I have used the previous design of Wilkinson Sword Hydro 3 Blades and razor cartridge in the past. They now have upgraded the cartridge with “40% less friction” hydrating reservoir. The packaging states that this is NOT a lube strip. The cartridge came with its own handle to attach it to. This handle is well balanced and rubber coated for easy grip and positioning of the cartridge on the face or under the chin. My package also came with an additional pack of 4 cartridges – in addition to the one fitted to the handle already.I decided to review the upgraded cartridge over a month. For my beard, this is about how long a blade usually lasts. I shave most days – with only the occasional “rest day” to let my skin chill out. That means the day after the rest day the cartridge will have to clear 2 days of stubble. Over the month, after these rest days, the shave was very comfortable. Also, as part of the Easter season, I have been involved in a Passion play and did not shave for 8 days - so I looked more the part of a disciple that I was playing. Today, May 27, I used the Wilkinson Hydro 3 cartridge to shave off my beard. The shave was very smooth and comfortable and did not less time than I had thought it would. I did not experience any cuts or nicks and am now back to my usual self. There are two ways of assessing this “thicker stubble” 8-day experience. One is that the cartridge was not used for 8 days and so had not been worn by 8 consecutive days of shaving. The other way to look at it is the fact that the cartridge has had to deal with 8 day’s growth all in one shave. Either way, the shave was very comfortable as I stated.I still have to turn the razor sideways to shave the beard hairs directly below my nose, as the normal vertical up-and-down stroke just does not reach them. But the need for this sideways stroke is probably just due to the shape of my face!So I have now used the Wilkinson Sword hydro for a full month and for my beard there is still shaves available. The hydrating reservoir on the cartridge’s edge also looks to have plenty of capacity too with little “fade”. The razor packaging advises, “for optimal performance change the cartridge when one or more holes of the gel reservoir appear empty”. Well none are empty – so I will continue to shave with the original cartridge. My face will “tell me” when I need to change the cartridge in the end.Beards vary from tough to soft –so it is a personal thing of course how long the cartridge will last for each user.My conclusion is that the new Wilkinson Hydro 3 with the hydrating gel reservoir cartridge gives a great shave and also that the cartridges last a good while. So, I am very pleased with the “improved” version!

For a number of years there has been competition between manufacturers as to how many blades could fit into a razor. I'm still surprised that no one brought out a 'ten blader' such is the apparent kudos of having the most blades for the closest shave.Over the last few years I have been using the Wilkinson Sword Hydro brand, I have tried both the 3 bladed and 5 bladed razors, relegating my old Mach 3 to the bottom drawer of the bathroom cabinet. So on to these refill blades. Like their close ‘5 bladed bigger brother’ they have been redesigned with an extra 80% lubrication that lasts twice as long, promising a smoother shave with less irritation. While the lubrication strip is supposed to last longer I should point out that the blades last the same as the older design.Do you change your blades because the lubrication is a little on the low side or do you persevere and change when the blade is blunt? I wait until they blunt and rarely worry about the low lube side of things. After all isn't that what foam or gel is supposed to do?All Wilkinson sword Hydro razors tend to give a close shave, but that is the same for both these 3 blade refills and the 5 blade refills, skin irritation is down to the individual, though I tend to have no problem with this product.I also favour the 3 blades more, firstly because the razor is easier to wield around my face and there is definitely less drag on your face and secondly because I can find no difference in the closeness of the shave between 3 blades and 5 blades. There is a big difference in the cost though and refills are getting more expensive by the day. Some say 5 blades are more efficient in keeping irritation down if you do one stroke at a time and never go over the same area twice. Who does this though? We all go over the same area time and time again don't we? It's much more efficient. I much prefer 3 blades as there is a much smoother action when shaving. So in conclusion, these are good blades, they give a close shave but don't expect the sharpness of the blades to last 80% longer. They are also a better balance between performance and cost, you'll not notice any difference in the closeness of the shave compared to the 5 blade big brother but you will have some change you can save up for your next beer.If you do suffer from irritation and razor burn here is a tip, wash and prepare face as usual with warm water etc but avoid highly perfumed foams or gels, then rinse razor repeatedly in very cold water when shaving. Finally rinse in cold water. It works and helps prevent razor burn.

