I have owned a national pet rescue for fifteen years and I have always bought WAHL clippers in bulk, for use internally but also for resale. It's been a best-selling item all of that time. We have sold over 3000 of these over the years, all to delighted customers. The only thing I'd change is the wretched crimp-sealed, rigid, plastic packaging on the blue version -- if that still applies -- as it can take three men half a day to hack their way in, ha, possibly losing fingers in the process. Otherwise, the perfect item, for all uses.I have used Wahl pocket clippers (sometimes called Pocket Pro) in many colours, sometimes rubberised, sometimes not, some marked for pets, some for people...and therefore you can please take this review as being for any of the Wahl pocket clipper range.I have always been thoroughly thrilled, though, irrespective of the clipper chosen. The price per unit is crazily low in my view, and we managed to resell these at up to £20 a unit if we included detailed pet shaving instructions alongside. I still can't believe they are available at this price... I'd take the lot!I adore these so much that at one stage I was buying in bulk from Wahl, ha. I still have around 100 'spare' and there's no way I'd ever give them away...they are priceless! I and a lot of people I know, fear the day Wahl cease to manufacture these amazing little things.I can honestly vouch for the quality and durability of the Wahl pocket clippers, irrespective of the application (pet or person) as long as you treat them with respect. And please, unlike some of the naff reviews I've just read, don't blame the clippers if the battery runs out! Good grief. A battery is an item that has nothing to do with the manufacturing of the clippers! The battery is a single 'AA' and does come supplied, and in 9/10 cases the battery lasts a long time, but of course you can get rogue batteries so just have one to hand as a spare, especially if pet-clipping as it will cause distress if you leave long pieces of fur dangling from a part-clipped animal. For pet clipping, I find that you can --if you have a nervous pet-- allow the battery to run right down, until the clipper is running slowly, and it will be extremely quiet in operation then, and the pet will accept it happily. Long-haired cats, known to be nervous, will also acclimatise if you make a frequent effort to sit with the cat and NOT clip or comb, but just run the clipper in quiet relaxation, perhaps while gently stroking the pet but not drawing any special attention to it or the clipper. This way, the pet comes to see that the noise of the clipper isn't to be feared at all, and that they can sit with you when the item is in operation. For matted pets this clipper will remove a whole cat-sized matt if necessary, with a smooth, even finish similar to what is achieved at the veterinary practice. However, do it slowly, always go in the direction of the fur, never against, and NEVER restrain the pet. This will create fear in the pet and what you want is a compliant, happy animal, so instead take the route of quiet relaxation, clipping a tiny bit when the pet is with you, etc, and never restrain or chase after the pet. You can gradually and slowly build up to clipping larger sections. There's no rush; if you hurry, you will undo your work by scaring the animal.Always be slow, always have a quiet, calm room and nobody else around, and no other pets. Just you, the peace and calm, a few treats, and you must pretend that you are relaxed and not doing a thing...the pet will accept being clipped as easily as being stroked, if you take time to gain trust. This way, your pet will come to associate the clipper with its trust in you, rather than its fear of you.Note if you are a stressy, nervous sort of groomer or clipper, or just a highly-strung person who can't relax, the pet will pick up on this as if its ears were radar, so CHILL OUT and just make this into a relaxing, stress-free pastime. It can also help to gently play with the pet (especially if a cat), perhaps distracting him or her by a toy on a string or stick, just while seated on the sofa. Don't get the pet jumping around, just dance the toy around a tiny amount, enough to get the pet interested and engaged. If you "occupy the head end" you can achieve a great deal of clipping surreptitiously. It's amazing what you can get away with, even with nervous pets, once the focus is taken off the clippers. The clip-on comb attachment that comes with the device is not needed for pets, but if you find the clipper stops and you think the battery must still be okay, clean the head of the clipper by rubbing it across a slightly damp and rough cloth, and add a drip of clipper oil, and it will run again. The clipper can stop occasionally if you are not a good clipper yourself and if you have clogged up the head... you will learn to get it right. Also, I have seen people move their clipper around too much in use on a cat. **Let the clipper do the work**; you don't need to push and pull the fur. This should be so easy to use and cut the fur like butter, so there must be no tugging of fur whatsoever. If you're hurting the pet, your technique is wrong. There is also no chance to injure a pet if you don't tug at the fur or restrain the pet; we have never, in 15 years, seen an injury caused by a Wahl clipper.A very important thing to say, too, is NEVER clip a cat's tail bare as this will induce self-harming. Always leave a sizeable tail tuft even if it is matted. And again, a reminder to never clip against the coat direction as the amount of itching caused can cause self-harming too.In all, a phenomenal small clipper with a multiplicity of uses. 5*.

