Apologies for the abrupt title, but a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.The tiny adjustment screw on the underside of the instrument is for adjusting for magnetic DEclination, a variation that needs to be accounted for, in BOTH hemispheres.What gives this compass its GLOBAL tag, is its ability to compensate for magnetic INclination.This compass provides needle HORIZONTAL stability, world wide.* Should you use a 'N' compass in the 'S', or a 'S' compass in the 'N',(hemispheres), the needle will either dip or rise, so as to foul (stick) in the capsule.These Global compasses are the way forward - 'state-of-the-art' - for a protractor compass. bought this for longer mountain bike excursions and Munro bagging. I was looking for a very good compass to replace my old suunto. What arrived is very good quality, a nice size that fits well in the hand. Definitely the best compass I have used. Good high quality lanyard cord. Came with an adjustable black toggle which isn't shown in the product pic. A nice feature, this allows the length to be easily adjusted. I slid the tiny blade screwdriver into the black toggle to prevent it scratching and rattling against the compass. Magnifying glass is clear. I've read reviews that said it was distorted but this isn't the case. Only small criticism is the rubber pads to prevent it slipping on the map are quite small.

Im an avid outdoors enthusiast and have bought many compasses over the years, and had been using a 'silva' compass as my main "go-to" compass for as long as i can remember. But having read a magazine article about advanced navigation and it recommending this particular compass, I decided to splash out and get one...and jeeze i wish id gotten one sooner.Every detail and tool on it make navigating so much easier and precise and gives you that much more confidence in knowing which directing to follow and your own skills!GREAT INVALUABLE BIT OF KIT! (perfectly partnered with 'the ultimate navigation manual')

A first class, high quality 'explorer' compass. Bought a couple of these to give away. Arrived well packed, and promptly despatched by supplier. I was a 'proper' navigator during my working life, the days before sat navs, and even calculatorrs. Slide rules were the norm back then. Yawn....! Would take this little compass anywhere. Very robust, and easy to use, even for the novice. You get what you pay for, so avoid the so called 'Military' cheap types you see around (some of which I wouldn't take across the car park). The Suunto M3 Global is first rate!

Seems to be lots a cheaper compasses on the site but, for a little more money, you can purchase this well made, accurate compass which has been been produced by a well known and reputable compass manufacturer - without having to spend an unnecessary amount of money for another well-known brand name. I'm very satisfied with my purchase - especially as this compass also features 'declination' adjustment (which is very easily performed).

A deadly accurate compass that you can utterly rely upon. Very comfortable to hold and with a nice weight. The built-in clinometer has proved useful on several occasions as has the printed 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scales. There is even a tiny screw to reset the compass between the Northern and Southern hemispheres!I cannot stress how good this compass is and would definitely recommend it to those who are walking into the wild places.

you may think that this is expensive for a compass but if looked after it could last you a lifetime AND may save your life too!I bought this on the back of it being a bit bigger than my old Silva 4 and found that the bezel was smoother too and also better to use with gloved hands, I also like the curved base plate as it is more comfy to hold.This is a superb instrument and IMHO is worth the money.

Best compass that I have ever used. I've never been big on plastic compasses of this style, but this really is a premium compass. It has a global needle that can be used anywhere in the world, which was what I needed since I was in Africa when I needed it. For the price of this compass, it is a real bargain. The needle is responsive and reliable. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

My Silva Expedition gave up after many years of service and I had read about the M3 being superior. After having bought one from shavenraspberry I am not disappointed, it is an excellent compass. The luminosity of the bezel in the dark is the best I have seen and this winter the serated bezel has been a must with easy use when wearing gloves. A very sturdy and well made compass.

I originally went for the 'Silva' brand name and purchased a Expedition 4-360. A big mistake - the quality was terrible with the compass constantly sticking. I returned it and bought the SUUNTO M-3 Nh Compass which is far superior in terms of build quality and functionality. This is a great compass, easy to read and so far robust in the field.

This is a great compass with many excellent features. I think the roamers are not quite as good as the Silva 4 which has a slightly longer and narrower baseplate. However the bezel is very clear and easy to read it is also easy to grip when wearing gloves owing to its ridged design it also has a clinometer for gauging slope angle.

Don't buy the made in China compass when it comes to such a precision instrument. Suunto is made in Finland and they make good stuff. Glows at night as well if it had some exposure to the sun during the day. Seems to be very accurate and not easily misreading depending on it's surroundings. Purchased for a Hiking Backpack.

As soon as it was unpacked it felt far superior to the Swedish compasses I have used until now. Everything about it from the base weight, smooth action of the bezel and damping of the needle movement was in a different league. Highly praiseworthy bit of kit. It proves, yet again, you get what you pay for.

I specifically chose this model because it has the built in magnifying glass... Such an important feature when trying to decipher the smallest detail on 1:25,000 scale maps. Other than that, a compass is a something you don't ever want to fail, and Suunto are the trusted brand for me since birth

Love this compass, works perfectly. I went through 2 silva expedition 3 compasses in less then 6 months both fell to pieces regardless of the £30+ price tag only thing I'd change is that I'd put glow in the dark on the north needle for night time bearings
