This is a very nifty piece of equipment. It cuts around the rim of a can lid in such a way that the lid just lifts off, leaving no sharp edge on either the can or the lid. Furthermore, if desired, the removed lid can be fitted fairly tightly back on.Cutting and removing the lid is a two stage process, and how to do it is not totally obvious from the diagrams on the card supplied with the opener. To make the card 'multi-lingual', it has hardly any words on it at all - and none of explanation.Stage 1 involves gripping the rim of the can firmly between the serrated and smooth wheels on the underside of the can opener's head. Then the handle MUST be rotated clockwise, so that the can rotates anti-clockwise.Take note of some part of the picture or writing on the can's label as a pointer to where you started, as there will in many cases be no other indication that you have completed the full circuit. After doing the full circuit, release the can opener from the can.Stage 2 is to grip the rim of the can between two button-like protuberances on the underside of the can opener's head and lever the handle upwards. Hey presto, the lid - which until that moment may have looked as if it had not been cut at all - is lifted off!Working from the instructions supplied isn't easy; the popularity of the can opener may well grow once there are a few around and people can SHOW each other how it works. When I open cans, I often open as many as five at a time. (No, I don't live out of cans, but I do wish ordinary supermarkets sold larger cans of plum tomatoes.) At such times, I find using the basic hardware store can opener hard on my hands. By comparison, this one is a dream.Just one snag - the Zyliss Safety Can Opener won't open sardine and similar 'rounded-rectangle' cans. For the occasions when their pull ring pulls off without opening the can, I will still be keeping my old can opener in the kitchen drawer.

I have had the Zyliss safety can opener for about 2 years, so I know it pretty well now. I am not easily impressed and get very disappointed when products do not live up to their claims, having said that, I have nothing but praise for this product.Let's compare how can openers works. Other openers either cut inside the rim, with a blade that penetrates into the can contents or cuts beneath the rim on the outside of the can, again penetrating the can. Both of these methods tend to contaminate the cutters with food, necessitating cleaning of the cutters, ideally between cans as well as at the end of the task. How did Zyliss overcome these problems? Their opener neither cuts inside, nor outside below the rim,but outside around the centre of the rim.Why is this so different? First the cutter never comes into contact with the can contents, so a wipe over with a damp cloth is generally all the cleaning it needs. Secondly the lid is simply lifted off after the opener is removed, there are no sharp edges to cut you on either the lid or the can.Now we come to the bit I really like, because the lid comes off so cleanly, you can put it back on. Why would I want to do that? If I am cooking a meal in the oven and need to heat up some beans, peas, spaghetti etc, I give the tin a good shake, as the contents will have settled, take the label off, paper is a good insulator and I don't want that in the oven. Next I remove the lid, then put it back on, the whole thing goes in the oven for about 20 minutes and I have an instant oven pot, which just gets thrown away, not washed up after use. Remember; "Efficiency is educated laziness".The opener also works well on the rectangular corned beef cans, but does distort the straight edges a bit.

This is the second of these can openers I have bought. This one went to my Dad and although he at first had some difficulty, after I had explained how to use it, now he thinks it's great. It doesn't cut through the tin where we are used to can openers cutting through, instead it cuts around the ring where the metal is turned over to form the joint around the rim. It makes a very neat cut and what's more there are no sharp edges. Some thicker tins require two times around to open but then the top comes off easily.Something that I hadn't noticed before, which my Dad pointed out, is that there are two little fingers on the underside. By opening the handle again and closing these around the rim of the tin it grips it and you can pull the top off. This is very handy when in some instances you can't get a grip on the top, like when you have wet hands.I can thoroughly rcommend this can opener especially at this price. I have seen it advertised elsewhere for two or three times the price.

Takes a little getting used to but once mastered it's superb. At first, after using a more conventional opener I thought this Safety Opener was not working because unlike a normal Can Opener where once you have cut all around the rim, the lid separates from the base, however this Safety Opener requires that you remove the opener then grasp the lid and part it by hand, of course this goes against all common sense and human nature, thinking you'll cut yourself but there are no sharp edges so you won't. At first I managed to spill a little of the contents of various cans on my hand but now I've mastered it, it'works like a dream. The end result is a can and lid that you can wash by hand in the kitchen sink without fear of cutting yourself and place safely in the recycling.

