I was expecting this to be just a pink plastic digital talking diary but it's so much more. The diary part is almost insignificant beside the other features. The suggested age level on the box is age 6 to 11 so we thought we might need to give our 5 year old a bit of tuition. We couldn't have been more wrong – she loves it and navigates from diary to playing with a virtual pet (her favourite) quite happily. The screen size is quite small, just under 2½ inches, but it is in colour and the screen size doesn't seem to bother our little girl – she just gets on with it. It seems very well constructed with thick hard plastic so should take a bit of the inevitable rough and tumble. If the loud mid-Atlantic voice gets on your nerves, there is a volume control. The diary arrives boxed and with demo batteries included but you will need 4 AA batteries in due course. The basic settings will set the time, date etc., but the features the kiddies like are the game and voice ones. There is also a USB port on the diary for the transfer of voice recordings to a PC. We haven't done that yet as there is no USB wire included so will need to buy that separately. The many games and activities are fun to use but are also educational by subtly teaching maths and spelling by using word puzzles. This is a device that I don't mind them playing with, it's not just games, even the virtual pet teaches caring, feeding and looking after an animal. I'm not sure an older child (the 9, 10 & ll year olds) will get much out of it as they will already have gone through similar activities and voice recordings on other devices. All in all, this is a great device for young girls, fun as well as being educational, and it won't break the bank. A good idea for birthdays and Christmas.

I love this V.Tech Secret Safe Diary and so does my seven year old niece. It is very pretty to look at and the main colours of pink and white will certainly appeal to most young girls. This secret diary is made from robust plastic and measures 20cm in height x 17.5cm in width x 4.2cm in depth. It requires 4AA batteries to operate (these are supplied). The heart shaped screen measures 2.4" (6.10cm) and is in colour. The front cover opens up to reveal the operating keys and buttons, when closed it protects these from dirt and dust which could caused problems in operation. This diary has a huge amount of playability by way of games and activities. In total there are twenty educational activities including spelling, maths, logic, typing, reading etc. There are other features such as an alarm clock and address book as well as date and time. My nieces favourite activity has to be the included cute virtual pet which she thoroughly enjoys playing with and looking after. This device can also record voice messages and sound effects. The great thing about this secret diary is that it is voice activated, so that your child can set it to open with her voice alone and no-one else can actually get into it without her permission. This actually works ... you can also add a number password for a little bit of extra security. One final point ... There is a USB port on the side of the device which enables you to transfer your voice recordings to a PC, although it doesn't actually come with a USB lead so you will have to provide your own.All in all this is a great activity device that my niece has had a lot of fun using.

This electronic diary is a great idea that expands on the daily diary with many more features. The main diary itself is opened by voice or by a password and reveals a full but small qwerty keyboard that feels the right side for smaller hands. Above the keyboard is a good high quality colour screen, much clearer than we were expecting. The diary portion lets you write daily entries, as you'd expect, but then the menu also offers many more activities, from education ones like spelling and maths tests to a great virtual pet game that's quite impressive given that it's an added extra. The one concern I have is that I'm not sure whether entries and progress would disappear when the batteries run out or if they're backed up on a writable card in the machine. As the batteries haven't died I'm not sure, but this is the only way that paper diaries beat it and I can't see this being picked up by the owner in years to come to read back through their diary.Aside from the one possible flaw, this is a great gift for a younger child to encourage them to write and it's fun, too.

My daughter loves this and she has spent hours using it. Don't forget to get 4 AA batteries when buying it as the batteries supplied for demonstration purposes didn't last long. This has some fairly basic games which are some fun. The learning activities (spelling, maths, logic etc) are probably more geared to the younger child but anything that is fun and helps a child learn is good as far as I am concerned. It has a virtual pet which is perhaps one of my daughters main likes. The keyboard is clear and easy to use. The screen is a good usable size. Records voice and effects which is fun. Keep your secrets in a diary and it is lockable and voice activated. It is in pink in white just the right colours for a girl.A good fun electronic diary which is also educational. It says for 6-11 on the box, I would say for an advanced 4 year old it would be good. I would say suitable for 5-10 but as the child gets older, the child might well grow out off. Well made, well thought out quality device which is both fun and educational.

