Having been the victim of burglary and theft of my very expensive bicycles, the insurance company put the caveat of getting a Gold level Sold Secure lock for my bikes. Fair enough, but normally these things come in at a premium price. Found this on Amazon and was a little sceptical after looking at the price of it and comparing it to other Gold Sold Secure locks. Ordered and when received was pleasantly surprised with all aspects of this. First of the practicality of it; the bar of the lock (D shape) is extended/longer than most others, which makes it a lot more versatile and for me, a much better and more usable lock. It reaches the back wheel and can loop around the frames seat tube with at least an inch or two to spare. Most of the shorter ones have to be manoeuvred into the only position that works for a shorter shackle. The thickness of the bar is such that they would definitely need an angle grinder t get away inside of 20 mins. The lock is such that they will not pick it...forget any idea of that. It does weigh a fair bit and not great for riding around with but, sadly these days it is a necessity. For home/garage/shed use this is a you'll need; it satisfies insurance companies, it is practical, it will work with an anchor point, an outdoor 'immovable object' (iron fence), a looped cable lock for use with these for the rest of the bike to be secured...and in all honesty will mean the weakest point to attack for the scumbags that nick stuff is the frame. Forget any idea of this lock being weak and easily broken - It will take a a fair few tools, some of them electrical and a lot of noise to get away with it so not like the opportunist will get a sniff. Or at least if the chancer has a crack at your kit, you'll have time to get your daps on and give him a crack of your own! Worth a punt and I'm sure glad I did.

After much research bought this lock as it complied with my bike insurance requirements.Living in Brighton you need the best bike security you can get. This provides it no opportunist thief will consider stealing your bike.I particularly like that it has a long reach & wide.So you have more options to what you secure it to.You get 4 keys it clamps on and off very easily.Nice touch is a sliding cover that protects keyhole from weather. Not to heavy bulky or cumbersome to use as others.I mount mine on front carrier so threw away cheap plastic holder it came with.Wouldnt have spent this much on a bicycle lock if I lived in the country or a village. But essential and necessary hardware to protectyour bike in the City.I did also purchase a double loop cable to put through the wheels to secure to it.For added security as some thieves will steal your wheels. This prevents that and I also got a cheap 99p short cable lock to secure saddle to the frame.Incase any prying eyes fancied that as I bought a nice comfortable gel sprung saddle.Anyone who wants to go to the trouble of tampering with those security devices.Needs their head examined or on some serious self medication.Because its not going anywhere and not worth the effort. The best bike security is deterring the lazy opportunist thief to go for an easier steal than yours...

I have experienced the same minor irritations that I have seen others mention. Firstly, the key sometimes doesn't go in properly and I have to take it out and put it back in again before it will lock/unlock. However, this only results in a few seconds delay.Secondly, the bracket could be better designed. My lock has fallen out once when I was dropping down a kerb. However, there is a hole in each side of the bracket just below where the lock sits and I have found that by putting a cable tie through here and tightening it to keep both sides of the bracket together, the lock now sits much more securely in the bracket. On the plus side, to get a Sold Secure Gold lock for this price is excellent value for money, and great for insurance purposes. Thus a very good lock overall, but losing a star for the couple of small issues.I leave my bike in a place with a moderate level of thefts and it has been fine in the 6 months for which I have had this lock. I do also combine it with a cheap combination cable lock as an added deterrent. After all, the first rule of bike security is to make your bike seem less attractive to thieves than someone else's!

I bought one of these because it seemed excellent value for a Gold standard lock. It proved to be excellent, and I soon bought a second. The odd thing is how much the prices vary from week to week. I want to buy a third, so I'm waiting for the price to dip!My son used one of them every day, and after a few months he suddenly discovered that he couldn't unlock it to come home from school. Instead of phoning me, he asked the school caretakers to help him unlock it. They tried hacksaws and hydraulic bolt croppers and hardly scratched it. Certainly no chance of opening it that way!Luckily, before letting them try with an angle grinder and a cutting disc, he phoned me.I told him that it was almost certainly just jammed by the locking bar being twisted: sure enough when he tried the key again, it opened easily! It seems to me that if the locking bar is pushed against, it is hard to unlock. Make sure it is free to move before unlocking and there is no problem. The mounting bracket looked pretty useless, so I didn't fit it.

