Unless you start edging into the "artisan" razor market you've pretty much got a wet-shave choice these days between Wilkinson Sword and Gillette, each with their promise of multiple uber-blades and razors so sharp you could slice actual air molecules into their component chemical compounds with them. Personally I've always bought Gillette for no other reason than the first time I made the choice they were on offer, and I've stuck with them ever since with no complaints. I am though, utterly bamboozled with the available ranges from both manufacturers. I just want a close, wet shave for a price that won't break the bank with blades that last long enough to justify their cost.I don't want to wade through claim and counter claim to find them. I don't want to debate whether 4 blades is lesser than 5, I have enough other things to debate in life as it is. Shaving should be simple. Enough! To that end, I've tried these Hydro 5 sense blades and razor now and they do tick those important boxes. They're quite heftily sized handles, but not heavy, instead being nicely weighted and rubber-gripped, so easy to control even when wet. The blade attaches in the normal click in way and in, use they provide a simple, close and in my experience, even shave. The moisture release system is well implemented and the dispenser moves out of the way so you can get to awkward bits without it getting in the way. I've noticed that there is more movement with these blades than my Gillette ones, meaning the shaver really does follow the contour of my face that little bit closer I think, thanks in no small part to the pivoted system in the handle, but we're talking almost-unnoticeable millimetres here, nothing major. Longevity-wise they're comparable with my usual blades. So, yes, this is an excellent wet-shave razor which is different in several ways from the Gillette offerings but which works just as well. I can't deduct any stars as it does what it says and does it well. When it comes to razors though are the differences between the two major brands really worth getting interested in or worked up about? Of course not. Buy what works for you, what you can regularly afford and what lasts you the longest. You won't be missing out on much one way or another.

I have been using wet and dry shaving systems for some 50 years now and the market continues to split into the mainly dry (electric) - which give an adequate but not ultimate shave - and the wet single/multi blade systems – either throw away or more sophisticated replacement blade which can give that ultimate shave .The prices have advance significantly recently so what I look for is a good ( smooth as a babies backside ) shave and a blade that lasts a decent time ( at least 2-3 weeks IMHO). All blades blunt with time – you will never get the completely same effect as the old cutthroat razor carefully honed before EACH use but safety razors now come very close. The marketing spiel for all the main brands seem to claim the benefits of multi blade ,internal lubrication, flexible head structures to make removing that stubble that much easier . This system seemed to be extremely easy to use and easily reached all of the facial surfaces. So how did this shape up on a first shave and what did it feel like and what did the ultimate test - “er indoors” think of it?Initial results were extremely promising but the longer term results will be critical. My impression was that it performed as well ( if not better) than another leading brand – great feel after shaving ( the menthol gel cooling effect?).Value for money – your choice – I think all the new systems are somewhat overpriced – particularly the replacement blades but that will have to be judged against how long each blade lasts and how well / long they perform. Check out the out the Amazon prices and make your choice. Initial impressions 5 star but will update according to how long each blade lasts.

I tend to alternate between Gillette and Wilkinson Sword for my razors and I must admit to have gravitated more towards Gillette recently, so this was a good opportunity to reacquaint myself with a Wilkinson Sword offering.Firstly, a minor quibble. Packaging/marketing. Not every man is a petrol head who won't look at a product without the packaging being dressed-up in automotive terminology. So "auto adjust (based on how you shave)" and "Shock absorb technology" are a little wasted on me. If my shaving requires shock absorbers, there's clearly something amiss with my technique.Having fought my way in through the packaging (Terry Wogan once described "breaking and entering" a toothbrush blister pack),the razor itself feels good in the hand with a standard type rubberized grip and the head of the razor does look a bit larger and clunkier than usual, to accommodate its five blades and 7 hydro-glide menthol gel pools (I kid you not). How does it feel in use? Well, very nice. A crisp, clean, easy shave through the thickest stubble and those habitués of the other razors in the Hydro range will be familiar with the very useful flip trimmer which allows the lubristrip head of the razor to be folded back to allow you to get to that region just below the nostrils on the upper lip for any straggling bristles. Nice!I haven't yet priced up the refill blades, but in terms of the razor itself - 10/10 - easy to use, handles ergonomically and does its stuff.

