This is my favorite headlamp. I have had it for about 2 months now and have used it 5 days a week, every week since I got it, at my job. (I do plumbing,) I also own a coast HL27 and two coast FL60s. (Btw I was very disappointed with the FL60s.) Although the HL27 is a very nice headlamp, I prefer the black diamond due to the applications in which I use it.The small size is more convenient for me. As a plumber, I am frequently going into crawl spaces and other dark places where I need more light. So I carry a headlamp with me either in my pants pocket or jacket pocket everywhere I go. The small size of this black diamond spot makes it very easy and convenient for me to do that.Unlike other headlamps that are bulkier and dig into my leg or side, this one fits very nicely in my pocket and I don’t every really notice it being there. This lamp can light up a large area in a crawl space, or anywhere else really, if you need it to. Generally I will run mine at about 35% brightness until the batteries start draining, and then turn up the brightness as needed. I find the feature where you tap the side to turn on full power is quite useful. To my surprise it even works when I’m wearing my thick cut resistant gloves.I have read other reviews that knocked this headlamp because of the “yellow” circle that is in the center of the spot light. I too noticed this when I first received this headlamp, and at first I was like, “oh no, the yellow spot of doom!! Minus 2 stars on amazon review!!!!!” But in all honesty that yellow spot hasn’t bothered me at all. I only every really notice it if I’m looking at a white surface, which is not often since usually I’m looking at mostly dirt and pipes... well, pvc pipes are white but still. It is very subtle and to me doesn’t stand out to me or take away from the headlamp experience in any way.I would 10/10 recommend this headlamp. If I lost mine I’d buy it again. Did I mention this is the least expensive headlamp that I own?I have noticed on a few occasions that this light has turned on while in my pocket. But I really can’t complain about that because it has a lock feature to keep it from doing that, I’m just too lazy to use it. Also is has the red light feature which I never use, as well as strobe and sos I believe. I don’t ever use those features, and for the most part they don’t really get in my way. However, I have had the red light turn on when I accidentally long pressed the on/off button, and it can be confusing trying to switch it back to normal light mode. To me, it’s not a big deal since I read this instructions and know how to switch it back, but some other people might think differently.Cheers

This is a review for the new (2016) squarish model Black Diamond Spot. It's the fourth Spot I've owned, and I've used every generation of them.Compared to the previous model Spot, here are the improvements:- THE RED MODE IS FINALLY USEFUL! In previous Spots, the red LEDs were uselessly dim.- This is more waterproof. That's cool, I guess. I haven't used it in sustained rain or submerged it in water yet, but it's nice to have the option to do that.- The white mode is a bit brighter. It was already absurdly bright, now it is even more so. I've used this while mountain biking and was not lacking for light at all.- It doesn't start at maximum brightness. When you first click it on,it starts at an intermediate brightness. The full output is completely overkill for most uses, so this reduces the amount that you blind yourself when you first turn it on.What I don't like:- THE BATTERY LIFE IS MUCH SHORTER. Expect 1/2 to 1/3 the battery life of the previous Spot. I need to recharge my 750mah Eneloops after a weekend of using this headlamp. Before, I could do several weekend trips between needing to recharge my batteries. Update: see power consumption measurements below. The new Spot consumes more power in some settings, less power in other settings.- The tap-to-change-brightness feature is bad and annoying. Black Diamond, please stop inflicting this on us. A dozen or so times per night I reach up to adjust the strap or the pointing of the headlamp and accidentally blind myself because I brushed the side of the headlamp and it suddenly switched to max output.- The one button to do everything is a bit complicated and takes getting used to. Most people, when they first pick up the headlamp, have no idea how to operate it. Reading the manual is basically necessary. The headlamp would be MUCH improved if it had a switch (positions: off, red, wide white, spot white, wide + spot white) and a wheel for adjusting brightness. This is more intuitive and easier to operate, and you wouldn't be constantly blinding yourself by accidentally switching to max output every time you bump the right side of the headlamp.Update: I connected the current-gen and older-gen Spot headlamps to a power supply and measured their power consumption. Keep in mind that a typical AAA battery has 750 mAH of power.New (2016 boxy model) Spot:Flood + spot: 0.811 A (you'll kill your batteries in ~1 hour!)Spot max: 0.376 ASpot min: 0.024 AFlood max: 0.232 AFlood min: 0.026 ARed max: 0.083 ARed min: 0.011 APrevious-generation (5-LED) Spot:Spot max: 0.458 ASpot min: 0.009 AFlood max: 0.112 AFlood min: 0.004 ARed (no dimming available): 0.200 A

