never a total system failure like I used to get with Windows 98. Upgrade can be difficult if you forget to download windows XP drivers for your devices before you upgrade. But if you do then it is quite smooth. Attractive new interface that is colourful but not at all childish and instead professional and attractive to the user. But most importantly the performance is great - games will run even faster than ever. Plus a lot of the bugs at the start have been solved by windows update and the first service pack. Buy it today. I would only not recommend it to computers with less than 128MB RAM. Otherwise it'll do well.

I had heard a lot of bad comments about Windows XP so I was a bit hesitant to upgrade to this, however, I decided to go ahead and upgrade my system from the Millenium Edition. I am really glad I did, the graphics are fantastic, the system runs a lot faster and hasn't crashed once! The only bad thing I've got to say about it is that some of my old software won't work on it as it was designed for my old system and I thought it was a bit overpriced. However, all my DVD's are working whereas before a few of them crashed the P.C. on my old system. Basically if you're thinking of upgrading your system then Windows XP is the best one to go for!

I had moved over to Linux, as I was fed up with Windows 98.However, Windows XP is streets ahead of previous versions, and puts Linux "Geekiness" to shame.Windows XP is so stable and easy to use, that Apple must surely have a limited future now.One of the most impressive features is the boot-up time. Compared to other PC operating systems, the boot-up time is remarkable. Just power-up your PC and in SECONDS (not minutes) your PC is ready to use.Overall, Windows XP is a very slick OS and is streets ahead of Windows 98.I used to run various Operating Systems on my machines. I've binned them all now and use Windows XP exclusively.
