If you have ever been tempted to venture out in the dark, then this compact technological wonder is the one for youBought the Draper 42989 (not to be confused with model 49289) on the Tuesday and couldn't wait until darkness fellBy 22.48. max noir had arrived ..... just a few turns on the optimally geared winder, and I was ready to Brian Coxwith the best of them .... pressed the lumination button .... and WOW !!!! ... Stand back .... Goodness knows how many lumensI had ... The cat jumped back . . . (yes . . exercise this space cowboy with extreme caution)Just another 14 turns on the crank and I was ready to explore the orchard, with not a hint of reprehension often experiencedwith lesser torches ...(I own 9 other torches none of which comes within a mulligan of the performance of the 42989)Used it on 17 other occasions since then and can honestly say that if you want a torch to show off to your neighbours, then theDraper is the one for you ..Buy it now and get out there

A wonderful idea, reasonably well executed. It fits the hand well, the light is good and always white, and it holds a charge well. The great thing about this is that if it is left lying around, you need never ever wind it up yourself again - anyone who sees it cannot resist having a wind-up.The bad thing about it is that the case did not survive a drop test - a small person visiting us forgot to use the wrist strap. Now it is held together by some glue, and luckily it is also still working. It is good value when considering how much the bits inside it might cost us, and we never need to replace the batteries.Four stars because IMHO it should be a bit tougher. Also worth considering is the muchbrighter

I bought 2 of these because we have a lot of power cuts. I'd looked at the plug in torch that comes on in a powercut but they don't have rave reviews and I don't want a nightlight the rest of the time. So 2 of these, hung from the picture rail above the light switch near the top and bottom of the stairs seems to be the answer. Not sure how long you would get from a few minutes winding but having tried out in a recent powercut I had enough light to safely get downstairs and light lots of candles. So far they are more reliable than the torches I had, which always seemed to not work when needed. They aren't the prettiest solution I could come up with but they are the most practical.

I bought one of these late last year, and found that it was ideal for keeping in the car. Although it has only one brightness setting, it is more than adequate for this type of use. We have used it when camping, and never had any reason to criticise it. I recently purchased another for the other car in the family. It is comfortable to hold an the switch is easy to operate. The winding handle is perhaps a little more awkward than some, bit nevertheless it does the job well enough. This is an excellent torch at this price and is highly recommended as efficient and remarkably good value.

We recently had a power cut for 16 hours, and my brother-in-law let us borrow the cheaper version of this touch, which was ok but not that bright. That prompted me to buy this more expensive Draper one, I'm glad I did; it is really bright, have wound it up so far just once and have used it many times since and still not had to wind it up.Buy one of these now! It is the most useful item to have for emergencies and other uses and you won't have to worry about batteries going flat.

This wind-up torch does what it promises, and it does it good. The light is bright enough to be useful for its intended purposes, and a quick charge produces enough light for quite some time. The wind-up handle is sturdy and non-obtrusive when not in use. It makes quite a loud noise when being cranked, but it ought not to be a problem. The finishing and the overall quality of the product are good - as ought to be promised by the price.

These torches need very little winding for a really good bright light. They are quite bright enough to read by. I really like the design, rather like a Star Trek phaser. The wind-up handle clips neatly away when not in use, and winding is nice and quiet. Why only 4 stars? The casing appears a little flimsy, I would not like to drop one on a hard service. If you can live with that, these torches are an excellent bargain.

I was fed up of buying batteries for my torch. So purchased a wind up torch from my local supermarket, but I was wasn't impressed, & returned the item for a refund.I then saw a similar look torch at Amazon. Although more expensive, the illumination was to last about 20 minutes.I wasn't disappointed, and now I don't have to bother about replacement batteries.A good buy.

I love this torch. It feels great in your hand, to hold in your palm. Yes it does look a little 'tinny' and the quality of the chrome could have been a bit thicker, however the light is bright and you will always feel good holding it as it feels smooth. This would make a great gift for a teenager or adult. Well done - a great design for £10.

Have several wind up products including another similar draper torch, bought a couple of years ago, this one is the best yet! easy wind up and very good light given off by the 3 leads.Fits well in the hand and the switch is much better to use than some of the cheaper torches I have, so 5 stars for this Draper!!

For a cheap wind up torch you cannot go wrong with this. The mechanism is easy to use and the blurb claims 20 mins luminescense from 1 minute of effort. I haven't been able to test that but the beam is quite bright, and the torch itself is small enough and light enough to be perfectly portable.

8.5.2009

A great alternative to messing about with batteries, the Draper wind-up gives a good strong beam and lives up to its 20-fold use-versus-wind time claim. Not too heavy, fits into pocket, and handle stows neatly. Minor criticism; wrist strap could be longer.

But you need to have small hands to do it. It's not easy to wind, but I have small hands and I do use this still. It's handy to have around, for finding this under beds and furniture, etc., because you don't have to depend on batteries. Kids would love it.

I bought this as an emergency light for a holiday. Can confirm it lasts at least 20 minutes per charge and provides enough light to read a book when the mains go off.Easier to use than I thought it would be and robust enough to last two weeks so far.

The best wind-up torch we've had. Follow instructions and wind for less than a minute then it lasts for at least a 20-minute walk in the dark countryside; perfect. It's compact and sturdy. Just the job. Definitely recommend.