The Black Diamond Spot has a lot of features and decent optics. It’s a bit cumbersome to use. Once on the head you can tap it to turn the proximity LED on and off.Pros:-- Good spotlight mode that lights the way with seeing some of your perimeter without the small too-bright dancing spot effect of some headlamps. The spotlight put out a nice beam shape with a ~35 degrees center hotspot and ~60 degrees lower brightness zone. I like uniform, but this spot mode is much better than most headlamps. This is good for seeing the trail and most everything nearby you point it at, which is what is most important.-- The flood light LED is a really wide angle, about 120 degrees. This is a great beam angle for working up close.-- The continuous luminance adjustment is cool. I usually just need low and high power, and sometimes a medium level. The feature is not much value to me, but I would have liked more if it didn’t often change when touched.-- Construction seems sturdy.  Better than the cheap headlamps.-- It handled 3 hours in medium-to-light rain OK. A little water got into the batteries, but it did not conk out. Any water still worries me so dry this thing out after any use in rain with the batteries out so the batteries and circuits don’t go bad.  Described as IPX8, but IPX8 is a dive light. IPX7 is 1 meter under water for 30 minutes. But since I don’t plan on swimming with it on (intentionally anyway), not a biggie.Cons:-- Touch changing from spot to flood or changing luminance is cumbersome. There is a learning curve, but even after a few nights out I have to take it off and fuss with it frequently to just get to a mode I want. Also, when I reached up to adjust the lamp position on my head, it often changed mode or brightness, which is really annoying. Adjust it gingerly.--  The spotlight LED gets hot to the touch.-- The light is a cool white light. I still need to pull out my old halogen flashlight to see tracks and most anything else other than easy to see trails. If you stay on well-worn hiking trails it is fine.--  Hey, there is no padding behind the headlamp other than the strap. Not very comfortable for long term use unless on a helmet.  The strap also slips a bit so I need to adjust frequently (see my comment about unplanned mode changes when it’s touched).Overall, the Spot is worthwhile to have in my collection and will be useful for when I want both spot and wide angle lighting.

Huge improvement over 2015 Spot model. I own two Spot 2015 models and also a 2016 Princeton Tec Vizz 205. In my opinion the 2016 Spot is the clear leader of all brands in the 160-200 lumen category when you factor in performance, features, and dollar value. While the Vizz 205 offers a really nice clean bright main beam with no artifacts- alas the main beam is not dimmable. Both the 2016 Spot and 2016 Vizz are comparable in the proximity and red lamp functions. I've really become spoiled by all the features you get with the Spot. The dimming and tap to toggle features plus ease of use of the main button on the Spot has no equal. The main button on the Vizz works fine but it is hard to push and very difficult to work with gloves on.The Vizz for me is very comfortable to wear but is noticeably heaver at 3.4 ounces. The 2015 Spot is 3.3 ounces and the 2016 Spot is just a shade over 3.2 ounces. All weights are with batteries installed. So far I'm very pleased with the battery life during general use. Another reason I like the tap function where I can tap to toggle to full power when I need it, but quickly tap back to lower power to conserve batteries as most of the time a lower output gets the job done.My only critique of the BD Spot is that I figured with the introduction of the 2016 model they would have found a cleaner main LED bulb that would eliminate the yellowing artifact from the center of the beam. I've had in total now 3 2015 Spot models, and now this 2016 model, and every one of them to some degree has had this yellowing at the center of the beam. The P-Tec Vizz max bright main beam is super clean and clear by comparison. It's not a huge deal when one considers all the features, functions, and price of this headlamp but come on BD, you can fix this. Because of the yellowing in the main beam I think this headlamp is a solid 4.75 stars. Fix the yellowing of the main beam and you have a true five star product.

I’ve owned a bunch of different headlamps over the years. This is the best light I’ve ever used. Yes, the controls take a little getting used to. Very much like an iPad, two buttons control everything. Basically, there are six control inputs you can make with the buttons to control the light. Use it a few times and play with the controls and you’ll catch on quickly. Turn the light on and it starts with the last setting you used. You can configure it so that the primary light is either the spot or the flood, then use a second input to turn both on at once. If you usually need the flood light, then you make that the primary light that comes on when you press the on/off button. If you typically use the spotlight, then set that as your starting point. The white wide-angle floodlight is fantastic. The light is in the right place to see where you are walking or what you are working on without needing to adjust the light down. The spotlight is absolutely incredible for such a small light! The fact that you can dim all of the lights is maybe the best feature of all. I’ve had other lights that are too bright at times and the reflected light is blinding to the wearer. Being able to turn it down to a glow when you don’t need it that bright has been great. I do wish the red light was a bit brighter, but for reading or working close it is fine. The light has a good quality headband and is compact enough to fit comfortably in a pocket. I use this light several times a day when feeding the horses, and when I am hunting. The locking feature keeps it from coming on in a pocket. Great light for the money!

