3D printing do you say? Well, I've always been fascinated by 3D printing so being able to review this was a chance I could not pass up.The packaging for the printer was understandbly sturdy. It comes supplied with all the necessary components including a scraper. The instruction booklet (which was stapled together), was informative but lacking clarity in some areas. The printer itself was white - not the garish yellow/red scheme shown on the Amazon. The first thing to note is that the printer won't work with 32 bit operating systems. This could be deal breaker for some. The XYZ web site insists that you register first before downloading the software which I can't understand. Downloads exist for Window (7,8 and 10), Mac and Linux.Assembling the printer was a bit awkward. The 'clamps' inside the printer resulted in a finger cut as you really need some force to prise them out. Assembling the filament wheel was annoying though as I wasn't too sure which way to place the spool ring. The XYZ software needs to be downloaded and installed before the printer is used. First thing to do is to load the filament into the extruder head. This happens very slowly. The software is a bit clunky and slow to respond at times. The viewing options aren't that extensive. The online gallery has some templates but to be honest with you, there isn't really anything special on there. The software does have auto-levelling and calibration facilities as well.I designed my own little plaque that I built with the software. The printer estimated a time of 22 minutes along with 1m of plastic being used. The quality was better than I had expected. Compared to 3D printers from a couple of years ago, progress has marched on. I think that for designing some toys and trinket-like items, I don't think you need anything larger. The big minus point is the cost of a filament wheel - £23 last time I checked. Can't see myself using the printer tha that often. XYZ are following the established inkjet printer manufacturers by charging very high prices for consumables. My overall opinion is that this 3D printer would keep kids and adults occupied but the boredom will start once you realise you have to build 3D models yourself if the available templates don't match your needs. There are plenty of tutorials though.Could I really recommend this? For a primary school, yes. For personal use, I couldn't really justify it unless I was a prototype designed in which case this printer would be an absolute steal.

The printer instructions are supplied as a badly photocopied set of pages that only contain minimum information, barely enough to get it basically setup. There are some videos that give more information if you search online. The instructions tell you to download xyzware from the website. Firstly you need to go through a registration process that took numerous attempts before it worked. When you get in and try to download the xyzware it does not download. I had to use xyzmaker and xyzprint. The maker software is rubbish. Very basic and transferring your model into xyzprint after struggling to create it destroys it. Luckily I have AutoCad so can create models properly with that.STL files appear to transfer okYou only get three pieces of masking tape for the print bed and they soon get damaged. Need Pritt Stick type glue on the tape to help keep the print from moving about. Large area prints do not stick well and end up banana shaped.I now use double sided tape rather than the masking tape - works better but large items still tend to curl at the edges so a flat object will not be flatThere are plenty of settings to fiddle with in xyzprint but it is proving tricky to get any consistency between printsI think the printer itself seems ok but is let down by the softwareIt is however quite fun watching an object print out like a very very slow Star Trek replicator. Any sizeable object will take hours to print. The slicing part of the xyzprint software can take an hour or more if you choose detailed settings

As far as I can see, apart from the primary school colours this is identical to the more expensive WiFi version. Having used it for a couple of weeks I have realised that I never would have connected via WiFi anyway as prints take anything from an hour or so to 12 hours or more. My home WiFi is just not that stable that I would risk it. In addition while I could print by WiFi from my iPad, I would never want my iPad connected and running this for hours at a time. I connect to a 2010 Mac Mini via a USB print cable and it does a brilliant job. I am sure spending £300 to £500 will get you a better printer but if you want a bit of fun and the ability to print things like spare plastic clips and springs for shower cubicles, trim bits for classic cars and boats, floating glasses cases and loads of useful bits and pieces, this is pretty good ie don’t think you can only make plastic dinosaurs and kids toys. Apparently you no longer have to use XYZ’s filament but I have not tried anyone else’s yet and don’t know how / if you can override the cable count etc if you do use an alternative. Also I do not want to invalidate the warranty. The free software is pretty good, no doubt there is much better available but it does work pretty well. So far I have one all the design work using XYZ Maker on an iPad Pro 10.5 and all the printing via the XYZ software on a Mac Mini 2010. I think this is brilliant value for money and a lot of fun

The XYZ Printing da Vinci miniMaker 3D printer is a fun, entry level 3D printer. It is not easy to set up and use however, even for someone with considerable technological ability. Also, some attempts to print proved beyond its capabilities, for example, the International Space Station model proved way beyond what is possible! To be fair, if you go online and choose some of the 3D designs found there you should be okay, the ISS was a design of our own.The production plate is also very small so you can only make equally small items, which may be just as well given the cost of the filament. It did produce a miniaturised version of a stationery drawer insert (again designed by said student)and looks exactly like a small blue plastic version of the original.I’m pleased to say the printer I got was not the primary coloured version shown on the Amazon picture. I would prefer white or black filament rather than bright blue though.Overall it’s nice to own a 3D printer and it’s good to have the chance to practice and play around but I probably wouldn’t buy this unless I had a very good need to produce something of a small, simple design.

Came almost fully assembled and semi enclosed, only had to connect the filament tube and feed the filament. Comes with instructions but you can scan the Qr code and download them and access the xyz website. I found watching the instructional video more useful however. Very easy to set up and to use. Comes with tools and a free spool of filaments (mine was yellow) you can use their site or use many other sites to source objects to print or create your own with XYZware or any other slicer program. Has a small build volume of 150mmx150mmx150mm which is perfect for me as I mostly want to print doll sized things. The only downsides are that you are restricted to using the nfc chipped filament fromxyzprinting which not only are a little pricey but less on a spool than 3rd party filaments average 600g for xyz filaments where 3rd party is average 1kg. The selection of colours is a little lacking aswell but you can widen your choice if you use the PETG filament ranges too(which prints amazing) and that the print time estimates are not accurate at all.So far I’ve only used xyzprinting PLA & PETG and the Printed quality is consistent for both

I've discovered there is a lot to learn when starting out with 3D printing and this is the perfect device to learn with. It's very forgiving and easy to maintain and calibrates and levels itself. Once I realised that a little Pritt Stick on the bed paper for each new print worked wonders, I was off and away. I've now printed over 30 hours with the XYZ and am still delighted. It'll be a few months yet until I need to upgrade. The bundled software is a bit "noddy", but I think that's just what you need (well I do), when starting from scratch.

This is a great little printer perfect for small items and trinkets the out of box quality is amazing hardly any artifacting or visual problems. its great at small overhangs at a low speed and gives a very very good print only problem however is that the instructions are not very clear and better to watch a video as the instructions show nothing of the software you need to download and also that is happened to go down in price after I brought it but it happens. Overall great printer

My 14 year old absolutely loves this and so far very user friendly, we haven’t had to do any maintenance yet and I presume that’s where we might find problems but not as yet

Good printer , only downfall is you can't change the nozzle, have to buy the whole unit . Be just as cheap to buy the whole printer.
