I bought this because I lost my much-loved 6x18 Zeiss monocular. I have owned several monoculars, being monocular myself. The Zeiss was great but I wanted to try something different as a replacement. This review compares the two:Vixen: robust, optically excellent - image not embarrassed by my Opticron 8x42 BGA; nice and bright with the 21 mm OG, longer eye relief (17.5 mm compared with 15 mm in the Zeiss); better field of view (8.7 degrees vs. 6.9 Zeiss); boxy, overlarge case.Zeiss: a little cheaper, VERY light (58g cpw 147g); even closer focus (30mm cpw 60 mm); faster close focusing; sensible slim case but no lens caps; eyecup fitting and lanyard eyelet cracked after a few years of use. It's optically great but the smaller OG gives the edge to the Vixen, and the extra eye relief in the Vixen makes a small difference to a big astigmat like myself. So, if weight is your main priority, go for the Zeiss; if you want a slightly better, wider image that's even easier to use with glasses, and don't mind the extra heft, fork out a bit more for the Vixen. (I am seriously thinking of getting the Zeiss 4x12 to give myself the best of both worlds!)Sad addition, after less than 6 months: I took the Vixen out fo a walk round my local reservoir on 30 September. It would not focus to infinity and, when I gave it a cautious shake, there was the sound of something loose slopping around inside. Now I have to send it back to the States for repair.