This was an upgrade from an old Black Diamond headlamp that had lasted me for years but just wasn't bright enough for alpine starts or winter trips (80 lumens). I'd also been wanting a lamp with a red light feature for reading or to not wake my tent mates. This headlamp is great. The spot is so strong, I'd be surprised if you needed anything brighter. The flood feature isn't as solid but still plenty bright for general light. The fact that the red light dims is great and really helpful for reading. The locking feature is also handy and helps to keep it from turning on in my bag, which has definitely been an issue before.I also really appreciated that this is essentially waterproof. As some people mentioned the "button" on the side to bring it to full max brightness is a little strange to get a feel for at first. But after a couple days it became second nature. I've already used this in the rain and snow with no trouble, as well as during a Wilderness First Responder course when we were doing nighttime scenarios by the light of our headlamps. It worked really well. It's not *quite* as comfortable as my last headlamp on my head, but it's still pretty solid. I went running with it both with and without a hat and it stayed in place pretty well. One thing I noticed is that the strap adjustment can get moved pretty easily. But, at the same time, it's really easy to readjust. It takes about 10 seconds. So it's really no big deal for me.This is a bomber headlamp for a sweet price - I did a ton of research before buying and am really pleased!

I bought this for general use, but also to work on my car at night. It was rated very highly for close work, and that's what I'm doing with it mostly. I was a little disappointed that the broad light for close work isn't as bright as I'd like, but most of the time I do the "powertap" thing where you tap the side and the spot light comes on. The spotlight is very bright and is wide enough to show you pretty much anything you're looking directly at. The spot and broad light at the same time is a good amount of light, and seems to let me do anything I need. Some headlights are really made for far off things, and this one does that pretty well, but it's not really made for things way off in the distance (which is fine for me).I needed something for close work and this works well.I love the fact that you can easily put it on. The 3 strap models are too clumsy to put on. They always get tangled and messed up, but a 2 strap type like this works well.I think a more powerful broad light would be great, but this fits that bill well enough. It burned through the factory Duracells pretty quickly (on high power modes), but when I tested them after I took them out they tested good. This implies that it doesn't drain the batteries well. I put in eneloop rechargeables. Hopefully I'll get better life from those (but at least those are rechargeable. Overall though, for the price, it's a nice headlight. I'm happy with it.

A brilliant little, lightweight torch which I know will come in handy both at home and outdoors. It's very bright, so it's perfect for trail-finding and the floodlight is just bright enough to read or see what you are doing in front of you without blinding someone. Right out of the box, learning how to use its many features is a learning curve. I recommend reading the instruction manual and checking out the Black Diamond Youtube channel. For everything else, it's waterproof, and comes with a handy light-lock so the light won't turn on abruptly in your bag and waste the batteries. The red light is also useful for night vision, and every light mode can be dimmed to a desired brightness. The only complaint I would have is that this torch does not last the advertised 30h at maximum burn time. I got about 6h before I had to swap out the AAAs. However, if you dim the light, and use only one light mode this will most likely last you more. I find it hard to believe you'll need the full 300 Lumens at home or even out night hiking (it's blinding)! The torch also comes with a handy battery life indicator. I highly recommend bringing a spare set of batteries if you will be going out in the backcountry. Using it at minimum brightness is enough to see your garage workstation, and walk around the camp.

Frequent campers, we have used headlamps around the campsite, as well as taking care of our backyard chickens at night. The lamps we had were ok, but I came across these on Cyber Monday and decided we needed an upgrade. My husband said it was just because the old lamps needed new batteries, but I did a comparison with new batteries for all, and the Black Diamond Spot Headlamp far out-lights the competition.I'm not super great at deciphering instructions and it was difficult to read the accompanying diagrams to understand where the batteries go and how to turn on the various types of lights. But I muddled through. Of course, we will mostly be using just the single bright light feature, but I tucked the instructions in our camp folder for future reference if I ever want to turn on the blinkers. Our previous headlamp had an additional strap across the top of the head, but this head strap can be adjusted for the perfect one-band fit. The range of direction for the adjustable light is greater than our old headlamp, so I can point the light virtually straight down and don't have to bend my head to have the ground in front of me lit up.It lights up the path ahead for late night hikes and lights up every corner of the chicken coop for after-dark water and feed changes.

