This ruler fulfils the main things I require of a ruler – two straight edges, one marked in millimetres/centimetres, the other with inches divided in part into tenths and in part sixteenths of an inch. The measurements are accurate too, which is more than I can say for its two predecessors. Of the predecessors, one over-measures by 1 per cent, the other by about half that.Perhaps the plastic of the predecessors has contracted with time. (I’m not joking.) One is definitely Helix (very faintly marked now), the other may have been Niceday. They have, I think, become more brittle over the years. One is marked ‘Non-shatter’ – it broke catastrophically when being used as a letter opener on an envelope of thin card; not totally unreasonable use,but admittedly not what it was designed for. The other says ‘Shatterproof’. That has lost a corner. At 17 grams, barely half the weight of its predecessors, my first impression of this new ruler was that it is flimsy. But the old ones go back a long way – so far back I don’t remember where they came from, or when – and it may be that over all those years plastics have got more durable for less weight.Anyway, we will see how this one gets on, and meanwhile it is good to have a ruler whose inches and centimetres really are inches and centimetres.

I am a mature student and needed a maths set for my college course,I originally bought the normal helix oxford set for £3.50 but when i received i was diassapointed as the quality of the equipment was dreadful, the pencil sharpner was plastic and flimsy, and the protactor and 2x set sqaures were really thin cheap plastic and bent really easy, i did not feel that they would last any length of use, as many people wrote the money was being spent on the tin.I returned said item and changed for the premium set, this set is of a much better quality and worth the extra £, thicker plastic is used for equipment and a metal pecil sharpner, and even though it states clear cover it is full metal. It seems that this set is for the more mature student. The only thing im skeptical about is the foldable ruler as i dont know how many times you can fold and unfold before snapping, I would have prefered to see a 15 cm ruler but you could always just cut it in half. Also the ruler has cm on one side and mm on other, i would have prefered inches on one and cm on other but that is my personal preference and i could always buy the smaller ruler and add it to this. Really pleased with this set.

Well, this is a ruler, so not a particularly glamorous thing to review .Someone elsewhere mentioned that he has never seen a ruler where the centimetres go in the opposite direction to the inches and how that makes the ruler useless. I have a couple of other rulers, both of which are laid out this way, and one of them is a sixty or seventy year old steel ruler, you know, from the days when a faulty ruler could cause your death or a world war:-). One of my sons also has a ruler laid out this way, and only my wife has one in her desk which has inches and cm going in the same direction. I can only asssume the other reviewer hasn't seen or used many rulers.Anyway, that said, this ruler is very lightweight, transparent (which is why I wanted it as both my other rulers are not) and can probably put up with a good deal of bending before it breaks. If I had one gripe it;s that it's perhaps a bit TOO bendy. The unwanted side effect of this is that it isn't an effective lower back scratcher, compared with my steel ruler. In summary, it's dirt cheap, it does what it should do and I recommend it.

Bought for daughter who has to measure angles in her Maths classes. She found the concept difficult to comprehend at first, but has now got to grips with the subject thanks to some mentoring from me and mostly down to this excellent protractor. Helix is a respected stationery manufacturer, so I was optimistic of the quality of the item, before I ordered it. Made of hard, long wearing plastic, the angle measurements are distinctly and clearly marked. The plastic isn't easy to scratch, and I expect my daughter will be able to use this protractor through to secondary school. The protractor comes in a transparent plastic wallet, so after use, its put back in this protective case,to further increase the longevity of the item. Very cheap at 59 p, and affordable to replace if needbe, later on.I have also previously bought the Oxford set for my nephew who is studying for his GCSEs in June, and he loves it.

I bought these as they were a requirement for a geological mapping module at university. I needed a set square of around 15cm long, and this product was as close as I could get without paying too much. There are 2 set squares included in the pack: a 45 degree set square with an edge measuring 20cm and a 60/30 degree set square measuring 29.7cm on the edge with the ruler (not the stated 31cm). The plastic is quite thick but gets significantly thinner at the edges and the points. As a result of this, the tip of the point of the longest set square has snapped off. It's still usable, but I'm still disappointed that it's happened so early in its life.Overall, good length for my use,but quality is not perfect.