I have a very elderly cat who has never tolerated being brushed. Since he decided to stop grooming himself all together, with the best will in the world I have not been able to keep on top of his fur, and it is in some areas, very matted. Whilst it doesn't appear to cause him any discomfort, they are very unsightly to look at, and I worry that if he ever caught fleas (whilst unlikely), I'd have a nightmare of a time de-fleaing him, with his fur in-penetrable in places. Someone suggested I take him to be trimmed at the vets, but at his grand old age, I need a better reasons than matted fur (that isn't a problem to him) to put him under sedation with all it's associated risks. After a bit of research, and looking a numerous customer reviews, I decided on this pocket trimmer by Wahl. I'm very glad I did!It quite small and fits perfectly in my hand, making it very easy to control. It's just the right size to get in amongst the mattes in my cats coat, allowing me to remove them, with my cat hardly noticing what I'm doing. The blades must be quite sharp as they go through even the thickest mattes with relative ease. The trimmer is very quiet, and my cat doesn't bat an eye lid...that said, at his age I think he's reached a point of 'done and seen it all' - I can run the Dyson close to where he sleeps without him so much as opening an eye or twitching a whisker! My dog on the other hand, is quite noise nervy and she leaves the room as soon as I put it on, even though it's going towards the cat, and is no where near her. Pet owners of noise nervy animals may want to bear this in mind - as quiet as it is, it may still be too noisy.Whilst light, it feels robust. Certainly doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart any time soon, which was a nice surprise given the price. The only downside I've noticed is that it eats batteries for breakfast, but then I appreciate it's doing some pretty heavy duty work for me at the moment, which would explain that.UPDATE 04/12/14 - In spite of little use since my initial review in April 2013, this suddenly stopped working. No reason, no warning. It just refused to operate (even with brand new batteries) after being in the drawer untouched for 4 or 5 months. Very disappointing, because whilst relatively inexpensive, a product should last longer than 18months with little use. Very disappointing for a Wahl product. Have amended my star rating to reflect this from 5* to just 2*.

I bought this product after seeing my vet use it to trim off fur to take a blood sample. She seemed quite happy with it so I decided if it was good enough for her it would be good enough for me.I have a very heavy coated Border Collie who I usually trim on her legs and under carriage - great for the hot summer months, great to stop her getting clogged up with mud during the winter. Her coat is incredibly absorbent and difficult to keep tidy. I'd previously used scissors for this trimming but never felt entirely easy doing so, too easy to make a mistake.I didn't want a heavy duty trimmer, nor one with the constraints of a lead. This has proved to be perfect for the job,it's also excellent at cutting through heavy matts. It's relatively quiet, my dog isn't in the slightest bit bothered by it, but then she's pretty bomb proof at the best of times :) It is important to oil it before and after use (as stated in the instructions), the battery it came with lasted quite a long time. You wont get hours of use out of the battery, and the only reason I've given 4 stars and not 5 is due to the fact that the replacement batteries I've used just don't seem to have the same punch as the original one (which I no longer have and have forgotten what type it was).I've been using this trimmer now for several months, it's comfortable to hold and the switch is easy to operator. Another reviewer said they had to hold the switch down the whole time - I've not found that to be the case but you do have to be firm when switching it on.If you are wanting to trim a dog all over then this is not the tool for you (it clearly states it's purpose on the packaging), but in addition to face trimming, I would recommend it for the use I'm putting it to, ie tidying up under the belly and the rear legs in order to cut down the amount of matts gathered.

I hate those heavy shears that plug in, they are hard to wield & get the job done. So i looked at this with interest, a battery operated trimmer, huh? I didn't hold out much stock on what was said if i am honest, but got it and this is the perfect trimmer, battery or no. I will advise it is small - so large dogs, it really is a no go for - but for that small shearing between the eyes and up their backsides, it is a dream. It ergonomically fits into your hand and despite my dog having a total seizure - because she is spoiled & didn't want to help - i got the trimming done. It trimmed WELL. Right down to where i wanted, the hair out of her eyes and didn't bald her in the place i cut, like the big shears, instead it removed the hair and took it low enough she won't need this done for a month or more. It doesn't make a lot of noise, not to me, i saw someone reviewed it as noisy so i thought i would add my thoughts on it & the battery was still in full working order by the time i had got her in an arm lock that even Hulk Hogan couldn't have got out of ( joking!! Cruelty to animals should be punishable by death to me). Another point to note is, amazon say it comes with no battery and you need to buy oil, this is all complete in a pack with the clippers, with an array of brushes to clean the clippers. I am very pleased with my purchase and won't hesitate to buy another when the time comes for these clippers to go to clipper heaven. I will add, the oil amazon say to buy with it is £2+, the clippers and oil, battery & brushes were just over £7, so you do the math, this is a great item