While still classed as a Hydro 5, the Sense is very different to my usual Hydro 5 groomer which has quite a chunky handle. The Sense is lightweight yet still has a bit of weight to the handle with rubber grips strategically placed. The blade head has lots of flexibility forward and back to adapt to the contours of the face but does lack movement to the sides (apart from the give in the clasp). The main difference with this handle is the locking system on the handle head giving additional flexibility. I did worry this would mean it flopped about but it still provides resistance even when unlocked so you’re not having to add even more pressure. It will only lock in its resting position though so you can’t push it back and lock it.The blade head gives a good close shave although I didn’t feel the ‘hydrating pools’ worked quick enough to begin with but I didn’t have any irritation. With their already being so much flexibility in the blade head though is that extra movement really required? No I don’t think so – especially not on a facial razor but I can see how it would be useful for women shaving legs etc where there are harder to reach areas. I do like it and I will continue to use it but it’s a bit expensive for that one feature.

OK as a lady I had to ask my other half to use this shaver and he did it willingly though he prefers the convenience of an electric shaver but maintains to get a full close shave, a wet shave is "the way" to go.The shaver itself was comfortable to hold and it did work well and quickly. My man said he used it two days in a row which is normal for him as he has a very thick beard and to keep it under control needs to shave at least once a day but I have seen him having to shave twice as he hates having any growth on his facial area.Using this razor caused no irritation but he said a few times he had to repeatedly go over his chin twice as the blade did not fit on his skin, therefore, patches of beard was missed. But he did say he was able to get a good close shave quickly and easily. And of course, I had to have a feel to make sure he did it right! and I too was very happy with the results. The shaver did work well and he would buy it again if the price came down, for what it was at the present time is a bit expensive but as far as he is concerned it is a shaver made to a top quality design.

I am very impressed with the cool, close and comfortable shave the Hydro 5 provides. I have always preferred a wet shave. Although I own and have tried several electric shavers, I have never really found their shaving results satisfactory. The type of shaving technology offered by the Hydro 5 is completely new to me and I find it particularly pleasing. It seems less fussy and messy. I use it with a little shave oil which enhances the results. I also like the flip trimmer feature as, sporting a beard, it allows for very precise shaping. While I tried Wilkinson Sword blades when I first started shaving many years ago, my default choice became those made by Gillette. This trial has clearly changed my opinion. As well as the blades, I really like the way the razor handles. I find the grip very secure when wet and like the flexibility of the locking facility which I switch off and on to ensure I get the best possible overall shave. The blades are not cheap, but they are excellent, made to last and should prove good value.

The arms race between Gilette and Wikinson Sword was brilliantly summed up by a Viz 'Top Tip' which ran something like: "Wilkinson Sword, leapfrog Gilette's inevitable 6 bladed response to your 5 bladed razor by starting development now on a 7 bladed razor".I myself have stuck with Gilette Mach 3 for many years. I did try a Gilette Fusion a few years back but wasn't overly impressed and saw no reason to change. This however is a different kettle of fish. I'm thoroughly impressed by the smoothness and closeness of the shave given by this model, and also the skin irritation is far less, and the skin doesn't look as irritated.I would switch in a flash if it wasn't for the fact that the blades for this are more than twice as expensive as Mach 3 ones (which themselves are not cheap). As it is I'll have to evaluate how long the blades last in comparison and how the quality of the shave deteriorates relative to Mach 3 before giving any consideration to such a move.