As a connoisseur of rulers I can confirm that this one not only fulfils its duties as a prodding utensil for keeping people in line while they're queuing overnight to buy the new iphone. It also makes a great noise if you hold it with one hand so the end protrudes over the edge of a table, then if you take your spare hand and use it to bounce grapes at the ceiling.Another great trick is to tie a string through one of the holes on the ruler. Then spin the ruler around and around like a cowboy with a lasso. As well as emitting a haunting noise like a devastated donkey down a manhole it will also make anybody who might be nearby on horseback look at you funny.

I bought one of these years ago and its still one of my favourites. The metal arms aren't as strong as more expensive instruments and are prone to bending a little with heavy handed use but with a bit of fettling and used sensibly this cheap little compass will hold a precise measurement confidently. I've spent four or five times more on rotrings that have struggled to perform this essential compass function. If you're looking for a foolproof compass that you can chuck about and over tighten then this one probably isn't for you but if you want something a bit quirky then you can't go wrong with this one. Just be gentle with it.

This ruler is truly one of the best rulers I have ever used. It has nice clear and quality markings on the ruler making it easy to read. As someone who does work that requires precision, this ruler has been amazing. I constantly use it in school and also at home. The markings are still as vibrant and bold since day one despite heavy use, meaning the ink/etching has not rubbed off.It also features a handy hole on both ends making it easy to store. I personally hang mine on a drawing board pin allowing for easy access. Not only is this ruler great for measurements, it is also good for ripping paper as it has nice sharp edges.

I've always said... you can trust anything made by Helix and this holds true for this pair of compasses. It is the most reliable pair of compasses I have ever used thanks to the stiff joint that means it holds its position when drawing a circle. The pencil is okay... nothing special but the needle is fairly small but this seems like a useful safety feature but a longer one would make it easier to made wider circles but now I am just being fussy... great buy, especially for school.

This compass set is exactly what I was looking for, I bought 5 of them to use in a recent craft workshop where we made dot art pictures on canvas. We used the metal compass to draw pencil outlines of circles of different sizes. We then used those pencil lines as guides and painted with acrylic paint. They are ideal for our use and the short 9cm pencils that come with these compasses are just perfect and lock into place to prevent them moving around or falling out.

Bought this as my Nan was entering her fourth 'build yourself a modern transparent dodecahedron' competition at her voluntary organisation for higher IQs. Its quite the art-form as each edge of a 45 degree angle must abut two further 45-ers in a pyramid structure, actually more like a mastaba structure, she tells me.When complete you can measure your way to Sirius, the Dog Star so beloved of the ancient Inca peoples. It's that good.

This Helix ruler is a class act. I have used Helix all my life, and with shatter resistance built in as standard, you can't go wrong, even if your activities are vigorous. Great for measuring, straight lines and it's a calming blue for doing enraging drawings. On the other hand, you just cannot take it on trust that the ruler you receive is exactly 30cm, so I had to buy a second ruler to measure the first, which DOUBLED THE COST.

This item appeared almost identical to a geometry set that my grandfather gave me 60 years ago. I treasured it through all my school days; it was useful for art, maths and technical drawing.I loved it so much that I decided to buy this for my own grandson.Being a gift, I didn't remove the retail packaging, so I cannot comment on 'sturdiness', but it certainly appears good value.I await the opinion of my grandson!

Although this product serves its function as a compass well, the only small complaint I would have is the needle is slightly too short, sometimes making it difficult to draw the perfect circle with smaller diameters, additionally the joint holding the pencil in place can sometimes come loose a little too easily, sometimes making drawing a bit difficult. However all in all a solid product that does its job.

Wow, I don't know what to say, this is the most amazing Protractor ever. At first I couldn't read any of the numbers until I then put on my reading glasses. I needed it to equally cut pies and puddings in half so myself and my wife didn't argue who had the biggest piece. We do this on Pizza's (extra Large), key lime pies, lemon meringues etc.And a bargain at 59p to keep two fatties happy.
