Apart from the last few weeks, when I’ve been experimenting with the Hydro 3, (and even, not very successfully, with an electric shaver) I’ve been shaving with the Hydro 5 for over 3 years. Initially I was not that impressed by the 5-bladed, and thus big-headed, Hydro 5, writing in the review:“Early days, I know, and I may update this review in the light of more experience, but I find it hard not to think that this is an over-complex, over-engineered and over-sized product that is trying too hard to offer something new. Newer is not always better. I suspect that when this blade wears out I'll revert to a simpler product…”But it grew on me. Mostly I shaved with the version with the vibrating mechanism (The Hydro 5 Power Select version, same razor blade heads), but when that stopped working it took me a while to get around to replacing it. I’m not sure it really makes that much of a difference, and this one, the standard razor, weighs less and has a slimmer, more pleasant feeling handle. When I tried the new Hydro 3, I was impressed with just how much more smoothly the razor glides over my skin. WS have redesigned the gel dispensing system, and this version of the Hydro 5 seems to have the new technology too: there are fewer, wider gel “reservoirs” so more lubricating gel is presented to your face. The effect is that it is a bit smoother. However, perhaps because there are still five blades rather than three, the improvement in smoothness was less striking, and I think that I might actually prefer the smaller Hydro 3. Frankly, while I suppose that 5 blades might be better than three, this bigger head is less manoeuvrable. You have to push back – and therefore lose the benefit of – the bit with the lubricating gel to shave your moustache or to trim sideburns. So, while this new head is an improvement over its predecessor, it is less clearly better than the Hydro 3. In the long run the 3 will presumably be a little cheaper, although I can’t see a clear pattern in the costs at the moment – there is some introductory pricing going on, I think. Perhaps the difference will not be that great. So, while the Hydro 5 is a very good razor, I admit that I may actually prefer the 3 – it’s a close run thing.

For many years now I have been using Gillette products, including razors and shaving foam. With that in mind I can but compare this product against what I have been using to date. The specific Gillette Fusion razor that I've been using for some time being a very similar beast to the Wilkinsons Sword Hydro 5, it also having 5 blades and a similar head. Having been very satisfied with the Gillette razor it will take a very good razor to persuade me to change. Along comes the Hydro 5 from Wilkinson. My thoughts? My initial impression of the Hydro 5 razor was that it felt a little more "plasticky" and less solid than the equivalent Gillette Fusion product. That said,I found the Hydro 5 razor felt good in the hand with a well-balanced handle. The more I used it the more I liked it.The five blades of the Hydro 5 easily and smoothly glide over your face. With a fresh blade, there is no irritation and virtually no catching on stubble. My stubble being considerable and thick. No razor burn here either. I understand that the Hydro 5 has a water-activated gel, including aloe vera, which takes the place of ordinary lubricating strips, with the gel allegedly lasting twice as long. A welcome addition for those with sensitive skin. It certainly worked for me.The five blades of the Hydro 5 appear to be spaced slightly wider apart than the competition but still provide an equally close shave. Their spacing also appears to assist in cleaning the blades after each shave. A quick rinse being sufficient to wash away all shaving residue. Far easier than with any other razor blades I've used.Which do I prefer between the Gillette and Wilkinson? I like them both and have no hesitation in recommending the Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5. The Gillette blades have always lasted a considerable time despite daily use upon thick stubble. Only time will tell how the Hydro 5 fares on this issue. After a week's use the blades still appear to be as good as new and every shave has been as close as the first. Thanks for listening.

Over the past year I have received two new shaving systems---Wilkinson and Gillette. The latter was the first to arrive and I used it quite successfully for several months.Replacement blades were/are expensive and I used the freebie blades to destruction! When the Wilkinson system arrived I started to use it.Initially I found the flexibility an issue, but I soon found the advantages of the system bending rather than my face being lacerated. The cutting edge was/is superb, and the movable strip on the blade edge is excellent at shaving around nose area and getting a good edge on sideboards.I prefer this entire system.Replacement blades are still expensive, and I do have my own little sharpening gadget (in rubber) to try and make the blades last longer. As mentioned I really like the Wilkinson system, but like all systems you are tied to a manufacturer. In effect they have a monopoly on that system and its price, which can be expensive.I grew up with an ordinary razor blade that would fit into any razor.Modern manufacturers have gone way beyond this and can now control their own market. As always it is the final consumer who pays the price. So my advice would be to be flexible to new systems when available, especially where there are special offers/freebies.But certainly the Wilkinson system is the best one that I have seen.Read full review...