This headlamp is fantastic in just about every way.The spot light is bright enough to use for mountain biking on a dark trail, while the dimmed flood light is subdued enough to avoid blinding your friends when you turn toward them. Most importantly for me, though, the red flood light is a must for astronomers hoping to preserve their night vision. The lamp is rated to withstand submersion at 1 up to meter for up to 30 minutes, and I have had no trouble yet with water ingress. However, the tilting range of this headlamp is what sets it apart from the others I have had in the past; it will go from tilted up about 15 degrees to tilted down almost 40 degrees, which means it will function well on most climbing helmets. The tap-to-adjust brightness feature seemed gimmicky to me at first, but it has actually proven fairly useful. Basically, you tap the right side of the headlamp housing to toggle between the current brightness and maximum brightness setting. I have also tried this feature wearing wool gloves, and it works fine. Perhaps this headlamp's only weakness is that switching between modes is not entirely intuitive. But it is similar to previous versions, and there is a good Backcountry Edge video on YouTube about how to do it.

I love this headlamp! I had to use it earlier than expected after a serious power outage. Switching between modes and using all of the functions takes some getting used to (I actually had to read the manual!), but once I got the hang of it, I found most of the functions to be handy. This headlamp has a focused, high intensity beam, a softer, diffused white beam, and a diffused red beam. For some reason, the battery life for the diffused (lower intensity) red and white beams is lower than that of the high beam.Pros:Super bright, I can't imagine you would need more light than what this unit puts outMyriad functions that are actually all usefulWaterproofWay better than the cheapie $15 headlamp I used to useCons:Steep learning curve,if I had to figure out how to use the headlamp without the manual, I would be very frustrated!Battery life is so-so, not great. The light is so bright, that if you look at somebody else's face, you'll definitely blind them temporarily. The dimming function helps, but it can still be quite frustrating.

For my kids and myself have purchased a minimum of 20 small L.E.D. headlamps. Some would not work very well right from the beginning and others would do okay for a month or so. These were used for camping some but mostly were used for readłng and other light duty uses. I just got used to buying a couple every month or so. Then once when I really needed one to work I could only get a flicker out of one, so I decided to see if there were some better ones that were not bulky and would actually work when I needed it. To my surprise there were several more expensive name brand ones to choose from. And really the price was only double or triple the crappy ones. I read and picked this one and it is now one of my favorite little gadgets. It’s waterproof. It’s got a little weight... just enough so it doesn’t seem cheap and best of all, it never fails to come on and work just like it’s supposed to. So if you are needing a headlamp for anything other that a toy that might work sometimes, I’d get this Black Diamond. You’ll be happy you did.

This is an excellent headlamp. The construction seems very durable, and the light output is fantastic over short distances. Headlamps are not intended to be long-range devices like proper flashlights, but over this light's intended range it puts out an amazing amount of light making it especially good for close-up work. It makes a fantastic addition to head-mounted magnifying glasses, some of which do come with their own lights but they are extremely weak. It does plow through batteries with constant use, so if you need the light on a lot I would advise buying a set of rechargeable AAA batteries and a cheap charger (both of which Amazon has for absurdly low cost).I prefer being able to change standard AAA batteries rather than be unable to use my light because it needs to charge a built-in LiIon battery... especially problematic if the reason you are in the dark is due to a power outage!I shopped around quite carefully and I think this may be the best headlamp on the market, or at least the best one for my needs.

I use this on 12 hour night shifts in a deployed location working in and out of non powered buildings inventorying item. The spot functions good but is a power hog, beam distance is ok with decent lighting spill. The flood beam is very useful for close tasks and provides enough light with out being over powerful and glaring everything out. The red light is very useful in deployed locations and for saving night vision. The head lamp is very power hungry I would recommend rechargabols to keep it fed, as regular AAA barely made it 2 nights the rechargeable seem to last me 3-4 nights as well as the lithium battery's but but they are expensive. please note I change battery's when the light gets to the point of being unusable for my tasks, but would still work in a camping setting. This is a head lamp fit, function and comfort are all very good, if I could change anything it would be to change the light order. One click for flood and 2 for the spot, the hold for red light is awesome and I would not change it.

I purchased this headlamp based on a friend's input along with the positive reviews. I'm impressed with it and it's definitely met my expectations. I've used it mostly to work on cars or get some light into tight spaces where a hanging or floor lamp won't fit. The strap is comfortable and will fit a wide range of head sizes. I have a large melon, and it there were no fitment or comfort issues. You can feel the lamp but only slightly and if you think about it enough. About the only issue I have with the lamp is the sequencing to turn on the other, or both lights. However, in all fairness, many other manufacturers are doing the same thing. I primarily use only the square lamp, and as long as you don't press the on/off button fast or hold it, the next time you turn it on, it will be in the same mode. Battery life seems sufficient, too. I've used it several hours with only the square lamp on, and it's still emitting the same amount of light. Overall, I would recommend without hesitation.
