I really do like this. I can see this one.My Garmin Dakota 20 grew on me, but always had a very small screen. This sorts all my issues with the Dakota out1. Its 4 inch screen makes it user friendly and I personally do not have a problem with the sunlight readable function. There is a back light if you want to use it but, it does not automatically switch on - generally appears to stay at around 10%. I found this is find, even in cloud. No it is not super bright unless you want it to be but, its perfectly readable and that gives it extra batter life2. It has an lithium ion battery which is rechargeable but, still gives you the option to use 3 AAAs if you wish. The battery seems to last really well,so far 16 hours of battery life seems an honest claim. First time out only used 33% of battery in six hours. Second time about 41% in 8 hours.3. Haven't found it any more accurate than the Dakota but, it does lock on a little quicker. My daughter is now using my Dakota so we can compare the two when out.4. Will take a larger map segments when loading. The Dakota limits you to smaller segments under 1gb. The Montana I believe goes up to 8gb. However, I have not tested this. The European open source project divides the world in 7 segments, all are perfectly suitable for the Monatana. This provides world mapping at the cost of a voluntary donation. My existing smaller maps for my Dakota still work. I did find that the larger maps are slightly slower to load, but you can increase the map speed.5, Apparently when selecting the correct option - snap to road etc. This is creature has a voice. It can be attached to a motorbike, which left me with the question - how the hell would you hear it. Then I found the ear phone socket.6. I confess to not having tried the camera yet. Not really what I bought it forThe bad points:1. I still hate base camp. Why doesn't Garmin do something about this.2. Needs a screen protector. From experience, my Dakota ended up very scratched. I bought screen protectors for this. Good choice of products to fit, imports from Germany appear a lot cheaper than the UK.3. I could not justify the 25 pounds for the lanyard attachment. I has a small inovative piece of well stitched ribbon.4. Looks a bit like a mobile phone from 10 years ago but, it is very robust. The Unexpected1. Given its size, with the lithium battery in, its surprising light.2. The layout is an improvement on the Dakota - easier to use and the touch screen seems more sensitiveAfter a couple of weeks I am still investigating its features

At it's heart this is a great GPS unit. The screen is very large, the touchscreen great - I operated it with Gore Tex mittens with arctic liners, but they were think high-tech material, very bulky gloves and you might struggle. You can program the On/Off button (single and double click) two to customisable features (hold down for off). Speaking of which it's intimidatingly customisable - you can change menus, overlays, and even create complicated quite complicated shortcuts that you can place on the device "desktop". You can make and install your own maps, very flexible device. I used it with TalkyToaster maps, which are UK-wide and cost £10. Far better value than O/S.I think the use of Garmins "Basecamp" software (PC and Mac,free) is pretty much essential to using the unit, so bear that in mind if you're not a computer owner. The integrated camera is mediocre, but with a bit of post-production processing you can make some pretty respectable pictures. It won't match a dedicated nice little camera - it's no Sony RX100 - but it Geotags and has you have the unit handy on a hike it's nice to take a shot that you can use to retrace your steps, document a trail, etc. There are downsides. The unit is bulky, and weighty (300 grams) but we knew that from the size vs the Oregon. But it also has no automatic screen lock. You can do that manually but that requires an On/Off click, then a screen click. Then you can do something like get the Camera app loaded. But that takes more clicks, so perhaps you assign that to the On/Off double-click. But THAT can be twitchy, half the time recognising it as a single click. More time, more frustration. And then you have to click click click to get the screen lock going again. This you have to do EVERY time you want a picture... otherwise if you leave the screen lock off and let it bounce around, OMG, that can really ruin your day - if the "bumdial" (as it were) happens to go into customisation menus you can end up with an impressively psychedelic unit desktop when you return. [And then if like me you spend 4 weeks hammering that On/Off button it can start to fade].There are mounts for this unit, and I think that's where it will shine best, as an MTX / MTB off-road GPS.For hiking, something smaller and either non-touchscreen (eg GPS64) or touchscreen with autolock (e.g. Oregon 750).

This is the first GPS I have had and it is a bit complex working out all the symbols and route planning. Over time and more usage things have been getting easier. It sometimes takes a minute or two to find satellites when first turned on but all in all it seems a good model. One downside found so far is where to carry it for easy access. The large back part (for AA batteries) make it quite fat and the normal belt clip does not fit this model. I have had to attach to a lanyard but the plastic clip on the end does not look to be that strong so am still looking for another method or clip to use. So far no luck in this.

Just got back from an archery elk hunt and the Montana 680 worked excellent. I really like the big screen for viewing and the touch screen feature for typing all my information. Very Happy so far!!

As this aged it became slow and the screen would stick taking ages to refresh. A factory reset helps for a little bit but then it reverted. Great otherwise.
