One of the problems with cantilever brakes is getting the pressure of the two return springs equalised, so that both brake shoes pull away from the rims by the same amount after releasing the brakes. Otherwise, you get one shoe not backing off properly, and dragging on the rim while you're cycling. With my old brakes, I could adjust the back-tension of each arm to a certain extent by changing the insertion position of the spring end in the mounting (you have a choice of 3 holes). But often this adjustment wasn't fine enough. These brakes, however, have a little screw on one of the arms which allows the back tension to be fine-tuned. Another nice feature is that the clamp bolt for the saddle wire is at the top of the arm,so it's easier to adjust the length of the wire. My new brakes were easy to install, and after cleaning & greasing the pivots, the arms moved back & forth smoothly. I didn't use the supplied hangers, as my old ones were already attached to the cables & adjusted properly. Aligning the shoes is always a bit of a pain, and these were no better or worse than any others I've fitted. The only complaint I have is that the new supplied Promax for Alloy brake shoes aren't quite as grippy as my old Clarks ones. They didn't seem to be getting any better after a couple of days, so I re-fitted my old ones, and the brakes are much more positive now. Also, I think these brakes are a little expensive- although I can see that they are really top quality units, with a beautiful satin black finish, so they're probably worth the extra cost.Read full review...
