This last week, I bought a Yamaha GL1 guitalele, having played around with a capo on my full-size classical guitar for a while, and enjoyed the higher-pitched sounds and the reduced finger-stretches. When it arrived, my first impression was of a well-made instrument, well inline with Yamaha quality, but I was somewhat disappointed with the reduced fingerboard width, at both the nut, and the bridge. There was sufficient space at both ends to increase the finger=space available, by inserting a new nut at the top, with wider spaced string grooves, and by filing slots in the bridge-saddle, to give more of a feel of a classical guitar. I replaced the strings with some decent "Aquila" guitar strings, and it now sounds great, well in tune, a good action.Overall, a nicely designed instrument, good value for money, a pity about the completely flat back, but it has a good sound, nothing like a good classical guitar with a capo on the fifth fret, but a very unique sound of it's own. It would be good to develop an instrument of this size, with a couple of extra bass strings, for low E and D.Simon Duckworth

This thing is an absolute bargain! I've met guitars four times the price that aren't as well finished and don't sound as good as this little beastie. It's worth replacing the strings with a decent classical set, but apart from that the only thing I can find wrong with it are a few not very noticeable smears of glue, but frankly for the price that's not really a worry. The tuners are good and the frets are nicely finished, no pointy fret ends in sight. It's also a shame it doesn't come with a pre-installed strap button, but having peered inside the thing I can see there is a tail block, so I'll probably just install one myself. It's not the easiest thing in the world to play due to it's size,so I wouldn't recommend this as a first instrument for an adult beginner, but it's lots of fun for guitarists wanting something small enough to carry around, or for steel string players who fancy dabbling in nylon without breaking the bank.

I am retired and have been playing the guitar practically every day since I was eleven years old.I decided to purchase the Yamaha Guitalele to give it a try. I have loved the little instruments ever since taking it out of the box. It is beside me on the settee always and it is played many times each day. It has come to the point where I now prefer to play the guitalele than my full size guitar. It’s so light and comfortable to play and can be quickly grabbed when there are adverts on the tv!.I have had the guitalele for a few years now and would say that it is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. Since buying the guitalele I have bought two different sizes of ukulele too,and very pleased with these also.

Dispatch and packing were perfect, the guitalele arrived needing some attention to make it play well. The factory set up ok, apart from the 3rd string which was not sitting in the nut slot as it was slightly too narrow. The nut got re cut, the frets and fretboard needed a light polish and oiling and the bridge was for my tastes about 5mm too tall, a little time sanding it down soon sorted this.Fixing this took about an hour and now I have a fantastic instrument that is hard to put down. The GL1 offers fantastic value for money, I would always expect to do some set up work on a guitar, even ones that cost 10 times the price of the GL1.Highly recommended.

Bit fiddly to tune up sometimes, intonation probably a bit out compared to my full sized guitars, but it just sounds lovely and begs to be played. Its the same as a normal guitar capped at the A fret 5.Great to have a noodle in the living room and you don't feel like your going to accidently knock someone's teeth out with it! Not for fat fingers though and may have to keep nails short on fret hand 'cus it's a bit of a squeeze. Saves me having to use my big guitars which are all capped at fret 5.Would not hesitate to get one for the kids if they show an interest. Much better than the cheap ukulele I bought one of them - that WAS a waste of time an money.

This little guy has really grown on me and has become my go to guitar while I am in the apartment. It has a light sound that doesn't travel, which means I can practice it all the time with no complaints from neighbors. It is just simple and fun and its size allows me to take it with me or play from anywhere. I love swinging in my hammock chair with my guitalele. A bonus is that my daughter started practicing a lot more. I think the size just feels right to her.Tuning is: ADGCEA like 5th fret on guitar, so all chords work, but in different key.Con: Strings don't stay in tune that well, so I will eventually switch them out and hope that improves.

Great little guitar.good sound for its size.but it's not loud so great for practise and play if you live in a flat.cuz however much you love your guitar playing your neighbor's won't be as enthusiastic if they can hear it all night long.tuned mine as a guitar eadgbe and sounds better than the recommended tuning.because the fretboard is only a foot long is great for hand eye coordination. But having said that the frets and strings are alot closer together so more Accurate finger work is needed.i also like the matte finish.very very happy with everything.fast delivery and well packed too.

I use these all the time for my work in schools and the community as they’re really easy to take on buses and trains (it’ll also fit in your hand luggage on a plane!) They’re well built and sound great. It also helps that the neck is a standard guitar width so you’re not thrown by where to put your fingers. Tuning is standard guitar but five frets higher. It’s surprisingly loud for such a small instrument. The included case isn’t going to protect it from much but is a useful inclusion. It’s also lots of fun. I’ve been playing these for years and love em!

I bought this to travel with and it's perfect. The tone is bright and pleasant. The action is easy. It's a very versatile instrument and you can take it almost anywhere with you. The case is quite adequate for the job. People usually comment on the lovely sound it produces (and that's not due to the quality of my playing!) I would have liked a little decoration around the sound-hole but that's just a personal foible. Guitar players should bear in mind that when played as a guitar it's the same as playing a guitar with a capo in the fifth fret.

Excellent. I needed a small guitar for noodling about on when on holidays or away with work, any situation where lugging along one of my Ibanez electrics just wasn’t practical. I have owned a few small travel guitars in the past but they have all suffered from fairly terrible playability. Not so here. This little gem of an instrument plays beautifully, whether finger style or picked. The action is perfect. It has a full, singing tone. Highly, highly recommended, and cheap enough to not worry about too much when on your travels!

I've been wanting to join in the latest ukelele craze but didn't fancy having to get my head around a whole new bunch of chord shapes. This is an easy way around it, although if like me you've been playing a 'normal' sized guitar for many years, then it can be quite difficult at first trying to get to grips with the small fret spaces and fairly narrow neck etc. but within a few days you do get the hang of it. For the money you're getting an instrument from a world class manufacturer with a gig bag thrown in at a silly price.

True to Yamaha's reputation for quality guitars at the right price, this is a wonderful instrument. The craftsmanship is just amazing and the sound produced is simply fantastic. I bought this as something to play on whilst on holiday as well as for lazy practice on the sofa. This is not a toy, it is a perfect little classical guitar and as such might well be a good starter instrument for a seriously interested child as well as an adults instrument.

As a guitarist I found the idea of a very small "guitar" appealing. The Yamaha is a nice thing to have in a guitar collection, but it does have limitations. The fret gaps make it difficult unless you have small, narrow fingers. Also, being tuned the same as a capo on the 5th fret of a guitar, makes it awkward to play tunes in the right key. Overall, I am happy with the Guitalele, but it will not get played very much.

Takes a bit of getting used to as it is so small and if you've got big fingers like me. However, with a bit of persistence it's possible to get quite a good sound out of this instrument. Tuned A to A so it's like playing a normal guitar with a capo on the fifth fret. With the strings it came with it took about 3 weeks for the tuning to settle down. I like it though, better than not having a guitar to play!

Got this as a gift for my partner, he plays the guitar but had always wanted to try a ukelele. Thought this would be a great bridge but it's a fantastic instrument in it's own right. Sound quality is great and easy to travel with. Chords are completely different so skills not completely transferable but fun to learn. You can play as a uke if you ignore two of the strings so it's practically a 2 in 1!
