I had bought a Coghlans collapsible 5 gallon water container for when we take the camper out. I would fill it with the water from our house (well water with a filter on the house) for our dogs water bowl and general use. It was quite difficult to use and took up a lot of space. You had to press down on it while having the spout open to get the water out, otherwise it was beyond slow. We like having the water jug around for use because sometimes water hookup isn't available or the idea that strange water can upset your dogs tummy. My husband agreed with me that though we loved having the extra jug of water, we needed something different.I saw the our spout jugs on a couple of web sites and was thinking this was the way to go.We were over at our Cabella's and they had a 4 liter Platypus water tank for +$30. Thankfully I checked Amazon and saw the one I had put into my cart for later as the 6 liter one for under $28. We put in the order. It got shipped super fast. the Amazon packaging was excessive to say the least. But it was here! This water tank is a nice large size. The handles make it easy to lift up and place it out of your way. The 6 liters seems like so much more. It can be a little tricky at first learning to pour from this jug, but once you've got your groove on, it all good. I think that this was an excellent purchase and the only thing that I could think that would be better would be to have the water filter for it. My husband was uber impressed with the price on the purchase and I think that the quality of the product is worth more than I paid.

**This is a copy and paste version from my review on the drinking tube listing, all still applies**All of the other "better priced" (lower priced) drinking tubes and reservoirs I've used eventually just started not working or became too difficult to drink from. This Platypus tube is rubber(or something like that) so it's very soft and flexible. When you bite the end to take a drink it actually opens wide and you don't have to suck on it so hard. Here's the deal with these on-the-go water reservoirs and their accessories: when you begin to use them they will ALWAYS have some kind of factory taste for the first few uses. My experience with the Platypus brand is that you don't have to rinse it a million times to get the taste out. Here's what you do for the best and fastest results when getting rid of the bad taste: fill it with water and let it sit for a few hours. Then empty it and rinse it a little. Fill it with water again and leave it for a couple days. Keep filling and emptying it every couple days until the taste is gone. It shouldn't take more than 3 times to get the majority of that bad taste out. Same goes for the drinking tube as well, I usually leave it attached so as to do it all at once. Every time you empty it, squirt out some from the drinking tube for about 30 seconds. My family has still been using their old reservoirs for a year-ish and they still taste bad. I've had my new Platypus one for a couple weeks and already absolutely love it.

Great for outdoor use I find. As long as you don't bump the zipper the wrong way it'll stay closed pretty well. The zipping portion is strong but relatively easy to peel open and if you don't really mean to it can open up kind of easy and dump water if not prepared for it. I tried using it at home as apart of my every day gravity filter use as well but I have to turn the bag on it's side to get the water to go. I have reached up and bumped the zipper unintentionally and have lost a bit of water that way. Other than that it works very well as a water tank/carrier. You pour well with it and my platypus hose screws right on the end well with no real leaks. Thick plastic so it should last a good long time. Not so great to be used with a filter system though, my Sawyer gallon bags seem to be less of a hassle.

Good item, be careful that the zipper doesn't open up on top after you load it up with water. I was skeptical at first use how strong it would hold up. I have not abused this item, and am careful when transporting it so it does not burst or open. It held up after 3 camping trips. I usually roll up after it's empty and place it inside my pack. It's light, and doesn't take up room when empty = exactly why I bought it. However, it's use is practically limited to either car camping, or through hikers that can use some water filtration system to fill the bladder and return (short distance) to base camp so the water can be used for drinking/cooking/cleaning.I would not recommend lugging a full 6L of water around a mountain for no reason in this container.

I had a 2 liter platypus and liked it. When it came time to replace an aging, leaking collapsible water jug I bought this one.I can fill up the 4 liter input side of my gravity flow water filter and walk away with this unit. The weight was good, surprisingly light with the handles and all. You can pour easily even with one hand. The way the tank spreads out, it is very stable when you set it down. The only thing that was a downside for me is probably a personal problem. Where I typically stash my water related equipment was too short for the tank to store it in without folding it in a way it doesn't appear to be designed to fold in (It folds nicely along the long axis. Not as well across the long axis.)

bought this as an addition to my platapus water filtration system. i been very happy with the system snd the additional 4L storage bag im reviewing now. i have seen that the newer system has a zipper on the bags, the one i have is a first generation with a zip lock closure which is sometime difficult to close because of the handles at the top of the bag. i am hoping when i do upgrade that the zippers have made it easier to close. you can process a karge amount if drinking water quickly with the platapus and i love yhe fact that gravity does all the work, no pumping. ou wont regret having one great products and compatable storage bag is a great addition to an already great product.

