Summary:I have been using the KMC X9SL and X9L chains for about 5 years on my 9 speed MTB and road bikes and wholly recommend the KMC X9SL chain as a buy, particularly if it can be found for less than £30.+ Durability/ long lastingWhilst I am more of a spinner than the sort of rider that sticks the bike into a big chainring and slowly grinds away, I have found this chain to be faultless. It seems to last longer than the (admittedly low spec) shimano HG50 and SRAM chains I have tried. It just doesn't seem to stretch as quickly as the Shimano or SRAM chains I have used in the past.+ This chain has proven to be exceptional strong (see below)For some reason,I still make unfortunately late downward gear changes at the bottom of climbs (such as a memorably late shift at the bottom of Côte de Saint-Roch on Liege Bastogne Liege) and then tried to power my way up the climb waiting for the chain to downshift (which of course didn’t happen) but I just stalled and had to dismount and untangle the chain from the chain ring.In previous experience, other chains would have twisted out of shape or snapped but in this example (I haven't learnt you see) there was only a slight torsion to the chain. Very impressed.+ Very light (60grams lighter than XTR chains!)The advertised weight 240g (due to hollow pin with cut outs) makes this one of the lightest chains around. This is nice to know, but I would never become weight obsessed over chains if this meant compromising strength (which this chain doesn't).+ KMC Missing link (only worth mentioning to those who have not experience of KMC chains)I am a big fan of the supplied (and reuseable) KMC missing chain links, which makes taking the chain on and off very easy for cleaning. I always carry a spare in case I do have a problem but have only used them for other peoples bike problems so far.= Indifferent to Gold TiN coatingThe Gold Titanium Nitride coating provides corrosion resistance but also (so people say) helps to reduce friction, increase the useable life and decrease the amount of heat generated. I am not convinced that that this is really worth the extra over the x9SL silver version which is hard chrome that serves the same function. The gold initially looks "bling", but when used on the MTB the coating does wear fairly quickly leaving it looking patchy. This is to be expected and doesn't bother me.- Side plate cut out fills with mudI also have found that extra cut out (slit) on the sides of the X9SL chains do fill with mud on the MTB, so this is now a road chain only.I now use the KMC X9L on my MTB instead , which alternates between a full plate and has fewer gaps that mud can get wedged into. This would still be fine for MTBing on dry/dusty conditions in my opinion.

The chain is 115 links + the missing link which makes it 116 in total (I confused myself before and ended up counting them several times to be sure!)Installation was pretty simple even though I had never replaced a chain before. I counted the number of links in my previous chain, and then had to take some of the links out the KMC chain to make it equal. (Or equal minus 1 to account for the missing link i would insert later!). I.e I had 110 links in my previous chain, so I had to take 6 links out of the KMC chain to make it 109, ready for the missing link to be added when you connect the chain.

The KMC chain is a very good alternative to the original Shimano HG 9-speed chain if you're looking for a everyday chain for training/commuting.Installation:Easy to split and trim, the connection link is easy to open/close.Shifting:No problems what so ever on my Ultegra set-upDurability:Depends on weather/maintenance/cassette but my guesstimate is that the chain is just durable as it's Shimano counterpart.Recommended for the rider who wants an affordable, quality chain for training/commuting. It is not the lightest/smoothest chain out there but it does the job.

Works fine and looks perfectly genuine. Always find KMC chains are pretty durable although couldn't confirm with this until I have covered 3,000 - 4,000 miles and used chain wear measuring tool. Bought this 9 speed chain for my 3 x 8 speed hybrid as it was cheaper than the 8 speed equivalent. This works fine provided you always go for a chain for at least as many gears as you have (never use a 6 or 8 speed on a 9 or 10 speed cassette, but by all means use an 8 - 10 speed on a 6 - 8 speed cassette).

Great chain. Put on along with new cassette and my bike feels like new. The missing link supplied is easy to use and it was on in seconds. You will still need a chain tool to break to size, so it fits your cassette and chainrings. Just wrap around the largest cogs you have bring it together to the closest links that will fit and add 2 rivets. Don't forget to include the missing link as part of the length.

The chain comes already with a little grease on.Good for preventing rust in packaging and also maybe don’t have to oil the chain for the first few rides.Comes with power-link ( or the two pinks that allows quick separation and connection of the whole chain).Professional packaging and instructions/precautions.Great product.

Quite a robust chain. I bought this to replace my old chain (same model) which had snapped (after around 1200 miles over 3.5 years) which I didn't think was too bad as it's pretty hilly where I live, and I'm no lightweight! Sticking with the same kind as they're deemed to be quite reliable, and it's not too expensive either.

A direct replacement for the one I removed due to wear. Works fine and missing link connector is simple enough to use (make sure you have a chain pin removing tool to size the chain correctly before fitting - you'll usually have to remove several links). Lets hope it is as reliable as the one it replaced.

It's a cheap, 9 speed chain. It's not the lightest, probably not the best but it works just fine. It comes with a powerlink to make it really easy to install which is useful. Not much more to say about it other than that. If you need a 9 speed bike chain you could do worse than this.

It's a bicycle chain. It successfully does bicycle chain things. It fits. It has a quick link thing that makes fitting it easy. It has so far failed to break, I am really struggling to think of anything else to say about a bicycle chain. Seriously, what are Amazon expecting?

Great price for a 9 speed chain. More reasonable that shimanos price i find and as far as i can tell doesn't feel any different at all.Split link is a life saver as far as installing it goes.Been using it now on my downhill bike for 4 months and seems to be holding fine

Bought this chain to replace a shimano whilst upgrading chainset. Easy to fit and remove if required. This chain has really been tested on a recent rideIt event. I've had other brand chains break under less stress so will definitely buy again when required.

I have a Boardman MX Sport and the spec stated a KMC 700 but I could not find this anywhere. Bought this chain and it fitted perfectly and was very easy put on using the links. Have completed the C2C and the chain was fine.

My shimano hyperglide chain broke within 10 months, replaced it with this KMC chain for under £9 ,easy to join with the 'missing link' and impressed with smooth shifting, ordered the 10 speed for my mountain bike as well

Have been using this on my around-town hybrid for a year now. No problems at all. I was getting some chain suck with the previous chain and tried this without changing the sprockets and have had no problems since.
