Glad am I for deciding to spend a few extra dollars on this impressive Suunto compass. Their are just so many benefits with this indispensable instrument, but, to allude to a few of my personal favorites: i) the dial to read degrees is larger than the rest I've seen or had for that matter and this equates to more precise bearing readouts (I now get .5 readouts - e.g., 40.5 degrees); ii) the sighting mirror is a fantastic feature to ensure everything is aligned correctly (during triangulation); and iii) in other review forums, several have claimed to have used this Suunto compass in -18 to -30 degree weather without a problem.Dont forget about your declination (adjustment)or magnetic North will throw you off true North 100% of the time. Hint: Toronto is currently a 10W adjustment. The old saying is East is least (subtract), West is best (add). Therefore, for example, if you have a 90 degree reading in Toronto, you must then add 10 degrees since the Toronto declination is 10W, so your new & accurate bearing is 100 degrees. If you dont adjust for declination you will be off 100% of the time. My personal preference is to mentally work the math versus messing with the declination adjustment on the compass. Google "Isogonia chart", then click on Google images and you will find worldwide declination charts. FYI: the declination number will change every couple of decades. The bottom of your map will last say when declination was calculated. Also, if you are oblivious to "Triangulation" with a compass its worth your while to make the effort to learn. If you care about compasses, just buy this Suunto from Amazon.ca - this is a work of art.

this compass offers a lot of features to the user, some are really advanced. the manual is nice and explains how to use all the tools (and the compass itself) except one.on the side of the cover there are lines to measure the angle of the slope using contour lines on the map. near the lines there are markings of the degree and the hight they should be used with. unfortunately this tool doesnt says how much you have to add for distance on that kind of slope (hint on a 45 degree slope you have to add 40meters on every 100m, easy math). the attached picture shows the metric side of those markings, on the other side are the imperial sizes.the mirror is good and you can really fine tune the barring when using it.take notice that its almost impossible to put the entire image of the bazel ring in the mirror when taking a barring, but you can still compensate for that using the other side 'dog house'.i gave 5 stars because i find the two 'problems' minor and irrelevant for the fractioning of the instrument itself

I have used several types of compass over a large number of years from the military prismatic type to both Silva and Suunto orienteering types. All have their particular virtues. Prismatics are almost impossible to break and are the most accurate, orienteering types weigh virually nothing and are very easy and quick to use, not as accurate as the prismatic but plenty good enough for most normal purposes. They're pretty robust but it is possible to break the baseplate and the markings can wear off with extended use. This one was bought to serve both in the UK and overseas as it has a global needle. The mirror housing, in addition to preforming it's intended function as part of the compass and clinometer sighting mechanism, also provides very useful protection to the needle housing and baseplate. Seems pretty bombproof to me and still very lightweight. Just throw away the curious little plastic clip and thread the lanyard directly into the compass baseplate, then it should still be with you when you need it!

I've owned one for years. The 'G' feature fixes the problems my other coworkers go through with their Silvas and various off brands in regards to hot ground throwing around the compass bearing down lines of equal magnetic lines. If you've ever shot a bearing across a field one flagged 30 meter shovel test at a time, then looked backwards at your flags shooting around an arch, you know what I mean. You can shoot a reverse bearing back to where you started and at 400 meters out, you might be shooting 90 meters to the right or left. That is a problem.... So, this 'G' compass allows you to shoot a pretty straight bearing through those kinds of instances, which are WAY more common than most people realize.I use my Suunto every single day, all day long, and have used one for 10+ years. THIS is the compass you buy !!! Do NOT purchase any compass without the 'G' leveling pivot thingy... It works! I'll never buy anything different.

I have used a few different compass designs over the years and prefer to sighting type compass. I occasionally use a base plate compass when backpacking while carrying a GPS device. The mc-2 is the best of both worlds for me because the sight through base plate functions like a base plate compass and the sighting portion of the mc-2 has such a large cover that the base is actually extended when fully open allowing for accuracy when plotting a course. The large mirror also allows for signaling and camp use. This allows me to leave my signal mirror at home. This is my second mc-2g and I own two M-3g’s but prefer the mc-2 due to the above reasons.

Although the compass seems well made, it seems to be extremely sensitive to being exactly flat to operate smoothly. The instructions are long, printed in an extremely small font and pretty useless to take in the field the first few time. I would suggest a plastic card with the main points. There was a lanyard but the directions do not include how it is to be correctly attached. For a device this expensive, I was overall disappointed.

Let’s just that I’m excited to test this bad boy on my hikes. My only issue was that the product shown in the image is the USGS version and I didn’t receive the USGS version with Miles instead of KM but that’s alright. Inches are still on there. Will be using this on an upcoming hike at 7,500+ ft of altitude and I’ll post an update on how it performs when I return from my trip.

Love everything about this compass. Very easy to use and read. Great illumination for night travel, easy and fast declination adjustment. Clinometer reader is super easy on first trial. Should come with a protective pouch like they used to 20 years ago. Bought the R&K padded cordura compass case (sold by Amazon) and fits like a glove.

First the bad part, the declination numbers are so small I have to put my reading glasses on to read. That's the only thing I found wrong with it. It is very well made, easy to set declination, I've used it 3 times already and had no problems with it. Don't forget to peel off protective layer on the mirror, like I did.

You only need the Global version if you go across the equator. This is a great compass. I got it to replace a similar non-global six-year old Silva model. This Suunto is easier to use for declination than was that older version Silva. I do like the mirror better though, on the older Silva compass.

It's well built, has all the features you could want as a compass and even does more than you'd expect. Signaling device, you can find the angle of a slope. I never knew much about compass', but saw a guy talk about them passionately, made me want to learn also. This is apparently the one to get.

In general a great compass does what expected .... only issue is I had to purchase it twice. Never arrived the first time. Advised the Supplier and received no response. Purchased again because it is exactly what I wanted but don’t recommend purchasing from this company. No customer service.

Very nice compass and we have used this on Scout trips and in survival classes. Works really well, has good sight lines, dial is sold and works well, mirror seems good and other info on the compass easily seen. I see this lasting a very long time. Attach some Ranger beads and you're all set!

I didn't find it as easy to use when sighting as the Silva Type 54.Also, as it lacked a clear dir of trav arrow, I didn't know which way was/is up, so to speak.Just as well I'm retired so.(Not much of a review, I know, but users of this level of kit seldom need reviews).

A solid compass is a must, I purchased this one so that my daughter would have a good compass. She is a beginning camper, huntress and prepper and map/compass skills are essential. This is a well priced, easily used accurate compass for finding ones way. I highly recommend