UpdateNow 2020 and this opener is going strong.Great tool. No idea how it does open cans. But not failed yet. It leaves no sharp edges at all. But when i first use it it looked as if it hadn't worked but rereading instructions i was impressed on how well it worked.UpdateI melted my original one So brought a normal opener. After two cans I realised I had made a mistake. So bought another one off these. It took me ages to find it. My original one was over 4 years old and it still was far superior than a normal type one. If I could give this more stars I would.UpdateThe new can opener is still working wellUpdate now had this for 2 years still a great can opener

The first time I used this it was quite an embarrassment I tried to open a tin of Tuna in Olive oil. I clipped the opener on the can wound the handle which turned with almost no effort. I took the opener off the can and thought nothing had happened. Only when I passed the can to my wife and said that the can opener was useless did I realise when the olive oil went everywhere that it had actually cleanly cut the lid off, rolled the edges of the can so that the lid now lifted off the can easily and could actually be replaced on the can if I wanted to. Strangely it will not open tins of salmon. An excellent opener once I overcame my stupidity.

I have been looking for a tin opener that will just do what it promises. After a couple of outright fails, and one that fell apart after 2 uses, I found this one.Firstly with it's smooth action and easy one handed grip, I was impressed from the off!. Add to that the fact that the edges left behind are not sharp. Also the lid can be put back on quite snugly, allowing you to store those left over beans in the fridge, you have found yourself a winner.I have been using this opener for three months now and I am still well impressed by it. A bit more more expensive than the standard openers but worth it in my opinion.

After buying numerous can openers(electrical and mechanical)and finding that most of them did not open the can without a struggle or not at all, I decided to follow the reviews of this product on AMAZON and purchase this excellent item.I have only used the opener about 10 times so far and it is the easiest can opener I have ever used and amazingly it leaves no sharp edges on the can or the lid.IF this product maintains this level of operation I would have no hesitation in recommending this to other buyers seeking a quality can opener.

I thought I had a faulty opener, I was wrong.I tried it on a tomato can: the opener went all around the edge so effortlessly that I thought it hadn't cut anything. I pushed the lid inwards and it did not move: certainly a useless opener, I thought. Then, the revelation: the opener did not actually CUT but... kind of removed the lid from the can. The lid must in fact be pulled upwards (with the special tip of the opener itself), not pushed downwards. So smooth I did not even realize I opened the can!

I did find this opener a little difficult to use initially. I may have given it five stars if it would easily open ring pull type cans which I have difficulty with.(Even if I open them successfully there is always a bit of splattering) So far I do not rate it for this, but I like the way there are no sharp edges left and it would appear that the working part does not come into contact with the food to allow build up which needs to be cleaned off , as with any previous openers I have used.

Very prompt delivery,,, and YES,, it is fantastic, We also thought that it had done nothing after the first complete circle of the can.. it seemed as if nothing had happened... But, having read a previous review where the gent had said he turned to tin upside down and the contents were all over the floor... I thought,, hold on hear... so I carefully pulled the lid upwards,, and hey-presto it had been cleanly cut off,,, Amazing, and so easy.. to be well recommended.

Bought to replace my old style 'Magi-can' tin opener which lasted about 20yrs before the handle broke. We don't use a lot of tins actually but still need a tin opener if we're having tuna! I especially wanted a tin opener that would cut the folded edge of the tin on the outside leaving no sharp edges (like my old Magi-can did, but now appears to have been re-designed and leaves a sharp edge). This works perfectly and to me it was worth spending a little more

There are few things more annoying than repeatedly spending money on worthless kitchen gadgets, and most of us do this time and time again with such things as can openers, which we then go on to throw away and replace. Whilst this one is not cheap, it is sturdy and does the job very well. You can rest assured that it will not warp or break on you, and frankly that is worth the price in my opinion. Thoroughly recommended.

Sometimes you get cynical, when someone tells you their product can do this, can do that and improve your life. Well, this can do exactly what it says, I no longer have to worry about cutting myself and it operates with very little effort. I got the knack on the first attempt, well, I did read the instructions. It may cost a little more, but you won't have to search for a replacement, so you save money. It's a good'un.

Great. Doesn't leave sharp edges to cut yourself on. Doesn't get covered in gunk from inside the tin like other tin openers meaning you need to wash it. Which I don't know if I'm the only one, but I always found previous tin openers going a little rusty after a while. Would definitely recommend someone buying one. I bought this after using the one my parents had bought and was completely sold on it.
