Here is a summary of the bad reviews for this product in case you do want to read them...This is my second Hl-EL135 from Cateye:. It is not as bright as a real headlight: It offers enough light to feel safe at night, but I cannot for example see details like tree roots along the canal towpath.. Flimsy mounting mechanism: Personally, I think Cateye have the best mounting mechanisms on the market. They are very secure, but are also ultra convenient when removing accessories. This unit uses the exact same mounting mechanism as my main headlight the Cateye volt-800.. Not waterproof: I took one of these on a 4 month cycle tour around Scotland and the northern isles. The bike was mostly left outside often with the light on the handlebars. It died after about 3 months of use in very wet weather. But I feel that it has enough water resistance to cope if stored inside when not in use.. Not designed to last: Other than the waterproofing, I've not experienced any issues with this item. The plastics, the LEDs or the mounting mechanism.. Battery life short: I use this as my backup light in part because it has very long battery life, more than 100 hours It has a far greater battery life than USB-chargeable options.. Stopped working shortly after purchase: I've not experienced that with either of the units that I've purchased.. Cover is not secure: I've never had the cover come off and I've easily ridden more than 10K miles with this unit attached.. The battery cover doesn't make a full seal: I can see a little gap where the battery cover meets the base of the unit if I examine it, but not big enough to allow water directly through. But they are right it does not have the finish as high-end Cateye products like the Volt-800 for example. But in summary:It is a good quality budget option with a long battery life to use as your primary light. It is a great backup option if you have a USB light. I highly recommend this light if you have a product like the volt-300,400,800 since they share the same mounting mechanism and can be interchanged in seconds.

I'm just getting another as one of the AA batteries seems to have leaked in my old one and cacked up the circuitry. Still, I'm buying another as the beam is good enough for street riding and safety, which did me well for 6 years of zapping about when I lived on the edge of Wanstead Flats, in East London. I would like to offer a piece of advice as to why I prefer a constant beam on front and rear lights, not the flashing lights which are better than nothing but are dangerous. Why dangerous ? Because approaching motorists ( including me ) find it more difficult to gauge a bikes distance and it's trajectory ( if it suddenly changes ) in the dark with only interrupted pinpoints of light to observe. That's a fact, and a motorist will then only really know the distance that separates them from the cyclist when the vehicles headlights pick them out in it's beam which could be, crucially, too late. A constant light source allows for a driver to gauge the cyclists positioning and distance away on the road much earlier and much more accurately, amongst everything else that they need to be more attentive about at night.Eamonn

I just thought I would write a review here on this light because I have actually had this on my bike for near on 10 years and it's still going strong! When I bought it, I didn't think much about it, I just wanted a simple, affordable light for my bike. But given how long it has lasted without any issues whatsoever, I think it deserves a review to let others know about it. The size is actually quite a bit larger than the newer lights you see around on bikes, but on the plus side, it takes AA batteries which means it lasts a hell of a long time and it's very easy to replace the batteries when needed. It's not quite bright enough to be a proper seeing light, though it can actually be used that way (just not so far ahead as some other stronger lights). But don't get me wrong, it's still very much bright enough so you wouldn't have to worry about not being seen by cars, etc. FYI, I also bought the Cateye rear light at the same time, and that too is going strong after 10 years :)

I have used the same CatEye headlight for nearly 10 years. The newer lights produce more light, longer, on fewer batteries so I thought it was time to update. The CatEye HL-EL135 headlight is small and lightweight and lasts longer on 2 AA batteries than my old CatEye did on 4. In addition to the steady beam it also has a flash mode that is nice for informing cars that you are there. The only quibble I have is that, while the CatEye HL-EL135 headlight puts out more light than my old CatEye, most of the additional light was used to create a wider rather than brighter beam. While the wider beam does work well out in the darker areas where I ride, I'm not sure I wouldn't have preferred a little more light in the beam center. That quibble aside, this is a very good light and it more than matches my old light in beam center with much greater off axis performance. As such, the CatEye HL-EL135 headlight is well worth the modest price.Highly recommend.

This bike light suits my needs well, I've only had it a short while but I think it's a great product. I recently got a new bike and due to work schedule and extreme summer heat in the daytime, I have taken to riding in the night in our quiet neighborhood. I've come to love my peaceful nocturnal bike rides! This compact light is perfect for my needs. I don't encounter much traffic, and in many sections of the neighborhood the street lights are plenty bright to light the way. But in the spots where I need the extra illumination, I love the functionality of this little light. Also loved how easy it was to attach to the bike--in reading reviews before the purchase, that was a deciding factor for me.I can understand where some bikers might need something brighter, but this is perfect for my evening exercise rides through the neighborhood where I live. If your needs are similar, I highly recommend this product.

I bought this to replace my last cateye headlight. The last had broken after a little more than a year. This one takes two batteries so it is much wider than my last, but it is also much brighter. I like the cateye system for attaching the light to your handlebars. It's easy to fit it on and tighten without any tools. This one has a cheaper clip for removing the headlamp from the clamp though. The last one I had a longish lever that you pressed to remove the light, but this one has a smaller, harder to access lever that is more like a button. I have to remove my light every day when i lock up so it doesn't get stolen, so this is a little annoying to me. It's not been terrible to get it off the bike, but not as easy as the old one. I am also worried about it's ability to withstand rain. I ride year round and it doesn't look to able to resist water. I guess ill just have to see how it holds up.