Not really being able to afford the absolute latest razors , especially the extortionate prices for replacement cartridges , I had turned to supermarket own Brands.Almost 2 years ago I discovered superdrugs own brand 5 blade razor with cartridges at good prices but almost right away I could just not get the replacement cartridges either instore or online , to this day they still say they sell and stock them but none of the 5 nearby superdrugs I have tried have had the handles or cartridges for at least a year.So I then switched to Asda where I found their own brand much the best shave I had had to date but again after 9 months ago ,the blades became as rare as an unbatterred Mars Bar in Glasgow.I have now purchased this item as bizarre as it seems you can actually purchase the 5 blade hydro kit on Amazon for a much higher price but its the same handle and the blades can be interchanged between 3 and 5 blade cartridges it will happily accept both , so I bought this and some 3 and 5 blade cartridges to compare. So far only used the 3 blade cartridges , 3 days in to my second cartridge , the 1st lasted me 5 shaves , this one is still going strong after 3 shaves , the 1st cartridge probably had another 2 shaves in it but the lubricant strip dissolved after 5 shaves , with the second cartridge I am taking care to dry it of fully after use and keep it in its travel case away from condensation in the bathroom , I am reasonably confident , these may actually last 6 - 7 shaves despite the fact I have a very strong growth.I use the KOS Shaving Oil followed by Wilkinson Sword Shaving gel and then Nivea Shaving Balm , this I have found is the best combination for me , you will all have your own preferences or routines that better suit your own skin and beard growth. So at the moment early days but very happy with the purchase and will try the 5 bladed cartridges in due course

I have used a Hydro 5 on and off (i.e. when I could get offers on the blades!) for the last three years as it was amongst the best wet shaves I have had. Now I have the Hydro 3 blades which I am glad to say are compatible with Hydro 5 handle as well as the lighter Hydro 3 razor... and I am very impressed. I was never really convinced that increasing the number of blades indefinitely would result in progressively better shaving performance and there's little in it to choose between the 3 and the 5. The 3 is more agile on the face reaching more easily into the trickier areas such as the top part of the upper lip under the nose. With 5 blades to share the load, I believe the Hydro 5 blades stay sharp longer.Right now there's no cost differential and both are still pricey - buying the 8 pack is the most cost effective option with a significant saving per blade over this 4 pack. Nevertheless I am pleased to have a choice of blades and can recommend both Hydro 3 and Hydro 5 for a close, low-irritation shave.

I'm sometimes a bearded chap so my use of a razor tends to go in phases, and historically I've been a Gillette man. However, I do have several friends who swear that Wilkinson Sword razors are better, so I was pleased to give these a go.The big selling point with the Hydro 3 is that there is gel either side of the cutting blades, which is meant to give a closer and more comfortable shave. I am prone to quite bad shaving rash if I shave too quickly or don't use enough lubrication whilst shaving, so these sounded as if they were ideal for me. After the first shave, I can see that the Hydro 3 is indeed something pretty good. Shaving was smooth, quick, and there was no need to go over any part of my face twice, impressively - and, most importantly, no shaving rash at all! I always get some sort of rash, so this was unexpected. It's early days with these razor blades, but so far I'm impressed. I might even try the 5-blade version. Recommended.

These definitely do what they say and have been well designed to look after sensitive skin prone to irritation and rashes after shaving. The main feature of this is it lubricates as you shave. It has a gel reservoir which has 40% less friction than lube strips. It leaves a gel glide as you shave wet protecting your skin. It's a feature we haven't tried before and it definitely helps. The blades leave you with a very close, baby smooth shave and have lasted well so far with no blunting. They're good value for money - especially if you get 8 for £12 which is about what I was playing for Gillette blades which weren't as effective so will be switching to this brand mainly for the lubrication featureas sensitive skin is a problem. We were able to press as hard as needed with no cuts and although a slightly bulky head it reached everywhere it needed to.Recommended, a great, close shave.

First things first - I was lucky enough to get these via Amazon Vine - so my review box also came with the razor itself. I think that if you buy this, you just get the cartridge refills.Razor wars have got ridiculous. One blade, then two blades, then three and now some have 5 blades. Crazy. The prices are crazy too. These have three blades. And they give a nice shave. I'll be honest, though. i can't really tell the difference between three blades and five (I resist five on the grounds it seems to be such ludicrous overkill). Wilkinson Sword claim that these are lubricated to be smoother on your skin, but, again, I rely on shaving gel for lubrication and softening. So it's hard to tell how much difference the "Hydro" technology makes. But overall, these are nice - they give a good, close comfortable shave. Which is what you want, isn't it?