I prefer the Wilkinson Sword Hydro series over the Gillette ones, I find them easier to handle, cut just as good, last longer, are cheaper, blades are wider and easier to clean and the gel is a lot better. This one is no exception.Cutting is straightforward. It leaves a very smooth skin afterwards, there is no tug and pulling on the hairs and after the shave, there was no sign of any red marks whatsoever. As with all Hydro blades but more so with this, the first few times you use them a lot of the gel is dispensed. So much so that it feels that there is a slime on your skin. Yes, the razor glides over it very easily, but when washing my face afterwards, it came off in strands off my skin. After a few times, it settles down to a normal lubrication. Don’t let this put you off, as you know the gel is working and is doing its job.The one thing I do not like, as with all manufacturers of these types of blades, is that a new feature results in an ever increasing price. That said, these are still cheaper than Fusion blades and last longer in my opinion. If you have sensitive skin, then I have found this is the best blade so far. If you do not have sensitive skin, the standard blades would do just as good for cutting, but this is far better for the gel.

These razor blades are fantastic.Anyone who prefers or likes a wet shave should try these. The Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 refill 4 pack of replacement blades for Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Razor.Key revolutionary technologies are:These blades have an advanced Hydrating Gel ReservoirPrepare to be amazed as water interacts with the solid lubricant to create a moisturising gel that hydrates the skin while you shave. The patented reservoir adds moisture with every stroke to reduce irritation and lasts up to twice as long as other ordinary lubricating strips. These blades are ultra Glide Blades with Skin GuardsWhen it comes to shaving, skin irritation is the number one problem as skin can get trapped between blades causing it to become uncomfortable and irritated. Thanks to pioneering blade technology, HYDRO‘s Ultra Glide Blades feature protecting Skin Guards to smooth the skin’s surface, preventing it from getting caught between blades thus considerably reducing the risk of skin irritation. These blades are so good. You get a very good shave every time.In my opinion one blade lasts for ages.I like this product.Recommended

Like many men, my husband alternates wet shaves with an electric shaver. He says that wet shaves are much closer and so was pleased to receive this pack of four Hydro 5 Sensitive Wilkinson Sword Blades. We also received a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Sensitive handle/razor for review purposes, which was appreciated, to enable these blades to be properly tested. The blades are designed for Sensitive Skin and the water activates a hydrating gel reservoir, which lubricates the skin while shaving, with Aloe Vera to reduce irritation and redness. You receive four blades in this pack, which are obviously designed to be used with the razor. The blades themselves do give a close and comfortable shave and the blades have skin guards to help smooth the skin’s surface, preventing it from getting caught between the blades and reducing irritation or nicks. There is also a ‘flip trimmer’ whereby the Gel Reservoir flips back using your thumb to expose the blades to trim really close easily. The hydrating gel is a great idea and the razor blades give a close shave without irritating the skin.

The claims made for this product in the product description are absolutely true, the moisturizer soapy reservoir lasts as expected and does help with sensitive skin and skin care generally.I have shaved using the razors when I have had a morning, day's, two and three day's growth and been satisfied with the performance of the razors on each occasion, if you are shaving with longer beard growth then the razors will wear more quickly, although I find that drying them correctly afterwards and not leaving them wet on the basin extends the life a little too which is important given how expensive these refills can be.In the past I have said that I am not sure I agree with the thinking about increasing the number of blades and I pretty much feel the same way about that,it increases the bulk of the razor set head and that in turn makes shaving on all contours of the face a bit of a job. I think that the Gillette power ball is the best in this respect but that this razor and headset is the best for skin care and sensitive skin.

These are decent enough razors and, when fitted into the Hydro 5 handle make a good piece of shaving kit.The Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 handle/blade combo has a nice design, is comfortable to hold with its cushion gripped, rubberised handle and has a reasonabledegree of weightiness to it. The blades click into place on the handle with ease and are just as easy to replace. The actual head has a good degree of flexibility and generally forms to the shape of your face quite well but I did find a tendency for the blades to catch on stubble more than a day old.The problem that I do find with all of these multi-bladed razors is that the more blades they build into a head, the more time consuming it becomes to clean them out properly after a shave and also, for me, the use of shaving oil is far more effective at reducing irritation than lubricating strips or reservoirs.Overall, this is a good enough product but I'm afraid that my personal preference is for a rival brand and that wins out on this occasion.