These are great lights for a bike. I have never purchased a bike light before so I have nothing to compare it to, but for me these are amazing. The are so bright even in dusk settings you can see the light against trees on a trail. They are very compact/small in size and fit so nicely. They are 3 1/4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. They take 2 AA batteries. At first I was concerned about the way they connect to the bike with just the strap, but after several bike trips they are fine and hold quite nicely. What's nice is you can just loosen by turning the dial a bit and move the light up or down a little depending upon where you want it to point and then retighten while riding.I don't know how long they will last. What would make this product great is a switch to set the light to different strength settings, maybe a low and high setting to conserve battery.I recommend these.

It is a great light running light in the same way that motorcyclists display lights in daytime. I rarely use it in anything except flashing mode but I have observed drivers coming out of a junction suddenly braking. When driving , because I cycle regularly, I reckon to be very aware of cyclists but I have found myself that a flashing light on a cycle really does draw the eye immeadiatley.I would not say that this light would be adequate for cycling on unlit roads as can happen at the end of a winter ride but then it really isn't intented to be.Having said all the above my light exhausted it's batteries VERY quickly , for the moment I am giving it the benefit of the doubt and have installed new duracells and we will see.If it does exhaust my batteries quickly again I will obviously contact the supplier for a replacement - if that happens I will update this review.

I was having trouble finding a good light that would fit on my wife's bike. The problem is that she has a wicker shopping basket on the front of her bike and I was having problems finding something that would clamp on the basket without crushing or breaking the wickerwork. I looked at handlebar risers (too impractical in this case), basket supports that have a fitment for a light down near the front wheel hub (not a good place for a light in an urban scenario). Then I saw a picture of this light and realised that the plastic fitting looked liked it would slide between the wickerwork and could be carefully tightened up. So, with a little bit of trepidation, I ordered it. It worked perfectly!I had a few bits of inner tube cut up ready to protect the basket, but they were not needed. The wife fitted it in minutes (phew!)

I've used this light in the dark in wooded areas and it gives off enough light that at least I don't feel like I'm riding blind, yet it is not sufficient for me to see all the little leaves and branches on the path. It is very good in flashing mode when in traffic on well-lit streets, as it is very visible and I routinely see the reflection from this light in signs more than a block away. I park my bike in a high traffic and moderate crime area, so I always remove it every time I park, and it is a little bit difficult to reach the clip. Also, I find that the light skews a bit to the side on my handlebar, and there is no way to adjust the left/right angle of the light, only up/down.My brake cable also happens to get right in front of this light in the only space on my handlebar, but it is not a huge issue.

Very Bright Light! This light is much better than two other older head lights I purchased. It's worth the extra few bucks! Besides being very bright, the light is also visible at great distances, especially when blinking. The light has 2 modes: on(steady), rapid blinking together). I find the most noticeable is when blinking. It is very noticeable even at long distances and at extreme angles. This headlight is even bright enough to be seen during the day. It is so good I bought three more for my children's bikes. The only downside is that it is not meant to be a stand alone headlight. It doesn't project light far enough to really light up a path in the absence of other lights. This light does grab the attention of motorists, other cyclists, and pedestrians which is the key to staying safe.

Got this to replace an old Cateye Halogen light which was on its way out. I need it for commuting around Bristol with the nights starting to close in. The reviews were great and when the product turned up i was surprised just how small it was but the light it emits is really impressive...more than my old twice the size one and it says the battery lasts for 100 hours (Approx) which is amazing.Comes with two settings. On and Intermittent. The bracket to fit onto handle bars is very quick to attach and a little clip on the underside lets you remove the light super quick. You can fit this light into your jeans pocket as well so great for little pub trips (dont drink and cycle)

I have had the previous version of this light, without the opticube technology, for years. It has worked very well and retains excellent battery life. I generally use the light on flash mode because there is a fair amount of lighting where I ride. This model version is even better. It is brighter and has a wider lighting angle. I use this light as a headlight while keeping the original on flash mode. The combination is very noticeable and allows me to anticipate road imperfections with more warning.I guess other people might need a stronger headlamp if they ride in suburban or rural areas. However, this small bright headlight does the job for me. I am very happy with it.

At first I was concerned I would be able to mount this on my handlebars because I also have clip-on aero bars. The solution was pretty easy; just flipped it upside down and was able to mount it on the bottom side of the handlebars just next to one of my aero bars. I also like that it has a blink & steady mode. The steady mode has come in handy at night on some of the roads I travel which do not have lamp posts in spots. I had to dock 1 star though because it's not very bright; you can literally only see probably 8-10ft in front of you and you have to pretty much aim it at the ground in front of your tire for it to be very useful when it's pitch dark, but it's sufficient.

Based on prior reviews, I purchased this headlight and found this to be well designed, easy to install, very bright with 3 LED's, and importantly, uses 2 AA batteries. It featured a blinking mode (for efficient use of the batteries)and constant on modes. There was no concern with it staying firmly mounted on the handlebar even when riding over rough pavement. I also found it to be easily removed by depressing a plastic lever and sliding it off the mount. This is a real positive for parking the bike in a public area and removing the headlight would eliminate any temptation by thieves going for a 5-finger discount. This is a 5 star recommendation without any reservation.
