With the coming of SSD disk drives and with the increase in size of USB flash cards, it's only a matter of time before the two technologies converge. SSD disks have been largely constrained by a form factor based on the size of a laptop hard drive, where USB flash memory has been constrained by limited speed and the need to fit in a rigid container that plugs directly into the USB port. This Western Digital drive has the speed of an SSD disk but is less than half the size. It connects using a USB C cable, although there is an "A-type" adapter included for compatibility with older computers. The thing I find amazing is the speed: the combination of USB-C and fast memory technology makes this external drive as fast (in fact, faster) then the internal SSDs in my modern gaming computer. My computer's SSDs can only manage 300 MB/s, and this drive effortlessly matches that when plugged in to the USB-C (USB 3.1) port - I believe it could manage faster speeds if I had a faster source to test it with. USB 3.0 is fine too. Plugged in to a USB 2.0 port it only manages about 75MB/s, but that's a limitation of USB.I've been using the drive to edit video, and there is no perceptible difference between using this drive and an internal SSD. The disk has 476 GB available to Windows, and has some (as far as I can tell) unnecessary software on it: you can test the drive for problems, and you can install encryption and backup software from Western Digital, or you can click on one of a number of advertisements to buy and install third-party software (open the WD Discovery program and click the "Apps" tab). I have not used any of the software other than the WD Drive Utilities, so I can't comment on their usefulness. the WD Security app comes with a warning that if you encrypt the drive with a password and then forget the password, you won't be seeing your data ever again. The drive is so small and light that it doesn't lie flat on the desk unless you twist the USB cable to lie flat. The drive consists of two parts: a black plastic square and a dull metallic ridged square, which gets slightly warm when the drive is plugged in. The metal is presumably used to dissipate the heat from internal components. It's a shame that there's no carrying pouch included, although to be honest you won't have any trouble slipping it inside even the smallest and tightest of laptop bags. This sort of drive is a big step forward in the evolution of computer storage. In another five years, we'll think 2.5" SSD drives are as old-fashioned as spinning magnetic 3.5" hard disk drives already are.

The problem with a lot of the cheaper pc's and laptops is that they look great and appear really good value. The downside is that in order to offer such low prices, manufacturers have skimped on memory size. Not everyone is aware of this and only find this out once you've stored several photos, files and music only to find the computer is full and running slowly. This product from WD offers a solution. It's a USB connected hard drive which allows you to drag and drop files onto it. This saves space on your PC/laptop and allows it to run quicker and more effectively. I've used external hard drives before and my current one is quite bulky, heavy and really quite uninspiring to look at.This hard drive is the opposite. It's amazingly light and portable, meaning you can slip it into a bag and hardly notice it's there. It's very stylish and well designed and although not lightning quick, it's more than quick enough for everyday use. One of my fears when using such a device is the possibility of a malfunction and losing all my data. This unit allows you to backup your files to a cloud, really handy and gives you extra piece of mind that if there was some issue with it, your data is retrievable.Overall I'm very impressed with this. It's light, stylish and easy to use. I've added a photo next to a lighter to show you how small it is

A great buy, from all points of view.I bought it to pair it with my XBOX ONE X, with the aim of being able to shorten the loading times of the games.Inside the package you will find the small SSD, the cable and a USC type C -> USB 3.0 adapterOnce connected it was immediately recognized by both MacMini and XBOX.Loading is wonderfully fast (up to 540 MB / s).It is not the first SSD I use, another SSD is installed in my MacMini, also Western Digital, from the "Blue" series. As I said in that review, the MacMini is reborn. However I can anticipate you that the loading times of the games have HALT.So I recommend it to all those who work with very large files or software, which require quite long loading times.Excellent transportability, you will not feel the weight of this SSD inside your bag at all and will also take up very little space on your desk. The manufacturer's 3-year warranty is the icing on the cake. Symbol of the seriousness and professionalism that has always distinguished the Western Digital brand.Have a good day and good shopping.

To me, Western Digital means security. I've used their drives for years and never had one fail other than when old and well used. So I've grown to feel very secure with WD (I've tried other makes and been disappointed). As to this drive, the review is not based on the software on the drive (security, etc) but on the drive itself.Pros:Small and compact, very easy to carry aroundvery lightVERY fasteasy to use.Cons:None.Whilst praising WD drives, I would never trust my most valuable data to any one single source. I back mine up to a stand alone drive (all data) and my 'never-ever-want-to-lose-this' data to a separate drive as well. I therefore have 3 copies, my main drive, my backup drive and my 'special files'drive as I work on the basis that, should both my main computer drive and my main backup drive fail at the same time (most unlikely) my essential data is still secure.A drive such as this is ideal for the latter due to it's speed and size making it easy to store elsewhere for security. An excellent newcomer to the WD drive store

My Passport SSD is a robustly built, light and small hard drive with strong encryption and multi OS functionality. The, just over, 500GB size offers good additional space for your computer. Its easy to have your files on the go and know they're secure.Measuring just 3.5" in length this solid state drive is one of the lightest I've used. It unique retro look also makes it stand out from the usual black plastic. The encryption used is one of the best available. Password secured it gives peace of mind that, if lost, no one is going to break into it. Data transfer speeds, with the USB 3.1, are very quick. Even transferring large files is so much quicker.Overall this hard drive ticks all the boxes.Fast data transfer, small, light but very hardy, great security and a good size fir bumping up your storage.

