I got this to work plastic. Yes I've started using a hot melt sculpting plastic from america called Cx5. Melt in a slow cooker form it by hand and as it cools use hot tools to shape it and finework it.This brings me to the weller. It's great, although for the plastic work it runs a shade too hot. I am going to invest in a denticians wax carver some time soon. The weller does work but because it run just that wee bit hotter than i'd like with no temp control it means that while i can do a fair bit of gross detailing i still need to return to my doritos dip jar meths burner to heat dental tools. Yeah try buyin a decent spirit lamp these days and you too will have a home made doritos dip jarburner in short order. So i decided to try it for what it's meant for,,pyrography..I've never tried this before and find my self hooked. For the task it's intended for it's superb value and does the job easily. I've been doing burned in scrollwork and portraits on beech with great pleasure and am currently doing an ash clock face with a celtic knot pattern. The range of tool heads is very entertaining and i've been having fun finding out what effects i can create with them. The only draw back that i have issue with is the same as i have with normal soldering irons for electronics. IF it's not a cordless with a butane fuel source or a capacitor cell in the handle then the cable is a serious pain in the hind parts. It's heavy and cumbersome and stresses your hand as you use it. I find myself with solderers joint sysndrome, stiff and aching if i work for too long.If there was some sort of temp control on it then this would be perfect for my sculpting even with the heavy cable. As it is it loses a star for the cable. Cant deduct for the plastic as it's not adverstised for that purpose. That apart it's been a nice intro into a new field of art for me and while i won't be specialising in it, i have other things to do, I find it's fun to wind down with a bit of woodsmoke in the air and a nice malt at the end of a longish day and it adds another way of finishing some of my wood projects.

Hi I thought I'd write this review to clear a few things up after reading some negative comments on the item. Firstly this does produce some nice work but it's down to the style of art and the wood you use. The examples I have provided are of a famous martial artist you may or may nor recognise that I copied off the net and my own work of my eldest Sons. All have been burnt on 6x4 balsa wood using the Weller kit.I bought this kit as an introduction to a hobby I'd been wanting to branch out into for a long time. I thought it a cheap way to see if it gave me the 'bug' and it certainly did. I have since purchased a much more expensive wire tip machine that lets me do fine work.I would not recommend this kit for intricate fine work but it is excellent for silhouetting and numbering. I will definitely keep it for such work and indeed created my Sons pictures with it after I purchased the wire tip one!The kit comes with an assortment of tips that you may or may not use. I have only ever used the fine point one as that works for me. I found balsa the easiest to use with this pen. It does heat up at the business end where you hold it but never enough that I couldn't complete what I was doing. I had no problem screwing in the tips until tight and unscrewing them by hand. I would not recommend using pliers etc at any stage and waiting 5 minutes or so for a tip to cool isn't long.Pros: Great for Silhouette workCheap intro to the hobbyGood qualityCons: Limited to softer woods and style of artTakes a while to heat up/cool downFixed temperature (not an issue for examples shown)I hope this review has been of help to some of youDave

I'm really pleased with this wood burning kit. It comes with several different heads for the iron, and also a small light-duty stand to place it on while it's hot (I'll be honest it took me a while to figure out how the stand worked but I think I was just being stupid...) it also arrives with instructions in the box and some patterns to follow if you'd like to.My only gripes with the kit are that all the different heads are stored in the original box, I'd have liked them to come in a separate wee box just so they were easier to get in and out etc. Apart from that the only minor issue is that the handle gets hot but only at the very end nearest the iron,so maybe only 1-2cm of the handle but it's enough to render the ergonomically shaped handle redundant, as you have to hold the handle about half way up, this makes your fingers numb after a while but I used it for nearly 2 hours straight and it was bearable. If I decide to take up wood burning as an actual hobby I'd probably buy a better model that's more comfortable to use.If I was really picking hairs I'd like the cord to swivel so that you could use the iron more smoothly but for ~£20 as an entry level tool it's ideal so 4 stars.I used it to decorate wooden utensils, picture attached.

So this is a decent machine for the price, and after 6 months still works fine,It is a single temperature solid point machine, meaning that while your points are limited to those you get with the machine and others you purchase in kits, if you can find any with a matching thread size, you don't need to learn to shape wire points or deal with shaping wire points.Because it's a solid point machine there is no current running through the tip making manipulating the tip easier, but it also means the machine heats up and stays hot which can be a problem for people depending on experience using hot machines.Solid tips can be changed mid pyrography using a pair of pliers to safely handle the bit anda glass or pottery dish to hold the hot bits.On the negative side the machine stays hot for up to 20 minutes after finishing work, which means you have a health and safety risk if you have animals or children, requiring a safe place to put your machine to let it cool. You also have only a single working temprature which can be a problem. From a hobbyist point of view the blade chuck for hot cutting seems good quality but I can't comment on the heat transfer to blade as I haven't used this feature.I did a full review on youtube. Great value for money, powerful, I only really have two problems with this, one is the nibs which as many have said warp quite quickly under the heat after repeated use, but as I have just noticed there seem to be weller tips available separately at an affordable price, assuming they fit all weller models...Only two or three of the nibs in this set are remotely useful to me for woodburning - the thin pointy one, and the two calligraphy nib-style ones, the round patterned ones look pretty useless, I can't imagine what one would use these for really, could have thrown in more narrow tips instead...The other issue I had, which is more troublesome, is the lead - it is a) short and b) bulky and inflexible, which makes the woodburning pen rather awkward to hold at times...also limits where you can use it due to the very short leadOverall though decent with these fairly minor hurdles taken into account, worth the money