I own a very long-haired cat which came from a cats protection centre, and his past was not very pleasant so when I got him he hated people picking him up or anything else for that matter. The only thing he still won't let me do and runs a mile from me is when i want to brush him, and because he goes outside, he comes in with half a tree stuck to him. When I bought this trimmer, I was a bit skeptical because of his nature that he wouldn't like it. I was right! It is noisy but my cat would run away from anything so I knew he wouldn't like it. Once I restrained him correctly with a towel and started clipping, he calmed down and just laid down and took it. The clippers work fantastically, even on the really stubborn, matted areas. I would recommend this to anyone if you can't afford vet prices for sedation and clipping (£90 for sedation!!) as this clipper works well if you know your cat and how to restrain them, or not restrain them if they are cool kitties!! :) I would recommend to clip a bit at a time if your cat is really bad as it takes a little while to clip them as the clippers are small but if you give them a treat of meat after every clipping session, he will soon relax and you can do it again in a few days or so. :)

This is a very good little trimmer. It cuts close so l will use it to trim my dogs feet. He is a larger Yorkshire Terrier. His coat is silky and grows quite long. I always cut it quite short when the warm weather arrives. Hairy dogs suffer in the heat. He is an unusual dog with a mass of wavy blonde hair. Just like me. They say dogs look like their owners. I first tried to use the trimmer on his tummy and he started to resemble a "Skin-head". Much to his disgust. He looked at me with a sad expression and his always wagging tail, yes they have tails now.,went down between his legs. So I decided to finish the task using scissors. He looked good when l had finished.I managed to remove up to half a plastic shopping bag with disguarded hair. I recommend theis cutter for trimming between nails or tails etc. They are good value for money. Delivery was prompt as usual. They are quite well made and are easy to handle. They come with two attachments for the teeth. Both cut short. A small oil. Which has to be used beforehand on the teeth. Not yours, the cutters. A small brush for cleaning the fur between the teeth after use. A switch on and off on the underside. Wall is one of my he best trimmers you can buy.

I purchased this for my Maine coon cat, his coat is very thick and as an ex stud boy, he is rather sensitive when brushed in intimate areas! Before he came to us, he had repeated General anaesthetics and lion cuts, I really didn't want the risk or expense of the procedure, so I researched the various brushes and clippers available. I purchased these clippers and I'm very happy with the results. It took three weeks of desensitising him to the sound and vibrations of the machine, it also took practise the best way to trim the hair. The areas which were knotted and even felted were removed quickly and painlessly.I found that resting the clippers ever couple of minutes allows the machine to cool and the cat to relax. It can never ever be a rush job to trim an animal, patience is the key word, if they are not happy, leave it for the day. If it seems the hair isn't cutting, change direction of the clippers.I was really suprised at how effective this little battery clipper is, ensure regular oiling ( it comes with the set) and change batteries as soon as the pitch altars. if you have the patience then this is a fabulous ' must have' item.

I am really asking a lot of this little gadget to get through the fur on my uncooperative hairy monster of a cat - a ride on mower would be more appropriate. However, it is battling its way through the jungle of matted fur despite screams of protest from aforementioned cat. With the aid of protective gloves and three towels we are beginning to see the light! The trimmer is small, easy to hold and keep in a pocket just in case a sudden opportunity to remove a bit more fur presents itself. The trimmer is reasonably quiet but the minute my moggy hears the switch go on she is off at a rate of knots. I think it would be excellent for a medium coated cat or small dog but it is a struggle for the trimmer to cope with a really matted coat.We are getting there but sometimes the trimmer turns itself off |(probably due to exhaustion!). At this price it is worth a go and I have no regrets about buying it. Our cat was a stray and we are still trying to get her to accept grooming which will negate the need to trim her fur. At the moment she looks more like a rabid hedgehog but the little trimmer is still battling its way through - Bless!

