I’m in my fifties and recently got back into cycling. I hadn’t ridden for about five years due to arthritis and following hip surgery a couple of years ago I was wavering about getting a new bike. The lockdown made up my mind for me and I’m so glad I took the plunge. Moving with the times somewhat, I started navigating new routes using my smartphone and the OS maps app whilst also newly signed up to Strava. As my rides got longer it became clear this wasn’t an ideal setup so I ordered the Edge 520. However I found this to be a horrible little device, more like a kid’s Tamagotchi than a serious navigational aid so that went back.On a friend’s advice I bought this 1030 and have never looked back.Just forward, a lot. It really is a game changer for explorers and fitness freaks alike. I fall more firmly in the first camp however when synched with Strava (using the free version currently) it becomes your personal trainer by stealth too. After a ride I like to settle down with a cup of tea, synch the Garmin to my phone and check my stats, particularly the awards for segments times. It all acts as a motivational tool (especially if you sign up to the various challenges) to push that bit harder on certain stretches whilst the mapping function keeps you on course. To be fair the Garmin Connect software is just as good (and there is no paid for premium service) but most of my friends are on Strava and it has a lot more segments which I like to pore over post-ride as well as the other stats. (It’s worth noting here that the recent Garmin Connect outage didn’t stop me using the Edge and it stored all my rides until the system was up and I was then able to upload them). I’ve not used the bundled heart monitor or cadence sensor as I’m not that hardcore but never say never. As for the device itself, it is just the right size and looks pretty cool and feels premium but I did find it quite fiddly to use at first with the combination of buttons and touch screen. What I do like is the nicely engineered handlebar mount which is rock solid and the device twists on and off very easily. What I don’t like is the lack of instructions on using the darn thing, plenty on how to mount it but not much on the actual use of it. Luckily I ride regularly with a friend who has the 1000 and he showed me the ropes on this or I could have got a bit antsy with it.You can ask it to create random routes from your location or manually create your own from the website which I prefer and that also allows you to check out those created by others. Once your route is setup you’re good to go (it hasn’t let me down direction-wise in 500 or so miles) without having to worry about the weather or battery life also. You are warned about upcoming climbs and I like the way it switches to the incline graphic on serious hills so you have an idea of what to expect...and when it will end. I find out new things on this device each week and hope to get years of use out of it as my riding improves and I venture farther afield. My friend has had the Edge 1000 as mentioned for years now and he has never had an issue with it.Overall, yes this is a quality item that really adds to the cycling experience whether you’re a country lane explorer, heart rate/cadence/timing obsessive or both of course. With the smartphone app and/or Strava you are unlikely to run out of motivation and inspiration. It took me a while to get up to speed with it as especially as the device, phone app and website interfaces are so different but I wouldn't leave home without it - it's as essential to me as a full drinks bottle out on the road. I thought long and hard about dropping four hundred notes on this but haven’t regretted it.

There is too much to say about this because it is so feature-rich. this is a good device but some strange things happen. More than once it failed to send mevin the right direction. It seems when I plot a route in basecamp it reverses the route. I'm not sure at what stage this flip round occurs. On the bright side, I was able to pot a route us the OS app on my phone and then transfer that to my Garmin wirelessly! Brilliant! Especially since my phone battery was on its last legs and might have got well lost. Also, I haven't figured how to stop the screen scrolling through analytics of my ride when all I want is the map. I'm being picky but as this price, I have a right to be.This Garmin is not hard to use but not as intuitive as an iphone!

Very nice device. Bright screen, easy to read in the sun. Calculating routes is faster than on the Edge 820 that I had before. The bike computer is big but you get used to it. Dealing with Strava segments is much more extensive than on the 820. You will not only see the PR of acquaintances but also your own PR and your last performance on that segment. Pairing with the phone went fine. Also the linking of the sensors went well. Works very nicely in combination with the Varia Radar.

Very precise turn information which is very important when it comes to overgrown paths. My wife and I ride off road gravel bikes and a tandem. Easy to swap from one bike to another. The round trip routing is a nice idea but I've yet to find a mountain course in Dorset if you see what I mean. Searching for gravel tracks where none exist provides you with paved road. Basically a lot more people need to upload their routes.

This unit is by far the best unit ever. It has a ton of different options, it is fully customizable to whatever training needs you may have and plenty of storage space. Additional storage can be added which is useful if you generate a lot of data using power meters. Battery live is superb and can be extended at a premium prize. However other Garmin units I own proof that battery duration is very good.

Very satisfied. Bright and sufficiently large screen. A lot of possibilities (maybe too many to use). Getting used to the use (previously Edge 800) but quickly mastered. The only downside: accident detection is a bit too sensitive - already twice in case of short braking the followers are alarmed with an alarm. Device is recommended.

I had the Edge Explorer 1000 before, since I unfortunately lost it on a tour, had to make a new one. Because of the battery life, I decided to go for the Edge 1030, and I have to say it keeps its promises. The display is great, fast loading time, navigation is also great and reliable. I am very satisfied so far.

Navigation good. No easy way to reverse a route though. I also think it should be possible to stop a recording, without stopping the route. I'd like it to be possible to turn off the turn by turn navigation and simply follow the route (breadcrumb option). Satisfied with build quality

Have upgraded from a 605 and definitely well worth it. Using with a HRM is excellent and everything updates automatically to Garmin connect, Strava including herat rates averages and maximum. A very useful piece of training kit.

Fast processing despite the "Black Friday" offer, but the price was okay - even if the starting price for calculating the discount was higher than that of competitors. The Garmin was at my home 5 days after ordering.

Large clear display (slightly dim). Good turn-by-turn navigation. However, a separate bracket needs to be used if you want to use the MTB. Has a mount from K-edge itself.

Touchscreen doesn’t respond well with gloves on. Contacted Garmin but the sensitivity can’t be adjusted, otherwise a great bit of kit. Battery life is brilliant !

very nice device with a large display, is easy to read even in strong sunlight, battery lasts a very long time, easy operation, unconditional recommendation

Excellent ... High tech/great map detail compared to my 'old' edge 810. So much data available and with Wi-Fi....well!! Brilliant high-tech device.

Fine device, long battery life, larger screen, everything goes faster and smoother compared to the Edge 1000, I am very happy with it.