I've used Wilkinsons for many years, having a variation of beard and moustache as the the season dictates.I have moved onto 5 blades some years ago, its not the extra blades, but the surface area that makes the difference. The 3 blade system is cheaper, but not so great on rough skin. This product now has extra lube strips.these do help if you manage to pre-wet the razor 2 minutes ahead of shaving time to activate them and good for a quick tidy trim. However everyone uses a separate shaving cream or gel for a major shave don't they?In which case the incorporated lube has no effect. The handle will take the 5 blade re-fills in case you'd like to swap back to the premium blade.Weirdly - these havebeen launched at the same time gillette have released a TV advert about their lube system!

The Wilkinson Sword Hydro 3 Razor Blades - Pack of 4 arrives in a sealed plastic container, cutting down one side and popping the razor together with a illustration how to load/unload new razors, the package also containers a cradle to keep the razor on. A blade is already loaded on the razor, its time to change the blade when one of the gel reservoirs appears empty. Nice weight to the handle and the razor has good grip and handles very nicely when shaving. I use combination of brush, warm face first, then apply shaving cream and then shave in one swipe and rinse the blade and continue until i shave my face. The shave was good, hassle free and produced a pleasing result. If considering the purchase of this razor I can highly recommend this.

. Both my son and I have used these Wilkinson Sword blades for a while now. My son has one of the vibrating type but wanted another non-vibrating one to see any possible difference. The bumf claims that the “Hydro 3 razor features a water activated gel reservoir designed to protect skin from irritation, delivering 40% less friction”. Therefore, when these Wilkinson Sword Hydro 3 Razor Blades were on offer, via the Vine programme, we requested them. We found that the heads give a close and clean shave – even after a couple of days’ worth of growth. The blades themselves lasted a long time before they become unusable. The lubrication together with shaving foam helps thwart any dryness or chafing of the skin..

These blades give a close smooth shave. They have a lubricating strip which helps the razor glide over the skin and make the skin really soft.My husbands face actually feels so soft it is like he never had whiskers in the first place. He is a great fan of Wilkinson Sword and has used them for years. Though the blades of a few years ago gave a nice close shave these new ones are even better. He gets a good clean shave with no nicks or cuts.He has also tried the 5 blade version and this 3 blade is just as good. Just a note to say either blade can be used with the same handle. These are good value for money, my hubby gets about a weeks worth of shaving from one blade, this goes for the 3 and 5 blade razors.

Ok, so as a disclaimer I do think the Wilkinson Sword 5 blade hydro system is actually the best razor I have used sinc I started shaving, however, before there was the 5 there was this series of 3 blades and they are a cheaper alternative. The blades still stay so much sharper than Gillette in my opinion, I find I need to change blades much more infrequently so it really is a cost effective way of saving money. The hydro lubricating strip is a very design and while it will of course eventually wear off, the first few shaves are a joy as it moisterises the skin perfectly.Frankly, I think Wilkinson Sword are the best man can get, no matter that the adverts tell you

First time I used this razor, I thought it was not working. That says it all about the smooth and efficient functioning of the design. Almost every type of razor I have bought over the years has inflicted cuts occasionally. I think this design is fool-proof.Time after time, especially with supermarket own brands, problems arise with finding follow up supply of blades. The arrangement available via Amazon for regular supply of blades every three months is superb and so logical. Sorry if normal retail outlets cannot or will not provide continuity and competitive pricing. But don't blame on-line shoppers; look at your own failing to put the customer first.

These are decent enough blades that do give a close shave although I would be lying if I said can really feel the benefit of the Hydro feature and my first two shaves did produce two (tiny) nicks. The handle is quite light and anonymous in a rather dull battleship grey but easy to use. No rear blade for side-burn detailing is a miss and so I cannot see myself switching from the excellent (but dearer) ProGlide Flexball to this item long term.**UPDATE** Very impressed with the longevity of each blade so upping my rating to four stars

18.4.2016

To be honest I can't really tell much difference between the 3 blade and the 5 blade in terms of closeness of shave and since I use a separate gel foam the little reservoir of hydrating lubricant doesn't really add a lot to the experience but when all is said and done these give a good shave. They're easy to fit onto the handle, they don't tug at the skin and the end result is smooth skin. That's about all I'm looking for with blades really so they work great. Good value for money too at the current price of around a fiver.