I'm sometimes a bearded chap so my use of a razor tends to go in phases, and historically I've been a Gillette man. However, I do have several friends who swear that Wilkinson Sword razors are better, so I was pleased to give these a go.The big selling point with the Hydro 5 is that there is gel either side of the cutting blades, which is meant to give a closer and more comfortable shave. I am prone to quite bad shaving rash if I shave too quickly or don't use enough lubrication whilst shaving, so these sounded as if they were ideal for me. After the first shave, I can see that the Hydro 5 is indeed something pretty good. Shaving was smooth, quick, and there was no need to go over any part of my face twice, impressively - and, most importantly, no shaving rash at all! I always get some sort of rash, so this was unexpected. It's early days with these razor blades, but so far I'm impressed. Recommended - and even better then the Hydro 3, which I have also just tried.

It's almost impossible to review these blades without also reviewing the razor they're attached to, both of which my husband is very pleased with. He doesn't have sensitive skin, per se, but it never hurts to treat things as gently as possible, especially when performing such a potentially damaging act as shaving.Having previously used a Gillette Mach 3 razor, he reports that the move up to five blades definitely resulted in a much closer and smoother shave. The sensitive lubrication strip worked very well, and he was impressed by the fact that it can be flipped out of the way when tackling tighter or more awkward spots. (Doing so also stops the head from pivoting, which it does when the strip is in its standard operating position.) Attaching and detaching the blades also seems simple and straightforward. All in all, he's very impressed with the quality of the blades and the shave they achieve.

These are good quality blades giving a smooth comfortable shave. The section with the lubricant can be folded back to give you better access to difficult areas. This feature is the same as their cheaper cousin. The new feature is the improved lubricant but I don't find the improvement enough to justify the higher price. What matters to me is the quality of the blades and how long they last. I compared these, the previous Hydro and the Gillette Proglide and I don't find much difference. There is one thing that will make more difference to your shaving than any razor. Bristle softens if it is soaked in water for 5 minutes. Shave after showering or washing your hair, taking care not to let your face dry and a cheap blade will feel like an expensive one. This works much better than shaving cream and will save you time as well as money.

I am 58 and for over 20 years, I have been shaving with Gillette Fusion. I started off with a Christmas Present from my daughter with a Gillette Mach 3 and I went up to the Fusion Proglide powered with a battery. I recently bought myself a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 razor with one blade. I tested it out and I was hooked. Then I bought the Power razor then a Sensitive one. Now I have 1 power razor, 2 sensitive and 2 plain Hydro 5 (one is a Transformers edition). I only wish I had gone with Wilkinson Sword years ago. It is a smoother shave, I dont get a rash now like I did with the Gillette. I look forward to a shave now and my wiskers dont grow quick enough. I have also started to try out different soaps /creams. Looking forward to trying them out as well. I whole heartedly would recommend Wilkinson Sword to anyone.Read full review...

The Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 range of Razor Blades are pretty good. I like to allow my bristles grow for a few days before shaving, in order to get a good close shave. The 5-blade variant is good - although I don't have a problem with dual or triple blade razors. I am prone to a bit of razor burn, but I find that using a good quality shaving soap (definitely not foam from a can however) alleviates the issue, and also using an Alum Block afterwards helps too.. The 5 blades last a good few shaves for me, but ultimately the big stumbling block with these is that they aren't cheap. These are aimed at those with Sensitive Skin, and I do count myself in that group. Mind you,I cannot get away with disposable razors - not enough weight. So, a recommendation for this variant on an age-old theme - price will always be an issue, though.

Provided for free to submit a fair and honest review.First off I was only expecting a case of 4 blades. However the advert said 5 and so I got a case of 4 AND a new handle with a blade already fitted. So that was a bonus.I normally use an old fashioned cutthroat razor or a twin blade. I do this because I find it given me better accuracy and control. So I found using this very difficult and vague. It also comes with little gel reservoir's that when one of them empties they recommend you change the blade. After 4 shaves it's sill good to go.However this isn't for me this razor. So why the 5 stars? Well my wife immediately adopted it for her legs and she was very happy.Whereas I need more detail and control for my beard and side burns, she doesn't so it suited her perfectly.

I have owned and used a Hydro 5 since it was first launched in the UK and wasn't really expecting much of an improvement on an already superlatively close and drag-free shave but the new version is noticeably more slick across the skin. It does take a moment for the effect to start working but once it does the glide is really impressive. I suffer from razor burn very easily and these are now my go-to blades if I want to be sure of avoiding nicks and rash when I have to shave quickly. They aren't cheap but I get many shaves before needing to replace these and have no hesitation in recommending them.Their only drawback is that due to the size of the head they aren't the most agile blade but with a little practice they don't miss anything out.
