I fitted a brand new 7 speed Shimano HG41 cassette to a bike I was building for my son. As he tends to neglect his bikes, I decided to fit a new 7/8 speed, cheapo, antirust chain. When I went through the gears, I found the middle gears would not change correctly. They would either not change to the next sprocket or skip two. This problem is usually a sign of having a stretched chain, but the chain was new.Every adjustment I tried would just give a different version of the same problem. I ended up trying four different rear mechs, ranging from basic Shimano to XT and even an XTR. The problem still existed. I messed around for three days of pure misery before the penny dropped, and I realized the problem must lie with the new anti-rust chain.I ordered the KMC X8. (X8.93)It's by no means an expensive chain, but straight out of the box you can feel the quality. It's supposed to be made from some kind of anti stretch alloy.I work with all kinds of metals, and, over the years, have developed a sixth sense for judging the quality of some metals from just holding them in my hand. The quality metal this chain is made from has the same kind of feel to it as Stainless Steel. It has a slightly soft, but highly resilient feel to it.The X design of the outer plates is a masterstroke, and the whole thing looks like it's itching to do what you tell it to.I fitted it to the bike, with the basic Shimano mech and shifted through the gears to see what adjustments I needed to make. The chain whizzed up and down the cassette, as smooth as silk with no sign of any hesitation anywhere. I reckon I fell in love with this chain around the fifth click of the shifter.A slight fine tune, and my son and I set out on a 15 mile bike ride along gravel river paths and paved canal towpaths. His saddle was killing him after a few miles, so he stood on his pedals for most of the trip. Not one problem with the chain, and the shifting was smooth and near silent. My son weighs 14.5 stone, and the ride home from the river is an uphill 3 mile slog. When we returned home, I checked the chain for any signs of wear to the plates. It still looked like it had just come out of the box.The X8.93 is silver/grey, or, as the KMC site says - silver/dark silver. :)I'm going to order another KMC chain for my 8 speed bike, but will get the X8.99 as it's all silver.Getting a good shifting chain can be trial and error, but this little beauty take all that away. I'd gladly pay twice as much for it. Once you've tried it, you'll know why I say that.

A well made and quiet chain. I did not use the supplied quick link as I preferred to press it together using the roller pins. The quick link is tight and really needs pliers to fit and remove, so it’s not really a quick link to be honest. Wippermann quick links by comparison are truly easy to fit and can be done by hand. I always carry a mini chain splitting tool anyway. I had problems with noisy running gear on my daughters old 5 speed bike, which this X8 chain helped to resolve. Before that it was working well on my 8 speed road bike. On the subject of my road bike this KMC X8 has been the quietest I’ve used out of Wippermann and SRAM. For the best finished chains out of the bunch this and the SRAM are the best. When I tried a Wippermann Connex it had roughly finished edges. The only thing KMC could do, in order to improve the product, is to make the quick link like the Wippermann ones which are really simple to fit and remove by hand (although I am told the Wippermann ones will fit other chain brands).

Arrived quickly and very easy to fit with the links and a pin remover to achieve the correct lengh. If you google about calculating the correct chain length if you change the front chain ring size a formulae can be found which is spot on and very easy to calculate. After looking at several you tubes about how to do it I will always now purchase Kmc chains and fit my own as it is so easy with the correct tools which are not expensive. The chain looks good quality and after a few rides is very smooth.

This KMC X8 seems to be of about the same quality as SRAM PC850 in the sense of smoothness of gear change on a 7x3 bike. A cheaper Z7 is marginally not as good. All three mentioned are, probably, the most trusted products for the application - one can't go wrong with any of them. The fast connection link is good, but not as reassuringly tight as in SRAM PC850.The chain comes pre-lubricated for storage. I dipped it into GL5 (extreme pressure) transmission oil before installing.

This is a great chain for an 8 speed bicycle like my Pinnacle Chromium 1. This chain is quite shiny for my city bicycle but I enjoy the look of it. This is the second chain I have changed and I am very happy with the quality and I would definetely recommend it.I bought my last chain from Chain reaction cycles with £3.5 delivery charge and 3-5 days delivery but this one I got it with a free next day Prime delivery, which is amazing. I only lost one day of commute on bicycle.

Very high quality chain and a very sensible price. Easy to fit with the "missing link" (supplied). You do need a linkpin extractor to get the chain length right, and you need to read the excellent KMC instructions carefully before you start on this. There are also some good explanations and video clips on the Internet. The chain comes pre-greased with a very sticky grease. So if you prefer to use dryfilm lube you'll need a full chain washing first.

Liked that it came with a speed link or quick link, I bought four of these as I found myself repairing and replacing parts on my childrens bikes. The chain is of a really good quality, its great value for money relative to its Shimano counterparts and it works with all the shimano group sets I fitted it to (I fitted all four to different bikes). Very quick and easy to work with.

what a difference to my bike, should have changed the chain to the X8 before, have replaced the chain on an other bike i have to the X8 as well. Now quieter and gears change better as well, just need to find out what to lubricate them with to keep them in good condition

As far as I'm aware, these KMC magic links are about the easiest way to change your chain. They come with high quality lube factory applied, so you shouldn't put any on yourself until the chain needs it.

same quality as other more expensive chains, used on a 5 speed bike with no problems. Fit without having to remove any links though so might be too short depending on your situation.

Bought this to replace a new Shimano IG51 chain which snaked so badly it frequently jumped off the chainring. No such problem with the KMC, works perfectly on my 1 x 8 speed MTB.

I prefer this chain to Shimano or Sram, I find it to be a lot more quiet and smooth while pedalling and changing gears than Sram. And more durable than Shimano HG40.

Good. Haven't had it for very long. Stuck it on a bike that I literally found in the garden and put a bit of dry lube on it and it works surprisingly well.

Fitted this on friends bike, so far so good, KMC seem to do good durable chains with smart link connection, this is my fourth on various bikes. .very good

Fantastic quiet chain, with slick shifting.8 speed chains are getting old and less popular now, but KMC still manufacture them to the highest standards.
