Hey folks Today we are going to be looking at something which has finally toppled a piece of Kit i have been using since 2004…That is of course my Trusty Microsoft Intellimouse.. Perhaps the finest feeling mouse I had ever came across and despite getting the occasional urge to replace it with fancier, gaming focused and newer mice, I always found myself plugging it back in and slumping back into my simple comfort zone. That is until now. Over the last month I have been using this as a daily driver in both the office and at home - The 5 button XTRFY M1 along with a rather nice … and rather large XTRFY XGP1 “Extra Large” Mousemat. And it's a bit of a bittersweet moment for me being the first time in 14 years that I just do not want to go back to either the intellimouse, nor any of my other gaming focused mice that I’ve bought on a whim.So if you’ve never really heard of the XTRFY M1 then i'll give you a little history lesson, The story of the M1 stretches all the way back to 2014, when the e-sports team, Ninjas in Pyjamas , started creating their own gaming gear under the XTRFY brand. The M1 is the result of - in their words - an uncompromising process to find the perfect shape, grip and feel, and is designed, tested and fine-tuned by the pro gamers themselves.“After a long process, I’m so excited that the M1 is finally here. We’ve put our hearts into making it just right. To me, this is the perfect mouse”, says Adam “friberg” Friberg, professional CS:GO player. On the inside, the uniquely shaped mouse body is equipped with well-proven components only, carefully selected by the pros.“The M1 is built with consistently high-performing components that aren’t new to the game. On the highest level of esports, reliability is key”, says Erik Jensen, CTO at Xtrfy.“We’ve been working on the M1 for a long time and this mouse has laid the foundation for the material selection in our two previous mice, the M2 and the M3. We’ve gone through an extensive process of designing and redesigning to make every angle of the M1 feel 100 % right, with the goal of not releasing it until it’s perfect. Now it’s finally here, and we can’t wait to make it available to all gamers”, says Erik Jensen. So what we have is kit used by pros and developed with their input, sounds like a recipe for a nice piece of kit… and it absolutely is.The M1 is using the tried and trusted Pixart PMW 3310 with selectable CPI settings of 400 / 800 / 1600 / 3200 and 4000 with polling rate settings of 125Hz, 500Hz and 1000Hz and a 1ms response time so finding settings suitable to your gaming style and the game you are playing is easyNow im by not exactly what you would call a pro gamer..rocking the tried and trusted intellimouse with its 400 DPI sensor so what does the M1 actually offer someone like me?Well immediately the responsiveness, speed and accuracy at the higher settings was like night and day with the M1 and even compared to my other “budget gaming mouse” which lists a CPI max of 3200 the difference is huge, I think the word I’m looking for is consistency. The Omron switches feel the same with every click and the rubber surface on top feels as comfortable in my hand as the scroll wheel feels tactile. The M1 comes with a very nice braided cable in the NIP yellow and black theme and the 2m length is easily allows you to locate your mouse where you want.Lookswise the M1 eschews the usual trend of addressable RGB which might be turn off for some but the Yellow and Black colour scheme and the integrated yellow LED’s look great. The standard version has the XTRFY logo illuminated on top while the second version features the NiP team logo, again illuminated. Both look really nice with there being just the ammount of spread of light on the logo meaning no glaring bright spots and with the 2 options being available, you can still enjoy the M1 even if you don’t want the NiP branding. The brightness is adjustable by simply pressing and holding the CPI button on the underside of the mouse and it will cycle through the brightness options, staying for a longer time on the brightest to let you know you are at the highest value. On the topic of the underside, here you will find the switches for the polling rate and the CPIThe Polling rate switch allows you to adjust the response time of your mouse. A higher Polling rate means that your mouse will report its position to the computer more often. 1000 Hz Polling rate= position updated 1000 times every second. On the M1, you can switch between 125, 500 and 1000 Hz. A high value will improve precision, but also use more CPU resources although with any modern processor that's not going to have any real impact while gaming. The CPI button enables you to adjust your mouse sensitivity on the fly. By pressing the button, you can easily switch between 400 (red), 800 (green), 1600 (blue), 3200 (violet) and 4000 (turquoise) CPI. The higher the CPI setting, the farther the cursor on your screen will move when you move the mouse.By switching surface mode on the mouse, you can easily optimize the sensor for soft (cloth) or hard (plastic) mouse pads. The right surface mode will minimize the mouse’s lift-off distance to approximately 1.5 mm. Surface mode 1 (standard) = suitable for most cloth mousepads. Surface mode 2 = suitable for most plastic mouse pads. To switch surface mode, press and hold down the left and right mouse buttons and the scroll wheel for 5 seconds. The mouse will then blink once when it’s in surface mode 1, and twice when it’s in surface mode 2. I’ve been using Surface mode 1 on my XGP1 mouse pad.So does all that make a difference? Well from my experience yes, it absolutely has. Now i'm not going to sit here and say buy this and you will be as good as a pro, far from it, but having competitive, properly designed peripherals did see me playing better. I'll use battlefield one as the example. At best I was a 1:1 KDR player more often than not i'm hovering around 0.8. Since using the M1 i’ve seen that score gradually creep up and up to the point where I’m regularly getting ending higher than 1:1. The best part is though that I now know that I can no longer blame anything other than my ability as I certainly have the tools at my disposal..On the XGP1 mouse pad the mouse moves incredibly freely, much more so than on the £5 ebay special I had previously been using, looks great and can comfortably fit my keyboard and mouse.Overall my time with the M1 has been great, I love the feeling of it, the quality and feel of the mouse are top notch and it's always nice to find something that’s a little different that then slew of gamer centric mice you can see in every “it’s not much but its mine” threads on reddit. So would I recommend it? Absolutely. If like me your new to “pro” focused peripherals and just want something you know will perform great while not being overly complicated or flashy the M1 ticks all those boxes. The fact that its so well built with high quality materials is just an added bonus for something that costs between £50 and £60 here in the UK.Sure I’m a long way off being one of those ninjas in pyjamas… but as long as the m1 feels as great as it does and my KDR keeps creeping up, i'm a happy camper….. Actually campers probably the wrong word to use there but you get the drift!
