Generally quite pleased with this filter. I also bought one of the cheap-n-cheerful examples so have been able to make some sort of meaningful comparison.First off, the claim "Does not affect colour balance or detail" is only half true. Exhaustive viewing through Youtube reviews of almost every brand of variable ND filter show that colour cast is intrinsic to the design and varies in intensity and hue with the extent of the stopping. So yes, there's a cast but it's not offensive at all and will be correctable to some extent. But this filter certainly wins on detail. Very close examination shows a fractional softness but you have to look hard for it. Contrast that with the cheaper filter which is conspicuously soft.

Fantastic filter. Of all the filters I've owned this is my fave. I think its the best available at this price rage/ Heres why;- Fantastic clarity- More rage - goes darker than others I've tried- Markings on lens on both sides (others that I tried only had markings on one side meaning that it can be awkward to know where you are in the range)- I could see no colour shift - others have changed colour drastically as you approach the darker end of the range.- the filter is no wider than a normal ND so if you've finished adjusting you can still use your lens hoodIt can produce the X pattern when you max it out but I found that its only happens when you get right to the maximum which is very dark

I looked and looked for a variable ND Filter and nearly bought separate filters due to other's negative reviews about compromised picture quality (the dreaded X) etc. My partner hit the nail on the head when he said I wouldn't want to be carrying them all around and be changing them every 5 minutes. I therefore decided to get this one. Hoya are a decent brand. The only negative seemed to be that it didn't have an external thread to take another filter. I'm so glad I got this product.Positives for me are: A) variable ND of 1.5-9 stops with no X. This only happens when you exceed the minimum and there's never a need to do that. B) One filter to carry - very convenient. No need to change. C)

Being a specialist filter I've not had the opportunity to use it yet, but since it's a Hoya product I'm not expecting any problems when I do use it. The only problem I do have is that it has two markers on it, on the two different parts, to indicate max / min density, and if you line up the front mark with the min mark on the back part of the filter it's actually the maximum darkness of the filter, I could be mistaken, and the marks could mean minimum or maximum light being passed by the filter and not stopped by the filter? Even so Hoya is still my first choice in camera filters

Bought this to work with Blackmagic Production camera 4K which is known for introducing IR / brownish tinge to dark colours in bright daylight conditions. Most advice recommends Tiffen to be the best solution but I have found this Hoya to be good. The variable filter works well and I have not experienced the X factor most complain about with other brands. This allows me to use the Camera more run and gun too now. I don't need to lug around a matte box.

I was unsure which brand to purchase for a long time finally, decided with the Hoya, I am very happy with this product.I have used this for Daytime Time-lapse using Canon 7D + magiclantern RAW video frame override excellent results. Used this on my Canon 15-85mm, there has been no binding when removing.One point, you can use with Hoya circular polarizer with variable ND on top.But not the other way around.

I have one hoya variable for another camera and to be honest, they are good pieces of kit. Lots of people complain about the cross that appears on the high dense end of the scale but I don't feel the need to expose that long where that could be a problem. I think this is a good alternative to carry the square filter plates, this is far less mess and quite easy to use.

I haven't seen any other purchasers mentioning buying it for solar use...I bought the 77mm filter to fit a Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens.Waited two weeks until today for the first appropriately sunny day.Even at 9 stops reduction 1/2000 at F/10 is needed to capture those sun spots.Roll on the partial (from where I will be) solar eclipse next month.

I dont perceive to see any colour cast - certainly not in post processing.The ring works well - and is smooth and does not slip when selected a density.Works well on the a7r.I dont believe either that ive lost any sharpness on my Zeiss 55mm F1.8.Ive taken several long exposures using this filter - plus 10 seconds and no problems.

As with every other Hoya filter I've bought, this is excellent quality, comes well packaged and simply does exactly what it's supposed to do, to an excellent standard. I haven't tried other brands for screw in filters, simply because Hoya has been unfaultable, so I cannot offer a comparison, but I'm confident this will satisfy all.

I'd never considered using an ND filter before, but a recent interest in lightning photography prompted me to buy one. I'm really surprised at the versatility this variable ND filter provides. It's well made and easy to adjust, being very smooth. My only gripe is that I can't use a lens cap with it.

This is a must for any serious camera enthusiast giving great flexibility and choice of shot or effect and allows for some great shots even in challenging lighting conditions. Highly recommend it. I would not travel anywhere without it.A great product, competitively priced. And fast delivery.

Amazing what a filter can do with a bright sunny light or even better, with some clouds in the sky.very happy with this tool, not quite so happy with the price I paid for it !having troubles in Iso and aperture to get down for recording? This is a great solution! I'll recommend it.

Used this filter in bright and sunny environments. Got the filter to display the dreaded X only by taking it past its limits although it may just be the lenses I used it on having acceptable charactistics. Am considering buying the 77 mm as I bought this for a specific project.
