I got this to replace a 10 yr old Dakota 20 which was starting to get crotchety. 10 reliable yrs is more life than any other gadget I've had so no complaints. The Oregon screen is a vast improvement - good enough to plan your route and read the landscape, rather than just double check where you are. Not as good as a smartphone screen, but works much better in the rain or with gloves on.Otherwise it doesn't really seem to have moved forward. Satellite acquisition and map redrawing speeds are all similar to the Dakota, which is strange as my Vivoactive sports watch - a couple of years older and with a smaller form to put an antenna in - gets a lock in about a quarter of the time. The menus are sadly much less intuitive; I don't think I read a single page of the Dakota manual but have been continually googling the Oregon.Battery life is as good as claimed (16 hrs) provided you've switched off the bluetooth and use the "power save" mode, which just turns off the screen until you press the button - actually an advantage as it avoids any accidental presses.Build quality is if anything even better but WHAT'S WITH THE MINI USB still? Another lead to carry as all our phones etc have long been on micro usb.Final gripe is the in-situ battery charging (no need to buy their overpriced battery - google it) which leaves the screen permanently shining out the charging logo - I'm worried about screen burn.I haven't actually mentioned the location and tracking performance once it's locked on because, like the Dakota, it's faultless. Overall it's a good bit of kit (and my experience with Garmin's customer service has been excellent) but it could easily be much better. If the screen size & resolution isn't important to you, save the money and get the eTrex.

Takes quite a while to get to know how to use this device as it is not all that intuitive and I found the manual to be rather brief and sometimes not very helpful particularly if you are using Open Street Map (OSM) maps. There are some good on line videos which can help however.Have used it for short walks in the country and for navigating around streets. Good points are that it recalculates street navigation routes very quickly if you go off course and the touch screen is certainly help compared to the button models. The touch screen is no good if you are wearing gloves however. There are also a lot of functions available in its operating system but most of which I found to be surplus to my requirements.A smart phone would probably serve my needs but would quickly chew through the battery when continually used outdoors which is where this device excels. You can leave its display on and should get half a days use out of it before needing to recharge the batteries. Having said this I found the battery life to be nowhere near the 16 hours claimed.Bad points are:* when using the OSM maps, the address searching function is temperamental unless you keep installed maps to a minimum. It also does not offer postcode searching.*It can take quite a while to get a GPS fix and is much slower than my old Garmin 62s but usually gets a position fix within 60 seconds.Overall, although it has a few issues, I would still buy it again.

After loosing my 450t on a bike ride I was forced into an upgrade, somewhat reluctantly as although the 450t had limitations from what I had seen of a friends 600 nothing much had changed. However the 700 is much better, mostly. The screen is a vast improvement, and the addition of start and stop buttons for tracking long overdue, however battery life is not as good as the 450t, I got low battery warning after 15 hours yesterday when using Lithium AA cells, the 450t would have given at least 20 hours. Th WifFi seems somewhat pointless, and I have switched it and Bluetooth off to save battery. The Oregon 450 certainly has limitations, but for my purpose, long distance walking and cycling,it is about the best compromise available.

This is a good GPS, it picks up satellites quite fast. I have fitted a Garmin Bluechart g2 that works well with it. This GPS has frozen up on me once, within the first few hour of me getting it, I did a reboot and it has not done it since. The downside is the battery does not last very long, it uses two AA battery's, I use it in a boat and turn it off after I get the info I need, I do not feel the battery's will last all day. The battery meter is a four bar icon, it drops one bar at a time until empty, whereupon it then turns itself off. It could do with a battery percentage meter like the ones on smart phones.

I bought this to replace my broken/beaten up Oregon600. A bit of an upgrade but well worth it. I especially like the wi-fi connectivity and the ability to search for geocaches 'in-the-field'.Easy to use (although prior knowledge helps with my previous use of a similar product) and does exactly what I need.

This is as exceptional piece of kit. It does take some getting used to, just because it has so many features, but once you get going with it, it is difficult to fault it. Battery life is not particularly brilliant but it compares very well with other GPSr's I have used.

First class item, feels solid and fits well in the hand. Garmin have improved the system in that previous tracks/routes can automatically be removed prior to creating a new one. This alone has save me a lot of time