Unlike the heavy criptonite I was using before decided to try masterlock, this D-lock don't get rusty so easily as criptonite does. It's easy and fast to lock the bike and unlock it, I used to struggle with criptonite. Before buying this item, I was reading lots of reviews on different D-locks, but was a bit worried to trust my expensive bike on unknown quality locks. With criptonite I felt safe, because of it's heaviness which makes you think it's a real deal, but sometimes good doesn't need to be heavy. I'm using masterlock daily and it's about 3 months I own it now and I never got a problem with it ( I'm using lock only not the bracket which comes with lock)If you wan't not the heaviest lock which is easy to use and feel that your bike is safe from most of burglars (I do believe that real burglar will brake or unlock any lock) I would recommend this lock

I read the reviews and notice the bad ones. My experience with 50% of bad write-ups are that the reviewers either didn't read the descriptions or the instructions or are not flexible enough in their knowledge to sort the difficulties. Complaints that these locks do not unlock seem ill-founded as I bough two, marked with different coloured PVC tape, and the keys, to avoid mixing them and fitted one to each bike. Provided the locking section is pushed home firmly to the stop on BOTH legs, they lock and unlock every time. They are also a reasonable price and are 'Sold Secure' approved, which is mandatory for the insurance (keep the card packing just in case). I rate these highly. They fit right through the front or rear wheels of my motor bikes and across the forks. Ideal!

The lock is great and you get the feeling that your bike is secure. Arrived very quickly.I live in Central London where bike crime is a problem and needed something that would make it harder for my bike to be stolen, and this lock certainly feels heavy weight and secure.Only fault was the fixing bracket does not fit my bike (even though the instructions says it fits all bikes)had a small problem that on first locking the bike I could not unlock it, but this was the barrel had shifted, but once the key in and wiggled it worked fine and has not caused any troubles since. For a secure lock you can not go wrong and for speedy service then the seller is as good as the lock

When I renewed my insurance one of the conditions for insuring two of my cycles was that they must be secured with a gold or silver sold secure rated lock. This is a gold rated lock at about a third or quarter of the price of similar rated locks. It seems both secure and strong and I like the weather cover over the keyhole. It is heavy but this is to be expected given the rating this lock has achieved. My only criticism thus far is that it will not mount into the frame of my commuting cycle. THis does have a small frame however and many others will probably have no trouble fitting this into their frames.

bought this after seeing a 'this morining' section on increased bike theft. Have to say it looks and feels very solid. key hole has a cover which turns round it to stop it getting dirty / wet etc...ON advise from Police I use this as they advise which is ''as extra security to lock through frame and back wheel to a un-movable secure fixing for extra protection as if against floor these locks are easier to attack''. I run a cable lock from this d-lock and through my front wheel too. id be put off attacking my bike especially after seeing some poor effort from the bikes outside my gym.

The Lock is good quality and hence very heavy. So it needs to be held securely to your bike! The bracket is only good for line up/seating the lock in the place you want. You need to get yourself some Velcro straps or buy a 5m length of Velcro from amazon and cut say 2 strips per bike about 20 inches long or fit them and then cut after a few wraps. Place one above bracket at top and wrap around lock and frame and a second on the D somewhere, so it's nice and secure to your frame. You will then be good to go.4 stars as they should give you a couple velcro straps with it.

Whats there to say about a lock?well, its heavy and it looks and feels very tough...and clearly looks and feels better than the cheaper stuff you can buy. No doubt a bike thief would look at this and think twice, which is the best you can do really. Saw this as a best compromise between cost and quality and even though there are other even more expensive d-locks available, i personally didnt see the point. I mean, if a thief is determined enough to get through this one, he's probably determined to get through a more expensive one aswell.Comes with 4 keys aswell.

Seriously two days after getting this lock, someone tried to steal my bike. It was securely attached to a bike rack and the thief was unsuccessful, only leaving some scuff marks on the lock. I have not had problems with the locking mechanism, it's smooth and never fiddly. Deducted one star for the carrier bracket, as it was absolutely useless: the lock kept rattling all over the place and I binned the bracket after ten minutes of riding. The lock is heavy, but not so heavy it's difficult to carry in my backpack. Overall very pleased with my purchase.

I purchased this lock as it was the cheapest which had a Sold Secure rating.Pros: Very strong and has a ruber sheet over the U-bar, comes with 4 keys, key socket has a sliding cover meaning it is reasonably waterproof, and the bar and lock it very strong and is better than the picture shows.Cons: Non really, although it is very heavy so you might want to think about where you are mounting it when it isnt in use.I would highly recommend as this is a very secure product.

I was looking at many other locks available on the market and it landed on this on as the best value. I bough 2No (Blue and Grey) and I didn't have any issue with them so far. I think that is a lot better solution than one lock and cable as two locks require more time to break in. My previous bike was stolen, so I don't want to leave any more chances as my new bike value is ~£1000.Generally, I'm happy with my buy so far. Had the lock for the past 3months.

I've been looking for a top sold secure rated lock for a while without the cost and weight of a Kryptonite Evo 4 or Abus Granit. I'd never heard of Master Lock before but their website gives reassurance, particularly the testimonials section. The lock alone only weighs 1.2kg which is great for a sold secure gold lock. No issues with the key and lock mechanism although I expect to have to give it a bit of WD40 every now and then. Impressed so far.