This is a definite five star product. My older daughter a had a similar toy when she was much younger, and it was rubbish! The voice recognition never worked and resetting was necessary every time she wanted to use it!This, however, is a whole new, and much improved, generation of secret diary. Gone are the days of little locks and teeny tiny keys that we had when I grew up! This is very good looking, pretty, obviously very pink and girly (dare I say that, in this day and age where gender fluid kids are all the rage?!). It works well, it has a lovely little QWERTY keyboard that is easy to navigate for little hands. There are over 20 activities, there is a virtual pet to care for,and obviously a diary to keep. All in all, this is a great little toy, which can grow with the child. I must admit, although it says age range 6-11, my niece who is almost 5 absolutely loves it. She had to be shown one or two things, but has played really happily with it. I think an 11 year old may think it’s a bit childish, though.

My daughter received this for her 7th Birthday and literally squealed with delight when she saw it. Of the many toys and games she received this has been her favourite by far and it hasn't left her side for 2 days! Her 5 year old brother is hooked too and I may have to get one for him too. While my son has no issues with the pink flowery style it's a shame they don't make one aimed more at boys or in a more gender neutral style. I guess the concept of a diary for 6-11 year olds is something that girls relate to a bit more so there maybe isn't the market for it (a tad sterotypical but I'm sure there are many boys out there who would love this type of thing).I haven't been through all the features myself but they've been playing independently and very contentedly without any help and has been an absolute hit. Would highly recommend!

I brought this for a family member who is 6 after they spotted it in the argos book and wanted it for their birthday. It was over 10£ cheaper on here than the RRP.I was not expecting much from this product but I had a little play around with it while it was in the box before hand and I was surprised at how bright and good quality the screen is. Of course 'good quality' for a kids toy, I am not comparing it to expensive adult gadgets like our phones or televisions! There is more to it than just writing in your diary. There are different modes / games. The reciever loves the toy and it is currently used daily before bed. It comes out for only 10 minutes but it is very much enjoyed. She sees it as being very grown up getting to 'write' in her diary before bed.Money well spent.

This is an electronic diary that also has some games on it as well as a virtual pet. The device feels sturdy and I liked the size of the buttons. I think both younger and older children will find it comfortable to use. It is very easy to use. The box says it is for 6-11-year-olds. I think a bright younger child could use it with some supervision. I cannot imagine many 11-year-olds liking it as it does look like a toy. You can adjust the volume of the device and I would advise any parent to do that straight away! The chirpy voice on it is rather loud and very annoying!

Daughter who is 6 loves this so far.Batteries lasting well and she loves the games and fact she can take it anywhere as doesn't require wifi.A variety of games keeps her busy and she lives the secret compartment.Has volume control however volume resets itself everytime switched off. Auto switches off too soon when recording voice. Daughter finds too hard to reduce volume and turn off music so I have to do everytime or put up with it.

Little girls (sorry for being gender deterministic) love diaries. They also love private diaries. This one is a cool looking sufficiently modern contraption that offers a "secure" electronic diary. Screen is a little poor, but keyboard is usable. Ok for the price among some stiff competition. Main problem is that kids will bore of this a few days in as they are used to much more sophisticated machinery. Ok for a birthday party gift.

My daughter has been asking for one of these for a few years but think she’s just the right age now . Simple to follow instructions. Easy to type in diary and a few fun games . She likes to write so not sure if she’ll use it that much to write in or stick to her paper version but think she will have it for a good few years . And the benefit it comes with other games installed so quite a lot of play value .

This was a hit at Christmas with my partner’s daughter. She loves that only her voice is recognised, and that she can store all her secret and ‘work’ on it. We love the factor there are educational games on it too, which is a bonus. The only disappointing factor for us was the screen broken after a couple of weeks however, it was very promptly replaced therefore, no complaints.

This was a present for my granddaughter, who absolutely loves it. We had to return the first one as it did not turn on so i would advise to test it before leaving the shop, so as not to disappoint your child,. Luckily it was not what she asked Santa for so able to consol her. Argos changed it without question and we tested the new one before leaving the shop.

Our daughter loves this. It was our main Christmas gift to her. It seems perfect for a girl of 8 years old. She has found it easy to use and is having lots of fun with it. My only concern is that the front cover doesn't seem robust so I've given 4 stars as I'm not sure it will stand the test of time with a 5 year brother who is keen to get his hands on it.