We were very impressed with this razor, we've used the Hydro range before and the latest edition didn't disappoint. For my partner, sensitivity is the most important thing while shaving, he's very prone to stubble rash but he's had no irritation with the gel that is included in the shaving head, he didn't notice it particularly by feel and using it but it was very gentle yet a very close shave and the head is very manoeuvrable even in difficult places. The price is personally what I'd expect for a razor and 4 blades and you save £8 than if you buy them separately as the razor is currently £12 on its own and the blades are £14 for a pack of 4.Although you can buy an older model Hydro range for£14 with 5 blades which we've tried and works well too so it's down to personal taste and preference but this is a very effective range of razors and they've never let us down.

Top quality blades, with a new design of handle, and used by my adult son, who returned to these after using a rival brand and electric razors for years, He was quite impressed, but nor so much with the RRP.. No wonder beards have become popular, He experienced a close and fairly comfortable shave, and was quite happy to use them, but won't be returning,The 'hydrating gel pools' have menthol that provides a stinging sensation at the end of the shave, in his experience, the good point was the closeness of the shave. The gel isn't a substitute for shaving products - he used shaving soap - but an addition. He found that he didn't have to scrape away repeatedly at the same area. The flip switch for the trimmer was slightly fiddly, but so is any switch with damp hands. For a manual razor, it packs a lot of novelty, but also at a price.

As a long time Gillette Proglide user I thought I was using the best wet shaver around but I was wrong.I decided to try the Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 and to my surprise this is yet a level up on the Gillette. The Shave is very close and I do not get any painful red neck after the shave. There are different way you can use this blade by pulling back the yellow lubrication strip to get to precision shaving of locks and under nose. While it work well in this department, the Gillette was better at getting to those tricky places.Im using the same blade 5 weeks later and its still as good when I first used it. Really really impressed with these blades so very happy with my purchase.I won't be moving back to Gillette anytime soon!!

I finally made the move from Gillette Mach 3 to Wilkinson Sword Hydro. I used the Mach 3 for over 10 years but their stupid add and attitude towards us - the consumer - forced this change.I have thick stubble and generally don't last long per blade but I'm very impressed with the feel, the comfort and ease with which this razor manages shave. I should have made the jump a long time ago.The only issue I have is that they don't give any form of stand, even if it's a dirt cheap one, to keep the razor on. I did have that with my Mach 3.I can't fault the quality of the build. My first blade lasted about 3 weeks (8 shaves) which is double what I got with the Mach 3.Very happy with the purchase.

i usually opt for Gillette Fusion razors, as they're normally the best quality for wet shaves in my opinion. The quality of this razor and blade pack however outstrips the Gillette ones I normally buy. The razor handle is heavier, better weighted and more ergonomic, which makes for a really pleasant shave. The blade pack is also better presented and more practical.I also don't think the current pricing is bad either. For the time being I'm going to test this razor for a while to see how good a shave it gives over time, but on current evidence i'll be choosing Wilkinson Sword the next time i need to purchase.Highly recommended.

Was always using gillette then I switched to Harry's which were amazing and much cheaper and always thought were actually better.... Until I randomly went back to gillette and realised gillette is so much better quality... BUT!.... The price of gillette is absolutely ridiculous... I mean seriously.... Scandalous how they can charge that much money for blades....So I decided to try these... And wow.. What a difference... I feel these are much better than gillette for me personally they are smoother on the skin and seem to last a few days longer so 100% I will be sticking to these... Would highly recommend

I've been bought into the Wilkinson Sword hydro system for some time. I've always found that, paired with the right foam, you got a close, irritation free, quick shave. I've lost track of the features they claim contribute to making this happen (hydrating gel from the blades? whatever.), and would struggle to figure out the exact difference between this and my last Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 razor. But that isn't a bad thing as I was happy with that! The point is, it works well. Just the right size and weight to the grip, makes the chore of shaving an effortless job.

Over a period of time I have tried numerous brands of razors but have finally settled on the Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Sense Energizer Men's Razor. With this razor you do not have to use a shaving foam which can be time consuming to apply, instead each blade contains a gel and all you need do is wet the face and then just shave as normal. The blades give a good quality close shave with the minimum of fuss. I have marked the value for money as four stars purely on the basis that all razor blades are over priced!
