I made the jump to an SSD in my rig a long time ago, and I vividly remember when 128gb was top end. Thankfully things are moving on well and pretty much everything has an sad in it now once you move beyond budget ranges. So, onto this drive. Western Digital has bought Sandisk and with it has bought it's way back into ssd storage. Although mechanical drives are here to stay for a good while yet SSD's are the future and clearly WD know this.SSD's have started to move beyond standard 2.5" enclosures and now offer Msata and the newer M.2 format. Confusingly the M.2 format comes in two varieties. M.2 Sara and M.2 PCIE. The difference essentially is speed. PCIe is a much faster interface and thus can achieve blistering speeds. That said having used both you are unlikely to notice ay difference unless you are moving a lot of files about or running complex activities such as renders/vm's etc then the data solution is just fine. The drive arrive in a small cardboard box with nothing else. A quick trip on line gets you the toolbox from where you can manage the drive and update the latest firmware etc. The drive itself is quite plain and dull with just a white and blue sticker which might annoy if you have a windowed case. If you do then customisation may be the way forward, at least when sandisk ones have a black sticker. I feel this could include some stickers for customisation.Installation is straightforward and this system found it right away. So how does it perform? This is a difficult one as it will vary between chipset, river and workload environment.I'm running a Maximus 7 ranger Z97 board with an i7 4790k and 16gb of ram and I was able to bench it to similar levels as advertised and easily on a par with my Samsung 2.5" drive. So why use this over a 2.5"? Firstly it's a neater more compact solution which is ideal for laptops or sff builds. Also, it draws all its power from the board so it's one less cable to route. If you are replacing a smaller drive I use macrium reflect free for cloning and it works superbly.WD back all this up with a 1.75 million hour run time capacity and a 3 year warranty. Having used their warranty process before for a failed red has drive it is the best process I have used beyond Amazons own within the first 12 months.Overall a superb drive and reasonably priced, though I would definitely shop around. As mentioned Sandisk were bought by Western Digital so there may be discounts to be had on Sandisk branded products.

My Windows laptop is now nearly 5 years old and was getting sluggish with all the additional traffic, background updating and all the other things the guys at Microsoft prefer your computer to do instead of it doing what you want it to do. This Western Digital disk came along and I didn't have any qualms about giving it a go. WD have been going for a very long time in computer time. I remember buying 128mb hard disk and installing it in a machine I built as a student using Windows 3.1 - like I said - a long time ago! That disk, and quite a number of others I installed for people many moons ago stood the test of time, so reputationally, no problem. The 1TB disk landed and was well safely package but with very little in the way of instructions.Once I'd read up on the current advice on hardware (not having opened the bone of a machine for many years!) and worked out the best way to mirror a disk these days (and then bought the software, cables and adapter etc) I was ready to go. As usual with big job with a computer I left the file transfer running overnight. The actual disk swap inside the machine was a breeze (you'll need to hold onto a screw that you take out to put the new disk in - god forbid they should provide you with a new screw) and fired it up it was like a new machine.Instead of a 4-5 minute boot, it was down to less than a minute. Even with all the thrashing the Windows background updater and other programmes do it had settled down and was ready to work properly in under 2 minutes! It runs fine and opens software, files and works with them incredibly quickly.Bottom line is I was getting ready to spend maybe £500 on a new laptop, now I don't have to. Now I'm not a gamer so my old laptop (a Lenovo i5 with 8gb ram) runs mainly office, adobe pdf and photoshop type software and they all run much quicker than before.Hopefully I'll get another couple of years out of my laptop with this disk installed.I believe this to be worth the price to revitalise any laptop that currently has a 5400rpm hard disk still running and thrashing in the background. Instead of forking out for a new laptop. The additional software to mirror the drive and connect it up will set you back about another £30 on top of the price of this disk but we'll worth it if you have a solid an trustworthy laptop you want to upgrade and keep working with."Review by hubby