When you need 6L of water but still need to treat it on the trail, are you going to risk your bladders/Nalgene bottles with contamination from stream water? I don't. We collect from the stream with the Water Tank, bring it back to camp to filter, UV treat or boil. The seal on the top is a serious heavy duty Ziplock-type, which requires finger strength to truly close so the top doesn't pop open on your walk back to camp. The pour spout design works well, & it's lightweight & cheap enough to carry a spare. Lasted us through our 3 nights backpacking & 3 nights car camping just fine, still going strong.

This water tank is the bomb! I love how it stands upright easily and pours smoothly. We elected to use it for unfiltered water and then filter as needed back at camp rather than spend time filtering 4 liters at the streamside. As others noted, the seal on the top (beneath handles) is a little figity but it worked fine for us. I would never consider putting this in my pack when full of water, it was simply a way to have enough water for a couple of days at a dry camp. The handles make hauling 4 liters of water easy. The unit packs flat and cleaned easily when we made it out of the high country.

What can I say? The ability of this "water jug" to stay free standing without having to depend upon leaning on something is the selling point. It ships with a single cap. I would recommend a couple extra caps, just in case one comes up missing. Rumor-mill states that you can use 2L soda caps instead of the terribly overpriced Platypus caps. I use this in addition to the 4L bag for a total of 10L while base camping.PROS - Rolls up into a space saving bundle. Lite-weight. Free Standing. Quality manufactured (you wont break it).CONS - May be a bit overpriced.Recommended!

We read reviews before purchasing and took the advice of getting screws & wing nuts to secure the zip top closure through the handle rivet holes. We found 1/4" were too big and 10-32 fit perfectly. Used it as an extra water bladder on a 3000+mi road trip through National Park campgrounds, many were primitive without potable water. We hung it fully filled via a binder to the rear ceiling grab handle, never leaked, pours cleanly, compresses as water volume decreases. We filled it through the screw top, but appreciate the zip top opening for cleaning and drying for storage.

So light and pack-able. Does not leak a drop. Great for around camp for wash water. Because of the common thread of the cap, I was able to thread on the top to a bottle of Dawn dish washing liquid. Now I can quickly open and close the valve. When opened the Dawn cap shoots out a nice modest stream of water to wash hands or fill a glass of water (without the Dawn cap it would just dump tons of water). The material is thicker and has a rubberized feel when compared to the smaller platypus bottles I'm used to so it should be durable too.

I love the Platypus brand. This is an American company that does high quality products. So far pleased. What isn't advertised is the open top that ziplocks so you can fill or empty it quickly.I like having the option for ice.You will be glad you have it if you need it. My only complaint is this is at most a $20 item, not a $34 one. However if you want it... just suck it up. You spend $14 on your Double Tall Mocha Latte with Triple shot and Skim every morning when you go to Starbucks, so just zip it and get this.

I was very happy with the Platypus water tank. We are a family of 4, and we just hiked through the Grand Canyon for 3 days. I threw a couple of these water tanks in my knapsack, and was able to keep each of our personal water bottles filled through the 110 degree heat. The large zip lock opening makes the water tanks easy to fill; the small threaded cap makes them easy to decant into smaller bottles. The zip lock demands attention to seal, but once sealed it never leaked even with a good deal of bumping around.

I've owned a few other platypus products and figured the 6 liter tank would be good for keeping potable water back at the camp site. I was a bit hesitant of the zipper but put that to the test as soon as I got it. I filled it up, turned it over to make sure it was sealed as stated in the instructions. After that, I proceeded to drop it multiple times from 3-4 feet and never once did it split open or leak. No worries about the durability of this product and I'd feel confident using it anywhere.

Very easy to use this item on a week long backcountry elk hunt that I had this year. Once it is filled, it sits up very well on a flat surface and it is very easy to pour from. It is a bit tricky to seal up at the top, but once you figure that out... you kinda get the knack for it. Material is plenty thick and it holds up very well with abuse. It's certainly not too heavy to handle when it is filled. I definitely recommend this item!
