My previous, second-hand APC server unit became uneconomic to repair so I looked around for something else. I know APC to be a reputable brand, especially for higher end products, so was happy to try a consumer level product. I noted from some of the reviews the potential incompatibility with modern power units so chose a unit with an output much higher than I currently need. I've had no problems to date. The APC UPS is attractively styled and much smaller and lighter than my previous UPS. It was easy to set up, is very quiet in operation (just an almost imperceptible buzz) and has kept my computer and router going through a number of short outages. I haven't checked how long the battery will last, but as it's not under heavy load it should last a while, and in any case the comms link with my computer should ensure a soft shut down before the battery dies.My only very minor gripe was that it came with two IEC main-female leads but no lead to plug it into a 13Amp socket. Maybe this was a packing error. In any case I had spare 13a-IEC leads so it was no problem. My 4star rating is only because I haven't had it long enough to fully judge its performance.

Dear Mr Prat who complained that this only had five UPS sockets... you go ahead and buy a real UPS that has ten battery back-up sockets and no "useless" surge protected ones and plug your ten critical devices (including you hair drier and your washing machine) into it so you can run them for 24 hours on battery power. Then this unit will only run your critical devices for a few seconds. Sorry, my mistake, it will probably explode with your requirements. These APC units are fantastic - they all do what they supposed to do, each within its own spec of course. The whole idea of having some battery-backed-up sockets and some surge protected (only!)is to have the longest up-time for critical devices and not worry about non-critical devices (printers, your vibrator charger, whatever). Of course you could have bought five cheap in-line power extensions and plugged each one into a battery-backed-up socket and gotten 20-80 fully battery-backed-up sockets.... People like you shouldn't be allowed to but computers. Or vibrators.

This was my first UPS. I recently moved home and the power supply to my new address is less than reliable. Turn on anything powerful and the lights dim, plus three occasions when the power cut unexpectedly in the last four months. I was unsure how long the BR900GI would power my computer (21.5 inch iMac); turns out it can keep it going for an hour after the power is cut. Obviously this would be less if I were to plug in other accessories like the external hard drives. The UPS comes with a USB cable that once plugged in allows you to define some useful settings from the Energy Saver submenu of the System Preferences of the iMac. You can set it to shut the computer down when the battery runs low,dim the screen when running on the battery and display the battery charge in the desktop menu amongst other things and nothing needed to be installed to get these features. Now I don't panic if the wife decides to use the tumble dryer at the same time as the oven, but I am saving up for another UPS to protect the PS3!

I purchased this Unit following a series of powercuts over the christmas period that eventually destroyed my PC. The APC UPS has 4No. battery backed outputs and 4No. surge protected outputs so the critical equipment can be battery backed and equipment such as printers etc can be surge protected.I am running a custom graphics intensive PC with one 28" LCD monitor and one 20" monitor and with these connected to the battey backed side of the UPS I am currently protected for 24 minutes in a power failure which is more than enough time to save my work and shut the PC down.In the event that I am away from my PC the supplied software will shut the PC down safely 5 minutes before the batteries run out so the PC is always protected.I think there is even an way of the software automatically saving files for you but haven't gone that far into it as yet.For the money this is probably one of the best investments I have ever made! I highly recommend this little machine!

I've had a previous (lower power) model for about 15 years and on a few occasions it has saved me from loosing a great deal of work. You get a warm feeling inside when the lights suddenly go out without warning but the PC goes on as if nothing has happened - even half way through rendering a film or burning a DVD. It controls periferals such as monitor and powered speakers and will power them down when the PC goes to hibernate and power them up again when required, which is handy. This new model is just as good - just fit and forget.(As it uses American conectors (screw-fit ones easy to get from Amazon) you might need to make up a short extension lead to take those mains converters which are built in to 13A square pin plugs for things like powered speakers, but leads for PC and monitor are supplied.APC Back UPS RS Pro 900VA 540W 230V with IEC-320 C14 and IEC-320 C13 Connections - Black

This product is awesome. I use it attached to my APC Back UPS Pro 1500VA and it turned the running-on-battery time from around 15mins to 60mins (When the computer is idle)This extra battery has been designed to be exactly the same size as the UPS itself and have exactly the same appearance (minus the LCD display of course) This means, aesthetically, it doesn't look weird either. It's completely simple to connect to your UPS, requiring just a single lead connection and the UPS immediately recognises it without any configuration. (I'm not sure if you can connect it when the UPS is powered on, I chose not to). After connecting, the UPS will hum for a few hours whilst it's charging this extra battery and after that,it'll return to its usually quiet self.Nice... very nice.