This is for the SATA M.2 version of this drive. As this is a SATA M.2 you will not get the insane speeds of a PCIe M.2 one. It will also take up one SATA position on your MB.Be careful if you buy an adaptor card to allow you to fit it into a PCI slot as although it will fit it will not work with a PCI/M.2 adaptor card, I think you can get PCI/SATA for M.2 adaptor cards that fit in a PCI slot but they have a SATA connector on them to run a cable to the SATA MB socket.I have this fitted into a cheap StarTech M.2 to SATA SSD converter and it works fine. It's on a par with a normal SSD speed wise in my set up, which is the difference between night and day if you still use normal hard drives, you have to format it before use. If your MB has an M.2 slot it comes into its own and for small PC builders the option to get rid of all your bulky drives and have a 1TB storage capacity on such a small device would probably be worth the money in itself.I've knocked a star off as mine came with absolutely no instructions in the box, admittedly any M.2 adaptor you buy will explain how to fit it but still I think there should have been something. If you are looking into M.2 and want to know more the web has some good beginners guides like explaining computers that explain the differences in speeds and sizes.Reliability wise until it breaks I wont be able to tell but you get a 3year guarantee that gives me confidence (although I always back up).If you are in the market for M.2 this one is a good bet it is well built with a good guarantee behind it, worth a look.

As I am not particulary tech-savvy and didn't have the confidence to instal this myself, I asked a more competent friend to assist, and to be honest, he pretty much did everything. It didn't seem to be a particularly complicated process. My operating system (Windows 10) is now on the SSD and the PC boots from there. This has resulted in my start-up time reducing from around 1 min 45 seconds, down to around 40 seconds. I hope that is down to the superior speed of the SSD, but, from memory, booting up from any clean drive is always a fair bit faster. My 1 minute 45 seconds time was certainly significantly less three years ago, when my PC was new. I have been assured that,by keeping this drive for the operating system and Microsoft Office only, this faster boot-up time should be the norm from now on, as should the generally faster access times I've been experiencing.I'm sure the next PC I buy wil have SSD as default, but in the meantime, I am grateful for the improved boot-up and faster access times this offers.

I installed this drive into a older HP laptop which I was thinking about upgrading, and it has completely transformed the computer.Boot up is now in seconds rather than minutes, and the computer runs faster than it did when it was new. I mainly use it for Office and productivity stuff, but browsing and games are noticeably faster to load and run more smoothly than before.Exact data transfer rates will depend upon the device in which the drive is installed, and not all devices are SSD compatible so check before you buy. But this has added quite a few years to the life of my laptop. If you are thinking about upgrading your PC or laptop, then it is certainly worth considering this as a reasonably cheap but highly effective way to rejuvenate an older system.

SLC technology (better than the slower, less reliable MLC), with a reasonable price, and good performance (only marginally slower write speed than the WD blue). It's got a 3yr limited warranty. It's a pretty good buy, that should last well.I had no problems getting it up and running on a older desktop that was running a regular hard drive, I did a clean install of Windows 7, and it was clear how fast the drive was, the whole install was done in around 10 minutes.

This is recommended without hesitation. It is a fast, as far as I can tell, reliable M2 SSD. Worth using to speed up your computer as an SSD is always a reliable and relatively cheap way to do this. Particularly with the current prices of these.Only thing I have found is it does get quite warm, but I was warned of this.It is definitely worth your time. Well recommended.

Great product! Really boosted my computer boot time. I installed the OS and some essential programmes I use like Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop. You can start the programs in seconds! It usually takes me ages to start an adobe programme. Highly recommended, but only if you plan on using it for boot + essential apps, otherwise you'll need more than 120 GB.

I have to admit to cheating and getting a tech savvy friend to install this and cast an eye over my laptop beforehand. He was impressed by the logical installation and size of the drive. The improvements in speed and storage have revitalised my machine, so the cost of this item should be juxtaposed against a new computer really.

Upgraded my Dell XPS 13 laptop from a 256GB to a 1TB SSD. It was easy to clone my system and the new WD 1TB drive is fast and stable. Obviously the extra drive capacity is very handy ... no more relying on awkward, slow USB flash drives to handle all my content. This is a good value, reliable drive with good performance.

It's fast. It's good. It's a damn SSD that's well priced, what more do you want? Also the WD Dashboard software is super useful. Get that too.** Summary **I turn on my PC. It boots to windows in 6 seconds. I start rebooting my PC because of how incredible the difference is between this and a HDD.

I was looking at the Samsung ssd’s But after a lot of research this one was great for the money and I’ve been really impressed with it. Defo a great buy

Use this to install current favourite games on. Load up times are top, just as well buying a standard sata SSD but this is lovely and discrete.

29.1.2018

this has been a revelation. switch on the pc and within 2-3 seconds the logon screen is there. my previous sata ssd would take up to a minute.

1.11.2017

Good value SSD which works fine. Had to send it back so as to buy a larger capacity SSD because formatted capacity was (from memory) 232 Gb.
