For starters, UV is always slightly better as a protective filter than skylight. There will be fractionally less colour temperature warming.Generally speaking, in the so-called 'affordable market', these 'pro 1' filters from Hoya represent excellent value for money. There is no point what so ever in budgeting solely for an expensive lens and then sticking a cheap filter on the front. The lack of quality multi coating won't ensure the lens meets its full optical potential. In an ideal world, one would always use no filters at all (putting glass in front of glass) but in the real world, however careful you are the lens will occasionally get knocked.Technically, every time you clean your lens you are risking scratching the coating. And on some lenses, be that Nikon ED, Canon Florite or Leica coating, that coating is going to be one of the most costly things on the lens.Colour and contrast are very much dictated by the quality of coatings so a good filter is VERY VERY important. And contrary to what that salesman tells you........a UV filter of this value isn't really absorbing much UV. And at the altitude most of us shoot at, your NOT going to need a stronger UV filter. If you were a pro mountain photographer then perhaps you would be looking to spend in the region of £200 for a UV filter that really does absorb the extra UV rays found at higher altitudes.I use the Canon L lenses and for the money, I would highly recommend this range of Hoya filters.

I reseached a lot before buying this and am very pleased with my choice. It's thin, no vignetting, and does not affect the photographs in any way I can see. Why spend a lot on a lens and then put a rubbish filter on the front!!! Buy this one.

Just fix it to the camera and forget it. I purchased this filter mainly to protect my lens. I replaced the cheap unbranded one with this one after reading some reviews and "yes" I can see the difference in the colours etc.

The picture shows a digital filter, this is not a digital filter it is a pro1 super HMC which is more or less exactly the same as a digital pro1 filter.