I purchased this to protect my Synology DS415Play NAS. Set up was as simple as plugging it into the mains and leaving it overnight to ensure the batteries are fully charged. Then plug the NAS into one of the protected output ports on the back. In order to shut the NAS down when the UPS power levels are low the NAS is also connected to the UPS via a USB socket, the NAS correctly identified the make and model of the UPS. When tested the NAS cleanly shut down after 40 minutes of runtime on battery power. I set the UPS to power the NAS back up once run time was at 20 minutes, this worked like a dream, once the power came up on the NAS it started up and sent me an email to say it was working again. These are a perfect pairing.

OK the battery life isn’t great if you are running several things off it at the time but that said I wasn’t looking for a long battery life I was looking at something that could keep a workstation, NAS Drive and monitor running whilst I can power down during our regular power interruptions. This did exactly that and when we were out it also safely powered down the NAS Drive and restRtedit when the power was resumed. It did exactly what I wanted. It connected to my Synology NAS Drive with no issues and they both work perfectly together. If you want a solution that protects NAS drives and gives you enough time (20 minutes)to save work and power down computers then this is a pretty good solution.

This is a surprisingly capable little UPS. I use it with my Synology DS918+, and it works very well. Make sure you turn the NAS on with the USB cable connected to the UPS and it will automatically recognise the UPS via the DSM software. I tested it right away and worked beautifully. The moment I unplugged the power, the NAS sent me a notification that it's now running on battery. After the set time, it just shut down without any problems. This is the feature I wanted the UPS to have, and it does that well. With a total of 12TB (4 drives) storage, 8GB RAM, and 1.5TB SSD cache on my NAS, the UPS told me it can run on battery for circa 30 minutes!

Took me a little bit of digging, but got this working well with a FreeBSD server and APCUPSD with the supplied USB port. Have done a few tests and it fails to battery without causing the server to glitch. APCUPSD detects the failure and will correctly shutdown as remaining run time gets suitably low. I also had a quick play with it on both OS X and Windows XP. OS X detects it as an external battery and doesn't require any software. Windows XP requires installation of the APC software, but provides a lot more information and configuration options including how much power has been used.

Having used APC products as far back as the late 1990's in various places due to my career in I.T. I didn't expect anything less than brilliance from this product and it does exactly what I want it to. Protects my computer equipment from outages, surges, spikes etc. I've modified two 4-gang trailing sockets with IEC connectors and plugged these into my UPS, I'm running 3 Mini PC's, 3 Tower PC's and 3 Monitors and still consuming less than 540 watts available for protection. Battery run-time with all of this connected is 10 minutes!

Living in a rural area where the electricity is supplied by overhead exposed lines can play havoc with computers. My whole broadband and ethernet network requires three UPS strategically placed around the house. This one sits in my office and backs up my desktop. The real problem is in this situation is the transient power failures that last a few seconds but knock everything out. My previous main APC UPS served me well for five years and when the batteries declined too mcuh I decided a new unit would be a good idea.

Using this with my Synology DS 213+ unit - works fine (even though its not stated as a compatible unit). When the power fails it signals my Synology which I have set to close down after 15 mins.Automatic self tests are performed once a week with indicators to show if there are any problems.Nice graphic display with various information settings. Was initially worried about the heat and noise this unit would generate - absolutely fine - slight head generated (but not enough to class as warm) and quiet

Good product based on previous one. Still to get out of the box. Says on Amazon website "Parcel was left in letterbox". Er rather too big to do that... No left on the ground in the rain by HERMES. Items delivered by HERMES are never brought to the door. I'm surprised anyone still uses them. It's not whether you consider buying the item - go for it. Just consider who might be delivering it and whether they aren't bothered about leaving high value electrical items for you in the rain....

Very good unit, display options good and can tell you all you need to know about input, output and capacity. Unit is very quiet in normal mode but in battery mode the fan is quite audible, not a real problem and anyway it reminds you that the unit is running on the battery and time is limited. I have not used the software that allows the computer to be automatically shut down as I don't need that capability.