Although these are sold as 'pet trimmers' I chose this model over the rubberised 'human' version as they're a slightly less bulkier design which makes them just that little better to use for delicate grooming.Admittedly these trimmers are a little noisy, especially if you're working around your ears, but they have a surprisingly powerful motor and this coupled with the compact design makes them ideal for shaping those tricky sideburns or any other areas that require care and attention. Other grooming devices and brands I've used such as Babyliss and Remington were either under powered, poorly built or badly designed (or all of the above)and I personally think this pocket model by Wahl is the best fine trimmer on the market to date. All things considered however i will only give them 4/5 stars as I feel a few extra combs of varying lengths and a small bag/pouch should be included or at least an optional extra. I'd also like to see a water resistant version available as well but all things considered these are excellent trimmers and a worthwhile purchase.

I have an elderly British Shorthair cat whose coat is dense, more like wool than fur, and despite daily brushing small matted clumps of fur appear quite often around his hips and sides of his tummy. This trimmer really is as good as a man's cordless electric shaver on him (we tried both for comparison) but it doesn't deal rapidly with the mats. I think the thickness of the cat's coat is the real problem. But then our vet has never had any problem with her professional plug-in electric trimmer when we have taken him to her in the past and has got the job done in a couple of minutes. Nevertheless, we will persevere with our Wahl trimmer (perhaps try and improve our own trimming technique?)and are glad we have it as it does save the traumas of having to get the cat to the vet every few weeks/months. And I should add that he doesn't mind us using the trimmer on him, doesn't seem bothered by its buzzing or our efforts with the procedure in general. He is a very laid-back cat. Once again, thank you Amazon for the usual great packaging and quick delivery.

This is a fantastic product and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. Its all ready to use with its attachments and a battery.I have a long haired cat who had various cotts of all shapes and sizes, in many areas. These clippers made light work of removing them without any need to restrain the cat. As its so small, it gets into difficult areas with ease, its comfortable to hold, easy to use and its not as noisy as I thought it would be, the cat was fine with it. As its battery operated, you can use it anywhere you want, no need to be near a plug socket as with mains operated clippers. Fits well in your pocket. I shaved some big cotts, very close to the skin, all of which came away without any damage to the cat's skin and without any stress caused to him.I would definately recommend this product to anyone who has a long haired cat or dog. It is good value for money and has saved me money, if I had to take the cat to the vets and saved the cat from the all the stress that goes with it.

Bought this item to help groom my two Maine Coon cats, neither of which is too happy being brushed but both like the great outdoors and often get slugs caught up in their fur (yuck!). This wee trimmer is great for getting off the matted fur that has gone like felt and would not brush out no matter how hard I tried. One of my cats is easily spooked and I worried that he would run a mile from the trimmer as it is quite noisy, being battery operated but I needn't have worried. Both cats are very tolerant of this trimmer and you can work away on them without even having to hold them down. I think this trimmer is great value for money. I love its size, the fact that it only takes one AA battery to operate it and it comes with oil, guard combs and cleaning brush. A real bargain and so much cheaper and less risky than de-matting under sedation (£90 at the vets!)

This exceeded expectations. What a brilliant little trimmer for my long haired tabby who gets very knotted all over his tummy as he struggles to groom himself. I use the attachment so as not to go too far but I also take it off to get to awkward knots which this little thing gently slices them out. It fits snugly in the palm of your hand, aiding better movement and enabling smaller areas to be cut properly. You can keep it on constant or the switch can be used in line with intermittent cutting, particularly useful if your pet gets anxious about noise or until you and your pet get use to it if, like me, you've not used one before. Highly recommend for long haired cats, small dogs or as an extra trimmer for difficult places for larger pets. Really pleased with this purchase.

I bought this to trim Jack my 12 year old long haired cat, who had very matted fur in patches. Had previously taken him to vets to have this removed, but found this costly and distressing for Jack. Couldn't believe how well this little trimmer worked. It took off all the matted fur very quickly and with great ease.It wasn't as noisy as the mains trimmers and easier to operate having no trailing wires. 10 minutes and the job was done. Jack didn't like it much, but compare that with a day spent at the vets (which he hates) to this quick job (which did need 2 of us, one to hold him and the other to trim)... but his stress levels were much reduced and the job was over in no time.Would thoroughly recommend these clippers

Does the job and clears up hair that needs to be trimmed. The item is quite small so fits well in the hand - but can be a little too small when trying to get into tough spots. It works fine for lighter cuts but I would question whether it could handle larger jobs. The on/off switch seems to not be of the highest quality and I wouldn't exactly say this trimmer was 'quiet'. It's about as loud as the electric shaver I use for my face, which can still instill fear in one of my pets.It does what it says it will do, however. Mostly. I got it on sale so i'm quite satisfied with what I paid for it, but there could be better options at this price point if you take a look around.