Cable provided is too short to be practical. I previously read other reviews and decided to buy a 1M cable at same time (NIMASO PD 100W USB, ASIN: B07VCPC8X1) from Amazon. Sooo glad I did!In common with all storage manufacturers, the capacity is base 10 which in human numbers = 1TB, whereas computers work in base 2 which in IT world = 0.95 TB. Hence the difference between what some people might think they are buying compared to what the computer shows it as (there are plenty of published articles discussing the difference, and has been practiced by all manufacturers for many years). 5% does not affect what I want to use it for.Copying 80GB of VMs from laptop (Lenovo T540p, SSD, USB 3.0 port)with the 3rd party cable, to this external drive performed at over 230 MB/s. This is satisfactory to me.

First off, this thing is small - much smaller than expected. Cute is the word! Works straight outta the box (may need reformatting depending on your OS). I used with my MacBook Pro and didn't reformat to APFS first - I still saw speeds of +500MBs which is awesome compared to my WD USB 3 drives which chug along at around 200MBs. I'm sure this will push up slightly once I reformat, but I like having the ability to use these hard drives with Mac and Windows. Its a sturdy design, doesn't feel flimsy at all. The USB lead is fairly short, but I think thats a good thing - I get annoyed when you have 1m+ leads that just get tangled everywhere and you end up wrapping around things.

I really like this little fellow, but it's missing two important things:1. It doesn't have a status LED. So you have no ideea when you write or read from the drive. Such a pity.2. It's still an internal SATA M.2 drive, therefore it can only get around 550MB/s (for sequential read/write). It would've been perfect if WD used a PCIe M.2 drive, to go over 1000MB/s.Strange enough, the drive is recognized as a "MILAN II 512G" drive, and not the standard WDC name. Also, the included cable is really-really small (like 10-15cm or so).

The SSD is much smaller than I expected, especially when comparing to the WD equivalent non-SSD hard drive. It’s about half the width and very light. It’s made from high quality materials and seems very sturdy in construction.I use it for photo editing and transfer speeds have been respectable but nothing special. The only real issue is the fact that the provided USB-C cable is built in a way that makes it proprietary to this hard drive. This means it cannot be used with other devices.Would recommend.

The Good The My Passport SSD is rugged, light and super compact. The drive uses USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C to deliver fast performance. It works with both Windows and MacOS right out of the box and features strong encryption to protect data in case of loss or theft. The Bad The drive's capacity caps at just 1TB. It's a fingerprint magnet. The Bottom Line The My Passport SSD is an excellent portable drive for those needing to securely carry data on the go.

21.5.2019

Just received, the drive its self looks and feels great BUT I cannot believe the cable supplied - the wire is only 92mm … 92mm... it may be ok if it is lying flat and connected to a laptop, but I will be using it with a Surface Pro 6 and a Lenovo tablet; and for that it is totally and utterly useless … wouldn't you just love to have a chat with the person at WD who authorised this to understand how do such incompetent people get into such jobs!!!

Another excellent storage and backup solution from WD.This Passport is about the size of a generous biscuit and is very light. It has a great capacity of 256GB, and to contextualise, everything on my Dropbox comes to about 45GB. You would probably get more than a hundred MP4 films on it too. Also has encryption and backup software pre loaded. What's not to like? Great value intermediate storage solution.

I bought this drive especially for PUBG's rendering issues since the Xbox One S's HDD doesn't cut it in terms of loading everything in properly. But with this SSD, all the buildings and loot load before I even hit the ground. Great little piece of kit. Also I'll be using this drive to play games that take ages to load, good value for money!

I have 2 hard drives already - 1 Toshiba & 1 WD.So this is my second WD.Tried it out 1 day & came back the next and looked at files and saved some more. All look perfectly fine to me.Saving to the hard drive seem fast as well.More than adequate for my photo files & for my Power-point presentations and documents.

All and all a great ssd drive. The encryption system is very good. Just a note though... Another company is supporting some models of this. If i am not mistaken is Sandisk. Easily checked by typing the full code name of the product. I am not sayin that is a bad thing but it is falsly branded...