My first pyrography pen. It works and seems reliable but with a couple of issues.Firstly is that the temperature is hard to manage. Obviously this is expected since it doesn't have temperature control, but it's still something to consider. It can lead to the marks being either lighter or darker than you expect, especially as you can't tell how hot it is until you've started burning. The other issue is that it gets hot to hold and the handle is not comfortable. I ended up wearing a leather glove to avoid the heat. Given that you will probably be working with fine detail you need a good grip on it, but this means the hard handle hurts your fingers after not too long. However, overall, its good as entry level tool. I wouldn't have gotten one at a higher price.

I bought this item because I wanted to make some garden signs. I had initially tried grinding out lettering using a mini-drill but it just wasn't neat enough for my liking.I was slightly hesitant prior to purhase; even at the reduced price (just under £19.00) it felt like quite a bit of money for something I may only use on a couple of occassions. However, on receiving the item I was immediately struck by it's quality and after practising on some scraps of wood (a must!) I started on the signs; and even if I say so myself they look great! The burner comes with a wide variety of different tips and attachments, and I quickly became aware of it's possibilities. I can see myself using it quite a bit,and may even use it to make some gifts for my poor family!

Bought this for a wedding project to create name plates for the wedding reception on wooden hearts. It is ideal for this and has a range of different nibs for different purposes. It is good for amateurs an it is easy to use but for professional purposes it may not be heavy duty enough. I have had no problems with it and has been ideal for the tasks i bought it for. I will probably use it still after the projects are complete as its quite theraputic to use. Its a change from calligraphy but you can use it for this too.I recommend this as the ideal tool for anyone wanting to try pyrography for the first time and is certainly alot cheaper than the kits for sale on the high street from places suchas Hobbycraft.

I was worried about buying this burner as I wanted it for cutting out stencils from plastic stencil paper. But it does it beautifully. I'm able to do more intricate stencils as a result. I use the blade that's shown in the photo to cut the stencils out. I found the metal tip they recommend for the job didnt do it as good so used the other one. Taping the little metal holder onto an old ceramic tile to hold the burner when resting it is a good idea as the little metal holder is a bit light. The handle does become very warm the longer you use it but that's to be expected.I really love this burner. Great value for money.I've no interest in using the other nibs that came with it though so cant review them.

I bought this for woodcarving project, it took a lot of practice to get a good technique though. Had to experiment with the different knibs to get the best lines. You have to get the technique right and make sure you "flow" as otherwise it starts burning and you get uneven lines. The shaft gets hot too so had to use in short sessions. Possibly a more expensive version the temp control would be better - but for a starter this does the job - although personally I found the results to be far from perfect (but perhaps I need more skill and practice !!) Ideal for a starter and for basic hobby projects though and for the money does it's job.

It was really useful reading previous reviews for this woodburning kit. Comments that if you press hard, the tips will break. Having used my kit a lot already, I learnt that the heat does all the work for you. You just have to relax using it and there is no need to press hard for anything. If you keep the heat held anywhere for a few seconds, you get definition where you need it. Its really simple to use. Use a glove or some kind of heat protection when using it as it heats up to high temperatures. (hence why the tip will break easily) I made name pegs for a big birthday I am having this year & really happy with the results.

Thought I would give wood burning a go and found this one on Amazon. As I am using it for more decorative stuff I have only really used the finer point attachments so can't comment as yet on the others. This hand held wood burner is great ! .its Not too heavy and nice and slim and heats up rapidly . Being a woman I also find the weight of the product just right for me. With practice I have been able to produce some nice work without burning the house down or covering my fingers with blisters. The only down side to it is the lead isn't very flexible and it's also a tad to short.. Apart from those niggles it's a good product.

I've done lots of pyrographs with this burner and found it good for the job. It's easy to use but I could imagine an easier one too (maybe because it requires a different handling and holding than an ordinary pencil or pen but it might be my problem rather than the burner.)Lots of heads, though I only used some of them and it was enough. Be careful when it's hot and the head becomes loose: use proper tools to tight it back!It doesn't come with a heat regulator so the shading is a bit tricky.Altogether I recommend this as a good entry and mid level burner but for very fine art you can go for something more sophisticated.

I bought this from a position of ignorance and I enjoy using it.It does not have a wire nib, as described in the woodburning book which I also bought (an excellent book)) and that is why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5.The tool is easy to use but the stand is not at all stable. Better to make your own, perhaps incorporating the one supplied.I have a nice new cushion cover with a hole in it that is a constant reminder not to trust the stand. It would also be useful to know how and where to get replacement tips - my pupils have 'mislaid' 3 of mine.

I bought the Weller Woodburning and Hobbyist Kit, with a view to making products to sell. I didn't want to pay too much as I was unsure as to the viability of such a project. This tool ticked all the right boxes for price and accessories.I am very pleased with the performance of the tool and can find only one minor fault. The protective guard between the iron and handle does get extremely hot and when concentrating on what one is doing, fingers can come into contact with the guard, so be careful. Other than that I give this product full marks.
