I thought it was about time I had a go on a teleconverter for the first time and after a bit of research I picked this model. I have got an Alpha 850 and one of the downsides of having a full frame camera is losing the reach you used to enjoy with your APS-C bodied cameras. Suddenly your 300mm lens is 300mm and not 450mm, and your 500mm is no longer 750mm because of the loss of the 'crop factor'.I have got a Sony F8 500mm prime reflex lens which is an interesting piece of kit and I thought it would be interesting to try a TC on it. The first thing is the Sony TCs are not compatible with that lens as the recess on the back of it sticks out too far (according to gear reviews on the net),but it fits and works fine with this one. You lose the AF as it can't lock on but the manual focus is quite easy to get to grips with with about half an hour's play. You have an aperture of F16 as the converter doubles your aperture, but with the appropriate ISO, shutter, and exposure compensation curing a dark picture is easy. I also found that vignetting wasn't too bad considering the price and the fact the body is full frame. I will also add the build quality is decent and it comes with lens caps and a pouch to store it in.I have also used this TC with a Tamron SP 70-300mm USD lens and it worked well. The AF wouldn't lock on again but manual focus is easy with that lens and the image quality was generally pleasing. The aperture was once again doubled so at 70mm (140mm) it was F8 and pushed up to F11 at 300mm (600mm) and I didn't find it a problem. In conclusion I would say this is a good buy if you are unsure about how useful a teleconverter will be with your kit and don't want to spend hundreds on it to try. It is advisable to use it in good light conditions and I would say that at 500mm plus focal length the use of a monopod or tripod is a must. I personally found that with a little practice a monopod was fine, plus it is easier to move around than a tripod if you are going to be using this TC for wildlife photography. I would also point out that because you will probably have to manually focus on most lenses that it will be very difficult to use on moving subjects, so flying birds, motorsport, etc... will probably not be realistic unless you have an exceptionally fast lens and the AF works.

The choice of this particular product was almost a no-brainer, as the more refined, fully compatible versions are too expensive for the number of times I expect to need this level of magnification. The few reviews on these products pointed to this as the best compromise between functionality and price, and from my brief experience so far, I agree. The parcel arrived quickly and was well packaged in its own box, protected from the delivery service by another box.I have tested the teleconverter on two Sigma telephoto lenses with satisfactory results. With the 70-300 'long' (non-digital) lens - which is intended to be its regular 'mate' - the autofocus worked at lowish magnifications. Not a lot of use,as the lens could cope with that level of magnification on its own. Manual focus at full magnification was easier than I expected and there was no sense of restriction from loss of light (two stops?) entering the lens.On a fine, clear morning, using a tripod and remote release lead, photographs of small boats and other objects at about 500 metres distance were perfect. A building about 2 miles away provided a good result, though subject to atmospheric haze. The results with the 18-200 lens were equally good on manual focus, but autofocus only worked at the very lowest magnification - not the same proportion of magnification compared to the longer lens.Importantly, auto exposure was perfect on both lenses, with no sign of the two stop loss of light.Used sensibly - and within its capabilities - I expect this teleconverter to meet my needs perfectly in clear light conditions.Just to be on the safe side, I have since added a tripod clamp (labelled as a Canon accessory) around the teleconverter to improve the balance of the ensemble and reduce/avoid the risk of magnified 'shake'. Results as yet untested.

As I say an excellent product which works well with a Sony Alpha 330 plus Tamron 70 - 300mm lens. As expected autofocus only works at lower magnifications but sufficient light available to focus manually through the viewfinder. i could not give it 5 stars because it was not clear in the advertisement that it would not work on short focal length lenses such as the original 18 - 55mm lens supplied with the camera. This isn't a real problem as I was purchasing to use with the Tamron but it would have been nice to know.

Very good quality product which communicated with the camera. Took a little time to get used to it and a tripod is a must for long distance close ups. Good all round results.
